  • Angel 35262. "The importance of the piano part in a song is shown, how it paints pictures, tells stories, evokes moods. And some of the problems are discussed -- with point and wit -- such as balance and transposition. Among Lieder used as examples are Schubert's Wohin, Auf dem Wasser zu Singen, Der Lindenbaum, Das Wandern, Wanderers Nachtlied, Tränenregen, Frühlingstraum, Die Allmacht, Im Frühling, Der Einsame and Erlkönig, and Brahms' Vergebliches Ständchen and Der Schmied."

Quite educational and at the same time artistic. His English is also quite intelligible and comfortable, a kind of standard in the fifties. Thanks for the precious upload!

Wonderful lesson for an accompanist. Heard it years ago when I was a student, and he was giving a lecture, in Sydney Town Hall, I think. Made a huge difference to how I accompanied singers.

I love the story that startsAt 45:16. This really shows what an amazing pianist he was. As a pianist I can tell you it’s incredibly difficult to play as softly as he does

What a treat! I was a voice major at college in the 1970s, and we singers used to play this at parties. I have not heard this in decades, but I find I am remembering every word.

I used to hear parts of this recording on WFMT Chicago back in the 1970s and 80s. I particularly remember (and occasionally imitate) the "is too high.... is too low" story. Thanx for posting this!!!
