- Lanterne Rouge presents analysis of stage 9 of the Giro d'Italia 2017, when Nairo Quintana attacked multiple times on the infamous Blockhaus climb and eventually dropped Pinot, Dumoulin and Nibali to take the Maglia Rosa before the first rest day of the Giro d'Italia 2017.

Winner "yes that is my real name" Anacona was a menace when on form.
Patrik is really good but I feel like he could learn a bit from Cosmo in narration 😁
Those 2014 GT analysis videos from him were top top
@@bk34563 I really enjoy the analytical style of LR, but true. He could spice it up with a cheeky joke here or there. But hard to beat the master ( Cosmo ) at this. This style works well for Pat. If it aint broke, dont fix it.
Now we want the crazy double-Stelvio's Stage of Giro 2017
I didn’t even know I wanted that, but YES.
10:04 the force of his WAT's so strong, that's not a tailwind, that's him blowing that baloon up the road ..
Yep, that's what he said
Even mentioned "Bikes were better"
This channel is so good! Watched a random video a month ago and now can’t get enough. I didn’t realise cycling was this tactical and live the insight you give
watch all of his quintana videos. He is very clearly a big fan
“Back in 2017, when bikes were better…”, LOL. I love it!
This level of strategy analysis is so outstanding
2017 was such a great season
Pinot gave Dumoulin an equally hard time when they were trying to catch Froomey during the epic raid an year later.
Hot Take: this was Quintana’s last showing as a GT champ. Quintana attempted to ride aggressively the rest of this race and got punished by a calculated, Rasputin Dumoulin. After this his attacks didn’t have the same conviction (until recently) and always appeared he was missing the confidence in himself.
Agreed. He made a mistake of riding 4 GTs in a row (2016 Tour + Vuelta, 2017 Giro + Tour). Whoever does that, is finished. He's not been the same world beater since.
Yeah, I always feel like Quintana is riding for the paycheck... no fire in him. Which is a shame because with that poker face and his ability he could be a real dark horse!
In fact this attack only gave him 20s or something compared to Dumoulin and Pinot. It was really disappointing and the writing was on the wall (or the road) for Dumoulin's final victory. (Of course it's easier to say in hinsight)
@@clementdenis4212 Dumoulin's final victory? He still became national champion, World Champion (!), won Giro d'Italia, Tour de France stages and BinckBank Tour overall after this!
I wished Nairo would of climbed like this more often instead of sitting up whenever anyone got clear. When he let loose he was gone so few could stay with him
*would have
Nairo never ever never rides with someone on his wheel.
10:02 back in 2017 when bikes were better . . . lanterne got me just as I'm searching eBay for a vintage frameset!!!
Rim brakes? 🤔
I'm 2017 I had I somnia real bad and watched about 40% of this Giro live from New Zealand. It gave me.so.much respect for you when you started out trying to do this from Australia! It still brings back fond memories to see these guys out there. Crazy just how many of those names will be there this year!
This was the first stage I saw that got me into cycling still remember that day holy shit nairo was on fire
Tour de France stage 20 or generally that Tour Nairo was inspiring! Since then cycling has been amazing to watch in general
Mee too! First race I've ever watched and it got me hooked to cycling. Then the double Stelvio stage helped too
This depth and humour of your analysis is easily the best one. Your details ultimately brought me into cycling. Bought my first bike this year and I am absolutely lovin‘ it. Well done, thanks for that! 💪🏻
Those 2017 Movistar kits look awesome
love these throwback recaps
Great Giro, first one I followed. Fucking loved all of it! The side shots of Landa in blue in the beautiful valleys... Great images.
I am loving these giro videos. Keep up the amazing work
I subscribed when you announced the Giro throwback videos. Love these stuff.
Dude it's a gift every time a vid comes up
Dumo! ❤️
Loving these videos so much LR, thank you 😍
Geraint Thomas and crashing are the most iconic duo in UCI history
I like how you guys narrate races, my props to Nairo he’s a hills annihilator no ways those guys were gonna catch him up that hill Nairo is a Forward pushing machine.
im really hyped for the next Video. This Video was great, but I also like the ones where more tactic is involved instead of insane w/kg.
These throwback videos are amazing
Great video!
The finishing TT from 2017 would be a great video!
These videos are awesome :D
Can't wait for the #poopgate analysis vid! :)
His sprinting force was so great he pushed the balloon forward.. this was before he was know NairoInGreen, but still mighty.
great as usual
@10:45 Skip to here what we all wanted to know and then rewatch the entire video. LR is a man of the people. Made my taint quiver just thinking about the possibility of this video. Leave a comment for possible video titles.
How taking a dump mid race can affect your w/kg and assert dominance over the peleton
Shit analysed
I want to see a top 10 climbers of all time from you. I have a feeling that Quintana is going to be up there 😉
Love these
Can you do stage 14 of the 2016 Giro? Epic stage with Anacona getting caught by Kruijswijk and Chaves in the end
Please do one on the ridiculousness Alarcon and the rest of W52-FC Porto, especially now the ADA is coming down hard on them
YES, we're finally getting TomDom poopgate! That analysis video might break the internet.
Off Topics: Biniam Girmay has signed a new long-term deal with Intermarché-Wanty-Gobert through to the end of the 2026 season! Boom! Boom! Boom!
Fabulous climb, but they didn't go the whole way up it that year. And they didn't take the standard way up either (there are three or, anyway, two and a half; they're doing one and a half of them this year, but I don't know if they're going to the top).
Visited it a couple of months later, "Zak" was painted *all over* the roads.
It's probably the most similar Italian climb to Ventoux, in that you're going to the top of a mountain rather than over a pass between mountains. Etna too, I suppose, but that's, well, a volcano.
Finally: the Dumogate video incoming.
I see and remmember this Quintana and wonder IF this prime Nairo had a chance against POG and ROG... very different kind or riders But then Quintana use to have 2 or 3 bullets as he attacks steady but making uncomfortable for others to follow ... on the spot I don't want to shade Pinot But every time I see him, remind how big is him how strong is on the climbs and also... how strange is his riding and pacing and eventually is all over the place maybe wasting watts away... that stange shake in the bike stand and even sometimes seated... wonder why he hasn't been capable to catch the ones ahead in the breakaway? ( sarcasm...) and the prime dumolin, was fkn! strong calm and steady ... good times , great analysis LR!
Quintana 2020 yes or yes he would be with them even he is the only one who has risen stronger than them in 2020 it would be a brutal battle on the pogacar tour, roglic and Quintana level 2020
Nairoman's itt will always bite him against pog and rog
You had me at Nairo smiles…
Remembering Quintana by watching LR videos of el Condor before his imminent retirement 😭
could you do stage 20 of the 2015 giro? astana pulled a movistar and contador survived to win his last grand tour
Why are these motorbikes always screwing up and causing crashes? This is ridiculous...
Fun fact: that was a police moto, keeping the law, order and peace, parked on the side of the road as an obstacle for a peloton riding at 50 km/h. Why? Nobody knows, but apparently noone was at fault.
Please throwback to some Froome Tour attacks/domination!
Please do the analysis of Tour de France 2016 stage 12 - the one with Mont Ventoux chaos and Chris Froome running
Strangely didn't get this video in my subscriptions, just now seeing it in my recommended :(
Same - I think CZcams tried to bury it for some reason
Oh I see what you did here with that dumo-gate preview
funny to see the whole peloton on rim brakes.
rim brakes FTW!
Beautiful seeing the peloton on proper 6.8kg racing bikes, not the 7.5-8kg cyclocross bikes that they ride these days.
"Tom Dumoulin poopgate and analysis of that incident"
It's what we've been waiting 5 years for...
I unironically really want Raúl Alarcón video.
Almeida pre gt season has been so short i can't see him doing a good result at the giro, might as well go out in the second week and go help tadej get his 3th tour de france
0:53 what do you mean no-one wanted to chase him? Dude in his jocks is pretty keen there.
"2017, when bikes were better..." :)
ANALysis of a Poop Gate . . . only Lanterne can do that!
I love Steven K from Jumbo.
Es un Nairo man !
The maglia baloon :D
Nairo a beast on climbing
Can't watch now, Tour de Romandie is on!
For 2022 Blockhaus, if he is on form I see this climb suiting Hugh Carthy for a win. Otherwise I think it has to be someone like Yates or Carapaz, maybe Kelderman but since he always crashes who knows 😂
Yep, Hugh or Yates. I think somone like Eddie Dunbar also would have been a strong contender if he had been brought by INEOS as well, but that is another discussion
well damn I completely forgot Super Man Lopez!!
Yeah, Blockhaus is a monster of a climb, though, it's ~40minutes, so my money would go to Superman Lopez
GIGACHAD "I had to shit"
Icewall Kruiswijk vs Superman Lopes beeing caught from behind by Assman Dumoulain on Blockhaus.
Milano Sanremo 2013 or 2017 pls☺️
Is Quintana back?
Nibali in what!? “Puppy pulls position”? Did I hear it right?
do froomes solo to win the giro next
"Back in 2017 when bikes were better" 😂
Who is the best rider to come from 🇲🇽?
The "PUBBY POURS" position.. I love it. but it fits, hands together, cupping a beer on the bar bent over.
Lol its "puppy paws" my guy..
@@daredv OMG, but my term is a newly born one that will set the net on fire!!
@@cliffcox7643 HAHA tru tru
Giro 2015 stage 16 please
Wait is Quintana's "helper" named Aidez? lol
Something is very off about these climbs, it looks as if they are standing still using mountain bike gearing these days. It’s great because no one is grinding but this looks really weird, no crazy attacks like the old EP0 days.
Was Nibali the one that attacked when Chris Froome had a mechanical?
Is who won every GT, 2 Lombardia and a Milano-Sanremo
no it was fabio aru
It was Fabio Aru in the 2017 Tour de France on the Mont du Chat on stage 9 to Chambery. If I remember correctly they all finished in a sprint together so it didn't matter much.
You are indeed correct. Nibbles attacked Froomey on Croix de Fer in 2015 when he had a mechanical. In 2017 it was Aru´s turn on the Mont du Chat as James said. They clearly could not match the spinning master, so they tried cheap tactics.
"Tibo Pino" 🤣
TiboPino 👌
Do Throwback Thursdays.
TiboPino dabest
@LanterneRouge: would you be willing to put a few more pauses in your commentary? I find following what you say a bit challenging sometimes - it all starts to merge into one long sentence seemingly barely drawing a breath. And i really don't want to miss your insights. Thanks for considering...
Kelderman was the MVP of Dumoulins 2017 Giro win here
Nibali lost his chances this Giro by blowing himself up on Blockhaus and Oropa
Maglia baloon? Shirt baloon? 🤣
Pinot gonna do Pinot every time.
Motorbike definitely played a role there 😂
He did nothing.
"TiboPino"
#FreeAlarcon
“TiboPino”
Anyone care to share why bikes were better back then? Because of rim brakes? Less regulations on components?
Basically peak tech and weight pre total cockpit integration
In fact I understand they were even LIGHTER in weight. That an excellent topic some CZcamsr should take into consideration!
New to cycling but does anyone understand the bikes were better in 2017 comment and can enlighten me?
Nairo smiles lots. Just not, as a rule, when he's on a bike.
TiboPino 😅
Don't know why you keep going on about Quintana. He will never win a big tour/race. He was dropped by Van Aert earlier in the season, remember?
Crazy how light weight and aero their bikes look in this stage. Hardly any spokes to grab the wind and definitely no pizza cutters rubbing and pinging.
MAL will win Blockhaus 2022 Giro!!
Pinot's hideous form and technique :(
Thibout Pinot is horrible at race tactics. He’s really good at crying though.
Endless complaining....why dont you get on your bike and ride with them?
And you? Complaining in comments
