    I took a little detour from the typical Spring Break vacation to go on a camping trip in southern Florida. My husband and I stayed at the Trail Lakes Campground. We packed some of my ultralight thru-hiking gear and set-up camp for the night. The next day, we checked out the reptile exhibit and did a little day hike starting at the southern terminus of the Florida Trail. This is nothing like hiking in New Hampshire and it was a little rough, but it was really fun to experience!

    If you see a Florida panther you are blessed. They are incredibly shy and have survived by avoiding people. But snakes, gators and wild pigs don’t care

    I hope you enjoyed your Florida visit. My wife and I had our Valentine's Day lunch at the exact same place you and your husband ate at in Everglades City.
    As a native Floridian I've learned a battery powered fan in your tent on a hot night can make all the difference. I realize you were limited in gear due to flying, but if you ever return give a fan a shot.
    Enjoy your channel and adventures, thank you.

    My grandparents live on the gulf coast of Texas. While visiting last summer, my son and I got up and walked 5-7 miles every morning at a local nature preserve. We saw lots of gators. Even up on the boardwalk where they couldn’t get easily, I was a nervous wreck. We saw several people out running alone, but I was never brave enough to go alone. My cousins thought it was hilarious I was nervous but I had never seen a gator in the wild. I figured the fear was healthy 😂

    If you want a quick fl hike, just a little north in Palm Beach, there’s the OTL- Ocean to Lake trail. 61miles and people average about 4 day 3 night hikes.
    If looking for a spring or fall trip, look at the Ozark Trail in Mo. easy/moderate hiking. Lot of hills, green tunnels, No extreme elevation, lot of small river crossings.. Can do the whole trail in 10 days, or section hike half in 5 days. There’s a lodge at the half way mark for a zero. Several kayak/camping trips if you want to try that.

    Definitely can relate. I cannot (will not!) camp in temps over 70 (in southeast anyway) unless it's ON the beach with a sea breeze to keep bugs at bay. (So yeah - rarely!) A tip for those who do (car camp) is bring a linen sheet to keep from sticking to everything.

    I just got back from a Florida Everglades backpacking trip. That humidity and heat is miserable, especially when it doesn’t cool at night. So glad to be back in a state with four distinct seasons and I’ll never complain about the cold again. 😂

    I enjoy Florida beaches where there is an ocean or Gulf breeze but I do not enjoy the state’s humidity. Plus their abundance of flying insects annoy me, so I would probably not like camping in Florida, except for the very most northern part. I’m also amazed with all the canals that run through Florida and the subdivisions in the housing I’d be afraid to have a little dog cause I’d be afraid he’d get eaten. ❤😊

    I lived in Florida for 27 years. We camped along rivers & went canoeing & tubing. We also camped at beaches and went snorkeling & sailing, etc. There is fun to be had. BUT! It IS a SWAMP! The heat is unbearable, the bugs are jurassic, and as you said, the humidity is so sticky! The beach sand sticks to your body so much so that I used to keep a jug of tap water in my car to rinse off before driving home. There is NO "wiping off" Florida sand. It just rolls to a new location on the skin. 😅 Anyway, there are better places in Florida to camp and better times of the year. But, be forewarned, winter in Florida is freezing because it's wet-cold. Ice storms galore. You still made the trip enjoyable, though, with your ever-positive attitude. P.S. Gators do appear out of nowhere and I've even seen one on a golf course (driving by). I just shook my head and said, "Only in Florida!" 🤣😂😅 P.S. I now live in LA! Couldn't WAIT to relocate! 🥵😎🎬

    I’m glad you’ll enjoyed your trip down here in Florida. Yeah, we can have hot days here during the winter. Well, you hiked a segment of the Florida Trail. There are 11 national scenic trails, and I’ve hiked on four of them. I set a goal to hike at least a segment or section of each one before I die. I’ve hiked more of the Florida Trail than any of them.

Would suggest adding it to your hiking /camp store ... bugs can really ruin a great trip ... for me ,, Permethrin and a good Deet repellent are a must in the heat of the year especially in humid marshy areas ..

    So funny how northerners are so afraid of alligators! We went on a bike tour last year where we rode our bikes 17 miles on a trail starting from the Shark Valley visitor center near Miccosukee Indian Village. We didn't see any sharks, but we saw 49 alligators in the wild sunning themselves on the trail. They were maybe 10 feet from our bikes. My husband and I grew up in Florida, so we weren't afraid at all. There were alligators all around where we grew up. But the people on the tour from Maryland and Washington State were so terrified that at first they refused to ride. It took some fast-talking from the guide to convince them! One of our group also saw a salt-water crocodile, which was pretty cool.

    • @brianc1651
      @brianc1651 Před 5 měsíci

      Us northerners have no idea what to do around gators. I guess they don't have much interest in people, but we know what they are capable of.
