I don't think Kaleidescape will ever be in my budget unless there is a major price drop.
For the hardcore movie collector that is starting to replace 100s of DVDs and Blurays with UHD 4k I think Kaleidescape is a reasonable option.
For me I will keep collecting 4k discs that are on my must have list.

We can argue about which is better (Blu-Ray or K-scape and by how much) but there is no doubt which is by far the most expensive. I like the Kaleidescape concept but they need some honest competition to bring them back to reality. I look forward to that day.

The rise in prices of streaming services and content being on so many services, has brought back the need for renting discs. Then you can get only the content you want from a combination of services rather than subscribing to several services that you may not have time to watch. It’s less money spent (pay as you go), and you get a greater selection. Of course you do have to go out to a rental location like the old days. Some people like that whole experience though.

I was surprised to notice that a lot of older or more obscure titles are available in HD through Apple TV or other streaming services, but only in SD through the Kaleidescape store. "The Awful Truth" and "Holiday" are two off-hand examples, but it's not uncommon. That won't affect the typical user, but classic film lovers should take note before investing in this system.

You forgot mediaplayers like Dune or Zapitti. They are an alternative for Plex and have a n excellent picture and soundquality. Of course we still have to rip the Blu-Rays and 4k Blu-rays first. It is a good alternative to Kaleidescape and Plex, as Kaleidescape is not available in many countries here in Europe. Moreover, you don't have to be a millionaire for Kaleidescape, it helps a lot if you are very rich, and that for a minimal difference in quality and a little more convenience.

I think a lot of people still misunderstand Kscape. It's very pricey and not for everyone. Personally, I detest having to have space for a disc collection which I have to store, clean, and organize. And then I have to inject the disc every time I want to watch a movie. Not to mention, it's inconvenient to browse a library of more than 100 movies when they're all sitting on a shelf and you have to crane your head sideways to read all of them. And even more inconvenient when you have guests and are trying to decide on what to watch. Much more convenient to have a bunch of thumbnails on a TV screen. And so, I have built an iTunes library over the years. Prob about 600+ movies.
Problem with iTunes is the quality. It's actually quite good for my use and 4k Dolby Vision/Atmos looks and sounds great on OLED and 5.4.4 system but it's objectively not as good as disc or Kscape. Yes, I could save money and buy a NAS and 50TB HDD for about $4k and just use Plex, but then I have to learn how to rip everything, how to setup my server, how to secure my server, and then wait a couple hours every time I buy a new movie to rip it. And UHD discs are not cheap. Prob about on par with Kscape store.
I can get a Kscape player and server for about $10k and not have to deal with all the hassle of a Plex server. Granted, $10k is not going to get you 50TB; more like 6-12TB but I have gig internet, so I'm okay with it. Hopefully, prices on Kscape hardware will have come down by the time I actually invest in a system. Still waiting to build my home theater when I finish my basement. Not keen on Kscape not supporting Dolby Vision but won't really matter for my home theater since I'm going projector.

So no one that I can find has done an actually comparison of the actual media. The file size means very little. The type of compression is the compression variable is it CBR or VBR. We really need two screen grabs from the source to compare between K and 4K Blu-ray. At the moment I would say K has not proof that is is better, I'd like to see proof. I think the reason we don't see this from anyone is because K would go out of business or be heavily hurt by the truth.

One thing you don't mention is "portability". Streaming and discs can be viewed anywhere there is a streaming app or 4k Player. Plex and Kaleidescape are only usable in one location essentially. So if you have 2 homes, a home and an office, a friends house or even just computer with a 4k drive you can view the content outside of your residence. You can access the plex remotely, if you have the hardware and network to do it. And you could physically take the Kaleidesape components with you, but that could be risky over time. One could buy two Keleidescape systems, but I believe you would also have to buy the content for each system (unless they have changed that policy). So that further adds to the cost gap. The 4k content in the K store is the one clear advantage, for movies only, but what about concerts and operas? So it is till hard to justify K vs disc for me at this point with the quality difference over physical being what it is for the money, even though I really want it to be.

@@JilesMcCoy Really? Well that’s great news then. Just last year the sales team at my dealer (which is also a very popular online dealer) told me if I bought a strato-terra system for each of my houses, I would have to purchase the movies for them individually because the studios considered them separate devices, even if owned by the same person. I asked even though it was the same store account and they said yes. That meant a full double of cost of hardware and library for me. I was seriously considering it before but that made it a hard pass. Glad to hear that’s been remedied, but at this point I just take some physical discs with me in a sleeve binder when I go from one house to the other (my vacation house is remote and doesn’t have reliable high speed internet so streaming is out). Maybe I’ll look at K again at some point.

I have actually been going the other way and buying vhs movies from the 80s. Let me explain, when you are viewing something with lower quality video your brain fills in the blanks and you get a much better experience. The problem with 4k that I have is everything is emphasized on sound to where you are missing so much of the dialog that I have to have captions on but then lose a lot of the visual. I recently switched from cabletv to streaming which is only 2 channel audio and I am picking up so much more dialog than I did with Dolby. Now don’t get me wrong I own a 4k tv and 7.2.4 sound system. But I can say if I watch a new release I am just watching 2 hours and then like leaving a movie theatre I don’t rewatch newer movies versus old movies which I have probably watched 100 times.

It wins on cost and convenience by a mile which would make it the most popular option. It has become pretty clear that Kaledescape is not making money on disc sales and the exorbitant hardware pricing does not reflect the actual technology being sold. Those with deep pockets who buy into the system are supporting the companies efforts to encode movies provided to them by the studios. CZcams "influencers" are receiving payments to push a product that has no intention of being mainstream. It's a great system but no technological feat that it needs to be sold at current prices.

“The shocking truth.” Downvote for the hyperbole. There is nothing shocking that an $8k setup is a better setup than a $500 4kbluray vs streaming. I personally like my 4k discs “backed up” on my Zappiti NAS. The only reason I like it better than Kaleidescape is cost. 5k for 36tb Zappiti NAS with another $2k for 3 players(theater room, living room, bedroom). Also, I can buy my 4k discs on a competitive free market. That vs 100 4k bluray storage and a single room player for 8k, plus at the mercy of KS’s cost of movies. To get the storage and multiroom playback capability my zappiti system gives me it would cost over $20k more. For that $20k I have my projector, my processor, my amps, my subs, my 4k bluray player, essentially everything but my 15 speakers. OBVIOUSLY, to each their own, and this hobby isn’t cheap, but $20k is still $20k even though spending that money wouldn’t change my life, that’s still cringeworthy knowing what else one can get for that same $20k.
