Why So Many Countries Use Bidets But the US Does Not

  • Every day, the world flushes 270,000 trees down the toilet. If the US switched to bidets, it could save 15 million trees - so why don't Americans use bidets? If you're not familiar with this alternative to toilet paper in many countries, it's a basin separate from the toilet for washing one's nether regions. What countries use bidets? Many households in Europe, Asia, and South America rely on them.
And why are bidets popular in Europe, but not America? Colonial American hygiene began with chamber pots and outhouses, and the country eventually progressed to toilets. Overall, however, Americans were skittish about hygiene topics associated with bidets.

Can I just clarify one point about this? I'm Italian and I can tell you without any doubt the bidet is NOT a replacement for toilet paper, but rather an addition. You clean your butt like anyone else, then you wash yourself. The bidet pipe is not designed to flush feces at all! Hoping this will shed some light into this topic. Stay clean y'all!

I’m an American and I became familiar with the idea of a bidet from a radio talk show host talking about his. I decided to invest in one and it is the best purchase I ever made! I love it and it’s very affordable. You don’t need some fancy, electric, heated bidet. I got one which is simply an add on to your existing toilet and only cost about $40. I now leave the bathroom feeling much cleaner, have no brown streaks in my underwear anymore, and only need a small amount of toilet paper in order to dry myself so I save tons of money on toilet paper, using a small fraction of what I used to use.

I particularly loved it when I hurt my arm and couldn't do the usual cleaning of the nether regions. We have bought several since then and esp enjoy the hot water bidet. It is very comforting in the cold winter to have that warm water cleaning and not a blast of freezing water. We buy the bidet that installs under the toilet seat and hooks up to the water line. We tried one that was built into a seat, but it really didn't fit our toilet. I recommend a bidet for everyone. I'm American. I lived 3 years in Singapore, and my apartment had a bidet. It took a bit getting used to, but once I did, every time I came back to the US, I felt like a savage, after using the bathroom. I only felt clean again, after I took a shower. When I finally moved back, and I was having just a normal tract home built, I told the builder I wanted a bidet. They told me I would have to lose one of my bathroom sinks to make room. I said ok, and they looked at me like I was stupid. I'm so glad I made that choice. For those who have never used a bidet, imagine that worst case scenario of wiping yourself, and accidentally getting some poo on a finger. Now, just wipe that off with a bit of TP and nothing else. There, all clean, right? Of course it's not clean! Well, that's what you're doing with your rear end at least once a day.

    I LOVE my bidet!
I have crooked hands due to arthritis, and my toilet seat bidet makes it possible for me to get clean.
The one I have cost, I think about $250 maybe four years ago? It has a wand that comes out when you activate it. You can adjust the angle, temperature, and strength of the spray. It has a little reservoir that heats the water, enough for one wash, but it doesn't take long to heat another batch if you need it. This means you can just hook it to the existing plumbing and not redo your whole bathroom to have warm water.
It has a blower and you can adjust how warm you want the air.
The toilet seat can be heated, but I have that turned off.
There is a blue led that lights up the toilet bowl at night so you don't have to turn on the overhead light when you're half asleep. 😎
There is a setting that is sort of close to an enema and it is VERY handy for those of us who aren't really active.
The one I have has a remote control that you can mount on the wall or cabinet. Very handy!
Before my kids gifted me this (washlet type) bidet, I used baby wipes. (I didn't flush them though) Sometimes I had to use so many! Being on a fixed income this was horribly expensive.
Even if I had bought it myself, my bidet has more than paid for itself in toilet paper, wipes, and convenience.

As stated in your video, Toto's washlets were a hard sell, most people giggled when they were shown the washlets, and most of the sales staff were not motivated as well. Most of our customers were people who had visited Japan recently and now could not live without one. Well the distributor decided to give a high end Toto washlet to the sales staff. The idea was to get the sales staff to get more motivated, and I must say it worked! On a personal note it was one of the best things to happen to me working there. What a godsend that washlet was! I used it for the next seven years until it quit working to due hard water buildup. When it died, I knew I could not live without one, and as much as I loved that Toto I could not afford a new one as the one I had retailed for over $1,000. I went on Amazon and purchased a Clean Sense washlet for less than one third of the price with all the same bells and whistles. Front and rear cleansing, oscillating and pulse wash, heated wash and drying, individual presets, self cleaning, and deodorizing. This one only lasted about 4 years, so I opted for a new one about 2 years ago. I absolutely will not go without one, they are that great to have in your bathroom. I highly recommend a handheld wand bidet; no need for extra room, expensive remodeling or those pricey "bidet seats" that can breakdown. It can be had for around $50 (what I paid) and is so practical. It simply attaches to the supply line valve coming from the wall by the toilet, then has a shut off valve at the toilet, and another at the wand (some w/adjustable pressure control). I recommended the one with adjustable pressure, not the trigger (unless you don't mind one standard pressure only). But either way the wand is the way to go. Uses:
    1) Men & women: rear usage after messy bowel movements
    2) Women: front usage after urinating
    3) Men & women: rear usage as enema before colonoscopy, cleaning before planned intercourse, cleanup after intercourse (inserts easily; wand with small head and adjustable pressure only)
    4) Women: front usage douching during menstruation, prep for intercourse, cleanup after intercourse
    5) Men & women: easy toilet bowl cleaner (bonus!)

I suffer a lot because I don't have a bidet. It would be extremely helpful after my major back surgery. I resort to using a handheld shower and special stretches to make sure I can defecate right after I wake up in the morning. I don't think using the shower is as clean as a bidet would be. I sanitize it often, and this is a huge hassle which could be avoided if the U.S. would catch up with countries who have advanced to installing bidets in everyone's bathroom.
I also find it to be very annoying that it is so difficult, if not impossible, to find a company that mass produces homes that will allow you to request simple modifications like installing a bench in the shower or a bidet in the bathroom before the home is built, no matter how much money they want you to pay for the home. They won't even leave the bathroom unbuilt, and force you to have to tear down what they do after you purchase the home from them. I will never buy a home from one of these mass construction companies for this reason, and many others, and I will have to get an architect if I can ever buy my own home, unless I buy a used home and have it renovated.

I "met a bidet" in Europe back in the early 1970's. :D We were a non-professional teenaged "youth chorale" from MI that travelled to Europe and spent a month touring and performing at U.S. Army posts and various *beautiful* cathedrals along the way. There was around 50 of us in the choir and we travelled by bus and frequently shared a single bathroom with other guests on the same floor in the Hostel-type lodgings we stayed in.
Washing our *clothes* and ourselves in the bathtub and sinks available in London was a real problem with all the people on that floor needing the bathroom at one point or another and three days into the trip we arrived in France and discovered these wonderful "things" in the bathroom alongside the toilets. When we got home I told my Mom all about that wonderful *extra sink* we'd never seen before with the small basin that included a little water fountain that helped us rinse out our socks and undies in the absence of washing machines. The look of horror on my Mom's face when I told her how 'easy it was to rinse the soap out of the "stuff" we'd washed" in this small "sink" was truly edifying. :D I can still see her face even after all these years. (grin) thanks for the memory.

The spray had one forward setting and one toward the back (supposedly for the needs of specific genders). Paper usage in the house plummeted and, as spritzing replaced smearing, cleanliness improved. Even though there's something extra to scrub when you clean the john, it isn't much. After you get acclimated, waiting for hot water to come down the line gets less important.

Basic bidet seats that don't heat or anything still work great! And they are only $40-$70! Few landlords would complain about you putting one in(as they are fairly simple to install). If you are worried about how cold the water might be, don't be, since with water lines being in the walls, even in the wintertime, the water that you get from the spray is not uncomfortable to use.

I would not be happy spraying COLD water on my butt! Instead, after using a small amount of toilet paper, I use a wash cloth with warm lather at the sink for a thorough cleaning of anal a genital areas.

@@paperburn My 75 year old asshole certainly would enjoy the comfort of a warm spray as opposed to a cold spray that would pucker my butt possibly causing a hemorrhoidal eruption.

Buy a Japanese or Korean washlet (that replaces the toilet seat) for your wife. It is will be the best gift ever. Really. One doesn't need to renovate anything.

My first time using a bidet was last year when I visited my fiancee's childhood home in Slovenia. We went to the beach house in Croatia and I decided to give it a try. I couldn't stop smiling about how clean I was! I don't use the "wipe first, then bidet to finish..." No indeed! It's a strong rinse first, gentle liquid soap on the fingers, lather up, rinse clean, and pat dry with a designated washcloth! When we got back to the US, I went home, wiped ONCE, and went straight to Walmart to buy a Tushy bidet attachment! The only time I wipe now is if I have to go at work! There's nothing like the clean feeling after going!!

I had a negative perception my entire life without even knowing why, spent 2 months in Asia and it's honestly laughable that I never saw one in the UK. They're amazing 😂

The problem I have if I had a bidet it would have to have the water flow of a fire hose!

I installed an after market bidet in my bathroom and it's improved life immensely! And the Japanese have innovated them so much, I want one of those a lot!

It’s more that Americans think of the shared bidet as germy in itself. Anything that is that near someone else’s dirty bits is not something they want to use to spray on their own. If they had one all their own, that would be different. Then it could be sanitized. It’s gross to use a community cleaning/rinsing system for your nooks and crannies.
It’s the same with hand washing in public. Blowers recirculate dirty air, so, it’s pull and toss the first paper towel (it’s germy), wash hands, turn off with a paper towel, then dry hands with a new one, open door with it, toss in trash before door closes. Use foot if necessary to hold door open.

I bought a bidet attachment for my regular toilet. I love it. Unfortunately, I don’t have an electrical outlet by the toilet, so I had to go with one without the warm water feature. Still it’s so nice to be tidy.

I work for the county and was reassigned to the waste water management department during Covid-19 and we had to regularly clean out wipes from the check valves to keep them working
