Aaaay I'm okay, y'all. Just a... mad about the state of Smash. Thank you all for the kind comments! I am so thankful for everyone, here!
I forgot to mention how unlucky I am about my Switch itself. I LOVE it, but because it's a newer model (OLED) I cannot gain the mods that most of the good competitive players have (so no training mod). This has made labbing so much more difficult and the process for mastering certain things takes much more time. I constantly feel like I can be good but everyone else will always be ahead of me. At this rate it isn't worth going to tournaments right now.
Who knows, maybe things will change, but for now, I'll focus on making videos and not tournament runs.

My biggest problem with competitive smash is just how much extra effort you have to put in to get good at this game. You have to pay a weekly fee at locals in order to get any experience in a competitive environment, if you get eliminated early you can go hours without playing due to all setups being used for bracket, and once spaces start freeing up you don't get the experience you need because people start leaving since they only came for bracket. Practicing by yourself at home sucks because training mode is bad, and smash just doesn't have good netcode and an easily accessible online ranked mode.
I wish more tournaments had an open ladder style of bracket, so that you would be able to keep playing after losing 2 sets because right now the amount of money you have to pay to play just doesn't feel worth it

@@kylejohnson8447 No I'm sorry but the fact that you're saying "You have to put in that effort to get good at anything" tells me that YOU have no clue how hard people actually work to improve in Smash. I even listed some of the many barriers that this game puts up to hinder your growth as a player, if you bothered to read. Smash is literally the only contemporary fighting game that requires you to buy an older version of a console in order to have a functional training mode, that has in-built online input delay that can be MODDED OUT, and a ranked mode that barely passes as one. Smash is a fundamentally flawed competitive game, because it was never its priority, and WHY it's so discouraging to compete in.
Don't talk to me about not knowing "how hard people are working", because I am more than aware and applaud those who persevere despite this game's flaws. Your response to my comment was just so obtuse that I saw no reason to answer with any sincerity.

@kylejohnson8447 My guy, I think you don't understand their point.
I think what they mean is that despite everything that can help us improve in smash, there's always something that is going to stop us from improving correctly ; Smash online is not that good and you can't exactly put in practice everything youve done online in a IRL tournament because of the delay, and it would feel weird.
Tournaments aren't really practical because you play for maybe 10 to 15 minutes total and you might stress out and play really badly because of it, and even with the freeplay at the end, some of us can't have the luxary to stay outside really late to play smash.
Training on your own is also an option but you dont get the satisfaction of playing agsint a real human that can read your everymoves or tell you how to do certain things. You just miss out on so much more useful (in my opinion) info on your character and the way you play when youre in training mode. (i'm talking about un-modded switched, so the DEFAULT training mode in Smash). And let's not talk about the bots 😭, they don't reflect in anyway how a real person play.
I see what you mean my guy, if you dont put in the effort to get good at this game then you will never be, and theres no need to complain since you dont put in the effort. But something you need to understand is that some people jsut can't practice as much as other people, some people jsut have other things going on that can't let them practice OUTSIDE of smash tournaments, and that doesn't mean that they don't want to get good, it jsut means that the current format for smash tournaments isnt exactly good.
Which is why having other formats and othe style of gathering to play this game could be useful.
It's always nice to have a good environnement to train, whatever field you're in, coding, drawing, video games, anything. You always need advice and otehr people around you to make you progress. But when those people leave as soon as theyre out, or when they're being overly braggy (kinda like you are being right now-), when theyre not interested in freeplay or just training with someone whose not as good as them, you don't get that experience and training you keep on talking about. Even if you try to put in some effort in the game and in training, the environemment you're in is not letting you get better, (once again, EVEN if you try your best to get better).
TLDR ; The current smash tournament environnement isn't the best for mediocre player, even if you practice for hours on your own or in smash online, you'll never actually get the experience you can gain against a real person in the same setting.

People need to understand that competitive play isn't JUST about top players and you don't magically become one overnight. Every single top player was a nobody at some point in their lives. Too many players expecting money in return is another big one. Why can't more people play with an up-and-comer out of the goodness of your heart?

As a Samus player, I would guess that your issue is all in matching tempo. I don't think that character matchups matter for Samus very much, but player matchups do. Samus has a really easy time not just controlling tempo but switching it on a dime, and sometimes that switch is the hardest part of the matchup. You gotta try to stay on your toes more than any matchup that isn't built around reaction time. You're permanently on defense against Samus. Just play confidently and pay attention and you'll see pretty significant improvement, I'd wager.
And speaking as a former TO, shuffling seeds is so stupid. I mean, it doesn't only affect the players. I feel for the other TOs in that scenario who must have been freaking out because the schedule got screwed up immediately and misreports were happening for sure. And then the way it affects the players too, who often look at their bracket ahead of time, and that affects their mentality going into the event. Some part of me thinks that locals don't need ranked seeding, but shuffling it as the tournament starts multiple times like you implied is just horrendous.
Ultimate has felt unplayable competitively to me since at least 2021, and the community has alienated me because of their negligence in social issues over the last four or five years as well, so I'm honestly happy whenever I see someone willing to move on. After what happened in 2020, things have only gotten worse. There was a committee of community members providing guidelines on how to handle player bans, but it dissolved within the last year, and it failed to handle most of the bans in an effective and conclusive manner both during and after 2020. To this day, I can't believe there weren't stricter guidelines enforced on having minors at events. In the last few years, I think the number of minors has gone up significantly at these events and that is legit such a hazard to the kids, the TOs, and the game. There are going to be more groomers and deviants, and there are ones from 2020 who are still around too, and what I'd have proposed if I had the voice was that minors should only be allowed to enter online tournaments, but that's a terrible solution too, because Nintendo refused to give this game any half decent online service.
And to that end, Nintendo failed the community in more ways. Their Panda Circuit tie-in fiasco has completely killed the economics of the already shaky community, and the balancing of this game went into the toilet during the pandemic. I frequently picture a world where none of the DLC fighters released and how the top tiers are not only more bearable but so much more exciting to watch and play. If you ask me, the only good addition has been Sora. But even then, I look at that initial set of newcomers with Ultimate and I see tremendous failures across the board. Sora and Ken might be the only newcomers who were given the amount of time required to make them accurately and well-designed.
Anyway, good luck out there, GOAT.

I have to drive an hour for the tournament I like. It’s in Sacramento. It cost me more gas since I started going to that weekly tournament.
    Everything IS about money now.
There are several reasons people charge for games but the most important in my eyes are
    1. People should pay you for your above average skills if said people wanna be as good as you.
    2. Some people wanna play great players for ego reasons, and money matches are more worth while than ego matches.
I used Metafy once and got genuinely good advice from my coach. I got a peek into their personal life and some of their days are taken up by local tournaments. Those days got in the way of the lessons I wanted to take. To make the time with me worthwhile, they HAVE to charge me. We aren’t friends. He isn’t obligated to play me.
It really does suck, your bracket luck and bad mouthing you get. I never got that in tournaments. I haven’t been to enough of them to meet those unsavory people. The best I’d ever done in a real tournament was like 2-2 and I get discouraged sometimes but this community always lifted me up when I was feeing down.

I’m down to play friendlies, but I completely understand your frustration with competing in smash. I never competed but I really did want to so I worked my ass off but it still wasn’t even enough. Also, smash online is absolutely horrendous, and now I only play with friends, that also compete, and just play to have fun. I’ve played Marth, Joker and Corrin, I loved playing all three but with horrible online, and the hitboxes not connecting or working properly, I just called it quits. Every time I get on I play against the same characters (which you know about already) and because I that I got so tilted that I realized I need to step back and put the game down for while because it wasn’t good for my mental health. I really did love this game, I put 110% into but the game is actually broken with the online, physics engine, Z-axis and hit-boxes, and this game rewarding characters that should bad overall, become busted online. I’ll still play smash if anyone wants do friendlies and but I just stopped and moved to SF6 and Tekken 8.

I'd love to play friendlies! I'm also in university, and a lot of people have told me that I should go to tournaments, but besides me being a bit shy/nervous about it doing that kind of thing, I really don't feel like scheduling a portion of my time to walk over to campus and compete in a tournament, and I'd especially rather not spend my money going to big tournaments. I mean, I can't even drive because I have Tourettes. Part of me does kinda want to compete in tournaments and see how well I do, because people have told me I'm really good at the game, but I'm working on my ICT degree. I just don't have time to commit that much to a single game, yet I still want to improve. WiFi is horrible, and I don't even have my switch because it's back at home and I'm in an apartment, so even if I wanted to spend 20 bucks for a year of online, it's still annoying to play on. Yuzu was nice, but still had a bit of lag/latency depending on both people's connection, and I still have it and can play on it, but Nintendo made Yuzu shut down, so it's hard to get new people to play with on Yuzu. And then, there's other games I like playing, such as Guilty Gear Strive, or Rivals of Aether, which literally handle the things that Smash struggles with for you. As a smash coach, this all sounds very relatable and frustrating. It's also quite likely you look back on this, and may not reverse your decision, but your perception on the matter will change. It's all highly negative (expectedly), which I can also relate to. Maybe a break will do you some good.
I hate to say, but much of this sounds like general frustration about factors you feel are out of your control, but they very much are. Some of the bracket BS stuff you mentioned sounds like you don't have control, but your play and MU experiences absolutely are. It might not be what you want to hear, but it's the case for not just you but many players.
Either way, I see you around occasionally and I know who you are and how you play - been following for a while now. I would just recommend that blaming things won't help in the long-run for your smash development. Take a short break and maybe return to playing with people you enjoy over trying to compete to be the best, then once you're enjoying the game more, you'll regain the confidence to choose a path that fits you.
Hope this helps man and all the best to you

I've tried so many different methods and asked for so many tips, yet I still lose to every Samus and PT in bracket. Hell, I've even played different characters. It doesn't work as well as many people want to say it does.
Everything I am going through is just a "easier said than done" type of thing. Is it possible I can get better? Yes. However, I am absolutely burned out. I don't think any amount of grinding will help until I take months off from competitive play and reset.
I do appreciate your comment and I appreciate you for being very kind. I just don't see any reason for me to continue struggling with a game for another few years, just to *maybe* win a small tournament.

the struggle is real but don't run yourself dry. its a video game at the end of the day so remember to play it for fun, hell, play other fighting games just for a little fun at least they have fully functional matchmaking. there's so much more to tournament play than just hyper competitive smash brackets so make sure you don't overwhelm yourself with how sweaty the smash community can be or how poorly a bracket can be run. for every samus you meet in bracket you can always find 10 more matches where you won after you solved a problem mid set and casually improved, and that's 100% more important

I stopped wasting my time going to tournaments and stressing myself out over people’s comments about me or the characters I play. Just do your thing and enjoy the game and your own happiness. I’ve been doing that a lot more with my close group of friends and I enjoy the game way more now.

My local scene has always been really nice when it comes to asking for friendlies. I'm guessing you already have, but do you ask everyone for friendlies, or only the people you beat/get beaten by. I'm not blaming you for it, I just don't know if I'm privledged in that regard.
edit: I like to go to the more small weeklies to gather experience, because that means more ability to play friendlies, big tourney are actually pretty bad at that from what I remember (counter-intuitive, I know). That could also be a reason.

As a fellow Marth main I get the frustration and been there, but there are solutions to improving. It’s kind of a myth that you need to attend pricy stacked tournaments to get better. Especially in your region which is full of talented players, you’re probably much better off finding a small group of friends that are willing to grind friendlies and improve along side you. You can also try traveling to other smaller locals, such as other colleges in your area, to learn more MUs at a slightly lower level. Start small, get better, and from there you will have enough knowledge to do decent enough at a stacked tournament that top players will want to play friendlies with you. The reality is you gotta carry yourself and network with players around the same level as you, and ideally improve together, so that you’ll get the most out of attending stronger tournaments.

Want to be good at this game...bruh you a Marth beast! Definitely feel you with the enjoyment love/hate cycle of Smash Ultimate no doubt.
Competing and being in the Smash community requires thick skin whether it's coming across toxic players or seemingly impossible matchups.
On the flipside, the most rewarding aspect of the game is sticking with it and rising above all the BS and within your main's rankings - you're not the only one who has to go through that journey and play a legion of campy Samus'.
If you don't take things too seriously and can find passion for playing and eventually meet the right players to grow with or keep progressing solo labbing in Training Mode (modded Switch helps), win or lose, you'll always be a winner. You clearly have the talent and knowledge of the character and attitude to push their meta further than anyone else has before.

It's just difficult because that's just how the smash scene in ALOT of people in the community in general don't wanna help each other. I'm from MD/VA so I have "top players" in my local but not top players on a national level just looking down on others as if they are trash it's just a horrible environment for those who want to actually wanna be better at the game.

I main Joker and Corrin. You’ve already mentioned the Corrin hate, but maining a DLC top tier is just as annoying. No matter how good I do, there’s always one comment about how “I’m carried”. NO, I’M NOT! Granted, I don’t really go to tournaments, so I haven’t exactly proven a whole lot. But I haven’t proven I’m bad either.
The Melee fans, though. They’re even worse. No hate to the game, but some of that player base will constantly hate on this game and tell me I’m wasting my time. Ultimate’s one of my favorite games, and I hate being told to play a different game as if their opinion is the only one that matters.
But yeah, the bracket shuffle thing is annoying. Like I said, I don’t really go to tournaments so I haven’t experienced it, but it’s so stupid to shuffle the bracket for no reason.
All things aside, Ultimate is still one of my favorite games. It’s some members of the community I have issues with.

Neither character is even awful in the current meta.
Joker counterplay: run away/play slower/take adv of the iq decrease in a hyperaggressive arsene
Corrin counterplay: do anti-swordie things, mainly whiff-punishing and counterspacing because they're so slow.

No idea what the future of this franchise is, but a shiny roster won’t bring me back they gotta at least have better online (which is doubtful as it isn’t Sakurai who is responsible for this truly) and change their “ranked” system. Today is the day I quit competing in smash. Totally, unrelated the video. But, I thought I would post here anyways. I cannot do well in monthlies despite my efforts.
I spent a solid year going to weeklies almost always 2 hours away on transit in across my region and my pay check for absolutely nothing. I legit can’t even say hi to the top players in my region despite being in the scene for years. I’ve money matched regularly just to play the top players too, and losing $20 for the stupidest of games.
I absolutely hate being cheered against, or popped off on like my opponent won EVO. I hate playing -3 match ups which is 90% of the cast for me, and expecting myself to always win.
I hate that I’m the only representative of my character in my country. Alone to get good at some children’s video game. I heard everything, and every issue towards my character regularly, how I play, and cannot get their comments out my head. I’ve had friends from the scene told me give up my character, who’ve I spent the beginning of ultimate on.
    Maybe they are right.
I hate grinding in an endless cycle on elite smash for GSP against mindless mashers, where 1 loss is equal to 10 wins.
Don’t get me wrong, there are fantastic and friendly people that compete, but I’m done talking about just smash.
I dislike how regulars cannot shower, groom, or style themselves. I hate the drama that goes in the smash community.
Very few people can pursue their dream and I’m not one of them. I’m never touching a game cube controller ever again.
Weird out this is the one place I choose to vent. :/

Why the hell do I need to study sport psychology to get good at a children’s game?
In what world is the only way to search up mechanics to smash is either through binging every top player’s CZcams Videos. Or read the entire smash Wikipedia. Like, a visual cue when hitting an opponent out of their double jump is a blue ring. Smallest fucking thing to pay attention to.
Why is it that every character discord is so damn inconsistent with helping, and founding what I need.
Like, I have to read a 100 page forum to start playing a character, and it doesn’t scratch the surface.
Don’t get be started on the entire rooster of characters being gimmicks, and losing entire games to MU checks.

I predict we will have a new smash game soon, anyways, and Ultimate will die off. I'm 38 and have been playing fighting games since I was 12. Smash Ultimate is one of the least balanced games I have ever played. I still play it about an hour a day, but I wouldn't devote my time to trying to play competitively with this iteration of Smash. If you aren't playing one of the broken top tier characters you will get nowhere in Ultimate. The balance is that out of whack. Steve is worse than Bayo was in Smash 4, people just don't want to admit it. The fact they didn't ban Steve speaks volumes.
Cloud is also broken, I don't know why Sparg0 is the only one that is making him work. Aegis/Sonic/GNW, broken, broken, broken. It's not worth it man. Just play the game for your university, get your degree, get married and have some kiddos.
