    Couple of acknowledgements:
    Lot of Emplemon comparisons (mostly positive some negative). I definitely was very inspired by "Art of the Choke" in making this video (even the title). I might have slipped too much into imitating his speaking cadence, (it felt easier to record my dialogue), but I definitely think I did add my unique style of doing things in this video, same as I've been doing in my past video essays.
    Forgot about Domed football stadiums! specifically Vikings, Lions and sometimes Colts, that shouldn't be as impacted by the weather, definitely a dumb mistake
    Idk how I called a run in baseball a "point" considering I myself get annoyed when people call it that,I think in general I was just standardizing my language across sports using "refs" and "points" for all of them but should have gone back and fixed my script
    Barry bonds batted left, thumbnail makes it look like he's righty (I mirrored image didn't really think about it)
    I bring up Hearthstone a lot cause, that's my biggest area of expertise and I like talking about the stories
    There are a lot of examples people in the comments brought up that I wish I covered but, only so much time and I wasn't sure I wanted this to be an hour.
    Also its US centric cause im from the US, and its a lot easier to look into sporting events here. (Also i just like Baseball a lot)
    Maradona's handball was probably intentional, NBA probably rigged the 2002 champs etc. I prefer to keep it more open ended in this video regardless of what I believe personally
    Never watched a solar sands video, so was surprised to see people saying I copied them.

    It is interesting that cheating is such a problem in Hearthstone because one of the benefits of online card games is that they eliminate so many “opportunities to cheat” by eliminating common TCG cheating methods like marking cards, deck manipulation, misrepresentation of health, false shuffles.

    I fenced for many years and the cheating in that sport is pretty rampant. A lot of male fencers will wear plastic chest protectors that they dont actually need so that their opponent's blade's simply glance off of them instead of registering a hit. Also, there are many rules about yelling/celebrating, mostly having to do with provocative speech. I have seen multiple instances where this happens and the fencer's coaches basically gaslight the refs into not giving out a black card. Also, ever since the sport was adapted to electronics, there have been fencers that will manipulate the circuit in their favour, to the point that there are a million tests on all of the equipment before actually fencing lol.

    • @essentialjazzforaspiringmu1605
      @essentialjazzforaspiringmu1605 Před 23 dny +27

      While thats fair, I think there was way more potential for cheating before electric systems. Having two people on both ends of the strips with the two in the middle is a lot of eyes, but also a lot of failure points. Not to mention that its a total pain in the ass.

    • @getdemani-tized6723
      @getdemani-tized6723 Před 22 dny +17

      And of my god the amount of awful refs…that just don’t see the correct calls or don’t give out cards.. it’s so annoying when we go against a certain school whose coach ALWAYS argues with the judge and once accused my coach of being friendly with the ref when he has never actually met him…

    • @huener
      @huener Před 22 dny

      Chest protectors arent illegal tho... Some male fencers may have a more sensitive chest than you realize, and some coaches may require them for all their fencers. Why be upset about that when a valid touch will still be activated if its properly executed? Ive seen plenty of touches graze off the jacket/vest without a chest protector present. That being said I 100% agree with all other points though. Its whack what people will do and how refs will react so differently to things like a fist pump or a yell. I will say though that the ample pre round tests also ensure that no part of the electronics chain is broken prior to match start which could lead to accidental oversensitivity or undersensitivity, its not always a case of intentional cheating.

      @@essentialjazzforaspiringmu1605i also have been fencing for many years, and i believe that before there were electronic score systems, both fencers would coat their blade in ink so that any hit would be visible on the white jacket that they use. still not fullproof and not as good as electronic, but at least it wasn't purely on what the ref sees

    A thought on how it seems cheaters are punished.
    To me, it seems that many teams and individuals cheat. But when punishments are doled out, unless the offense was egregious, repeated, or violent, it seems only the winner gets punished.
    Example: when the Astros won they weren't the only ones stealing signs, but in order to downplay the prevalence of it only the Astros get punished.
    Another example is deflate saga. While many talking heads officially nodded that deflating balls is bad and definitely not a thing that can happen at different atmospheres, sometimes you'd catch one saying he prefers a ball one way or another and would tweak it. But only Tom gets punished

I do wonder how much of a difference the lack of oxygen vs sheer heat affects participants. Doing some labor in the 35C heat today, I’m definitely far from my potential.

    One of my favorite cheating stories. Junior Johnson was a nascar driver/team owner whos car had 19 infractions on the car during tech inspection. The inspectors took his fuel cell out of his car kind of as a punishment to make him lug his car back to the shop. Junion johnson infront of them got into his car, fired up the engine and said "make this 20" then drove off. He had wrapped the fuel line that leads from the engine to the fuel cell all inside his chassis so he could squeeze extra miles out of the fuel run. Doing this wasn't even in the rulebook yet, it was outlawed next race though

      I don't play hearthstone, forgive me, but I do work in software
      If the tournament is run natively in the application then this would mean rolling back the update for all players, running two instances of the same software in one app would be a total nightmare, especially considering the vulnerabilities it would introduce. This doesn't apply if they were running the tournament outside of the main hearthstone prod server

    Good video, man.
    As a big fan of baseball, it feels like evey few years there's a new cheating scandal, like PEDs, corked bats, excessive rosin use, or the existence of the Houston Astros.
    I feel like there's often an attitude from casual fans and those outside to dismiss such scandals as unimportant in the grand scheme of things and therefore not worth anyone's time.
    Obviously no cheating scandal ever is as important as major world events, but I do earnestly believe it's important, in any endeavour with rules and a social contract, to uphold those values. Otherwise, why have games at all?

    Super cool video, love this format! I look forward to hopefully more videos like this. Got a little suggestion, don't know if you care or will take the advice, but I'd be silly not to try.
    The reason why some people are comparing this to EmpLemon is because, like him, you used a narrative framing device in this video--Dante's Inferno. EmpLemon uses narrative framing devices to tell an interesting story, and will frequently tie his theme into the specific story being told. He doesn't own the format and narrative framing has been around for millennia, so don't feel like you're becoming a clone channel--you're driven to tell an interesting story and have found a parallel to draw in a topic we are more familiar with. This did not at any point cause me to recollect EmpLemon, I don't know why some people are saying that, but maybe it's because they know his channel and know he uses narrative framing to tell interesting stories, and think that anyone that uses narrative framing must be directly inspired by him.
    The suggestion I have is to pull things back to the framework more often. It felt like you speedran Dante's Inferno without giving any of the literary lore associated with it, and the only callback after the introduction being a mention of the 7th circle being very cold. I would have loved for you to give a description of each circle as a callback to the narrative framework of the video, and using the exposition from the framework as more of a springboard for the subject matter. As it is, it didn't really feel like we were examining the subject through the lens of Dante's Inferno--only that both of them contain about 7 or 8 levels, therefore it works. Narrative framing is a rich storytelling device and you should lean into it more! Even if it adds several minutes to the runtime, it pays off in dividends.
    I love a good story and you fascinated me for the entire runtime here, I am looking forward to the come-up.

    Very good video, you could totally be the next EmpLemon! One thing I would suggest is when coming up with examples for things, focus on a few big ones instead of throwing in a lot of small ones, it keeps the pacing better. Also, try to be more diverse in topics, don't use baseball 5 times if you can. Despite this though, everything ended up great! I'll be here for the next vid!

    Dude I’m so glad you mentioned the 2002 NBA Western Conference Finals. As a Nets Fan, this was the most egregious thing I’ve ever watched on television. Cheating in sports so blatantly and as openly, it was like the refs looked into the cameras, looked me dead in the eye and said “yes, we’re cheating. What’re you gonna do about it?” And it was surreal. They beat the kings and then thrashed us. We had friendly calls come our way and had a miracle run into the finals; but it was all a set up to give the Lakers another ring. Whenever Shaq is on TV and talks about how he has 4 rings, I’m always very aware that one of those rings is plastic. He sold the gold to the referees for the ‘02 ring and I’m still mad about it lol
