  • Welcome to our podcast where we delve into the concept of Black Tax. Black Tax is a term used to describe the financial burden placed on black people in order to support their families and communities. This burden can take many forms, from paying for extended family's education to providing financial assistance to siblings and parents. Let us know what you think in the comment section.

I can sum it up by saying, there is a difference between “helping” and being used. Once someone or something has become a burden to you, that no longer is helping. Also, if who you’re helping is not doing anything else to better themselves, that is not helping. That is them living off of you. Unfortunately, I have to sing this song too often with my UG spouse and family. Being “helped” does not continue forever. Period!!! ✊🏾😔 When the music stops, the party is over!

I'm trying to leave something for my child, in addition to coughing his school fees. That way, I am making the conditions for him easier such that, when he grows up, he will have a foundation to build upon. And when I've become elderly, It won't be a burden to him taking care me. Some younger generation despises farming , if they can take it up, they would all be rich to take care of themselves plus extended families without any issues instead of wasting time and money in the cities. Bill Gates owns a majority of Land in North America which is all geared for farming. The most Valuable asset on earth is Land. I know many who are doing the right thing in Africa and you will never hear them complain about a thing. Another note to Africns please dont sell or divide the Ancestral land , engage into mixed farming and split the proceeds with in family members that way the wealth is circulated within for generations to come now you have solved the generational curse of poverty. Always remember to lease external land not sell it.

IJS if a "tradition" is no longer relevant and has actually become a burdensome liability to a healthy society and economy, it is kind of backward to continue practicing. I don't even exchange phone numbers with people in Uganda anymore, young or old. It ALWAYS results in phone call a few weeks later, when I don't even remember who this person is, and them asking/begging for money. It will always amaze and bewilder me how PARENTAL Responsibility becomes less of a responsibility as the number of children increases? .... backwardness is the only word my limited vocabulary can apply to the social condition. I can TOTALLY relate to ODJ about the empathy and pain you feel seeing the young talented brilliant Ugandans that need so much PARENTING. As much as you want to help them, you can't reverse "tradition" especially when it's supported by the people it does the damage to.

Black tax is different because you are expected to give your parents financial support every month until both your parents die. Perhaps their parents are repeating what they grew up with. Either way helping your parents is one thing but having to help everyone else is another. However I do know some Nigerians, Cameroons and Kenyans who consider the man with the highest income in the west to be the head of the family. He is called a King and the whole family has to consult with him regarding their school, career, etc. If he feels it's a good direction for them he then helps them to reach their goal. He's basically like father to everyone. Sometimes he's not the oldest child either. He a say about everyone marries. I actually know one who's brother's wife passed and he sent his brother, the "King" a bill for over $30,000. The King wasn't happy but he said he had to send it because that's what is expected of him. Even though he thought the brother went overboard with the funeral. So it can get burdensome.

Black Tax does not mean this in the African American community. The Black Tax in America means that we have to pay higher prices and go through extra hurdles to get certain deals that everyone else gets “just because.” It is known as attempt to cause Black Americans to receive less than everyone else! We see what you are talking about in today’s discussion is known as a type financial abuse of family members or family culture. You may end up being used by family members who have never done much for you but they expect you to automatically enrich them. Real financial wealth is supposed to come from wise responsible elders who took care of business before you. This gets passed “down” in financially healthy families not “up.” You may help your elderly if you are younger and they are older but they should be passing wealth on to the younger generations, not the other way around!

The Ugandan man in the middle is too quiet. I prefer your other hosts. Where is the British Caribbean guy? Or the Ugandan American man. This guy seems as if he is struggling to add anything to the conversation.

Stop complaining and embrace your culture. I am well educated and happy to help my immediate family and that is the nuclear family. Brothers and sisters and parents deserve help once a while not a monthly stipend. If a brother or sister wants to start a business and you can help then you should.
Other cultures like Latinos, Indians do it everyday. And they are still successful. Now when it gets to extended family like cousins etc that’s up to individual choice and how deep your pockets are.

@@kaykay5605 Have you lost your marbles. Plenty of people around the world help their families. Damn, in some countries if you marry a woman you are obligated to help her family. The world does not have to live by the selfish , me me me, Western standards. If you dont like it dont do it, let the Africans , Indians, Filipinos, Mexicans and a whole lot of others who enjoy supporting their families and relatives do it. Its not coming out of your pocket, so none of your business, move on. And if you dont like just dont marry anyone from that culture.

I'm sorry but other races don't have such a level of entitlement to other people's money.
Also if this is how we choose to live then accept poverty as people. Communism has never generated wealth

Jonnita I understand what ur saying my only issue is why are y'all calling this a "Black Tax"??? This is an African Tax forced upon ur own African Ppl by African Ppl!! Black Folks don't do this in US..This is an African Issue..and it's highly misleading to claim it's Black ANYTHING??? I don't care how much y'all now claiming Blackness..fact is Africans aren't Black Ppl..That's Y'all BS..Not Black Folks..🤔

Black Americans definitely do this. So many stories of people having to look after the household because they were the first to leave the hood. It does happen there too.
