The NJ farm is beautiful... her father took flat farmland and created hills, ponds, and waterfalls to look like his native NC (Duke University, anyone?). The foundation works with the Rutgers co-operative extension on various plant and animal studies. The old gardens / greenhouse are no longer there and the house she lived in is no longer there (she didn't want the main house opened to the public and it had fallen into disrepair) which is sad, but you can do biking and hiking on the grounds and there are many different events held during the year. Everytime we passed a spot near Delaware he said thsts where that Perdue killed that person and got away with it. Even an accident where he killed someone. My grandfather lived in Pennsylvania and had a home in rehobeth beach he would frequently travel to on weekends. She was the most excellent woman I had ever met. She and I hit it off when I was a young 17-year-old girl. Ms. Duke always called my mom and asked if she'd mind if she could see me. My mom loved her so much, and they even spoke about humanitarian aid. Ms. Duke helped my mom, who devoted her life to humanitarian aid worldwide. My grandfather made pearls for her, one of a kind. It was shocking when she asked my mother about a set of pearls she was wearing. That's when we learned of that, as my grandfather was the man who made one-of-a-kind design jewelry introducing pearls to the Japanese and making so many different styles for many. He also was the one if you're wearing an Eternity band made the first in the world. I'm thrilled I have the first he made. Ms. Duke became an essential part of my life, and confident decisions, I'd ask her advice. It breaks my heart what the state of New Jersey has been endlessly doing to her estate, the grounds that she loved so dearly, the fantastic trees she had flown in from Africa and planted so perfectly. I'll often go quietly and sit and remember those beautiful moments of having the pleasure of knowing the real woman behind certain people's beliefs. There are so many things people aren't aware of that she deserves credit for, and the state has some nerve-damaging what could have been a fantastic historical history lesson and more. I miss her dearly. Was she close to her family? I'll never speak regarding that. She lived very down-to-earth often; she'd even randomly leave her house and enjoy the people who came to visit her beautiful greenhouses. I remember the first time I saw her do it and the faces of shock and amazement on people's faces. She wasn't what people assumed she was in any sense or did she care much for having to be privately protected 247. I remember a real woman human being. Money is nice, but there are many things it can't buy; it can't bring joy and happiness. She often said sure thing's like that to me. I am grateful for certain parts of the 80s, and when she suddenly passed away, I was on the road. I also thank her for the advice she gave me on that one. She'd always wear wonderfully dressed, always Ms. Duke looked even in her long flowing dresses she'd wear relaxing, and her lovely sportswear. She brought me my frist amazing Ralph Lauren sweater. I cherish every moment, good or sad, when around her. He drudged her to the point of being ill and he had her leave him everything of course he killed her!

    I listened to a podcast a few months ago that went pretty in depth into this case. I'm pretty convinced she did it on purpose and the local police helped cover the crime up. Probably just kept sitting there stewing in her feeling of abandonment and then snapped. "If I can't have you, nobody will!" Nice to fit some video and images of the place it happened in my mind now!

    New to your channel, just discovered it today. Thanks for doing this. I love seeing the actual locations of all these events. I’ve often thought of doing something like this for some of the major Missing 411 David Paulides cases. It adds so much depth and context to the story when you can see where things went down. Thanks again!

    Great exposition and discussion, Chris! I knew the name “Doris Duke” from posthumous (presumably) contributions to PBS programs (“ … with generous support from the Doris Duke Charitable Trust”), but didn’t know the story behind the name. This gorgeous mansion - at first glance, I thought this might’ve been the “Dark Shadows” house (which is also in that neck of the woods)! You do a wonderful and respectful job of covering these historically-tragic locations; I first ran into you from your discussion of the Camp Scott Murders near Locust Grove, Oklahoma (that one, I *do* know a lot about, since I was at Camp Garland at the time, and am originally from Tulsa). Keep up the great (if somewhat macabre) work!

    Doris Duke's father, James Buchanan "Buck" Duke, was my father's great-uncle. He was also the benefactor of Duke University. However, I think we can all agree that both his and Doris Duke's many philanthropic ventures don't make-up for the harmful legacy that his tobacco profiteering has left to the world. I watched my father struggle with his nicotine addiction until his death in 1999. We never met this side of our family, nor had any desire to. But I find it extremely ironic that Buck Duke didn't think to leave one penny upon his death to my father, his great-nephew, who no doubt contributed greatly to his wealth during his lifetime. Not that my father would have accepted it anyway. As far as we were concerned, it was all ill-gotten gains.
    I'm very much a capitalist, but am convinced that human beings just are not meant to amass THAT much wealth in one family. It does a great deal of harm to one's mental health and well-being. In more cases than not, they live extremely bizarre, unhappy lives. They try to throw money at anything and everything. _Perhaps they're trying to assuage their guilt for having so much while so many have so little..._

      I agree with you, I have been in the presence of wealthy families on a regular basis and have amazed at their distorted grips on reality. They truly are in a different world.

    • @gmaddocks
      @gmaddocks Před 2 lety +1

      It is extremely rare for people to leave their money to relatives outside their immediate family, particularly when the relationship is a generation away from the deceased and the age gap is large, as was the case between your father to his great-uncle, James Duke, who died in 1925. I was told this by my late aunt's attorneys when we were discussing her will, which contained bequests that spanned three generations. They are a large law firm and they stated it was the second such will they had seen in their 75-year history.
