- Joining pieces of wood that aren't quite straight, using bamboo skewers to reinforce and force alignment. This to build the top for a standing desk frame. Ordering the frame without the top is usually about $70 USD less.

There is nothing shameful or dirty about sanding dowels, its natural, healthy, clean, and essential for a healthy table . I sand my dowels when needed and have no problems with it. Mr. Wandel I applaud you for advocating for healthy dowel sanding.
But when you watch other sanding their dowels, some can’t keep it to themselves.
Lol
Damn, Matthias bought not one, but TWO standing desk gizmos. Coming from a guy who builds even the most basic stuff around the house, that's actually high praise.
The bevelled spur gear assembly is impractical to implement in a home shop(unless you have a couple dead anglegrinders lying around), and the habitual use means it being something loud and unwieldy you'd have to constantly adjust and tinker with would make it annoying.
@@Leadvest Yeah but he could do like I would, find a used one somewhere and not really care what brand it is
Matthias, I should confess... I didn't think of anything dirty while you sanded the dowels... But I LOL'd so hard with your comment about it... 😂😂😂😂😂
Anyway, fantastic work as always!
Stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊
Ditto for me! 🤣😂
Your "riposte" to the "tossers' and "whankers" had me in stiches!!
Even a barely pubescent youth, or a fully "adolescent adult" normally sports more than a bamboo skewer!! LMAO!!
Oh, and I thoroughly enjoyed the rest of the video, Lol! I covet your adjustable desk thingy. I'm going to have to save my shekels and acquire one of those myself.
Thanks for sharing! 👍👍
Oh! And where do you get your bamboo skewers? I'm not a BBQ guy...
Just wait till he starts sanding broom handles.
I must live a sheltered and protected life. Never have I ever had a dirty thought about anyone sanding dowels.
Few of us have. Unless we're 8 years old.

Your reuse of street-found furniture is great. I need to build a bike trailer so I can start hauling stuff I find out and about.
I think your daughter would love to have some pink furniture.
lol! Makes joke about dowels, proceeds to cut them up next! Love it haha
Thank you, Matthias, for making the joke for us.
I love watching these videos because you just never know what's coming next. It's always a bit off kilter - and entertaining!
My mom walked in on me sanding my dowel and I've never been the same since.
Who knew you could even glue up like that without that domino guy.
Nice (and that was a super job re-doing that pink dresser).
I love the drill jig. It's fantastic. I have dowel alignment fears and this will help.
Dowelalignaphobia... a terrible affliction. My condolences
Matthias, I've watched your channel for years and when it comes to taking what some would consider "trash" and turning into beautiful, useful furniture, you set the bar.
Drilling a side hole to eject sawdust/chips in a drill guide is a genius move. I'm glad I saw this.
I'd love to see some dowel sanded/un-sanded pull out strength testing.
Matthias genius, knows no bounds. The average mortal youtuber begs for comments to feed the algorithm. Not this astute scholar. I know, that you know, that I know, that you know.
Hat's off, good Sir.
How you make a building video so entertaining is beyond me. Couldn't possibly because of the standing dowels. ^^
Wow, it's impressive to see Matthias invest in not just one, but TWO standing desk gizmos! As someone who enjoys DIY projects and building things, his endorsement carries a lot of weight. It's a testament to the quality and usefulness of those products. I'm curious to see how he incorporates them into his workspace. Keep up the great work, Matthias! 🛠👏🏻💪🏻
I wasn't going to joke about dowels, didn't make that connection, BUT I don't think there's anything wrong with having a 13 year old boy's sense of humor.
What is incredible is that all those pins lined up by just putting a pencil mark across no measurements.
Once again you've overestimated me Mattias I am in fact deficient everywhere
I always love your videos thank you for posting. One recommendation from a person who has done that exact board joining before: try sending the dowels on one side of the dowel to a sharp point. That way they can all easily find the open hole which is close enough in alignment on the adjacent board
Good tip!
Wonderful technique throughout the video. I watch more for your clever tricks and thinking process than what's described in the title. Always feel better learning something new from a craftsman.
Very efficient, but simple. Like so many of your good ideas. Thank you, Matthias!
Matthias being able to show a full restoration in one minutes while people on CZcams have to show it in half an hour for the same result 😂.
Great job
Along the line of repurposing materials, I use the heck outta yard sticks being 1/4” thick. I’ve used the them for: spacers that can be stacked, backing for patching drywall, spacing out tile when setting, and as a wood joint biscuit. They also have a built-in scale so you don’t even have to mark them.
I can’t think of the last time I saw a yard stick in a store. I’ll have to keep my eye out for some.
Brilliant!
this comment section will now be entirely people that didn't think of the dowel joke until he mentioned it, that includes me
The Streisand effect, i never thought about leaving a comment about sanding dowels.... Until now.
Someday I'll come back to this and build one maybe. Bamboo not normal hardwood dowels interesting I don't know much about it. Last time I tried something with dowels one in the middle got bent and I was trying to beat the for drying so I just broke it off with a hammer. He seemed to have a lot more working time than I had with titebond 3 glue.
The only thing better than sanding dowels is being shamed while doing it. I couldn’t help myself 😂
Nice. I love all your homemade tools.
How long before you engineer a homemade hand-powered crank-adjustable standing desk? I feel like it's only a matter of time at this rate. Maybe not as convenient, but it's an excuse to make furniture with gears
This. Unless your desk has a battery backup...
The desktop turned out nice and blended together well. I can never grt dowels to line up as you did. I’ve moved to biscuits. No Festool, I can’t afford it. The kids seemed to have fun with the drawers and the cabinet is nice!
Dominoes don't fix the struggle with aligning the "tenon" material with the mortise, it's just very quick to cut the mortise using the Domino, and the tenons are sold ready to go by the box-full. They're still stressful when doing a glueup necessitating lots of alignment, like a slatted base/wall.
LOL.... I have a standing desk made with boxes as well. Been using it for 5 years now.
I fond I only like to use a standing desk for maybe an hour at a time
@@matthiaswandel The issue I have found with most standing desks is that the monitor is too low if it is on the same plane as the keyboard. With my boxes setup... I have a box on a box so the monitor is at the right level. I did build them so they are (somewhat) easy to remove and set up. I can disassemble and go to sitting in less than a minute.
Also... Thanks for all the great content... Been watching you for many many years! We joined almost the same time...
I used bamboo skewers for the 4 piece apron around my new sink (the old hole was slightly too small). The six-hole jig I made I sliced in half, using the A side to fit one arm and the B side to fit the matching arm.
Oh man i probably should get a standing desk
People who snark at dowel sanding are the same children who get a snicker out of the word Uranus.
1:12 - Savage!
If you get dirty comments for sanding dowels, imagine if you were waxing them 🙂 Nice job with this top!
You need to oil the dowels, obviously
@@RoamingAdhocrat LOL
Always, ALWAYS a star👍
What a coincidence, I recently bought a flexispot maple top 24x48 for a gem cutting setup. If only i waited i would have used your link to support you. I love your content and looking forward to the drawer attachment video.
Are you selling gems
I must be deficient in another way because I didn't think about making any kind of joke until you mentioned it. 🤪
I love to re-purpose furniture! Well done.
I bought a flexispot on sale from amazon a few months ago for my wife. Came with a white MDF top. For ~180 bucks total it's way cheaper than anything I could hope to build myself.
Well at least your dowels aren't curved. 😊
You are the best.
Ingénieux,très joli travail bravo à bientôt salut Jeannot ⚒😉
Nice safety boots
Be it from Mathias or James May, I love hearing about pin boards.
I like it!
Top stuff mr M
cool, I want one
I use skewer dowels enough that I keep several sizes on hand, but in that situation I would have used a spline. I also keep 1/8" plywood (door skin) on hand to use as splines in a standard saw kerf.
genius!
Matthias, I always enjoy your innovative videos. Do you think the powered life you used would be beefy enough to use as an adjustable outfeed table for my table saw and other tools? Thanks.
Do you sell or leave behind a lot of these dressers when you move? 🤔 I must have seen you repurpose and build 20+ dressers over the years. Not complaining just curious 💕👍
I have a flexispot desk. Impressive for the money but a bit wobbly laterally when in standing mode! Could have done with a brace between the legs
Hey how about that. I am about to do this exact thing for a piece of (crappy) plywood I want to be an outdoor table. Looks like making a jig will be easier than trying to set up that self centering doweling jig to be offset.
I think the challenge will be I want to miter the corners, so I’ll need to more carefully align things, but this makes it clear I should measure and cut after dry fitting! Thanks!
Thanks!
Felt compelled to chip in a little for years of sharing.
Interesting, haven't used CZcams "Thanks" feature before and noticed they add HST to the donation. Thought you would receive the entire amount. Now realize they are running the show. Would you mind saying how much of a cut they take for future reference.
HST goes to the government, but CZcams also takes a cut. not sure how much, but for superchats on live streams its about 40%
What I wouldn't do for a few hours hearing Matthias's opinions on dirty jokes!
Adding round bamboo chopsticks as dowels is now one of my go-to joinery techniques, and I get them for free from local restaurants. I know you said you can't find round chopsticks near you, would you want me to send you some for testing?
Very slick idea. However, I'm wondering if there is an advantage of using the bamboo dowels over using biscuits...unless one doesn't have a biscuit joiner to begin with. Thanks!
Used it every time, but with bamboo chopstick(r 5-6mm) cause cheaper and easy to buy.
Nice. Please do a video on your security camera setup. It looks like you are using rpi's with your imgcomp?
Is there a way to drill those holes for the dowels while simultaneously marking the location of the corresponding pegs? Like something that places a precise divot as you press in to drill the hole for the dowel?
Nice
LIKED FOR ALGORITHM
Zuschauen, entspannen, nachdenken. 🎉
I have used toothpicks to align smaller pieces instead of dowels.
I've never been able to figure why my biscuit jointer can't give me that good of a matched edge.
I never did either, Peter. I find dowels to be more accurate for alignment
Matthias, I'm a follower of your channels, for many years my work inspirations in this area are based on work, please release the Portuguese translation on SketchUp works 👍🙏
I have no portugese translation
Was that a Matthias burn? Loved it!
I frequently lean on the edge of my desk, so I'm interested in hearing how your joinery holds up after a couple of years. Does the frame extend under most of the maple's width? - also, I was disappointed to learn your chest of drawers isn't a commercial product: it sure looks slick.
The frame does extend partway under the maple board. And I used lots of dowels. Its not so much the bending strength of the dowels, but the combination of the joint plus the dowels.
Why did you do 2 passes at #2:45 instead of just a single full height cut?
avoiding tearout. Ideally the first pass is backwards, but shallow helps too
Hello Matthias, is there a pattern or logic to the spacing and distribution of the dowels?
Just freehand
For just a moment i thought he bought the new drawers 😂😂😂😂
I bought a couple of packs of "Roasting Sticks" for marshmallows. They are around 2' long and are nice 1/4" dowels. $5 for 12. I don't know what wood they are. Maybe bamboo.
Bamboo is not wood. Bamboo is a grass.
Why don’t you alternate your clamps on top of the project and below the project? I always thought that alternating would help offset any bow the clamp would be applying to it. Thoughts?
Whenever I see you marking dowel locations by hand (without using locating pins), I'm impressed that they line up afterward -- I feel like if I tried that, they'd be too mismatched to go together. Any tips, or just mark slowly and carefully and speed up the video in post? 🙂
be good at eyeballing Centers and marking accurately
If you clamp a drilling jig on the line as demonstrated, it should help avoid bit wandering. Also a Brad point drill bit may help
It would be good if you approved a piece of aluminum to see how well the machine works
I wonder if gluing each dowel, on both sides, makes a measurable difference. I know he's done glue tests, joint tests, and dowel tests. I'll go look to see if he's done glue + dowel.
*I guess gluing dowels does make a difference in pullout strength of corner joints- 3:25 "Bamboo skewers as 5mm dowels. Any good?". I'm not sure if a joint with this much surface area would benefit- IANAWW
I guess it would. Without the dowels, it'd be a butt-joint. And it's a tabletop, so when you put downward pressure on the lip, I assume the glued-dowels do a lot of work resisting that force.
Was there any particular reason for the non-uniform spacing of the dowels?
I've run the glue setting up race too many times to want to do it again.
I noticed when I clicked on the frame AND top link, there was a $20 coupon making the frame without the table top the same price as WITH the tabletop.
I'm starting to think Matthias is planning to create some sport around trying to jump on top tables at different highs and this is just a prottotype
Can you build a height adjustable desk re-using the scissors mechanism of an old German Fliesentisch?
Hi Matthias, have you ever made plans for a sofa? I know I can find some on the internet but I would trust yours to be comfortable.
2:38 what's under tension? The layers of laminate, which run parallel to the joint?
Or, maybe there is a mild gap at the joint (not jointed perfectly), so when you clamp, there is slight tension?
(As I understand, tension is pulling/stretching)
Thanks for the vid as always
one board bowed up, the other down, like I said in the video.
Fancy desk base, but the big question is - does the downwards motion employ regenerative braking?? :-) LOL
Thumbs up, and thanks!
*This is 2023, you can't be body-shaming folks about their 'tiny dowels'.* 😆😆😆
Size don't matter, it's all about how you use them and if you sanded properly
"...my back hurts". Your problem is the chair. Also helps if you start going to the gym and asks the instructor for some specific exercises to strengthen the back.
If you don't mind me asking, what are the towels/blanket on the walls for in your basement office?
Sound dampening for when I record voiceovers
@@matthiaswandel Ah, makes sense. Thanks.
Also for cleaning up after sanding dowels

About back pain... how regularly do you go on a walk? Because let me tell you, I bought a good chair for home office, one which allows for many position changes... I have a standing desk at the corporate office to which I bike twice a week.
The only thing that really helps my back pain is going for regular walks.
I go on a 20 minute walk every day
@@matthiaswandel And you still struggle with back pain? Getting older sure is a bitch, isn't it?
Sanding dowels?
What's wrong with deficiency?
I wouldn't consider myself deficient
Is that a thing comments about sanding dowls I guess it's probably just the action
Weak stomach/abs &/or tight hamstrings = Lower back pain.
Tighten the abs - not the way you think.
Loosen/stretch the hamstrings - not the way you think.
