Chris Paul's Overrated Defense Exposed - 2018 NBA WCF

  • It's about time the voters stop handing All-Defense selections to Chris Paul without him having earned it. The Warriors' Big 4 all took turns lighting him up and Chris Paul was lost on switches, screens, in transition, and pretty much everywhere else on defense. And yet again, was outscored and outplayed by an opposing PG in a head-to-head playoff series.
Chris Paul averaged his least assists (5.8) in any playoff run and least assists in any playoff series (4.6) during the 2018 WCF, proving that the only way for him to be successful on the team level is by having someone like Harden do most of the work for him. He also shot his 2nd-lowest FG% in any series during the 2018 WCF, second only to his horrendous performance against the 2012 Spurs.
Fortunately for Chris Paul, Andre Iguodala was injured during his clutch performances in Games 4 and 5 or else his numbers would have been even less impressive and the Rockets would have been eliminated earlier (According to ESPN, Iguodala held Harden and CP3 to 1/41 FG from Games 1-3, though I feel these numbers may be exaggerated).
James Harden and Clint Capela led all players or tied all leading players on both teams in PPG, RPG, APG, SPG, and BPG for the 1st and 2nd Rounds of the 2018 Playoffs to carry the overrated Chris Paul to his first WCF, since he was clearly never good enough to do this as the leader on his own team.
This is now the 4th time in 6 career playoff series wins that Chris Paul's teammates had to lead all players on both teams in PPG, RPG, and BPG (Blake/Deandre in 2014 and 2015, Harden/Capela in 2018)

One example of why NBA.com player DFG% is not accurate, for all who are citing this to argue Chris Paul played good defense
Through 2 games of the NBA Finals, nba.com claims that LeBron has not scored on Curry
    - stats.nba.com/player/2544/matchups/?Season=2017-18&SeasonType=Playoffs&DateFrom=05%2F31%2F2018&DateTo=06%2F03%2F2018
However one can clearly see that LeBron has scored on Curry at least 3 times through Games 1-2.
    - czcams.com/video/b4fnnKF1Axg/video.html
    - czcams.com/video/b4fnnKF1Axg/video.html
    - czcams.com/video/XvAY7N9vUvE/video.html
so NBA.com's DFG% is not at all accurate and citing it does nothing to hide Chris Paul's poor defense.

      2018 1st Round and 2018 WCSF
Harden and Capela lead all players or tie all leading players on both teams in PPG RPG APG SPG BPG for both the 1st and 2nd Round to carry Chris Paul to the WCF for his first ever 2nd-round series win.
      2018 WCF
Paul's only great performance in the 2018 WCF was Game 4 after Iguodala, the Warriors' best perimeter defender was injured and his next-best 4th quarter was in Game 5.
Prior to Iguodala's injury he had 17.3 - 8.3 - 4.3 on 40/25/75 with 2.0 TOpg and 4.3 fouls per game for Games 1-3, and that is even with him stat-padding in Game 1 and Game 3
Game 1 - 6 points on 3/3 FG in the last 80 seconds down 12+
Game 3 - 8 of 13 points, 1 of 4 assists after being down 20+ late in the 3rd quarter
The 2018 Warriors are the only team he faced that made the NBA Finals or won it all, and he averaged his least assists in any series (4.6) and 2nd-lowest FG% (40.7%) in any series against them.
Showing that he only has such good career playoff stats because
      - 10 of his 16 series are in the 1st Round
      - and because he never played a Finals or Title caliber team prior to the 2018 Warriors.
The only 60-win team he faced was the 2012 Spurs (adjusted for 82 games) and he shot 37% with 4.5 TOpg against them. When Chris Paul does face the highest level of competition, he has mediocre or poor performances.
The Rockets already made the WCF while beating Chris Paul in the process in 2015, and with injured Patrick Beverly missing the entire playoffs. The only way for Chris Paul to have playoff success on the team levels is by joining a team that already had more success without him then Paul did on his own teams.
Kevin Johnson, Jason Kidd, and Steve Nash all joined sub-30 win teams and immediately took them to 2 consecutive Conference Finals (NBA Finals for Kidd) despite KJ and Nash dealing with injuries to themselves or teammates, respectively. No excuse for Chris Paul failing to reach the WCF as the leader while losing to 0 Finals/Title teams prior to riding Harden's coattails.

Capella got destroyed on defense and Harden was as in the clutch. Chris wasn't even healthy this series and still had the second best opponent field goal percentage on the team

    • @nobodytouchesmj9780
      @nobodytouchesmj9780 Před 6 lety +3

NBA.com DFG% is not accurate. By their own definition
"The opponents field goal percentage on shots when the player is defending the shot"
      stats.nba.com/help/glossary/
Does not include plays where they were beaten off-the ball or on cuts - unable to defend the shot - which is many of the plays where Chris Paul was beaten
      such as
      - 0:00
      - 0:15
      - 0:30
      - 0:40
      - 1:40
      - 4:10
      - 4:25
      - 5:00
and does not take fouls into account, as Chris Paul led the team fouls per game and total fouls for the playoffs. And led all Rockets in fouls per game for the 2018 WCF with 4.2 per game. Next closest was Ariza with 3.6.
Chris Paul averaged his least assists of any playoff run (5.8), playoff series (4.6 in the WCF) and his 2nd-lowest FG% in any playoff series in the WCF (40.7%). His only great game was in Game 4 after Iguodala was injured and his next-best 4th quarter was in Game 5.
His numbers were even less impressive from Games 1-3 pre-Iguodala injury and that's even with his stat-padding at the ends of Game 1 (6 points on 3/3 FG in last 80 seconds down 12+) and Game 3 (8 points 1 assists after being blown out by 20+ late in the 3rd quarter)
James Harden and Capela led all players on both teams in PPG RPG APG SPG BPG in both the 1st and 2nd round to carry the overrated Paul to his only WCF appearance, since he could never do it as the leader of his own team despite never losing to an eventual NBA Finalist prior to this season. This is now the 4th time in 6 playoff series wins that Chris Paul's teammates led all players on both teams in PPG RPG BPG (Blake/Deandre in 2014 and 2015 1st Rounds) proving that he isn't at all capable of carrying teams to series wins on his back.

If these are the highlights of CP3's bad defense, u know nothing about basketball, how it meant to be played and u had never played basketball on any good level. U only see the numbers and the fact of scoring personally against CP. And there're many reasons why Paul is a great defender. And I'm not even a rockets fan or his personal.
The fact that u mentioned Capela as a leader of the team by watching some stats means that your conclusions cann't be taken seriously. He is just an average player, very dependent from good guards.
Disappointed a lot, should've been an interesting channel.

    • @JLau910
      @JLau910 Před 6 lety +7

when he mentioned paul getting carried by capela, he lost all credibility. Capela is an up-and-coming center, who is less athletic than deandre jordan, but better with his hands and at least hit SOME of his fts in the regular season.

Why don't you name those "reasons" Paul is a "great" defender instead of making some broad statement just to disagree? You can see in this video several instances of Paul failing to close onto the shooter and even running away from the ball. That speaks to a lack of effort and closing on shooters is one of the basic tenets of good defense. WHenever I see Paul matched up against a quicker guard like Westbrook or a prime D Rose he gets blown by easily. Taller guards can shoot over him. The only thing Paul has going for him are his steals, and when he misses on them, he gets burned.

    • @0ne_her0
      @0ne_her0 Před 3 lety

@@turtleislandlac1490 Why should I name "those reasons" of being CP a good defender when this video is all about his "overrated defence"? I'll just need to repeat - if u dont understand the game of basketball it would be waste of time to explain you why CP's defence even in this video is not bad. 90% of the video is about his teammates bad defence and CP tries not to foul or it was just a bad change and he is doing nice job to stop the opponent twice bigger than him. You may think that his decisions are wrong, but the numbers, experts and even nba players tell us a different story. For me term "overrated" in the title of the video is just completely inadmissible.

The way you blindly hate on certain hof bound, nba players baffles me... like if you can’t see what Chris Paul does on the floor then it’s hard to believe that your knowledge for ball is respectable. We talking about a 6 ft gaurd that is now older in his career, forget the skill because anyone with eyes can clearly see he’s up there with the greats but if we talking about the intangibles, the grit, the passion, that fire in his eyes... I mean if you can’t respect a guy leaving it all out there to chase his most desired wish; to win, then you shouldn’t be watching ball.

That's NTJ for you. I didn't watch the video I already know his garbage blueprint. The time breakdown of the video is something like 10% of legit plays / 20% of good defense they just made the shot / 30% is showing every foul and anything else to make the video as long as possible / 40% of it is BS where he takes reaching to another level. Video complete.

This was CP3's best playoff run, he was the leader, came up clutch when needed and took it up to arguably the best NBA team ever. The Rockets switch on D which leads to surprise surprise, mismatches (6ft vs. 7ft). I was not a CP3 (ego) and Harden (defense) fan before this season, but they have stepped it up!
