🚩 The Fatimid Conquest of Egypt, a pivotal moment in Islamic history. It destroyed any semblance of central authority in the Muslim world, provoked the reaction of the Turks as defenders of orthodox (Sunni) Islam, impelled the Omayyads in Spain to declare their own Caliphate, launched the powerful Murabitun revolution in western Africa, denied the Muslims their last chance to conquer Europe. Moreover the Fatimid schism gave the Crusaders an opportunity to capture Jerusalem in 1099.

The only Shia Caliphate. Egyptian history might be the most fascinating of any one country just because of how many cultural changes they've seen. And it might have beeen the first centralized state in human history because of the Nile's breadbasket. 5000+ years that include rivalries with the Phonecians and Hittites, surviving the Late Bronze Age Collapse, power struggles with Nubia and Assyria, conquest by Persians, Greeks, Romans and Arabs in succession and thats just into the early middle ages. Saladin opposed the Crusaders and the Mamluks opposed the Mongols. Alexandria was maybe the first million strong city. Cairo at one point had the prominence of Baghdad and Constantinople. Alexander, Caesar, Belisarius, and Napoleon have marched troops through those ancient lands.

It was indeed a very important region to control, unfortunately the Egyptians lost their founding culture and language (except the 10 million Coptic Christians but the language is liturgical, like hebrew was until 1947) now Egypt doesn't view itself as Egyptian first but as arab and muslim. Thats why most people don't consider egypt as an ancient nation, because the culture is too different.
Iran, Greece, China, Israel, Armenia all were invaded but kept their original cultures and mostly , their native languages

Old Cairo is a medieval Islamic city but modern Cairo include ancient regions beside it. If u visit Cairo one day u will see babylon fortress a roman one and many medieval mosques and churches. Alexandria is a ptolmaic city and in upper Egypt u can see the ancient version of Egypt especially in Luxor and Aswan. I really like the diversity of cultures and architectures in Egypt.

@@saguntum-iberian-greekkons7014 honestly China similarly has losy a lot of its identity and history under the current regime. Both Egypt and China have survived as states but the idea of being "Chinese" is quite recent. Most people who lived in ancient China would be quite upset at the Han's cultural dominance and now its total spiritual rejection.

@@saguntum-iberian-greekkons7014 "now Egypt doesn't view itself as Egyptian first but as arab and muslim" - That is so wrong, first of all Islam is a religion so there is no conflict between it and nationality or cultural identity, and being "Arab" we don't view ourselves as ethnically arab, but as a part of a bigger nation that shares historical, cultural, and linguistic traits, think of latin america for example. It's a similar case. Another example is Europe but without the linguistic part, being "European" and for example German, or French, is exactly the same as being "Arab" and Egyptian, or Lebanese for example. But first and foremost we are Egyptians, there is a reason that Egypt passed through so many different ideologies, religious sects, and cultures and still maintained its borders and etymology. In addition to all the artifacts, tombs, and temples that you can visit in Egypt today, they weren't just protected by Egyptian people because they look nice, but because we've always viewed it as our identity, and what our great grandfathers left us. I know it is hard to completely realize it, but A LOT of time has passed since the last pharaoh, Ancient Egypt was Ancient even during the time of the Roman Empire.

What I find most interesting about this is the fact no one really bothers to ask how did Egypt become Fatimid. Even when we studied history at school in Egypt we usually skipped right to the part where Cairo was established and Al-Muizz resided there and made it the capital of the Fatimid Caliphate. If I had to guess it's probably because the Ikhshid period was full of turmoil and poor governance, historians during that time probably couldn't efficiently report on the subject or reach sources easily. I also love the fact that almost the entirety of the population was Sunni, and remained Sunni after the absolution of the Fatimid dynasty, but they were like yeah sure, why not! Makes you wonder how day-to-day life was during that time in Egypt, and we didn't even get to the Mamluk period yet!
