🚩 The Fatimid Conquest of Egypt, a pivotal moment in Islamic history. It destroyed any semblance of central authority in the Muslim world, provoked the reaction of the Turks as defenders of orthodox (Sunni) Islam, impelled the Omayyads in Spain to declare their own Caliphate, launched the powerful Murabitun revolution in western Africa, denied the Muslims their last chance to conquer Europe. Moreover the Fatimid schism gave the Crusaders an opportunity to capture Jerusalem in 1099.

Fatimids were an absolute calamity. They even had their own honorius in the form of Al mustansir.

History of Egypt is always interesting
i always feel that medieval Egypt is very underrated. it's always either Ancient Egypt or Muhammad Ali's dynasty and modern Egypt. rarely does anyone speak of medieval times (outside the crusades context(
@@shakalalalalkh1098 Yeah, the politics were like Game of Thrones if not more violent. A political thriller set in this time period would be great!

@AlHasan Sameh with respect to the mongols, not exactly. The Mamluk army was largely composed of Turkic slaves. Also, Beibars, the main guy in charge of the defense of Egypt and Syria, was Turkic and once a slave of mongols.

I watched the video about the battle of Ain Jalut on this channel years ago. I was only starting to learn about history then. After a very long time, I watched it's video about Carthage today. Tonight this video popped up in my recommendations and I really enjoyed watching it. Time to binge the rest of the videos on the channel.

Covering Fatimid is a pleasant suprise. Good video hope to learn more about Fatimid rule over Egypt in the future
Egypt, the crossroad of Empires and civilizations.
The only Shia Caliphate. Egyptian history might be the most fascinating of any one country just because of how many cultural changes they've seen. And it might have beeen the first centralized state in human history because of the Nile's breadbasket. 5000+ years that include rivalries with the Phonecians and Hittites, surviving the Late Bronze Age Collapse, power struggles with Nubia and Assyria, conquest by Persians, Greeks, Romans and Arabs in succession and thats just into the early middle ages. Saladin opposed the Crusaders and the Mamluks opposed the Mongols. Alexandria was maybe the first million strong city. Cairo at one point had the prominence of Baghdad and Constantinople. Alexander, Caesar, Belisarius, and Napoleon have marched troops through those ancient lands.
It was indeed a very important region to control, unfortunately the Egyptians lost their founding culture and language (except the 10 million Coptic Christians but the language is liturgical, like hebrew was until 1947) now Egypt doesn't view itself as Egyptian first but as arab and muslim. Thats why most people don't consider egypt as an ancient nation, because the culture is too different.
Iran, Greece, China, Israel, Armenia all were invaded but kept their original cultures and mostly , their native languages
Old Cairo is a medieval Islamic city but modern Cairo include ancient regions beside it. If u visit Cairo one day u will see babylon fortress a roman one and many medieval mosques and churches. Alexandria is a ptolmaic city and in upper Egypt u can see the ancient version of Egypt especially in Luxor and Aswan. I really like the diversity of cultures and architectures in Egypt.
@@saguntum-iberian-greekkons7014 Israel didn’t keep it’s native language. In fact, modern Hebrew is an artificial creation. Jews also don’t have a unified culture, and they definitely don’t practice Ancient Hebraic culture
@@saguntum-iberian-greekkons7014 honestly China similarly has losy a lot of its identity and history under the current regime. Both Egypt and China have survived as states but the idea of being "Chinese" is quite recent. Most people who lived in ancient China would be quite upset at the Han's cultural dominance and now its total spiritual rejection.
@@saguntum-iberian-greekkons7014 "now Egypt doesn't view itself as Egyptian first but as arab and muslim" - That is so wrong, first of all Islam is a religion so there is no conflict between it and nationality or cultural identity, and being "Arab" we don't view ourselves as ethnically arab, but as a part of a bigger nation that shares historical, cultural, and linguistic traits, think of latin america for example. It's a similar case. Another example is Europe but without the linguistic part, being "European" and for example German, or French, is exactly the same as being "Arab" and Egyptian, or Lebanese for example. But first and foremost we are Egyptians, there is a reason that Egypt passed through so many different ideologies, religious sects, and cultures and still maintained its borders and etymology. In addition to all the artifacts, tombs, and temples that you can visit in Egypt today, they weren't just protected by Egyptian people because they look nice, but because we've always viewed it as our identity, and what our great grandfathers left us. I know it is hard to completely realize it, but A LOT of time has passed since the last pharaoh, Ancient Egypt was Ancient even during the time of the Roman Empire.

Hello just to clarify something, the fatimid they come from Algeria and specifically from the kutama berbere tribe who lived in the center of Algeria, bejaia setife jijel millia
شحال عندك من كونت ….
yeay, and they're actually not descended from Fatimah, but Ubaidillah, so muslim reference called them Ubaidillahid instead of Fatimid
Fatimid Caliphate is Tunisian. Its first capital was "Mehdia", which is a Tunisian town. Then, its second capital became "Mensouriya", which is another town in Tunisia. The Fatimid caliphate moved to Egypt, making Cairo its capital.
Fatimides tried so hard to invade MOROCCO, but Moroccans didn't accept their rule.
Algerians PLZ stop lying to ppl here. Fatimide are Tunisians! They have nothing to do with Algeria! The Algerian towns you mentioned were just a part of the Tunisian Fatimid Caliphate. Voila! :D
@@moromohammed4223 yeah Tunisia belonged to the Fatimids not the other way around. And Morocco was invaded by Fatimids too
here we go north african nationalists will start fighting over who the fatimid are from to claim any pride in their mediocre history.

I like all your videos, but graphically I have a couple problems with this one. The saturation and opacity of the territorial colors are to low. I assume you want the topography to be more prominent, but a better middle ground is needed, imo. The other is a lesser issue, the transitional crumpling sound effect is a bit louder than necessary.
That was rather obscure.

Jawhar the Sicilian is pronounced exactly as its written. Not Yahar. His name means Jewel by the way.
Jawhar could also mean tactical i think. Because Jawhari weapon is word used for Nuclear weapon in Urdu language that has evolved from Arabic.
Jawhar means skill for sure much as I know urdu. When fighter pilots show manoeuvres during air show it's also called Jawhar.
@@blackpanthar906 That's interesting to hear but the timelines don't match at all as Urdu came a few hundred years after Jawhar's time
Actually jawhar means essence
Jawhara means jewel
@@ntluck1592 I don't think that matters because language comes from root language and Arabic is root language for urdu as urdu was used by Arabs in order to communicate with their Indian subjects. It contains many words from 9th or 10th century Arabic when Islamic empire was at it's peak.
Jawahar literally means a skill.

honestly at this point Egypt is almost like adrianople with the amount of warfare it's gone through. Awesome content Many Thanks !
What I find most interesting about this is the fact no one really bothers to ask how did Egypt become Fatimid. Even when we studied history at school in Egypt we usually skipped right to the part where Cairo was established and Al-Muizz resided there and made it the capital of the Fatimid Caliphate. If I had to guess it's probably because the Ikhshid period was full of turmoil and poor governance, historians during that time probably couldn't efficiently report on the subject or reach sources easily. I also love the fact that almost the entirety of the population was Sunni, and remained Sunni after the absolution of the Fatimid dynasty, but they were like yeah sure, why not! Makes you wonder how day-to-day life was during that time in Egypt, and we didn't even get to the Mamluk period yet!
Weren't some fatimid crazy and a bit greedy, a read about one that imposed the jizhia on the sunnies and didn't allow them to travel in the nile.
It is not possible to explain the history of Egypt in detail during the study period. If you focus, you will find many things like this, so you will find us watching channels like these.
I think that the reason is a sectarian reason (unfortunately some peoples have not yet got rid of the religious heritage of the Middle Ages)
They weren't like "sure,why not ?"
They were heavily persecuted but they kept their faith.
@@azizbey4334 Isma'ili culture never adopted mass conversion, even today we don't proselytize. Fatimid Vizirs included a practicing Jew and a Catholic and Oriental Christian generals, so one didn't need to be Isma'ili to gain power or status. We're pretty chill about religion.
0:14 With all due respect to the studio, and I appreciate your trouble
But the video has a slight error
The Fatimids were founded in eastern Algeria, specifically in Ikjan in Setif, and they were pledged allegiance by the Kutama tribe.
There are many ancient Arab historians who agree with my words, such as Ibn Khaldun, Ibn al-Adhari al-Marrakchi and others.
And also ifriqia does not mean only Tunisia, but also eastern Algeria and northern Libya
I hope you will continue to subscribe to the channel

I Really wanted to know more about Fatmid Navy !!,They fought a lot of battles against the Bizantines
The name Cairo or قاهرة actually has some pretty interesting story behind it. some claim it was called القاهرة (the name means the conquerer) for how little it was conquered, which seems pretty dumb tbh. the interesting story -which i read in بدائع الزهور في وقائع الدهور- is that "Jawhar men were planning out the city and laying down the foundations and everyone was waiting his command to start construction. some team of workers started without the permission of Jawhar. the sorcerers went to them and cried " No No "Al-Qaher (an Arabic name for Mars) is rising, Al- Qaher is rising" but it was too late and Jawhar gave the command afterwards and the name stuck ever since " . Al-Qaher became Al-Qahera became Cairo
qaher means dirty, not mars
