  • The RED KOMODO and Z CAM E2-S6G are both 6K cameras with super 35 sensors. They are also global shutter, which is a rather unique technology that eliminates the jello look most cameras have. This multi-part comparison will dig into the details of these very capable cameras and show side-by-side footage.
    Watch parts 2 & 3 here: • RED KOMODO vs Z CAM E2...

    IMO the only real advantage of the ZCam (so far) is the affordability of accessories. Otherwise the Komodo has the S6G beat, equaled, or leveled on subtle differences that boil down to a matter of taste. Seems to me the that ZCam is counting on customer loyalty for the long-term proposal of value of eventually matching/beating the Red ecosystem through similar or better quality of codecs, software, support, that or reducing the price will become extremely important.
    Otherwise, great shots Mark, great video.

    the comparison at 1:09-- they're so similar except the obvious blowing out of the z cam. would love to know more about the specifics of this shot w grading v recording codec, or camera settings, what's causing the stark difference?

    • @FlannelNinjaTech
      @FlannelNinjaTech  Před 3 lety

      I don’t think either cam was able to capture the sunset without some clipping. It’s just too bright relative to the foreground. The difference between them is likely due to how the post processing affects the highlight rolloff. I’ll have to experiment with it. I may also share some footage so others can play around with it.

      @@FlannelNinjaTech just circling back (coupling with my other comment,) using solely z cam, I did a test with a bright led in frame, as well as a deep shadow on the other half-- recorded pro res raw, and then z raw-- in post brought both images up and down in exposure testing the range-- the pro res raw suffers from a weird digital roll off and banding in the highlight, and the detail is definitely distorted and blow out looking-- where as the z raw beautifully holds image quality, full detail, not artifacting. I feel like the look on the 1:09 footage, if shot z raw would look comparative to the Komodo. crazy how much discrepancy there is and such little information about the proper way to get an image exposure. wish I could show you a screenshot. gonna try to duplicate my test and put a video together properly for it. anyway looking forward to your videos coming!

The only time the camera is mentioned officially is in the «updates» page, with software 0.98 (or something like that) being the latest.

      @@TheHeartofuae I think you're wrong, already a few units on Middion Impossible which they paid for it over Komodo, also a few VFX houses that returned their Komodo to buy S6g, I own the S6g and know its straights and weaknesses, don't let RED name fool you, the komodo is a great camera and will produce great images but so is the Z CAM S6g. For anamorphic work the z cam is far superior, and for any VFX work it is preferred. There is big upsides to z cam in the feild also like the 7-8 second start up while komodo is around 28-30 seconds the. Black shading. Z cam ofcourse has their fair share of issues as red does but I wouldn't say red is a better choice in all situations.

For the price of $6k to the average video shooter there is nothing that comes close to the FX6, but if you need true global shutter and best anamorphic option than S6g is your only option, if you want a good small all in one then C70 is best choice and if you want the best codec with great colors and a nice brand name then Komodo is your option. And this is exactly what clients and the public at large believes. You don’t have to spend time convincing clients that shooting on Red is a good move. But you will face a massive uphill battle trying to convince them to have their project shot on a ZCam instead of Red... or Canon... or Sony. All have far more credibility than ZCam. And all make professional bodies at the $6k price point. I think ZCam overestimates their street creds.

  • @angryrabbitproductions1690

    Given that these two cameras are the same price. I’m perplexed as to why anyone would opt for the ZCam? Most people have not heard of ZCam. Whereas, Red is well known and solidly established as a premium cinema brand. Often times clients will pay a premium if they know that a Red camera is being used. ZCam on the other hand will do nothing but sow seeds of doubt in their minds. For half the price ZCam might be something that one could take a chance on... but for the same money? I think anyone that chooses an equivalent ZCam over a Red, and pays pretty much the same money, is making a poor business decision.

      The S6G also has some frame rates and resolutions that set it apart from the KOMODO. It makes sense for someone to buy the E2-S6G if they have already invested in a Z CAM product. Accessories for the flagship cameras are interchangeable. There are different mount options available. Also, Z CAM is known to release valuable firmware updates, such as the recent one that added ProRes support for all resolutions and frame rates.

      Also to add to S6g, it has a 3:2 sensor at 6k which will be far superior for anamorphic shooters which will give a much larger field of view in that case. But if used with standard aspherical lenses than Komodo has a larger field of view.
