Confusion is a clear consequence of a bias about the artist, maybe they had previously met Bowie for Under pressure and other few songs and then had relegated him into the fence of pop-rock/rock... I always enjoy this kind of reaction because is like a kick to musical boundaries.
Also industrial when he created the band Tin Machine and went on tour opening for NIN.
Bowie was constantly evolving. His appearance, his personal style, his music were always changing, growing, shedding the past and keeping three steps ahead of the future. He created the template the Madonna and others adopted and followed. This song was co-written with John Lennon, who also sang backing vocals. Bowie was the ultimate collaborator. He worked with many musicians throughout his career who influenced his sound. There is no wrong place to start, although I think it makes more sense to approach his catalog by period. This album was from his "Plastic Soul" period, which followed the Glam era and preceded the Berlin era. Other songs from this era you should check out include "Young Americans", "Right", and "Sweet Thing/Candidate/Sweet Thing". Or step back into the glam era and try "Time", "Lady Stardust", or "Five Years." I wouldn't jump into his final album, however, until you have experienced more of his earlier work.

I couldn't listen to it for about a week, and for a full year afterward I broke down every time I played it. It's not maudlin. It is a man confronting his mortality. It's an audacious final statement, and a beautiful farewell gift to his fans.
@@markgatica12 Your reaction is a lot like I've heard so I choose to put it off. How long I don't know. David Live was my first album. Sweet Thing is on that album...I love that song. That album got me through some hard times. Music always been my escape and for the situation I was in it felt like he was there. Changes was a big one for me at the time. I can still get teary at times depending on my mood. He was my first concert.. The Station to Station tour its on CZcams.

He has no normal sound as such. He strode through the seventies and eighties totally immune to current trends. He was rock , pop , funk , punk , disco , new wave and avant garde. An icon of fashion , a master of songwriting , he was a true giant of music and a very clever and humorous man to interview.
Bowie does funk, pop, rock, psychedelic. Basically whatever he wants. That's why he's awesome. He writes so well. Plays guitar mostly. He's a genius.

Also played sax and piano. But he always put together incredible bands, and moved through genres like a fish through water. He is at home in any genre.

John Lennon played guitar and added the higher vocals on this song. Apparently, they were pals in New York City back in the day. Bowie's voice is an amazing instrument. He had so many different tones and styles of singing.

Bowie is... well, Bowie. Hard to put into any genre, a lot of his stuff sounds radically different.
For something a little bit different, try Bowie's "Space Oddity."
They way I put it is: Bowie took those boxes you try to put him in, made sweet love to them all night long, then left them pining for him the next morning.
There is no normal Bowie sound, he is one of the most innovative artists from the last 50 years

Bowie was a true chameleon. He and Todd Rundgren are my 2 favorite solo artists because you never knew what to expect. But you knew it would be great!

@@taramills2289 Every time Todd tours he comes to the greater Cleveland, OH area. So I've been able to see at least one show of each tour for the past 20 years. I'm going to both shows this November. His catalogue is so eclectic that no matter what mood you're in, there is a song to enjoy. Good to hear from another fan. Stay safe.

As a huge Bowie fan, it's so funny listening to them speculate about what he actually does. They had no idea how MUCH the man did! I love watching the raw reactions to music I love. As they listen to more Bowie, they really start to get it. She is really astute. I like both of them but I ADORE her! I watch this and I wish I could play them all the Bowie songs I love!

Bowie died of cancer. One of the most creative artists of his generation. The white Duke. Ziggy stardust. The list goes on. He had different coloured eyes which made him very unique and his dress sense was amazing...
actually his eyes weren't different colors. he injured one in a fight with his friend over a girl when he was young causing the pupil to be permanently dilated.

Bowie was a mortal god--he was one of the most iconic performers who has ever lived. He created his own genre, which was ever-changing. Pure brilliance, from his Ziggy Stardust days till the very end.
He wasn't a prophet or a stone age man, but he was a mortal with the potential of a superman.
Lex. YES. DB played the guitar, piano, sax, drums, etc. on a lot of his recordings. He was a Renaissance man and we missed him terribly!
He also painted, did silk screens. Did it all!

bowie is very much an avant garde artist. he has something for everyone. he was always trying as much as he could, new instruments, styles, genres, technologies, etc. over 25 albums rangnig from 1967 to 2016. the guy was just incredible.

This is the artist that, in my opinion, changed the most throughout his career. His music is extremely diverse in styles. Along with that, he had super smash hits and he also had some total flops. He always took chances and reinvented himself many times over.

When you were watching Johnny Cash - Hurt, I couldn't help thinking of David Bowie and his last few songs, David also knew he was dying 😭 Bowie loved music, he took inspiration from so many styles. He enjoys a specific sound for a 'period' then when it got stale he reinvented himself, over and over again, decade after decade. There probably isn't a great first song to pick as your first one, because he is so varied you might hate the next one or love it. I'll say this though, his songs are always strong lyrically and musically.

First Bowie track I ever heard; imagine my shock two years later when I learned that the artist behind it was an emaciated London-born Caucasian
The Bowie rabbit hole is a lifetime thing, and this track and the album that spawned it represent a stylistic departure for him...although he did serve up hints on the preceding album (and tour; there was some overlap), and he didn't shed it altogether on the next one --but as a complete work, the Young Americans album stands alone among the Bowie canon; it's brilliant, and even the outtakes reissued years later deserved to make the final cut
Bowie is a legend, his catalogue is soooo extense. He made all kinds of music. I believe Lex would enjoy the song "I'm Afraid of Americans" a lot.
Plus it was collab with Trent Reznor so it's like NiN sound plus Bowie lyrics.
For me, David Bowie is someone that grows on you. As others have said, his style is all over the place but he is pretty good at whatever he does.

@@DanSolo871 I never realized how much Bowie meant to me until the day he died (just a few days after releasing his final album from a hidden battle with cancer). It really hot me hard and magnified all the emotions on the Black Star album. The videos from that album are heartbreaking.
Ok so John Lennon of The Beatles co-wrote this with Bowie and is also singing on it. There is no 'Normal' Bowie sound or even genre. He was very much a Chameleon both with his music and his image, constantly reinventing himself. Bowie could play quite a few instruments including piano, guitar and saxophone at least. Bowie was also a good actor and was in quite a few films. He was always interesting and impossible to pigeonhole.
David Bowie is an enigma, one of a kind and can’t be categorized. An inspiration to so many artists that came after him including Kurt Cobain and Layne Staley….☮️💜✝️

Bowie was a chameleon. Every album, every tour, every year virtually, he changed his style, musically, fashion, everything. You are virtually guaranteed to like a lot, dislike some and have a favorite period if you check out his entire career.
Fame was written to describe his weird life at the time. He was getting rid of his management team which had stolen so much money from him - thus the lines about everything you want is in the limo but what you need you have to borrow because management made him borrow against future earnings all the time.
Bowie has done so much, he refused to be branded a specific genre, he was absolutely brilliant and took chances musically very few artist did or do.

Bowie is his own thing and he has morphed into different facets of himself throughout a very long career. Bowie was a musically genius madman. For many Bowie fans, there are great highs in his career and low points where you can't really get it. But that's true artistry. He took chances and was always respected, even when off into worlds that are hard to follow.
Bowie was incredibly creative, and this song is just one of many examples that prove it.
He plays piano, rhythm guitar and sax and every album is like another experiment in character. He was so talented and got bored so fast he was constantly changing and testing boundaries.
David Bowie is one of the true musical geniuses of modern rock/pop music. There are a lot of great musicians but few that are near the same kind of artistic level like he was (maybe the likes of Peter Gabriel, Kate Bush, Frank Zappa, Ray Davies, Prince, Steven Wilson, Joni Mitchell, Stevie Wonder, John Lennon, etc.)
Bowie was an ever-changing artist with all kinds of tunes, this is a big hit of his. If you want to hear him at his glam rock zenith, check him out with the Spiders from Mars. Mick Ronson is the amazing lead guitarist and David's foil and helped make him a superstar. Try Moonage Daydream, Suffragate City, Ziggy Star Dust and Width of a Circle. This stuff rocks harder than anything else he did and they were the peak of the glam rock era. Enjoy! 🎸

I would love to see you watch the Saturday Nigh Live version of "the Man Who Sold the World" but copyright issues might block you from watching it. So an album version with the lyrics would be cool.

How can you not know about David Bowie?
He is widely recognised as one of the most influential musicians of the 20th Century. Bowie was voted by other music stars as the "most influential artist of all time" in a poll by NME. Rolling Stone magazine named him the "Greatest Rock Star Ever" after his death in 2016.

There is no "his normal sound" when it comes to David Bowie, he changed and evolved his persona and his sound throughout the decades. Genre (and gender) fluidity personified. His most famous song is perhaps "Space Oddity" (1969). I recommend watching the video to this.

Dude.. Just stop... Yes, some of his personas were very flamboyant (and could be considered more on the feminine side), but it had absolutely nothing to do with gender (or rather gender fluidity) whatsoever.
Stop trying to force som modern ideology/agenda on to Bowie, he explained multiple times throughout his career why he did that, there's countless of interviews with him on youtube.
He did it because he was actually extremely shy and very nervous when he had to perform, he felt like when he dressed up in these over the top fictional personas, he felt like he wasn't himself and all of his nerves dissapeared.
Bowie's music career started in the mid-60s and he's covered a lot of musical genres. Hippy stuff, glam rock, funk, early electronic music, arty rock music, pop and most things in between. He played a number of instruments and generally wrote his own songs. If you want to listen to more Bowie, I'd suggest "Space oddity", "Ziggy stardust", "Young Americans", "fashion", "Ashes to ashes" and "Lets dance". All of them have very different vibes and demonstrate his versatility.

Anyone who wants to see more David Bowie should watch the duet he did with Bing Crosby for a Christmas special, they sing Little Drummer Boy, it’s fantastic
Bowie was not just a singer, he was a phenomena, the man could sing in a variety of different genres, was a lowkey genius in crafting his image as well as selling it and he was a decent actor in particular.
David Bowie is the only other artist next to Queen that has such a wide range of genres in his back catalog:
from hard rock & early heavy metal to alternative rock, grunge & proto grunge to punk to glam rock to music hall to new wave & new age to industrial to jazz to prog to funk, soul & disco to edm, house, jungle, drum & bass to triphop & hiphop - the man did everything!
About the song itself: lines like -> "Fame - what you need you have to borrow! Fame - what you get is no tommorrow!" are biographical.
Bowie is one of those artists (just like Queen btw) who learnt the hard way to not trust the managers and business people in the music industry when he started his career as a young & naive man. He did that at first and got exploited so while he was already famous with several hits he had no money at all, he was broke, because all went to his manager.
Bowie was one of the most versatile artists. You can pick 10 Bowie songs at random and none of them will sound like the other. He also painted, acted, played instruments. he was also a visionary who understood the cultural implications of technology like the internet very early on.

Like alot of people said here, Bowie was a chameleon. A rockstar, hit maker, fashionista, trendsetter, actor, painter, icon; a true artist. This was from his mid 70s period when he adopted a blue eyed soul and r+b style (the thin white duke) and had a slew of radio hits. His career is really amazing, and he's quite the personality

Bowie had a lot of range and eras where he changed himself and output. From the Ziggy / glam era 'Moonage daydream' is something you would like. This is the 'Thin white duke' era, Heroes would be a good one to react to from Berlin era. For pop era either 'Lets dance' or 'Fashion' (the longer studio version).

Hard to pick favorite singles, but "Space Oddity", "Ziggy Stardust", "Rebel Rebel", "Golden Years", "Young Americans", "Ashes to Ashes", "Cat People", "Let's Dance", and "Blue Jean" might give you an idea of how he morphed from the late 60s to the mid 80s.
Bowie was a singer/ songwriter along with playing multiple instruments, five at least. However he truly enjoyed collaboration with skilled musicians. This one was co-written with John Lennon! In a documentary about Bowie, this was when he was in LA. He wanted funk but with a twist! Why do something which has already been done? The musicians were blown away by it and the exacting sound he desired. He was indeed getting a bit burned out and followed this era by moving to Germany and creating experimental music with Brian Eno. An early song, Space Oddity, will show you how much he changes! If you've never heard Bowie understand he constantly evolved. He incorporated genres of Folk, Pop, Glam, Heavy Metal, Funk, Soul, Techno, Jazz, Industrial and probably genres I have left out. He was a great singer, but played Piano, Guitar and Sax on his albums. He's a legend for a reason. He was one of the greatest song writer's ever and always had great bands backing him. I have to say you guys are amazing Brad and Lex. This video popped up on my recommendations and I watched it and next thing I know I spent 2 hours watching your videos. I am a 55 year old white guy from Edmonton Alberta Canada and became an instant fan. I love the mix of stuff you do. You have such great chemistry you two and such sincere reactions and comments.
