The hardness of the air bag is absolutely an OG protection feature. There's a spec pamphlet somewhere that shows there was a clear plate attached to both sides of the outsole that protected the new bigger bubble. I remember being surprised that I couldn't squeeze the bubble back then.
Yes, absolutely right. I've had these shoes back in '91 and can confirm it came like this back in the day.
Yeah, but the previous re-release (that released 7-8? years ago) has a soft bubble.

The younger consumers don't understand how legendary these were back in 91. The exposed air bubble on the sole was almost futuristic at the time.......classic but very hard to keep clean, especially the suede part.👍🏿
They were out of this world. So were the commercials. I mean, when you get David Cronenberg and Ind. Light and Magic to do some of them ... But when he says they are like 100% true to the original: The midsole in the forefoot is different.

As an “OG” who was around and remembers these from 91’, YES the Air Unit is supposed to be exactly like that(No Pause needed😂)

I had these as a kid. Never thought they would get a reissue. Pretty sure got them on clearance, and that air unit did not feel like air, hard af
I owned a pair of 1992 OG Olympic Air Force 180s back in the day and remember after 2 years of wearing them I took them apart and the clear part of the 180 rear air unit was part of the outsole and the air bag unit was separate inside it. They were super durable back then and biggest fear was not puncturing the rear air unit but the front air bag unit if you accidently stepped on a sharp rock or object.
Desperately wanted these in the early 90s and there was no way my parents would cop back then. Badass release!
…also the Air Force 180 Pump…I know those will never come back…but a man can dream…😢

I had these for my school shoes in 9th grade. They are the most comfortable shoe I have EVER owned to this day. My mom has a photo of me wearing these back in the day
My uncle gave me his pair back in the day. Cherished them so much. Not an air max guy but this model really gets me.

Man, I remember these releasing back in the days. The colors and the air block was something so new, as a kid it really made you jump for joy.

@3:30 also David Robinson's AirForce 180 Pumps (1991). the ones with the dial for pumping up the tongue or the collar. I hope I still have mine in storage. I worked all summer for them and they where my first Nike. But last time i checked the mid sole was gone and the dial was missing. Still one of my most memorable things from Highschool. I need to check my storage... :(
*The bubble walls was more sturdy that the normal. but you could still push on it. * the Basketball build of it .

I don't normally buy the same shoes twice, but these might change that. I love these so much. Only shoes with holes and unstck bits I still wear.

Best balanced review of the 180 retro, not comparing it to todays models, but actually comparing it to the OG,look, comfort, materials. Unfortunately I am old enough to have had the OGs and I confirm the outer air unit was hard and used an outer transparent mould that gave the air unit extra protection. The 180 was designed and moulded around the whole air unit. Can't wait for these ⏰🥵🥵🥵

Hey Chris, I had them back in 1991 and I can confirm the bubble was already hard at the time. from what I heard it was made to give client insurrance that the bubble would not be cut or pierced or broken by anything on the ground

I had the black color way. That air unit was sturdy back then too.
really, really liked these shoes back in the day. so when they were going to reintroduce them, I was lucky enough to grab them at a sample sale (may have been 2003, maybe '04).., held on to them for a minute.., then let them go. I knew I wasn't going to wear them so I sold them, hoping someone would grab them, and would wear them.., now they are back again.. good stuff

Another great review! The hard plastic does exist on the OGs, but it's probably not as hard as the 2024 version.

I had the original . The air bubble was just like this ! I really like this shoe and being that I had it when I was 19 yrs old I need them at 51 😂! Love the content keep it coming!!

I ran in these the summer before 8th grade. That bubble was hard as a rock but they were so fresh so I just dealt with the pain.

I have the OG from 1991 brandnew in box and can‘t wait to make a huge comparison post (on IG obvious 😅) but this will be cool. Only thing which sucks on most current pairs like the 90, 95 and this 180 aswell is, that the midsole is get thicker and thicker and not so streamlined as it should be and done over decades 😢. But very happy when these drop next week 🎉 Good Review btw!
