    As a Zulu person, I'd like to point out that Zulu people did not have surnames back then, surnames were imposed on us by Europeans. Shaka would have gone by Shaka kaSenzangakhona. The naming system was used to trace back one's lineage. It would be the person's name (e.g. Shaka) son/daughter of (ka) and the name of the person's father (e.g. Senzangakhona)

    • @nicolewright6562
      @nicolewright6562 Před 3 lety +25

      In a clan it was unnecessary to use last names because they all had the same last name so they use the 'daughter of' or the 'son of' within the clan. More to that the fathers name or daughter being used would not be recognisable to many unless there was a scandal or heroic deed that makes them popular and known. There were last names/ surnames to my knowledge.

      Surnames were imposed in order to divide us.Black people used their clan names and that made us a strong nation hence a white men came with a surname bs.

      Ngiyaphika Gumede. Surname is a family name. We did have clan names and family names. My clan name is Gumede. My family or house name (the house / muzi I belong to) is Sibiya ngeNkomo based in Babanango.
      It is the same thing as European, Arab or Chinese system. Osama bin Laden means Osama of the house of Laden. Tariq al-Adin means Tariq of the family called Adin.
      Mina Mthoko kaMzikawupheli wakwaSibiya ngeNkomo.

    • @kwanele.gumede
      @kwanele.gumede Před 3 lety +13

      @@ohlangeni Sibiya is a house name/subset under uGumede and everyone with that name can follow their lineage back to uLuzumana. So it was not a surname in the European sense but something similar to what the Jews used to do (and some still do) where someone like Wissam Ben Yedder's name literally means "Wissam son of Yedder." One's name serves as identification, "so and so" son of "John soap" from the house of "place example here"

    mad appreciation for speaking on Changamire. Im a muShona myself. Pronouncing his name can be hella tough, so if anyone wants to learn, keep reading.
    Changamire (cha- like the fist part of "china": cha-i-na, nga-you are nailing this part already, mi- like "me", re- like "renegage": re)
    together its cha-nga-mi-re
    dombo is waaay harder coz most languages dont have the "do" sound the shona use. dont sweat it though, its possible with practice. Your instinct is to press the roof of your mouth hard with your tongue and make a "dho" sound, but instead you should relax your tongue, flatten it against the roof of your mouth and, still super relaxed, exhale softly whilst trying to make a sound akin to the "dha" you are used to. it should produce something that sounds a lot like a "ma" sound but with no lip involvement. if this is confusing, dont sweat it, we generally dont mind the "dombo" thing coz like I said, most peoples legit cant say it right.
    if youve figured it out, congrats, now you can say Changamire dombo like a muShona.

    The Lozwi was the military movement he created and led. It is now called the Rozvi.

    Why must we choose between Changamire Dombo and Tshaka zulu? Can we not appreciate them both? Tshaka Zulu was unique because he had the dream of building a mighty empire and wanted to be Emperor of all black people. The reason for his determination is because he wanted to compete on a global scale with the European empires.

    In defence of King Shaka Zulu being called brutal came from his upbringing where his mother was umabuyemendweni meaning a woman from a failed marriage even worse as a queen. He suffered the worst having to constantly defence himself from being attacked all the time. In such cases mothers leave their children behind to protect the from a brutal life ahead because of that, but King Shaka would always choose his mother over his father. He grew up fighting all the time that he became who he was. Even in the movie his father Senzangakhona says Shaka leaving with his mother he will face life that is worse than death. With his mothers in a movie we were shown their daily life in Elangeni and how hard it was for them.
    Greatness at times comes from the painful past. He was the best warrior and formed one of the greatest African army in history. Salute

      She did that because she was an evil mother. No excusing that. Women hate their children, especially male children when the father is out of the picture. Just look at America today.

    I dont think its correct to say which ruler was greater than which. All of these rulers played their role according to their time and circumstances. We need to analyse and examine their accomplishments without devaluing or putting one against the other.
