Most slaves in Africa were enslaved by their enemies typically of different ethnicity from what were essentially different nations in Africa before they had any concept of nationhood in Africa.. In Africa slavery worked far differently than it did in the Americas. Slavery was rarely a lifelong situation for the enslaved and their children and descendants did not become slaves at birth simply because their parents were enslaved. Europeans for a few centuries could not safely enter the interior of West Africa to attempt to capture African slaves because it was unsurvivable for them. Local West Africans had developed some immunity to diseases like Malaria and Yellow Fever which Europeans did not. It wasn't until the 19th Century when Quinine was widely available as an anti-malarial agent capable of working against the most deadly form of Malaria, Plasmodium Falciparum, that it was really possible for Europeans to enter the interior of West Africa and by that time the importation of slaves from Africa had been banned in the Americas.
