    Hey JB I'm new to your channel but I like how you do things I'm a retired machinist and I too care for and protect my snowblower. My snowblower is a MTD it's 26 years old and looks and runs like day one. I replaced all the cheap nylon bushings which it came with when it was new to 304 stainless steel ones which I made myself. I think I'm going to put these on my snowblower too, every year I change the oil, every 2 years I totally grease the transmission gears and shafts and always use fresh fuel. I've never had any problems with my MTD I modified mine by changing all the plastic moving parts to stainless steel. I will keep checking out your videos and thanks for doing what you do I truly appreciate it.

    I worked for a major NY based Stock Exchange for 20+ years (can you guess which one?). They were absolutely meticulous about maintaining all of their equipment - reliability had to be to the 5 nines. 99.999% uptime. So, the thinking was that "cost avoidance" although extremely difficult to measure, in the long run was a hell of a lot cheaper than repairs and the cost of down time. Your videos are an excellent example of this thinking. It also reminds me of the children's rhyme "A stitch in time saves nine"! Some people give me a look like "why bother, just replace when it breaks". But I find it easier to sleep at night knowing I've done all I can to keep things from breaking down - usually when you need them most. Plus, I'd rather spend my $$$ on something that gives me pleasure when I want it. Not on an expensive repair or replacing with a new item (which often is not as good as a decent, well made older model.)
    I think that's why my 18 year old Camry has never failed me and has required only the usual wear items.
    Thanks for your videos.

    I just took delivery of an Ariens 30 inch Platinum SHO. I put a good layer of anti sieze and low temp grease on the gears , drive axels and drive slide bar . I will be using silicone before the first use which might be next Tuesday . WD 40 is a great idea for the entire machine coating . You show great detail in this video . Thanks . I am think Auto tire shine for outside of tires . Too bad those outside cable brackets are not stainless steel . One more thing I do is a light coating of bulb lube on the electric start plugs and also in the cord itself . Easy to connect the cord and pug it in both the machin and wall outlet .

    WD40 was designed by NASA in the 1950s' to rust proof re-entry vehicles (parachute into salt water). "WD" stands for Water Displacement. Years ago I did the following experiment: I hammered a couple of steel nails into a piece of wood and sprayed one with WD40 and left them on my deck exposed to the elements, the without WD40 was rusted the next day. The one with WD40 on it stayed rust free for six months.

      @@GarageGearwhat’s top dollar for something like that.
      I sort of have a thing for snowblowers to the point that I’ve been taking them apart, replacing a bunch of things, sanding and painting it all and putting them back together. I usually get them free or around $100. I put a little money in and spend a decent amount of time which I find therapeutic, but now I’m at the point where I’ve got to sell at least a couple. Just don’t know how much is too much for people.
      I mean I’m not just hitting it with touch up paint and WD40.
      These look and run nearly new when I’m done.

    • @GarageGear
      @GarageGear  Před 3 lety +1

      Good question David! Depends on how bad it is! I’ve sanded and painted two blowers before and honestly found it to be kind of a pain. The one blower got some heavy use after it was painted and some of the paint came off after about two years. So it didn’t hold up very long. You have to ask yourself at some point is it worth just selling it and getting a new machine or is it worth keeping for a few more years. In a lot of cases I just like to spray fluid film over it to slow down the rusting process. Thanks for watching!

    They also say don't use it on plastic parts cuz it can dissolve plastic. So pushing it into the gears for instance a Toro quick stick gears are a very hardened plastic and it could actually deteriorate it and make your gears break.

    Okay so I'm assuming the fluid film protects against rust better. But I thought that WD-40 does that anyways.
    So what happens If you have a brand new unit. You don't need the fluid film obviously cuz there's nothing rusted yet. So you just going to spray everything with WD-40?
    Why not spray the whole thing with WD-40 and wipe it down if you have a brand new unit?
    Just some interesting suggestions..

    I was watching some snowblower videos about WD-40 and fluid film sprays like that.
    When it comes to making it more slippery for the snow. They claim using WD-40, fluid film things like that is actually bad..
    What they were stating is it may help stop rust but it actually makes it worse and stick more if you have a coating of these sprays.
    They claim because they are not rated That well for cool temperatures. They will thicken up and not be slick anymore when it gets cold therefore it'll cause more snow to stick.
    So if anyone's using them to make it more slippery they can it'll help it does the opposite in cold weather.
    I don't know if it makes a difference or how true it is but it makes sense.

    Some of your products that you used are not sold under that name here in Canada. What is Fluid Fill? Is it a liquid wax or just WD40? Same question about Liquid Wrench Silicone. I presume that any car parts store has some silicone spray
    Last month, we received our Ariens from the dealer. I did a checkout of the dealer prep, and discovered that all that was done was to put in about 1/2 tank of gas and the engine oil. I did top up the oil to the midpoint of the dipstick holes. I bought ethanol free gasoline (91 octaine). To get 91 octaine, I went to the service station, selected 91octaine. Those pumps have one hose where your octaine selection flows through. I put what I considered to be the first gasoline in the hose into the car, and when about a gallon was transferred, I presumed the rest of the hose was now pure 91 octaine.
    At the end of filling my jerrycan, I stopped the pump and then restarted it using the 87 octaine grade, and put a few gallon sinto the van tank. It least, I got my 91octaine stuff.
    Here in Canada, the largest car parts chain store is called "Canadian Tire". They have the rebranded or equivalent of your mentioned products. I like a product called JigALoo which is amazing for sliding parts that are not exposed to dirt.

  • @muzikmon2267
    @muzikmon2267 Před 2 lety +1

    I mean a snow blower is basically a little car if you think about it.. You have a transmission, you have speeds forwards and reverse, paint with metal screws bolts.. rubber, tires everything..
    Why not just use ceramic wax on the entire product You may have to take the auger off get to everything.
    CERAMIC WAX LAST 2 YEARS ON A CAR!! And remember that's with all seasons including the hot summer hitting the paint, the snow everyday.
    A snow blower is not going to be in this bad elements all the time. Only for maybe what 5 or 6 storms a year at the most. Then it's mostly covered or stored in a shed or in a garage.
    So wouldn't the ceramic wax last even longer.
    If applied correctly it stops rust and everything. AND NOTHING IS GOING TO STICK TO THAT.. WAY BETTER THAN WD-40..
    What are your thoughts?

    • @GarageGear
      @GarageGear  Před 2 lety +1

      I agree that it would theoretically last longer! In my opinion it just takes longer to apply when I can simply spray it down and I’m good to go!

      @@GarageGear definitely see that especially if you work on snow blowers. And obviously can't really hurt. I just hope they're wrong about the paint... That would stink if I started doing that in my brand new Toro and then all the paint started coming off quickly.
      But I definitely would not be spraying that stuff in the quick stick gears. Their plastic not worth taking a chance better off using grease or silicone..
      According to the really popular old dude Paul last name begins with an s. He claims you never have to put any grease or anything in those plastic gears for the quick stick of Toro..
      But I agree I can't see it destroying a big thick plastic shoot.. Maybe it could discolor it over the years who knows.

      Not a lot of dust flying around in the winter time. The oil/wd-40 does wash off after a couple of uses to so I end up respirating to protect it every couple of uses. My Ariens holds up great because of this. I guess it comes down to if you want it clean/shiny with not much protection or oily/possibly dirty and protected. It would be interesting to do a comparison to see which hold up over time. Thanks for watching!
