  • The head of the Army has delivered a speech in London saying this is the moment to defend the democratic values that define us.
In his first public speech, General Sir Patrick Sanders promised to do everything in his power to ensure the British Army plays its part in averting war.
Claire Sadler was at the conference where she listened to the speech.

Time and time again over the last 30 years (yes, even during Gulf War I and Gulf War II), how often have we been told by politicians that the days of great land-battles in Europe are over and the British Army needed to solely concentrate on rapid reaction and anti-terror duties? Fact is, nobody needs an army - until, suddenly, you do. And here we are.

@@DarkShroom Russia swallowed the idea of Nato expanding eastwards to include the Warsaw pact countries and the baltic states but drew the reddest of red lines around any further expansion of nato to include ukraine and georgia. Nato choose to ignore those red lines and that is why Russia invaded. Nato caused this war..
Nato is no longer the good guys. After winning the cold war against the USSR, the West humiliated Yeltsin and Russia instead of trying to recruit a post communist Russia, along with Ukraine and Belarus, far more into the western camp. Soon after Putin came to power he asked when Russia was going to be invited to join Nato only to be rebuffed and told to apply like anyone else even though they were a nuclear power and we had not required our former enemy West Germany to apply to join Nato. A few years later in 2009, Nato announced that Ukraine and Georgia could apply to join which was clearly a hostile act directed at an excluded Russia. Nato ended up recreating the Cold War, mainly due to the need for Nato to have an enemy and to justify continued military expenditure! Nato created all the conditions for the mess we are in. The solution is to sit around the table and end the war in Ukraine before WW3 becomes inevitable.
Nato has not been a force for good ever since the fall of the USSR. Nato bombed civilians in Belgrade, annexed Kosovo by force and turned Kosovo into a mafia state, so setting a post WW2 precedent for Russia to change boundaries by force. Nato/the west caused the Bosnian civil war by first announcing a referendum on independence when (a) the Bosnian Serbs said they were boycotting it and (b) they confirmed the result of independence although the turnout failed to achieve the required two thirds turnout.
Nato and the west were close supporters of the 2014 violent coup in Ukraine that overthrew the democratically elected pro Russian president and gave full support to the subsequent anti Russian, ultra nationalist governments of ukraine which led to the civil war and invasion. The west takes exception to any suggestion of Russian interference in the internal affairs of another state whilst hypocritically openly interfering in the internal affairs of other countries themselves! Just look at the pressure they are putting on Hungary where they clearly back opposition to Viktor Orban.
Above all Nato interventions have always left countries worse off than before and their actions have resulted in millions of refugees pouring into Europe from Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria and Libya to the detriment of Europe. Nato policies have proved to be strongly against Europe's interests. Ukraine is simply the latest failed state left in the wake of failed Nato/Western interventions but this time Nato has picked a fight in the backyard of a nuclear power and has bitten off more than they can chew. Hungary, Slovakia and neutral Austria recognise the truth, the folly and the danger of the totally reckless Nato leadership and how Nato has greatly damaged Europe since the fall of the USSR.

Smaller weaker countries in their orbit must be neutral to survive as history has shown but become hostile or side with an adversary then you will suffer the consequences as Ukraine is suffering now . As for uk forces they are like every incarnation since Edward 1 , highly trained and effective but small with the channel our moat . Our forces material in a full scale war would be exhausted in 8 days and our trained soldiers decimated inside a month . Russia since the breakup of the Soviet Union has mostly shored up conflict on its borders or traditional allies like Syria whereas Nato has become involved all over the world and expanded by 13 countries towards its equal in Russia , who is the aggressor?

They should make peace, obviously! By the way, Ukraine was a peaceful country until 2014 which was when an ultra nationalist, anti russian revolution seized power and it was that revolution and western backing for it which caused the civil war. The invasion of 2022 was caused by Nato refusing to negotiate on ukraine remaining neutral. This war is nato's war.
Furthermore, have you ever asked yourself why Ukraine should rule Russian speaking majority areas in ukraine like Crimea and the Donbas against their will? They had been content to be part of ukraine before the ultra nationalist ukrainians took over. but not afterwards.
I should also explain that Ukraine's borders were never intended to be that of an independent state when they were drawn up by Stalin and Kruschev on a whim but here we have the insanity of the west defending Stalin's and Kruschev's borders as a matter of deep principle, forgetting of course, that nato had set the precedent for changing European borders by force by forcibly annexed Kosovo from Serbia !

1937 Moment? Surely he means 1939 moment, and in any case he should refrain from expressing personal political opinions. Has he never heard of Queen's Regulations or are they no longer applicable. There is nothing new about the philosophy of preserving peace by being prepared for war. to that extent he is right to have an agenda for the future for the armed forces. Getting politicians to agree to his agenda and the numerical status of the armed forces is always a battle for military top brass.

1939 was when Britain and France declared war on Germany, people including Winston Churchill, had been warning that we should be preparing for war for years but the government of the time just appeased Hitler thinking that it would be better to avoid war.
He was not making a political statement, he was making a strategic statement as head of the Army.

1937 was the year the Air ministry began to take the threat of Hitler seriously by aquiring farmland for Airfields in Britain and tendering for new Aircraft designs.
The Spitfire was first tested at Supermarine, Southampton in 1937.
Infact R.G Mitchell, never saw it fight in anger, he died of cancer before the Spitfire entered defensive service.
Most of the smaller sattelite Airfields in southern England were purchased in 1937.
RAF middle Wallop, Chilbolton, Thruxton just three examples of Airfield expansion purchased from local farmers to service Boscombe Down Airfield.
1937 was the point at which Britains military realised Germany had secretly amassed the largest Airforce in Europe against the rules of the treaty of Versaille limiting German weapons production and that Britain had fallen way behind on Aircraft and Tank design. Many of the older British Generals still believed another war would be based in Trench warfare like WW1. They also placed too much faith in the maginot line and the treaty of Versaille.
Thankfully some of the more forward thinking had the foresight to see static warfare was long gone and managed to convince politicians like Churchill Britain needed to act fast to modernise. Hitler had supplied Franco with panzers in order to test them in combat in 1937. Those forward thinking military advisors took note of that. It would take Britain until 1943/4 to catch up with German tank design to effectively tackle heavy panzers. Britain invented the tank then sat back during peacetime and neglected to invest in modernisation of its military. Germany on the other hand had sent military advisors to Russia to copy the Russian tank designs between the two wars.
This is the 1937 moment he refers to here. We have now had an oportunity to watch Russias mechanised capability and putins threats. History demonstrates we should not be caught off guard again. We could have done so much more before 1937 but many political figures and military advisors refused to see the threat.
In time of peace, prepare for war..
