Britain’s Military Capabilities Are “Pathetic” Says Former Armed Forces Minister

- Former Armed Forces Minister Lord Robathan says Britain’s military capabilities are “pathetic”.
It comes as the head of the Army said Britain should “train and equip” a “citizen army” to ready the country for a potential land war.
But General Sir Patrick Sanders, the outgoing Chief of the General Staff (CGS), said even that would be “not enough” as he pointed to allies in eastern and northern Europe “laying the foundations for national mobilisation”.
In a speech on Wednesday, the military top brass said increasing Army numbers in preparation for a potential conflict would need to be a “whole-of-nation undertaking”.
The comments are being read as a warning that British men and women should be ready for a call-up to the armed forces if NATO goes to war with Russia.
Andrew says: “This government needs to realise it has to spend money on defence now, not in 10 years' time. If you haven’t got defences, people sense weakness!”

What is pathetic is the people of Britain not affording electric or food in 2024.
If you feel that strongly about it you could always feed them yourself. More interested in finding out why they can't afford electricity and food - there's always a reason why some seem not to be able to and yet many others on a similar income manage even if that manage means getting a job, learning how to cook, how to budget how not to smoke, drink, take drugs, live on fast food or not sit in a front room in a T shirt. Note - not saying all. I'm sure somewhere in the country there are people deserving of a little help but self help is the most sustainable type and the easiest to get too.

Single parent with two kids im an electrical engineer decent wage few years ago but now cant afford to own a home or a car I skip meals so my kids can eat I pay my bills the system is against me im just a slave like many other parents we realise our kids don't belong to us but the gov and and abusive mother can take my kids away anyday now I'd not respect anybody wanting to fight for this current system
Meanwhile in R(_)$$!@, gas is £4.50 per month for UNLIMITED gas!! Now who lives in the free country???? Not the country that looks after it's people....
They could choose to work to enable them to buy the basics. Most would just rather put their hands out smoke or drink it away and then whine because they don't want to be held responsible for their plight and it's better to play the victim and point the finger of blame at others who have decided to take responsibility for their lives.
What's pathetic is the government allowing them to do so and people like you turning them into victims and allowing them to think it's okay to be irresponsible.

The Brits were known as ‘the borrowers’ during the Iraq war as they didn’t have enough equipment even then.
I have worked with people who were in "the mob" in the 50's and 60's and the same title applied then. Britain's biggest enemy is its politicians.

It always amazes me why these senior officers wait till they have left before speaking out about cuts to the armed forces.

It was bad as far back as the 80's. Cost cutting, cut backs, penny pinching, limited ammo for training and practice.

If you have a homogeneous society with a limited number of overseas people living in your country, like Ukraine, people can identify with their fellow citizens. In our case, it's very different and my family fought in the second world war for the UK. I rather suspect, if they were alive today, they would be upset and be confused as to why a war had been fought, at all.
This makes it rather more difficult to explain why a war needs to be fought, at all, and why we don't just abandon the need to defend the realm, in the same way that Ireland do. They have no armed forces and live as a peaceful nation, rather like Switzerland.
As we have returned self governance to all the commonwealth, it seems that our role should be as a true ambassador for peace.
Well, why not destroy our defenses? tbf, the dirt in WEFminster have pretty much ruined everything else...NHS, police, welfare, education, the border.....

I am an ex regular soldier who served in Airborne forces. Prior to that I was in Royal Marine Reserve. As a British citizen one day we might be called upon to fight for our country.
My mothers generation fought in world war 2 they were called upon to serve their country! They never said what’s it’s values or any such thing claptrap! . It was war we were being invaded by hostile enemy aircraft with possible land invasion. What Churchill said to all British citizens we will fight the enemy on the beaches, we will fight them in the air we will fight in the sea we fight them in the hills and we will never surrender! He Didn’t say now think about the values of the country! No he said we have to fight for our freedom and way of life! Simple. If we have to serve national service and do 12 to 18 months military service so be it! It’s part of being a British citizen of the United Kingdom it’s a duty simple as!

Lower the high standards for joining armed forces.
In one year you can have 500,000 soldiers and sailors and airforce and they can achieve high standard pass mark's when they reach their respective regiments and bases
