I hate movies, books and shows that think adult, mature and realistic just means more gore and swearing
as someone who plays videogames as my my main hobby, I cannot escape. the amount of times I've wanted something that isn't shallow, vapid, over the top violence after tons of reviewers say that its a mature story is overwhelming. Like the amount of people who praise grand theft auto 5 for its torture scenes over its tongue and cheek satire makes me depressed.
I've had this same fucking discussions with my now ex-gf soo many times, for some people the fucked up concept of general target of a story is so fucking engrained in their brain that they can't escape it. Ironically those discussions always ended up with grimdark vibes and attempted murders AND THAT IS A JOKE KIDS THAT STOLE MUM'S IPAD.

I just wanted to say thank you. I've loved reading since I was a kid, but my boyfriend has always hated the idea of reading. I'd try to convince him to pick up a book, but he just wasn't interested.
I showed him one of your videos. Something you said must have spoke to him and he decided to pick up The Shining. Well, he finished it and came to me and said, "Books are way better than movies! Being in the character's head is so cool!" He loved it so much, he picked up The Stand. Took him less than a month to finish and he loved it even more. Now, he's dipping his toes into fantasy with Mistborn.
I just hope this message brightens your day and reminds you of the good work you do. I tried for a while, but I could never spark my boyfriend's interest with books. He watched maybe 2 of your videos and has seen the light. There are a lot of loud people out there who probably like to make your job annoying, but I hope this brings you joy. My boyfriend and I have our own little book club now and I couldn't have done it without you!

In all seriousness, I appreciate this rant. It's a lively reminder that all genres are valid and worthy of appreciation on a level that can appeal to all adults. A quality book articulates its points and themes well, and that's something not gated by or from adults or genre.

Someone made a comment about anger management lol. I feel like this was sorta fun angry? Like if Daniel were one of my friends talking specifically to me, I feel like I could diffuse this super easily. It feels non threatening and I think that's very much the key to it remaining amusing.
I don't know if most people have experiences with the threatening kind (my upbringing maybe skewed my perspective on what's normal there) but if anyone is confused, I think that's the difference.
I think it's also important to note that things you might think are harmless like destruction of property can be pretty scary for the people who live around you so that's important to think about.

Ahh yes, the old “no deaths and gore = bad” argument.
Personally I have more of a problem with the “this thing is a masterpiece BECAUSE it has a lot of deaths and gore”. Like, no? Just because characters die left and right doesn’t make it good story telling. I’d always prefer a well explained revival or fake-out death to an unnecessary death for shock value.
I'm with you in this.
There are two reasons for explicit depictions of gore or any other "adult content" as far as I know:
1) naturalism, realism, essentially just stylistic choice of leaving things unpolished, which may or may not enhance the themes and characters
2) porn
These, of course, are not mutually exclusive. But I'd bet it's 9 times out of 10 just porn, i.e. cheap way to excite the audience, without the insight to really add anything else to the topics it deals with. And even when they do, I'm not a big fan of it. In fact, I often admire creativity in explaining the same things indirectly, in which some of the classics do - sometimes - a very good job.
And just for the record, I've seen an unnecessary _revival_ for shock value. It was actually kinda impressing, not the least because I had never seen it before.
@@pRahvi0 Meh, shock value, death and gore can be entertaining as hell. Dumb deaths are annoying 100% of the time, of course, but that is another issue. Bring on the violence, I say. And don't be stingy on the horrific details 😁 I can't think of one damn example where gore and violence has harmed a good story. ^^
@@firvantavan2793 I suppose it's very much a matter of taste, whether or not you like the ugly details shown. I personally do not, most of the time, but I certainly acknowledge their potential. And it's not like I can't stand them at all, I just get a figurative hangover from such content very easily, after which point it _can_ harm my experience of the story.

Today should have been my 6th wedding anniversary to my soulmate. My true partner throughout all time.
Unfortunately she passed away a year and 3 weeks ago. But she got to see me enjoying your content when I started watching over 2 years ago and would often ask what I was laughing about only to hear me describe something you had just said :)
She was an educator. Taught kindergarten, was a director for a child care facility...
And is the reason the early childhood education program in Oregon was even put in the ballot to be voted on.
There was another bill being looked at along with it, and it wasn't certain if either was going to make it.
But she was the heart and soul of the company that was working with the minority non-profits of Portland and the school system for years that got it out together in the first place.
Her passing put that bill up for vote & it passed.
No matter what, millions of lives are going to be changed for the better because of the absolutely amazing human my wife was.
And I want you to know that more than once you brought a smile to her face, even while dealing with incredible health challenges while succeeding in actually making this world a better place.
And she would be incredibly proud of you right now
Honestly, I find most grimdark far less nuanced and intellectually interesting than most non-grimdark works. There are lots of grim dark stories that are extremely nuanced and interesting, but a lot of them that I’ve read tend to end up being just a bunch of half baked nihilism to appeal to edgy teenagers

Best instructions to a story i have ever seen
Literature is an art, not what the reader expects. Yes readers can desire certain things, but the ultimate choice belongs to the writer. If you don't like the damn book because it doesn't meet your expectations, put the thing down and move on to a new book. Daniel is making such a very great point here. It is also pertinent to say, if you don't like what someone is saying, move on.
Daniel, your rant is well merited and has some extreme standing for all of us as authors.
Very general comment: as an adult who loves The NeverEnding Story in book and movie format and who read The Giver in 5th grade, I say read whatever suits your fancy regardless of who it's intended for or if others say not "grimdark" enough.
Hey also some adults have PTSD and maybe they don’t have a good time reading Grimdark. That doesn’t make us non adults lol. I love watching reviews/discussions of Grimdark material so I can get some of the story without having a panic attack. But for real. Don’t insult people who want to have a good time reading a book even if it’s not your favorite genre.
I had the same thing. I would get panic attacks when reading Prince of Thorns and the First Law. It was hard for me to read about a world where it feels like there are no good people and the world has no hope. It just burned me out.
After therapy I was able to read First Law but Prince of Fools still makes me uneasy.
Most GrimDark authors learned from the pros who weren't dark. Having Said that, the Brothers Grimm fairy tales are much darker thank Disney stuff

Hey Daniel! I teach English 9 and I agree with your point about not explaining to students that a text can be more than just for enjoyment. This is something that I have tried to get across to my students in the past, but because of your rant I will make sure to add extra emphasis to this point. I'm introducing the novels for this quarter to my classes this coming week and will make sure to spend time explaining this. Thank you!

Daniel I must thank you. You have taught me both through this rant and other videos that the most important thing to understand about literature is that everyone has their own taste and opinions, but those opinions don’t make my thoughts and opinions invalid. Thank you.

100% agree with the education system thing. I got lucky in that I actually really enjoyed books like Macbeth, Lord of the Flies, Brave New World, and especially To Kill a Mockingbird, but I think literally all my friends suffered through the English classes when trying to answer the quintessential high school English class question of “what’s the deeper meaning here?” After freshman year, I can count on one hand people I knew who actually liked reading after that.
I don’t think there’s anything particularly wrong with the exploration of themes, characters, and values that many school systems employ, but as Daniel said, there is absolutely no distinction between what you read for enjoyment, and what you read to learn about times, topics, themes, values, viewpoints, and subjects often times different than your own. Unless you get that one top tier teacher who understands what you’re going through, of course, but that’s not a reliable model to follow.

My 12-grade English teacher was OBSESSED with symbolism & we hated it. I also hated All Quiet on the Western Front.
@@tmntaddict Yeah I think focusing on analysis based on literary devices only tells half the story. The other half if the characters, the people you read about, or the people you literally experience while reading the book, and I think a lot of high school classes miss that point. I'm fairly certain it's because it's far simpler to write papers based on very well, almost rigidly defined concepts.
On another note, I used to be a real ra-ra "war is a glorious journey!" kinda guy. The whole, kids went off to fight in 1914 cause they thought it would a "grand adventure". Then I read All Quiet on the Western Front. It really opened my eyes to the personal experience of war and what it does to all unfortunate enough to get caught up in it.
I completely understand not liking the book though, it's not everyone's favorite cup of tea, and that's okay.
@@the_arora804 Its interesting thats its from a german ww1 soldier describing the horror of wars and alienation and ptsd. I dont think it is meant to be pleasent and at best have gallows humor. Its probably still highly value if you hate it, but the teacher probably wasnt good at explaining its that, a ww1 veteran describing war and why its not good nor glorious and super damaging soldiers. And that htler even banned it because , well. Which should be the main point not symbolism.
@@marocat4749 Yeah, I can't speak to anyone else's experience with the book, but the book undoubtedly teaches some valuable lessons and has a very relevant message. Personally, I saw it in one of the classrooms and asked my teacher if I could borrow it because it seemed like an interesting book.
@@the_arora804 For me it's being force-fed books. I'm sure for many being force-fed anything doesn't work, but the strict impression I got in high school which may never really change was "we are requiring you to ingest the meanings of these stories which you will be graded on. Now do it!" School systems need to be taught flexibility with how students learn from literature. Even now, +20 yrs later, I still don't know if I'd re-read Grapes of Wrath, All Quiet, whatever else there was. I think I only mildly enjoyed the greek mythology since there was no deep meaning to pick apart.
One of my favorite fantasy stories is the Netflix She-Ra reboot, it has amazing character work. This being a show that is virtually the OPPOSITE of grimdark. Thank you for the defense of lighthearted fantasy!

I actually find that it's the other way around, it's happened quite a few times that people have downplayed great manga or anime by calling it 'edgy' I've heard it more than once in reference to Berserk or the Tokyo ghoul manga.
@@tygerchase9705 I liked some of Tokyo ghoul, but the amount of fighting in it irked me. I wished it would’ve explored some of the characters more when not in their heads in the midst of combat. Granted those scenes and episodes we’re good, I just wished for a bit more balance between fighting and more peaceful-ish exploration of character

Largely agree, but in respect of art films like the Green Knight, if they don’t want people to review them badly for not being “entertaining”, they shouldn’t market themselves as “entertainment “. For example, don’t put out a trailer that makes your film look like an action movie if you don’t want a disappointed reaction from action movie fans.
I agree completely. The Joker for instance is an Art film not an action movie but was marketed as such and a lot of people Review bombed it because of that.
Hard disagree. The team behind marketing strategies and editing trailers are 99% of the time completely separate from the big brains that birthed the piece.

For myself, I read primarily for entertainment, but I am entertained by learning something, if that makes sense. I love classics, and I’m finally dipping my toe into sci-fi. I also enjoy fantasy, classic mysteries, middle grade and literary fiction. I find these things entertaining because I learn so much about human nature and humanity from reading them. I don’t know if this makes any sense. I think you can be educated and entertained at the same time, but our educational systems don’t teach us how to do that. They introduce things to us as though they are too complicated for us to understand or enjoy, which is off-putting.

The entertainment part I feel is more applied to authoritorial intent rather than your own, kinda. Marvel movies for the easy example like Daniel said, they're made and watched for entertainment purposes,...
...but The Green Knight (again, easy quick example) does not seek your entertainment, it wants to tell a different kind of story that won't try to keep you engaged by a regular stream of dopamine. You finding entertaining something that's not trying to be that (in this context) says a lot of good about your literary taste.

Dude you totally called it. I stopped reading in high school because I they gave me a slew of books I hated without context, like The Great Gatsby. I still dislike that book, and that was actually the one that made me walk away. In the beginning I liked what they were giving me, like Animal Farm and Of Mice and Men, but later in high school I was turned off to reading fiction. Now I'm a sci-fi author. The universe is crazy.

I took two literature courses in college and it changed how I look at literature. I like the entertainment value but it usually goes deeper than that. I'm also lucky enough to have a friend on the same page were we buddy read and discuss the novels we read. My current favorite it Interview with the Vampire commenting on the human condition.
The books also have great commentary on sexuality at least before it goes off the rails

I’m convinced that people who get like that are people who don’t like the idea of learning to be a better person through reading between the lines of literary allegory. Terry Pratchett’s books make you a better person, good grim dark even makes you face the cruelty of people so that we can recognize it in reality and avoid/fix it.

I love a lot of classics even if I'm not "entertained" by them the same way I am with more modern books. I change my expectations and my perspective when reading classics and can always take away a lot of positive things from them, even if the premise or plot wouldnt be something I'd normally seek out l. Classic for a reason, I've learned.
In my mind “grim dark” is 40k and there’s a huge gap between that and some murder murder stab stab cry feels bad.
Things can have adult themes without being “grim dark”
