    @chippievw Take note of how the locking pliers are being utilized. While in place the pliers prevent the lower swing arm from moving back in to place with wheel bearing carrier. Without this technique the wheel bearing carrier would have to be removed. Not a farmer but a seasoned BMW mechanics trick of the trade.
    Thanks for viewing.

    Great Video! Thanks very much for posting this! I really enjoy your Bentley Manual for my BMW X5 too.
    I have cut off a few old joints, but I didn't have to with this procedure on my 11yr old BMW. The Vise Grips worked great.
    I worked slowly and managed to change both of my upper rear control arms in about 3 hours.

    @chippievw The hex on the ball joint stud was worn and being New England vehicle this being common. Vise grip is best way to deal with it.

    I was not, I had to carefully use a propane torch set low then it came right off. Thank you for your response and tutorial however.

    does the vehicle require an alignment after this replacement when you included the guiding suspension link also

    @bcbp14 Are you using flat jaw vice grips?

  • @jnambo5500

    Should everything be tightened while car weight is on it or can this be done without weight on the control arm?

    The ball joint/bolt spin when I use my vice grips. The nut is seized up, PB Blaster and a mallet don't seem to work.

    @nick6kcin Im going to have to take your word for it, but Id change wording to use a spanner, and if that fails, then use grips.

    Is it necessary to raise the suspension to ride height before tightening everything. Or put weight on the car before I torque to the correct specs?

      late reply, but yes bro, load the hub, see my channel

  • @sanjinred
    @sanjinred Před 5 lety +1

    Why aligned? You dont need to align by changing this control arm. Also, the torque needs to be set correctly with some load on it or else it will be wrong. You can use a work shop jack lift under the hub or wheel

  • @leadsafe2k
    @leadsafe2k Před 12 lety

    never mind yest alignment required missed that at the end of video.
    what I struggle with is "torque with suspension loaded" and how this would be accomplished if you have to put wheel back on and have no access to do final torque.

      very late reply, see my channel for loading, and yes he missed the alignment bolt place

    I just did this and my only tip is not to use a vise grips instead use a 10 mm socket and ratchet to hold the end on the bolt while removing the nut.

    • @jnambo5500
      @jnambo5500 Před 8 lety

      Question. So before you tighten everything do I jack up the suspension a bit to simulate the tire being on the car before torquing everything? Idk if I'm making any sense or if yu understand what I mean. Thanks

    • @javarithms
      @javarithms Před 8 lety +1

      +Jose Nambo you're correct. lift it all the way.

      +javarithms great thanks!!! Hope it all goes smooth

    • @javarithms
      @javarithms Před 8 lety +1

      Just to be clear you only need to lift up the suspension to torque down the bushing not the ball joint.
      It's a fairly straightforward install. Pay attention to Nm vs ft/lb it's easy to get them confused. Be safe and good luck!

    1.15, he locks it on a perfectly good bolt end machined with a hex to accept spanner.

  • @Andrew1youssef

    I have tried to use several vice grips (flat jaw) and I was able to break the ball joint nut loose and unthread it just a tiny bit but not It wont move out any more and the hex end is so worn that it wont grip on any vice grip! I have read in the comments with someone with the same problem and he used propane torch. do you suggest using that or any other ideas?

      @austigm3888 Před 5 lety

      extremely late reply, but use an impact wrench with deep flexible socket, those fancy tutorials will show you the long procesd done easyly, but no single mention of camber bolts or difficult parts

    Vicegrips, on a Bmw while doing a tech by Bentley = Fail. Sorry Bentley, vicegrips are for farmers.
