How to make HUGE live edge cutting, charcuterie or butcher boards!

- Since cutting boards are the latest woodworking craze... I decided to make a couple with a twist... different... something that could be decor when not in use...Annnnd here they are. Two HUGE 2 1/4” thick, 30” long and 15-30” wide Beast live edge cutting boards! I used walnut for one and caramel ash for the other. I chose boards with imperfections for a challenge. I filled the voids with several layers of epoxy resin and inlayed the cracks with walnut bow ties before filling them with epoxy. Routed handles into the ends and installed adjustable levelers under the boards. Sanded from 40 grit to 800 then several applications of mineral oil over a couple of days to cure the board. I came into some live edge cutoffs I thought could maybe used for cutting boards. I'd never made a CB from a live edge so I searched CZcams to see if anyone had made one and found your video. Awesome! I'm off to the shop to make some of my own!
I also admire and appreciate the fact you use hobbyist-quality tools like me rather than Festool stuff, 24" planners, etc. Even your butterfly ties were hand cut! Kudos. The boards are beautiful, your video is well produced and easy to follow, and the content is on point and purely instructional and informative (i.e. no cutaways for jokes or self-promotion or cutesy stuff).

Awesome look! I've got some large similarly sized cedar slabs I've been trying to decide what to do with. What kind of price range would you expect these to sell at?
Great video! Watched it with my 12 year old son who is learning woodworking. His question is regarding sanding. He noticed you went well above 220 grit to 800 grit. We were under the impression that much higher than 220 and the wood won’t soak up as much mineral oil. He/we have made several cutting boards and are still learning better practices. Can you give some guidance on this to him/us? Thank you!

How long did you let the wood dry, or did you process the wood straight from its raw form?
I'm getting ready to start a similar. I'm trying to decide whether or not if i want to remove the bark. Is there ever a danger of the barn falling off down the road?
How are they holding up? how do u wash them?
Good lord them are nice. What did you do to the bark? How should one of these cost? I'm thinking way more that a typical cut board.

Hi Matthew! I've watched damn near 2 dozen of your shows!...lol. I have a 4' x 2' live edge that I want to make a hall table out of. I'm planning on using epoxy.
Wouldn't it have been better to use an epoxy rather than an oil finish? For durability, and to prevent cut marks?

I think it might need to be a food-grade epoxy. I suspect you might still get cut marks, though probably not as deep. But if you did use epoxy, be sure to coat all sides to reduce warping from humidity changes.
How do you keep the bark from coming off.

I make a lot of boards leaving as much bark on as I can. Did you just oil the bark and that’s it? Are you not afraid of the bark drying and chipping off?
Where are you ? The Carmel ash is interesting.. how cloce to Indianapolis In. Is you area to get some of it?
Would a hand plane not handle resurfacing better?

Nope. Not yet. It was on tight with moisture below 8%.

There were cracks in the wood at that place. It helps to keep the cracks from spreading. Epoxy is pretty strong, but never hurts to have backup.

What kinda price do you get for cutting boards like that?
After applying all the coats of finish/oil, what are the steps you tell your customers for washing after use? I made one that a customer washed and it split the wood once it dried…
Oh Noooooo....... The customer cannot wash these. its like a cast iron skillet. You wipe down and re-oil. Dry wood cannot be washed. Absorbs all the moisture and expands. when it drys it will crack as it shrinks.
you need to check out the Johnathan Katz-Moses goo video. food grade mineral oil and food grade bees wax. keeps the board oiled

Should really remove the bark. That’s where the bugs and mold live. It will fall off eventually.
