  • With the limited space in the Mercedes R230 SL I show you how you can keep the maximum space but still add huge bass to your car with the huge 13" JL 13TW 5.3 Shallow mount sub. I explain how the sub produces different bass in different parts of the car and my preference on where best to place it.
The video shows how to make the perfect size box of 0.8ft³ or 22L that is needed for the huge JL 13TW 5.3 Shallow mount subwoofer, fully carpeted and installed. I also show how to connect to the existing wiring for the sub and where to mount the amplifier.
Lastly a quick look at some JL Tweeters I installed too to lift the treble in the front and how to connect them.

Great video. I also have a sub in the box behind seats and want to move it to the trunk. I did not realize that you can keep the Bose sub in the footwell also. Previous owner replaced all Bose speakers with JL speakers and removed the Bose sub. I guess, I will put the Bose sub back into the foowell.

You did not mention if the AUDIO feed from the Car Amplifier is from the low level Head Unit or a splice into the high level amp out. Alternativly did you use the LINE IN on your JL amp or the SPEAKER IN? Guessing the JL powers on when it detects Audio? Also what YEAR is your vehicle, mine is a 2011 SL350.

Hi there, the audio input to the amp was the mauve and brown wires from the wiring loom at the CD changer area (see 13:40) then just add a low pass filter pre-amp. The switch cable (blue) just turns on with power to the wiring loom from the Comand unit. Car is 2004 SL350 with 3.7L

Really appreciate your fast response and generous help. Viewed your video twice, do not recall any mention of the factory system manufacturer and specs in your car. I have been searching for a U-Tube video showing where to connect additional subwoofer amplifiers from the premium Harman Kardon factory subwoofer feed in my Australian spec 2011 SL350. Every post found so far over the past few years has been for older overseas SL350 (or associated) models and not sure if the audio systems pre 2008 has a similar factory sub setup to access. I listen to Electronic House and Club music (I am a DJ and the premium Harman Kardon system in my 2011 C250 CDi Avantgarde Estate has heaps of great bass compared to the SL350 so an extra sub is not required in that vehicle.) So far my option might be to locate the SL350 subwoofer (passenger footwell) and take a signal from there to the 'Speaker' inputs of my two sub amps driving the subs in the 'boot-trunk'@@GrooveOn

@@wallen9119 all good info you have and yes you could simply tap the sub in the footwell. I will have a look at my car this week and get back to you as it's been a while.

Prefer to locate the amp if it is behind the driver seat as taking a (Sub Out) feed from there would be easier and basically the same principle as your video post. No rush for a reply. Regards Wayne Allen. Adelaide Australia.@@GrooveOn

@@wallen9119 I'll have a look I think I had a schematic showing the mauve and brown wire which I think is what connects to front sub, I'll check
