  • @junado
    @junado Před 2 lety +42

    Just an FYI, it's likely cracking because of the end grain to side grain connection. The middle (chevron) pieces are drying out and shrinking across their width, but are constrained by the rails (and the dominos used to secure it). You've essentially made a giant breadboard end without allowing for wood movement.

    • @bailyboop
      @bailyboop Před 2 lety +17

      This project will be a tough lesson on wood movement.

    • @w2ttsy670
      @w2ttsy670 Před 2 lety +5

      That was my thought too. If I remember, the reasons that shaker panels are installed into rabbets is to allow the panels to move independently of the rails and styles.
      This would have worked better if the chevrons had been cut with a spline that allows them to slot into a grove along the styles.

    • @EduardoAndreotti2
      @EduardoAndreotti2 Před 2 lety +1

      Hey guys, I'm considering building an outdoor gate with the same design. What would be the right construction method to avoid the cracks? Should I use tongue and groove to connect everything? For the inside panels, should I use glue or leave them loose to allow for wood movement. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks!

    • @T3chnoJunk13
      @T3chnoJunk13 Před 2 lety

      Well he said he's not afraid to fail... that fail will only be seen later.

    • @junado
      @junado Před 2 lety +4

      @@EduardoAndreotti2 There are a few things to consider, the way you join the frame is up to you (dominos, dowels, tongue and grove, etc). The most important thing is that wood expands and contracts across its width, so you need to account for that. The easiest way, for a door in that style, would be to construct it like a frame and panel door and make sure the panel part (the chevrons) sits in deep enough grooves that it can move. It would also help to not glue them all together, so the movement can be spread across a few different panels.
      Veneer or using plywood for the chevrons is another option that would work. Using plywood strip instead of solid wood for the chevrons would let you glue everything solid as per this video.

    Gotta agree with other folks in the comments, the first stain looked better in my opinion.
    Also, I’d love to see an episode where you addressed what you learned about the cracking in the wood. I get that the doors are up now and you’ll just look at them as “adding character” (I’d do the same thing), but you didn’t intend for them to be there. So, I’d really get a lot from an episode where you discuss what you’d do differently if you could.

    Gorgeous Alex. I hate gel stain. I always show the customer a sample piece of wood before staining everything. It's crazy how different woods can take the same stain and look wildly different

    That second stain was beautiful absolutely gorgeous. Your wife tries to make it seem like she’s always right but she’s not. I’ve been watching your video’s. Good luck with the rest of the house man. I appreciate all the manhours you’ve put in to make someone else happy.

    Regarding the cracks you mentioned at the end:
    Did you use framing lumber? If so the boards probably weren’t completely dried. As they dried they shrunk a little causing the cracks you noticed.

    • @teejer90
      @teejer90 Před 2 lety +1

      @@waynetibak1828 that doesn’t entirely address my point. Dimensional lumber could be green or kiln dried which have drastically different moisture contents. Kiln dried should not have the problem I was describing

    • @rchavez5056
      @rchavez5056 Před 2 lety

      @@teejer90 Even kiln dry dimensional lumber is not dry enough to not get movement after it dries. I made a "nice" table once with kiln dried lumber. After it dried it still shrank 1/4 in some places.

    to keep them closed when desired, you could add a couple recessed magnets at the top/bottom so the doors aren't bouncing around

    The differing variation in grain orientation is going to get sketchy from a wood movement perspective. Hi likelihood of warping or cracking as moisture levels change.

    Awesome job man!! Also I’m pretty sure that wood started shrinking because it isn’t fully dried from the stores anymore.. I helped my boss build a deck and we didn’t even put spacing between planks and now they’re all evenly spaced out by about a quarter inch! Nice job though those doors are sweet!

    Dude, you are a stud. 99% of the people would have quit and left it at the fruitwood.. you saying that was the hardest doors you built and that's why you wanted to finish it right and strong is a lesson to all the quitters out there. Good job, man.

    Mate you did such a nice job with the doors, the fruitwood stain looked fantastic, showed off the hard work and timber grains, it's a shame your misses likes the look of mud instead of timber, I think they would have looked better white than the final colour, but each to their own.

    Just a suggestion, use tongue and groove boards for center section of door to account for wood movement

  • @hachmannfamilyemail4877

    We made a DIY Barn door: we took a regular door and then we mostly just put it on rails we stained it we have to go over it and it's nice we have to finish it still. 💞

    Love the design and they look beautiful in the space! Always amazing what you’re able to build and how great each piece is. Gel stain did hide some of the wood grain I think. Did you find that the sanding affected any of the grain or how the final product turned out having had done it 3 times?
