  • This piece has a tempo of Andante. That's unusual for a first movement. Although the Moonlight Sonata also starts with a slower movement so Beethoven uses that approach elsewhere. The mood of the first theme is questioning, uncertain. Second theme is cheerful, almost playful. The cadence theme is foreboding, forecasting a certain fate. Listen for the chromatic approach to the dominant preparation at the end of the development section, m.53. I think it's a variation on a German 6th chord, because of the appoggiatura A to G in the right hand. It becomes the most haunting chord in this piece. Also note that Beethoven chooses to use the Tierce de Picardy to counteract the gravitas and end on a hopeful major chord.
