At a time in this world when the "old guys" are retiring or well...you know...nice to see someone teaching younger folks about fixing stuff. As a early 40s mechanic myself...it's great to see not only young people like Rachel here getting the work done, but women getting into the trade, need more of this type of encouragement.
Its nice when a business that sells parts is honest about troubleshooting instead of just saying you should replace everything.

I always like to keep the original component with the tractor when ever possible. The Mom and Pop starter and alternator shops that are willing to work on these. Are getting more and more scarce. This certainly shows how with a little time and few parts an original starter can be saved. You are a talented teacher/speaker. I espically thought the explanation how to orient the brushes in their holders was superb! Thanks, Gingells

what a kool dad....i have a 1953 farmall super H....I finally found the owners manual....still learning how to use a voltmeter...you make everything seem easy...and thank you....one day I might be ordering parts from you guys...my father is from the upper penisula woods....he can build anything and work on everything...he is still a live he had cross cut at one time...thank you for the youtube .

Thanks again - I followed your disassembly and replaced the Bendix drive in my starter and instead of making an awful noise and not engaging it works as it should. The horrible noise is gone and the Bendix engages all the time now. I also saw another video from someone else that used blocks of wood to pry the brushes back for assembly on top of a large soup/stew can :) worked like a charm ! Thanks again !

First, great instructional video! It may be called something different where you're from, but I learned the parts of an electric motor as: rotor, stator, commutator, and brushes. Btw, if you're replacing the 'fields' you should see if the new fields have been properly matched. Use your ohmmeter to test in microohm range. Both should be very similar readings, ideally within 10% of each other. Love the video.

Another consideration as well that a lot of people sometimes overlook is yes a battery has a 12v charge but has a bad cell. For those that don't know a 12 volt battery has 6 cells (6 volt has 3 cells). Its common (particularly on older 12 volt batteries) to have a cell go bad and a owner charge the battery, stick a voltmeter on it, see 12ish volts, and say it's good. Basically the other cells are overcharged (on 12 volt battery each cell would only have to be .4 volts or so overcharged) making up for the dead cell voltage wise. What wouldn't be made up for is the lack of amperage. On a 600 CCA battery you're losing 100 CCAs of the battery. That's 17 percent of your cranking power. Really need to use a load tester on batteries to test them the right way particularly if they are older.
Buying a load tester was a game changer for me trouble shooting.
I agree with you, but she made it easy on the beginner without overloading them with T M I.
That would be a good idea for her to have another troubleshooting video. I like my cheep Harbor Freight load tester. It has never failed on me.
Or if in doubt, just use another battery temporarily and see whether there is a difference.

I came looking for some nostalgia about the fabulous Ferguson 30 and 35,,, which models were So common on NZ farms in the 50s and 60s...still plenty of them around doing humble towing work. Here in Masterton we have John Deere, Deutz-Fahr, Kubota and New Holland-- all clustered in friendly competition just 4 Km from here, in this sheep farming, wine-producing region.
An aside... a few months ago one 15 yr old girl i was tutoring said she wants to be a mechanic.. runs in her family... looking at her in her tall blonde elegance I said teasingly, "You can't--you'll break a nail." But good on her if she turns out anything like Rachel.

Very informative video. Does it matter that the wire stud on the starter was located on the side at first but after you reinstalled the starter it was now located on the top? I thought with the way all the components were keyed that the position of the stud would not change.

Knowledgeable and hands on: the best.
I test the switch/battery the same as you, but with the starter still connected, dad turns the key, starter Motor turns or clicks, but a 12 volt reading on the starter motor connection means battery and switch are ok.

This appears to be the same starter as on my AC D14. I am going to "best effort" go through this repair procedure on that starter this coming weekend. Never done this type repair before. Wish me luck.

To clean corroded battery terminals, you can use baking soda, (sodium bicarbonate) and hot water, use a paint brush to brush on or just pour it over the corroded area.

Very informative! So my starter spins strong but not engaging flywheel. when tested on a battery after removing it wont extend to engage the flywheel. Suggestions? Very clean inside teeth looks mint.

great video.. my starter passed of of thous tests .. but the starter drive did not, i noticed that my starter is not the same same as the one you are working at tho, the is the same , mine have got a standard leaver , and it's got the little switch that connects up the power for the starter, my old tractor is a b414 international 1964 diesel McCormick , wonder where i could get a new drive i cant get one here don't have it ..cant order it..i have 110 tooth on the ring gear, how many teeth should i have on my driver gear?

we have a 706 frame all tractor diesel it's about a 60 model i drive thru the field stopped and shutting it off and trying to starting it back up and it didn't start we had the battery check out and thay where good and wires to where good. i used a screwdriver to jump it it was dragging a little bit after a few times it was it

Hi Rachel. I inherited my Dad's 1947 Farmall M. The battery is a 6 volt and no longer holds a charge. If I use a 12 volt battery to start the tractor can I just go with negative ground or does the starter need to be wired differently?

i got question on field coils, is there difference between 6 volt and 12 volt field coils?
Is there any particular setting you are using on the Ohm meter at the beginning of the armature test at 7:20?
Yes, use the lowest setting (ours is ten ohms or less but they vary). You're simply trying to verify continuity.

Years ago a tractor my buddy had would not start regardless of anything done. I turned out some one had actually charged a 12v battery backwards! Seriously ..
If you take a stone dead battery and hook up charger backwards it charges opposite. I found it using a multimeter . Test light could not determine this. Crazy huh?

The ground wire should be connected to one of the Starter bolts 6 vote Systems will start as good as 12 that’s what I want
So if the fields aren't shorted, what is the ideal ohm value for a good motor field??
There really isnt an exact specification for resistance in the field. Basically what you are looking for is a low number. If you have numbers above 100 ohms, you most likely have some wear. If it is an extremely large number or O.L. it's best to replace.

I got readings of 000.5 on everything I tested. What is a good reading?
Forgot to check that windings didn't have shorts to ground with the ohm meter.
