fix the WORST SOUNDING EXHAUST with a ONE SIMPLE CHANGE?

- I wanted to try something I had never done on an exhaust before, and that was using an X pipe and a Y pipe at the same time. I was trying to achieve a unique sound, and while we did accomplish that, the resonance and drone it produced inside the cab was so annoying, I had to park the truck for a while. Part of the problem was the lack of a tailpipe, so we'll add one of those, along with a resonator to try and tame things just a little bit.

Seems like I'm never satisfied with the sound of any exhaust, but this one has me second guessing myself on the choice of muffler. I like the overall tone of the sound, but its got just a bit too much volume.
magnaflow has a kit to tune out drone. kevin from the utube channel lite brite did a show with richard on his drift vette that eliminated the drone
The J-pipe is going to be the best return on time investments here, short of a OEM jumbo muffler & e-cutout. You'll be able to get that 2200rpm frequency with a phone app and tune most of out out. Your truck definitely has the space for it.
You might like the 50 series flowmaster better.
20:13 Sounds A Reeeeeeal Nice.
I plan on putting a Nascar style boom tube on my '88 OBS....oh and i'm in my 40's, LOL
Move the resonator to the front of the system. The drone starts up front and travels down the pipe. Also it will bring the flow master sound back. If you have ever done a cat delete and kept the same muffler you will get the drone. Yet if you leave the cats but remove the muffler it sounds good in the cab still. I just fought this on my Audi s4. They make resonated down pipes for this exact reason on the Audi. Hope this helps.
Do u feel the resonators handle the engine heat ok up front?
Im currently planning my jeep exhaust and have a couple ideas floating.
@@klampykixx Yes they do actually. The car gets driven pretty hard and they have been solid for 2 years now. The drone inside the car was really bad at highway speeds. The mufflers at the back did make a difference but it had the harmonics up front that created the annoyance inside until I resonated the downpipes. Night and day difference in the driving experience of the car.
@@handothemagnifico A lot of vehicles use resonators in the rear by the bumper, so they must work back there. A resonated downpipe is just to make up for a cat delete, not because it's the best possible placement of the resonator in the entire system.
An example is the Charger/Challenger. People do a rear resonator delete only, and they drone. They do a center muffler delete only, and they don't.
Every car and truck will be different, depending on the rest of the exhaust system. Personally, I would just add another smaller resonator in front of the muffler or since he has duals in front of it, 2 small ones further forward.
@@AdmiralRustyShackleford he had a truck. The drone in a car and suv will travel threw the trunk space. That's why they use resonators on gm suv in the rear but not on the pick ups. The drone passed the cab is not nearly as bad due to the bed space allowing it to escape. If his cats are gone then he needs the resonators in its place to reduce the cab drone. I only used my Audi as a small example. I own a performance shop and experience this often. I use resonators in the crossover pipes when I need to stop the drone in a ls pick up. 👍
@@handothemagnifico The newer Silverado uses a tailpipe resonator, as do the Hemi Rams, since they came out in 03 or whenever. Drone isn't just vibration it also comes from the exhaust frequency and volume so any resonator no matter where it's placed will change the sound.
I can appreciate what you're doing with the exhaust. I think is sounds great wide open. Keep the videos coming.
Love the vid LT, keep up the content. It's amusing to realize the things you want quieter on something you drive a lot as you get older.... Tires... stereo... exhaust...
By far my favorite project truck you've dreamed up. And I've been watching since power nation days
well thanks!
The system looks really good, and as far as I can tell it sounds really good as well!! You did an amazing job with it, the exhaust and the truck!
Sounds great and I fully understand the struggle. Going through the same with my 4.8 silverado.
Your not getting old! When I was 16 I wanted quite exhausts on my ls swapped blazer
I think it sounds wicked! The tailpipe definitely helps exaggerate the choppy idle. Love the sound
Great video LT! Looking forward to seeing the next installment!
That's the best ending i've seen in any of your videos. Totally relatable story, I am also becoming that old guy. I also like to imagine one of your neighbors watching you set up a tripod to record the engine revving in the middle of the street and having no idea what's going on.
I feel the same way about wanting a quieter exhaust. I must also be getting old as I just replaced my flowmaster super 10 di/do with a magnaflow di/do. Much more bearable. I just finished putting my bed back on my truck after cleaning and painting the frame, replacing a few bed supports and welding on new bed sides. As a Mainer, you'll understand the struggle we have with rust
Beautiful sounding exhaust.
Pure music.
I've run high volume exhaust systems for years & apparently I don't know what drone is.
All I've ever heard is the engine humming along.
Yours is pure beautiful engine music.
I had the same problem when I built my exhaust for my Honda. It was really hard to get all the drone out of it, and it is still a work in progress after about 5 revisions...oh well, it's fun to do the work anyway! Love the TIG welds everywhere. It's a skill I haven't had the chance to learn yet. Cheers!
I appreciate all the videos you make I learn alot n I always save em all so I can study by wat hing them all so thanks from Hawaii n a Happy New Year Aloha
Love all the exaust videos you do. Another great one in the books.
I had a 6.0 lq4 with a decent cam, Doug thorley tri-y headers, xpipe, 3" true dual exhaust, and dual Magnaflow 14 inch body mufflers with basic dumps before the axle. Swb single cab. Easily the best sounding exhaust I've heard personally.
I love the way it sounds even now with the resonator ! I’ve dealt with drone a lot on diesel trucks . I’m curious just for a test you could try. If you have a test piece try extending the end so it’s past all body parts . Nothing for it to echo off of or under .
A little extra sound is not bad. Happy New Year to you and your family LT. Look forward to what's coming ahead.
Totalflow makes some good affordable exhaust parts. Especially for way out here in Hawaii. I had picked one up for a close friend of mine, that now lives back in Utah, for his former '08 Ram3500 6.7 4x4 tow truck, cause the safety inspector wouldn't pass it without one. Love and enjoy your videos! Keep up the great work and have a safe and Happy New Year!🤘🏾🤙🏾
Sounds great!! I wish I had the patience to build my exhaust on my dually. I had a muffler shop do it and it really looks bad. One of these days after I finish the rear end 4-link upgrade I may just have to just give it a shot.
I'm 68 years old and love the way my 1998 5.2 Dodge Ram sounds. It has a single with a Cherry Bomb 3in outlet w/ a turn out in front of the right rear tire. Nice bark! I love loud exhaust.
I think it sounds GREAT. Happy New Year LT
Sounds great! Excellent work!
Sounds great! You’re not OCD! You just like clean, finished, factory look. The car show guys do that too.
The exhaust sounds very old school, like a flathead kinda. Happy new year LT thank you for all your content and knowledge sharing. I've learned a lot from you, thank you
Happy new year and thanks for watching!
Be proud of your dad and that you turned out just like him!
Awesome! I think it sounds better now. Looks slick with that slash cut too!
Man I wish I could weld like that! That exhaust is just rad. If you were gonna change mufflers, maybe look into some large Magnaflow style mufflers. They’re straight thru and are known to be on the quieter side with not much drone, plus very free flowing.
Nice work! Sounds excellent.
LT thanks for sharing your knowledge and your projects..
You bet
Those Pro Series mufflers are excellent! I run a dual 3 inch setup using a pair of those on my 427 Windsor powered 1985 Mustang LX. Over 35 years of owning the Mustang this is the quietest system I have had on the car. I also run the Flowmaster D flow mid pipe which is like a mix of an H and X flow setup. I run short tailpipes that exit at the rear of the tires but not to the bumper. Very quiet for 560 HP and no drone at all!
Love the progress on the projects
At 18 I was all about straight pipes and now at 30+ decent sound and being able to talk without yelling at each other in the cab has a value. I’ve found a muffler with a nice tone but mild in cab noise after many years of trying everything. I keep a Dynomax 17698, in my shop at all times. along with a few flowmaster S bend kits.
There is a longer case (17789) I use them on my tow vehicles, dump mine right in front of the the bumper similar to how this truck was done. I’ve found that way keeps it quiet inside like a tailpipe but much harder to ding and bend keeps the rear tire from beating up the pipe.
Sounds great bro! Excellent clean work too.
I will say that sounds pretty good. Love all the tig welding.
I hear ya on the sound levels. I like that I can hear other stuff to suss any "issues" with a milder sound. I am according to my kids, Old as
Sounds pretty good to me. Love your attention to details, would love to have your fab/welding skills man!
I've been looking for a '00 '01 Silverado regular bed regular cab for a long time now and I've finally got a good lead for a decent truck. This build series gives me hope. Now i need a welder cause I'm gonna want to get my exhaust perfect. Thanks for the good/bad influence. Now i need more tools money and time. Oh by the way my wife doesn't like you cause of these videos, gives me too many ideas. And ideas cost money as she says
If you used some exhaust wrap it can help with the exhaust resignating. Some other stuff you can do that will make a big improvement is to install some sound deadening mat on the interior of the truck. Do the floor. Doors, back of the cab and roof. That will make a HUGE DIFFERENCE!!! Then do a spray in bed liner. I recommend the Rhino Liner brand (like the actual Rhino Liner, not some knock off). The reason is because it is more of a rubbery material, rather than something that is really gritty and rough. It is also applied thicker. I used to work for a rhino Liner dealer and it is sprayed at 1/4" thick on the bed floor and 1/8" on the sides and tailgate. It does an amazing job at deadening the bed from vibrations and rattles. Nice job on the exhaust!
Great video as always. I really love all the LS stuff! I have an 04 2500 that I have some plans for. Thanks for sharing the link to Goat Rope garage! I've been wanting learn about tuning.
I'm with you LT.....I don't want to hear or feel the drone inside the cab, but still want that classic SBC sound. Cheers! Zip~
Exhaust sounds good LT. I understand being picky about exhaust. I’m always back and forth on if I wanna make changes to my system. I’ve been thinking about electric cutouts lately, but I don’t race it.
I’m the same way. Picky as heck with exhaust too. My favorite so far I did is the 2.5in x-pipe with single chambers to a side exit on my ranger. I’ll have to send you a video in an email or something. It sounds very different from most 302 mustangs I’ve heard. I know tailpipes make a huge difference in how the sound reverberates. Also, going from 3 up to 4 inch makes things drone more in my experience, even when going through a Y.
I think this thing sounds amazing on the video!! Making me consider resonators and Borla XR1's on my Silverado with my built 6.0!
It sounds good. I've got long tubes 3in to 4in and a flowmaster 60 series (rv muffler) on super charged small block
Watching your work I love the precision and attention to detail. Cleaning the inside of the pipe and deburing prior to welding is the way it should be. Since you left your previous “show” it has gone downhill big time. At least I can see your work here on yt. Thanks for sharing..
glad you enjoyed it! I try to be methodical as possible when it comes to fabrication
Does sound awesome! You have got me won over 👍
I think I’m going to run a dynomax ultraflow welded on my stroker project truck. I’m going to daily drive it so I don’t want anything to wild. I think it will still sound cool with 11:6 compression and a 225/232 cam. I like your set up because it doesn’t make that clap sound most trucks have!
I ran a pair of DYNOMAX UltraFlows on my CrownVic -- Straight-through power -- perfect pitch -- and NO DRONING at any steady speed. Wasted a ton of money on Flowmasters -- NEVER AGAIN !!
I'm with you, when I was younger open headers was fine with me. Now a complete exhaust it's to loud and drones like crazy.
We get a full 24 min of watching you build stuff now instead of 8 on the tv shows. 🤗😎 Much better on YT! Hope you’re doing well, look forward to an end of year wrap up. 😎
It will be a lot quieter once you fit the silencer(the turbocharged) but it sounds good , keep the video coming
I bought a nice 9.5 gm 14 bolt for my 1500 05 sierra has 4.10s and g80 but I'm planning on doing 6 lug shafts from dutchmen co. And a true Trac can't wait for 4.10s especially as I plan to put larger tires. North Maine Steve good videos show off those welds u do you are talented Maine raises smart dudes sure u learnt a lot growing up in Maine no fun without an engine up here
Sounds good LT 👍
Simply put ,love it
Truck sounds great!
And I bought my gmt800 tahoe and it has a muffler dump out under the passenger rear door and the drone is just annoying. It's not even real loud either, but I do a lot of highway driving.
Anyway great exhaust video! Learned a couple things too.
I used a resonator from a 3.5 ecoboost on my off road only 🙂 First Gen Ford Raptor. It made a huge difference.
This Jorge Garcia I think you did good job on that exhaust it sounds rich quite I like watching you video s thank you Jorge Garcia Dallas Texas
Sounds great 👍 The only way I've found to eliminate drone whilst maintaining the volume is to fit J pipes though.
Had a similar situation on my fbody. Resonator and different muffler helped but still droned a bit. Added sound deadening material inside the car and it made it much quieter not only from the exhaust but road noise and vibrations as well.
I'll have to add some to this truck for sure.
‘72 C10 454 Hooker Super Comp long tube headers 3” collectors --> 3” Dr Gas X-Pipe with 2-1/2” exits --> Flowmaster Delta 40’s --> 2-1/2” tailpipes straight out the back..... In my opinion, and many others, this is the best sounding truck in the great state of Texas! If you’re behind it at WOT I’ve been told it’s ear piercing loud, many Fox body guys have told me that because that’s where they end up at the hit of the throttle.....😂😂😂
smartest comment here
My cammed 4.8 Silverado with a magnaflow muffler was very raspy at certain rpm. I put a dynomax race bullet muffler ($25 at summit)just in front of the magnaflow and it took all the loud raspyness out of it. Found that on a forum and was surprised at how good it worked
Sounds good I like it I’d keep it as it is. But I do enjoy how you make your exhausted ,the time you put in to make it right. I wish you could build one for my truck.
Agreed I had to add a resonator to my truck
Pretty much the same exhaust you have.
Nice! haha Yeah my dad says if it's too lout you're too old. But there's a big difference between loud and sounding good vs take two Advil. The Spintech 6000 I have is right under the backseat (being a quad cab) haven't tried to see if theres a big difference with the seat up or down. All I know is if I'm in heavy traffic going slow 10-15% throttle it drones... from like ~1,100rpm. If it does start to drone I just tip in a tiny bit and the drone shuts up lol Stock manifolds, cats into a Y 2.5" single side exit into a Y split tip slant cut 4"x19" between the back of the cab and the rear tire.
Sounds gnarly 👌 and lol at the end "needs a trutrac" i was literally thinking that and you said it 🤣
yeah, i was knda bummed when the ol G80 decided to unlock
I'm with you man.. My procharged 427 sbc is cool for about ten minutes, than it's no fun.. Put a quiet system on with a boost activated set of cutouts.. mellow when I want it and loud when it needs to be.
That truck does sound really good!
Sounds really nice, and I'm a 58 year old teenager so of course it does. When I bought my 98 Sierra it had a catback exhaust that droned at around 1800 rpm start,I didn't mind too much but unfortunately while driving with my wife and kids I couldn't quite make out what they were saying, not such a bad thing.lol
Sounds awesome. I’m getting the same way. I want a nice tone and not harsh. Is what it is ha. Nice work
Sounds great good job
That sounds awesome!
You really are good at exhaust fab! Maybe that guy from Magnaflow that was always on the TV shows doing custom stuff can hire you haha
Axle dumps drone like crazy. I finally did an over axle and tail pipe on my truck as well.
I have dual glasspacks into a Y with a 4" diamand eye tailpipe on my '97 Vortec 350. It was way too loud, so I put a baffle in the tailpipe (like the ones they used to put in compact car mufflers). It still has the same exhaust tone, but probably reduced it by over 3db.
Always sucks when you have to change exhausts that soon after setting one up, but I'd be lying if I said I hadn't had to do it myself.
I don’t do anything fancy because I like to change it up a lot however I like my setup now I have Blackwidow venom 250s which are pretty quite for cruising and I have cutouts for when I wanna be loud
@@yamahaguy1732 I've considered some black widows. What vehicle/motor is yours on.
I feel the getting old thing. I used to do headers and single chambers into turndowns on everything. I had guys telling me what setup to run on my 5.4 f150 but they all sounded like trash. Muffler delete on stock exhaust is perfect. Good cold start, decent idle, quiet cruising then about 1900rpm up it barks well enough. And it's cheap to do.
It sounds wicked!
Utah for sure!! Cant miss that drive on the back part of the lake!!
I had a flow master on my Tahoe and I had the same problem with drone and something else was the amount of heat coming from the muffler so I decided to go with a borla xr1 race muffler not only did it reduce the amount of heat but I no longer have a drone problem and it sounds really good I actually like it better than the flow master !!!!!
As always, awesome content. A couple of things I could suggest. 1) Dynomax UltraFlow Round muffler, 22" long, in 4". About 85 bucks at Summit, nice deep sound. I enjoy it. You are like me though, and have a preference on sound. 2) Yes, a Helmholtz resonator will kill the drone. You should need one about 22" long. 3) Take a minute to research that shock relocation thing. They are on opposite sides to minimize axle wrap. When you go turbo on that truck, you'll need all the help you can get, unless you plan on CalTrac's or something similar.
Thanks for posting, and keep the content coming. I'm enjoying it.
Are you talking about traction bars?
Aaron, cal-tracs are far superior to traction bars. In addition to stopping the a pe twist, the twisting motion is converted into downward motion with caltracs. Therefore planting the tires and preventing axle wrap
The truck sounds beautiful
The best way to keep your mufflers and get rid of annoying drone is J- pip. Really good vids on CZcams on the subject. Length of pipe is everything.
Watching your video wearing my Tolman Performance hoodie... Keep making the great content... Thanks
Thanks! Will do! and thanks for supporting the brand!
Sounds amazing LT
Sounds very good!!
Tailpipes make a huge difference. I once cut the mufflers off of my car so it was straight piped ending in the middle of the car. Got tired of it and added tailpipes going straight out the back still without mufflers. It did wonders but the car was still droney so I added hellcat mid-mufflers/resonators and it sounds pretty good. My car came with a factory x-pipe and has some drone at around the same rpm. I’ve driven the same car with an H-pipe conversion and it sounded way better. Also I’ve noticed that large diameter exhausts are harder to quiet down.
Vibrant ultra quiet resonators are awesome. It made my 350z sound like a normal car, not a trumpet.
Nice fab skills! The exhaust looks badass, and sounds fantastic. I am with you though on the excessive interior noise. I have the opposite issue however. It is loud in the cab while accelerating, and cruising at a steady speed, it's quiet. 2014 F150 STX 5.0. I ordered a premade Dynomax single three inch stainless exhaust with an Ultra Flo welded muffler. The entire resonator was missing from the kit, and that was how it was supposed to attach to the original cat pipes. I took it to an exhaust shop, since the WHOLE idea was bolt on and I could install it in the driveway and weld it up. For a resonator, he spliced a stainless steel glasspack in, then ran the extra provided pipes back to the muffler. The tailpipe fit like a glove and hit the hangers dead on. But the weird part is that cruising at ANY speed you hear almost nothing, but accelerating even softly produces a loud throbbing pulsing bombombombom sound. I am pretty sure I will get used to it after a while, but I saw where a guy soaked some header wrap and wrapped his muffler with it, which seemed to help.
Really like the content of these videos. Been watching this series to get some motivation for my GMT400 build. Haven’t decided if I want to keep the 350 or do a LM7 5.3 swap or go with the the LQ4/LQ9 and throw a cam and lifter upgrade like I saw on Engine Power.
Don't bother with a 5.3 if your trying to keep up with newer 10 speed trucks in a race is my piece of advice but if it's your own fun cruiser a 5.3 is a much better option than the 350 if mpg's are a concern. If you have a 350 vortec it would be cool to throw a 212/218 summit pro SBC cam in with a newer ls style computer swap and you would be off too the races you really can't go wrong with any option honestly
@@chrishansen7004 I’m not building a race truck. My truck is a 4wd and plan on swapping out the 4L60 with either NV3500 or a NV4500/5600 with a Atlas type TCase. I like the idea of keeping my 350 and turning into a 383/400 but I can get a crate LS for less money.
Depending on the space you have available, a parallel helmholtz exhaust resonator tube is more effective at eliminating drone than a pass through type resonator.
What is a parallel helmholtz exhaust resonator tube. Just quick description. Thank you
@@davidterceira7451 you could've typed it into Google instead of that comment homie ngl
@@davidterceira7451 a helmholtz resonator is a tube that branches off from the main exhaust pipe. Its capped on one end and basically reflects the sound waves back into the exhaust and cancels out the target sound frequency. You generally measure the frequency you want to eliminate and then add an appropriate length helmholtz resonator. There is a more precise formula to calculate the appropriate length. Although by my quick research, generally, the larger the helmholtz resonator, the larger the range of sound frequencies it will cancel out. Best part about these resonators is that they do not introduce any sort of flow resistance. If you want to see what they look like, search most civic type r exhaust systems. Most of them seem to use helmholtz
Totally 👍 Helmholtz is the best! Ran 3 inch x 42.5 inches with a 3 inch 90 degree elbow and capped towards rear to eliminate 93 Hz drone. This was for a Ram Ecodiesel 👍👍
its always fun to discover a local content creator
I'm right there with you on exhaust system function, quality of sound and appearance, LT. Kudos for spending so much energy and time on yours. Question - have you considered adding a helmholtz resonator? They were factory installed on a few late 60's Pontiac muscle cars and are supposedly very effective at controlling highway drone and noise.
Best regards, Lloyd in TX EDIT: After listening to your entire video you mentioned possibly adding the helmholtz "J=pipe" resonator.
I'm getting the same way with exhaust. I have a 97 Comp T/A I've owned since 06. I installed LT Headers/Off Road Y-Pipe with a resonator to pre axle dump as my exhaust setup. I have the car up on jack stands as I have the motor out (Going 396 CI) I'm redesigning the exhaust system with a E-Cut out so I have have a nice tone while cruising but can also be annoyingly loud if the mood strikes me.
Sounds awesome!!!
Sounds nice LT, mad welding skills 👍👍👍
Thanks 👍
@@LawrenceTolman lucky me I get to replace the heater core on my 81 Z28 next. Will be adding a Tremec TKX 5 speed, March Performance serpentine system, and a rear disc conversion !
