  • This video documents Section 1 of Alabama’s Pinhoti Trail. It’s approximately 21 miles of mixed terrains with some great views, a good camp sight or two, and a taste of rural, small town life. I tried to show the twists and turn of the trail to give those planning a hike a better idea of what’s ahead.
    There’s also several gear recommendations for a female solo overnight hiker, including makeup products for a backpacker!

    Awesome! I'm starting the trail next week and this video was informative and motivational. The umbrella was a great tip; I added one in my pack. Also, makeup equals war paint. I hope to see more sections of the Pinhoti Trail on your channel.

    I got to say the final comments “Cold Coke and bag of chips” absolutely priceless. From Indiana here and have been looking at doing some hiking camps and happen to come across this video glad I watched till the end that made my burst out with laughter.

    Hey Kristen, glad I found your channel. I just did videos of these sections (Flagg to Rebecca Mountains). It’s great to reflect through your video. Thanks for sharing with us.

    I got turned around myself in the Talladega National Forrest. Used my compass to get back on track. Great video

    Great video, Kristen! I got off trail and lost on that fire road too. If you aren't looking, you will walk right past the blue blaze where the trail goes back to the right. 😁 I turned 18 miles into 21 miles. 🤔

    Yay! So glad you’re doing this! Let me know when you do other sections, if you’d like some company. I had big plans for section hiking most of the AL part this fall, but it hasn’t really happened like I’d hoped.

    Great video. I’m planning on doing that hike soon. Thanks for all the tips and also for pronouncing everything right! It drives me crazy with people saying We-O-gufka!

    At 12 minutes into your video you got lost due to trail/direction confusion. Thats typical on the Pinhoti. I've hiked several times from High Point Trailhead to Bulls Gap Trailhead. The trail tends to have great trail blazing in the straight sections. However, when you get to a place where the trail makes a turn or bend, there is rarely markings to denote that turn. I've gotten lost many times on the Pinhoti due to this. Many times I've threatened to carry a can of blue paint and a paint brush but havent done it yet. As a service to people that will come after me, however, I always stack rocks to create a "Karn" to indicate the direction of the trail at the turn. Often times I return to the same place and see that my Kern is still there. Happy hiking!

    I watched your video last year and our family hiked part of this section. This and other videos inspired us to start hiking again. I have decided I want to hike the entire Pinhoti, even if I have to do it in sections. NOTE: I love your hand-written guide with landmarks and the mileage of each section. Could you share a good place to get that information so I can make my own?

      I used the Pinhoti Alliance website and FarOut app as well as comments on the Pinhoti FB page. But I actually have an Etsy shop where you can get a digital download of these cards. All 13 AL sections are just $5. Instant download. My shop is RubyNellHikes. 😬

      Alabama during early September is a bug’s paradise. I made it through without too many bites using picardin treatments on my equipment.

    What kind of pack are you using? It looks like a good size for hiking or backpacking.

    • @kristencreatesllc
      @kristencreatesllc  Před 2 lety

      It’s a Gregory Maven 44. But it’s a XS (because I have a super short torso) so it’s actually about 42 liters. It’s PERFECT for 1-3 nights. Honestly probably good for longer, maybe even thru hiking, if you’re smart about your load. I downsized specifically to control my weight and am super happy with it.

      @@kristencreatesllc Thank you. I'm actually looking for just a hiking backpack, with room for tent, etc. in case I do an overnight backpack trip. New to this and don't want to buy multiple packs until I get a little more experienced.
      Looking forward to videos when you hike more sections of the Pinhoti!!

    About how much did your pack weigh?

    • @kristencreatesllc
      @kristencreatesllc  Před 2 lety +2

      I’m not sure of the base weight, but with water and food it was somewhere between 22 and 25 pounds. And the wine was by far my heaviest item. No regrets.
