- The Arrowhead Loop Trail is a 6.1 mile moderately trafficked loop trail in Monte Sano State Park, near Huntsville, Alabama. This is a moderate difficulty trail due to length and a steep up-hill section a little over halfway through. I’m hiking the loop in a counter-clockwise direction today starting at the parking lot off of Monte Sano Blvd just across from the entrance to the Burritt on the Mountain Museum. Most of the trail can be described as a lovely walk in the woods with with some interesting rock formations. Two highlights of this trail are a natural spring that has been damned into a cistern and the Natural Well which is a 185 ft deep vertical cave shaft that is open at the top surrounded by a fence so it is a little more challenging to fall in.
I had a beautiful day for a solo hike. The temperatures were warm and the skies mostly clear. It had rained hard a couple of days before, so there were quite a few muddy spots along the way. I stopped for lunch at a natural spring that fills a historic cistern providing a beautiful setting for relaxation. The big attraction on this hike though is probably the Natural Well. It is a huge vertical shaft, about 185 ft deep, with about 1000 ft of horizontal passages beyond that (for those brave enough to descend). I had the entrance to myself while I was there and spent quite a bit of time looking it over, but I'm not crazy enough to repel into it.

Dude I didn't even know this existed! Thank you so much for showing me this. I moved here from Sacramento California and have been looking for good places to hike. I've found a few good places but nothing quite like this. Any other suggestions would be AMAZING! Now I just need to make some friends out here to go hiking with sometimes lol. Alone is fine but it's always fun with a friend.
Glad you enjoyed it! The Stone Cuts on Monte Sano are also very interesting. A more dramatic, and more difficult option would be the Walls of Jericho. I haven't done a video on that yet, but it's on my todo list. Pretty much anything in the Sipsey Wilderness is amazing. See my videos on that such as czcams.com/video/1yfQjfG0LBc/video.html.
Dude I live in south alabama near gulf shores Elberta/foley and after seeing this I plan on moving to north Alabama in a year or two.i hate the beach but I love the mountains and I didn't know Alabama had some really cool shit until now. 👍 On the video and please make more

Cool!

Awesome video thank you for sharing 🙏🏼👏🏼
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thank you for this video. We will be taking this hike tomorrow
Great! Hope you enjoy it.
Have you ever hiked at Little River Canyon. I kayak it all the time and made a trail down to one of the largest rapids, "Humpty Dumpty", the largest rapid on the Upper II, the park service named it the lower II, oh well. The hike starts at Canyon View Overlook, and eventually ends up at the rapid, approximately 100 yds upstream. It too is very scenic in the winter when the tree are bare. At the rapid is a large rock "sunbathers rock", which is good place for lunch. There are shite blazes marking the trail. From Humpty Dumpty you can follow he red trail farther upstream and up the side of the canyon where it intersects with my yellow trail. Go right for an easy walk out, if you go left it takes you back to the white blazes you follow on the way in. While you are over there, check out "Cherokee Rock City". Cherokee County has made major improvements to this county park, tent camping to RV sites. Bathrooms and showers, ery exciting place to explore. My scouts love coming here and the canyon for swimming in the summer.
I haven't hiked the Little River Canyon, but it is on my to do list. Thanks very much for the suggestion. Cherokee City is also on my list as I've never been there either. Glad to hear about the improvements. Thanks for watching and commenting! 👍
I camped there and never knew this trail was there. Well guess I just have to go back😅
You will! Also check out The Stone Cuts. 👍
So cool
Glad you liked it!
Great video

Hey! I got behind on comments and just read this now. Sorry. Maybe next time!
Where can I get the map that you show at at 0:20 mark? The Monte Sano Park website links a map with a significantly smaller area, so that parts of your route aren’t included.
Yeah, the official State Park Map has shrunk in recent years. The map I'm showing is a combined map of the state park, Land Trust, and Burritt On the Mountain, which is nice. But it is a little outdated (2009) and has a few errors on it, but it works. I found it here: app.box.com/s/mhm5k7jhxzf4ggjjl1g8w8806ikeh8oz
Once more a wonderful trail video. Gives me hometown feelings.
Could be also a trail here at the Swabian Alb. Here my favorite cave:

Wish you a sunny springtime!

Thank you! The mountains here are full of caves. I'm not into spelunking myself (a little scared of small places), but I have gone several km into a few caves in the past and I am fascinated by them. This cave is near us as well and though it is a show cave, it is very nice: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cathedral_Caverns_State_Park
That right there is a rock-dropping hole
It is indeed! And I'm sure many a rock have been dropped down it.
@@SoutheasternFrontiers That's how I wound up here. Not sure how I got to the rock-dropping vids in the first place, though.
Ha! 👍🏼
That spring may have been a still during prohibition
It would have been a good source of clean water.
Came from an 11-year old video and im surprised the small tree at the mouth of the cave is still there. O:
Yeah. It's tenacious!
@@SoutheasternFrontiers Do you by any chance know what kind of tree it is?? Its width hasn't changed at all so it caught me off guard. But if youre not sure either, its all good. :) Thank you.
No I'm not sure. Sorry.
@@SoutheasternFrontiers Its all good. Thank you :)
Yikes, not much of a fence around that deep hole.
Nope! Not at all. Be VERY careful around the edge! 👍
