      #askgmbntech Hello Doddy, My names Yusuf and I'm a beginner and absolutely know nothing about mountain bike trails or anything from the looks of your video. I wanted to buy my first full suspension mountain bike and I wanted to know what would be a good start off bike to ride a few trails but also on the road. If you could also suggest where I can get it from that would be very helpful. Thanks

      GMBN Tech #askgmbntech Hello Doddy, just picked up some new Santa Cruz Carbon wheels. Put on my lightly used DHF tan walls. I have not put sealant in yet as it’s winter and will not be able to ride for several months. I’m assuming the sealant will dry up in warm storage thus no sealant yet. Rear tire continues to gradually go flat. Is this a problem?

      @@jonaskinner5273 i will be honest, ive never owner carbon bikes. I guess if i had the choise, i would still always go with alloy. Carbon is a nice material when done right, and as an engineer myself i know how easy and relatively cheap carbon can be made aa well as how difficult and expensive a "real" carbon frame can be, that being said i dont trust 90% of all carbon stuff out there. Why do you think brands like Santa Cruz, Yeti, Canyon offer the same frame in different carbon variants for different prices? Yeah, one of them is the "bullshit carbon" that isnt half as stiff as alloy and barely any lighter...but still more expensive...i dont trust that stuff..if i ever buy a carbon bike it will be a carbon done right...which hardly ever comes for less than 9 or 10 grand..

Removed the spacers and the crank hasn't come loose ever since.

    There are many mtb accidents due to broken carbon frame during extreme bike riding. Some mountain bike riders said that carbon frame from Ch1n@ are easily broken due to the low quality of the frame. And some say that there are many types or grades of carbon frame in the market. If you buy the cheap one means the lower the quality and durability of the frame. Can you explain about the grades of a mountain bike frame and the durability according to each grade?

    They normally do travel differences for frame clearance. A 29inch wheel being larger in diameter will sit closer to the frame than a 27.5. With the exception of some forks like the Zebb which has a higher mounting point on the 27.5 wheel fork than it's 29inch brother.

It will most likely bend. But its still unusable. Even when you got a dent in your frame its better to play safe and get a new one.

Do you buy dirt jump frame and seperate fork or are there any trials type of bikes, that came with frame and fork together? Asking because i do not want an reak trials bike, i do not like the look of those.
    And second - How do you tell the differences in tool hardness and stifness? Like with steel tools - How do you tell which is hardened, which is more durable and so on by colour or what? Asking because there are good bargains on good tools, but a lot of them say that they're made from metal...like what sort of metal? Thank you!

      Agreed. I've been on an Alu for ages and i have no problems keeping up with / passing high-end carbon bikes in XC!

    • @newttella1043
      @newttella1043 Pƙed 5 lety

      There are lots of lower grade carbons too. They are more affordable but barely lighter than aluminum. Aluminum is still the better bargain.

    • @TFritz82
      @TFritz82 Pƙed 5 lety +2

      I also find that depending on manufacturer, the difference in weight between their 'low end' carbon offering and high end aluminum build is very little - not enough to get bent out of shape over nearly a grand! The price difference stretches much further with the higher end carbon layup builds! IE Yeti standard carbon vs Turq and Santa Cruz C vs CC.

    #askgmbntech Hi, after a few years of using my “standard” hardtail to commute and on some trails, it’s time for it to be upgraded with some disk brakes and a decent groupset. Maybe a dumb question but how to convert a rear QR slot on the frame with a thru axle?

  • @2001MBKBooster
    @2001MBKBooster Pƙed 5 lety +1

    I love the feel of my aluminium hardtail but for my next bike I'm looking at a different frame material - titanium.
    But if I had to pick today between aluminium and carbon fibre for my next mountain bike, I would stick with aluminium. Better bang for the buck in most cases.

    • @newttella1043
      @newttella1043 Pƙed 5 lety

      Only problem with bikes is that they get obsolete. I regret buying a Moots titanium bike 12 years ago. It was crazy expensive now it's so outdated with unfashionable xc geometry, non tapered head tube, 26" wheels, quick release axles etc etc. Even my kids don't want it. Aluminum bike with high end parts is easier to sell after 2 or 3 years when you want something newer.

      I'm no Doddy but i have the same problem. Have to add pressure every two weeks now. Oil has started showing on the stanchion. From what I've read the hilo doesn't have the greatest reliability. I'm thinking of changing the seal kit again (done that once a year ago), but I'm looking at replacing the whole unit if the problem crops up again. Not worth keeping in my opinion.

      I have 2 bikes with hilo droppers, they both did this to me after install... check the cable first and make sure it's not too tight. It has a barrel adjuster on the lever. Try to loosen it a bit. Been using one for more than a year and the other for 6 months. No problems since.

    #askgmbntech Last Christmas I was given the promise of a new bike of my choosing. I live in the northern parts of Sweden and temperatures regularly drop beneath -20°C, and I love to be able to ride in the snow. I'm currently borrowing a 2015 Fuji Wendigo (on 26x4.7 Vee Bulldozers) fatbike for the first time and I must say that I'm loving it even though it's a 17.5 frame and I need a 21.5er. Either way, no matter where I look I always seem to come back to the 2019 Trek Farley 5, a 27.5x4.5 fatbike. The thing is, I doubt I want to run a fully rigid fatbike in the summer. I've seen a lot of people talk about changing to 29+ wheels, both with and without adding a suspension fork, during the summer. Not only do they fit, but it won't "compromise the geometry". Now, finally to my question. Do you think that changing to 29+ tires on a fatbike is a good idea, and what does the aforementioned quote mean?
    Also, from what I've read, it's not worth bothering with a suspension fork when it gets this cold, would you agree with that?
    A little sidenote, I currently own a Merida Maroon Matts. I mostly do urban mountainbiking and commuting, but I'm getting into trail riding more and more. I should note that rolling resistance is not my biggest concern. The way I see it, it's just more calories being burnt and I really need to loose a few extra kilos, gone from 99 to 86kg last year, I still have ways to go.
    Also, excuse the mile long question. It's my first time doing this.

    • @benkemp6546
      @benkemp6546 Pƙed 5 lety

      I had the same problem with my GX derailleur. On the main pivot bolt where the derailleur bolts onto the frame, there is a spring behind the b-tension collar which needs to be held back with a circlip that sits in a groove on the bolt. On mine, the circlip had popped out meaning that the bolt bottomed out before it was tight. It can be a bit fiddly to get the circlip back in, but if you use a flat bladed screwdriver and a bit of patience you should get it!

      Adding an extra 20mm to the front will slacken out the head angle a little bit and slightly raise the BB. We suggest you check with the bike manufacturer to see what the maximum axle to crown measurement is that they recommend.
