- esports ready! The new Counter-Strike Map Anubis was played in pro CSGO during the Blast Premiere World Final 2022, does Anubis work as a professional Counter-Strike map?
You can learn how to play Anubis by watching pro CS:GO players, so we can learn if Anubis should have replaced Dust2 in the map pool.

I would really enjoy seeing more pro-game analysis from War Owl. Your insight into the game is analytical without being preachy, a rarity in a lot of game analysis circles. In any case, keep up the good work. This comment also has no closer.
that's probably because I write scripts and edit them! When I'm just speaking off the top of my head I can be an awful elitist CS:GO nerd as well.
@@TheWarOwl i love to remeber and rewatch you analysis from the liquid astralis vertigo game
He used to upload game analysis back in the day but stopped doing it for some reason
Agreed, like this style. Also suggestion style videos like balancing buffs/nerfs/reworks
Same
my conclusion: has potential but needs some work, I don't like the unintuitive angles and some superfluous geometry, pros clearly haven't learned it well enough yet, I like the two mids and the basic layout but A is too close to mid for a CT rotate. Let me know what YOU think I'm open to changing my mind if you have a better argument.
Cope and seethe
I feel the geometry part. No matter where you are on the map there are 15 different rocks and things that you can stand on top of which you don’t see in other maps.
@@Malsunk L + Ratio
I'm just glad the meta in this video wasn't negev negev negev
Why is mid being close to A a bad thing? I like the shakeup from the standard 2-1-2 default
That smoke falling through the floor and "it's eSports ready" 🤣
If we already have stuff like Ancient and Vertigo, Anubis definitely deserves a spot in the major scene. I have always loved this map. It's functional, allowing for a good number of strats and gameplay tactics (like shotgun corners or awp holding)
I didnt expect a video about a map from u warowl, Im so happy, because I enjoy those, for example about Austria and Vertigo :)
yeah I remember making those! They seem to underperform on my channel, but it's January so it's a time to make a bunch of crazy stuff and see what works.
@@TheWarOwl Man, i have never played austria in my life, but watched the video multiple times, because it's so well made, btw I can't wait to see that new stuff that you're going to produce.
@@TheWarOwl That sounds great! throw shit at the wall, it'll stick on many of us, I promise! ok maybe let's rethink this analogy
I think the map has a lot of potential, but a lot of players aren't giving it a chance because its new. It's the same problem we had with Ancient, the map was great but nobody played it for months until they saw their friends or favorite pros playing it more often. The map needs US, the community, to play it and find what's wrong so Valve can (hopefully) fix the problems.
I'm honestly playing it a ton rn and absolutely did not w Ancient. Maybe that's just me but to me this map is much more enjoyable.
Idk about the play stats atm though.
Ancient is fucking terrible
ancient is not that great
ngl ancient was a pain because of lighting and angles. weird angles and very dark spots creates weird visuals with the custom skins. i never played it but i love Anubis
Ancient hate was undeserved, it's a pretty simple map so no idea why people are so worked up over it.
Anubis however is pretty meh, way too big with all these weird angles.
I ragged on Anubis so much but I have come to really love what it's trying to do to shake up how games play out. A couple of the most prominent innovations are:
1) Mid is split in half horizontally. There's a T-side mid and a CT-side mid, with the length broken up by being on opposing corners of the square in the middle of mid. Because mid can be peeked into from two angles each way, and peeked out of from two angles each way, it's a very dynamic position compared to other maps' mids, much more difficult to anchor and hold. That there are important rotates on each side of mid makes it a worthwhile place to fight despite the risk, and makes bailing out and sac'ing territory easier to compensate for the difficulty holding mid. Compare to other maps' mids, which are usually only peeked into/from at one angle, are super costly to retreat from, and are difficult to dislodge once someone has a foothold.
2) The planting zones at each bombsite has no peripheral cover, but instead has one large central cover where you plant on its perimeter. This makes it super obvious where bombs are planted for, but terrorists need to expose themselves to angles they typically don't physically occupy during a site take in order to adequately defend the bomb in a retake situation. It also makes smoke planting viable, where Ts opt to smoke off the perimeter, plant safe, and play retake on the back foot instead of trying to contest angles from rotates into site. But the CTs can respond with a smoke defuse...
3) The two mids intersecting is really sweet. The window at top mid gives Ts a fast but dangerous way to bail a mid take and instantly proceed to either site, meanwhile B site's dark leading into water gives CTs a dangerous flank if Ts get careless.
4) There's almost always a way around a long angle you don't want to contest. You can avoid mid on each side by rotating through spawn with a time penalty (granted, this isn't new) and can similarly avoid long angles on flank routes or even bombsite takes by taking a longer route that punishes with more passive peeking angles. Gone are the days where an awper can just lock down site for free against an eco or force.
5) multiple positions to peek/traverse areas that aren't meant as common combat spots, so that you don't instantly lose a battle based on positioning just for being slow or retaking- knock-on effect of encouraging fights over the objective to actually happen at the objective
6) no headglitches on site :)
As a D2 stan, I actually like Anubis more since playing it a bunch. It's really fun, a lot of room for creativity. The hitboxes around walls need to be tweaked for better nade lineups, but it's good.
I've noticed us plebs seem to like the map, but the pros and wannabees seem to hate it.
@@TheWarOwl lol I guess I'm just cursed to really enjoy maps that they hate ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
@@Padlock_Steve most pros wanted mirage removed wtf do you mean
@@TheWarOwl True. I dont get how they dont seem to be having issues with vertigo being vertigo. Well atleast enough to press the devs.
I used to be a D2 stan, but then they blocked off mid and now it's easily the worst map in the game, no fun allowed
1:40 "some psychopath smoke push", really caught me off guard with that one xD
I agree with all the points you made in the video. About Anubis and CSGO in general. It is a honor and a delight to have you as part of the community, thank you for everything you’ve done and are doing for each and every one of us to listen, learn and benefit!
Heroic was top team at this point in time (still is). What must be noted is that they were playing this game (and whole tournament) with stand in for their best player.
Also they were in Abu Dhabi, at the end of competetive season, practising the map was severely limited for bunch of the teams.
Also also one of the best plays of the tournament happened on Anubis with Degster 1v4 with exactly 4 bullets in his AWP :D
I thought it was faze
jabbi their best player? he is 4th best imo
@@primtve_dope9568 Jabbi was in this match. Stvan was out
Regardless of some geometrical rework required, anytime a new map is introduced, I love it. Part of it is due to the meta not being set, so you are on your own, making surprising (bad or amazing) plays and having some nice fun
Some things are better unseen, but this is perfection on its own.
The proximity of mid to A helps the mid CTs rotate, but also opens a super-fast mid to A for the Ts if they take control of it. Also, it's kind of compensated by "the other mid" (canals) fast route to B. I think it's a very well-balanced map that builds on the classic three lane map while providing some fresh and unique takes.
I feel like it would not take much to make Anubis a great map. The double mid is very interesting, amazing imo. I 100% want to see more pro play Anubis.
I appreciate your intro synced with the AWP shot. Nice.
Super interesting take. I'm not up to speed with the e-sports scene, since I didn't even watch the entire Rio Major, so watching this was great. Awesome video! Your channel is definitely continuously improving.
"Sorry that I showed you the face, I know it's all you can see now."
... I was legitimately JUST looking at the minimap thinking about the face. Peak WarOwl performance
amazing vid brutha, keep up the great work
i think map rotation after 2 major better, let the team develop and perfect their map pool for a year. giving teams that got their favorite map removed a longer chance to adapt
if not, its possible for a team get their best and second best map removed in a year
Honestly I love!!!! THIS MAP! People really need to stop being so stubborn and learn a new map, I'm so sick of playing the same maps for years and years.
StarCraft Brood War has new maps every ASL season (6 months) and its gameplay constraints are just as demanding. Why not CS:GO? Maps are intentionally based on some new exploration within the strict historical expectations for a good balance.
I adore your pfp Marco!
@@BryantVonMiller Oh thank you so much n//n 🐭🐁
@@marco_mouse But of course! Mouse sona's are some of the cutest!
And you're most welcome!

@@BryantVonMiller I'm glad you think so! Maybe we could play csgo sometime!
Hey WarOwl what happened to the map you were designing? Not heard any updates for a while :)
Now that I know that you started out with SC2, I'm starting to notice parts of your perspective that seem like they came from that. In StarCraft: Brood War there hasn't been a balance patch in like 20 years but the balance is kept in check via the mapping community. It looks like SC2 is heading down that road as well, with fewer and fewer balance updates every year.
I think that's a sign of a well-made game and a mature community when map adjustments are all that are needed to keep the game fresh, and the community is capable of making those maps.
Bro nice edit with the awp shot from Cadian with your intro name that was like art bro , smooth like butter
not gonna lie that anubis map was hype AF. i ended up playing it on faceit a couple days later and using some of the stuff i saw in teh match made it a really fun game.
I really enjoy the map and its chaos, seeing as the meta develops and changes is really fun and you can try doing crazy stuff like in the demo and sometimes it does work.
finally i was starting to miss you
thx for the new vid mate
This video makes me want more full-game commentary from you
Map has been growing on me. I personally really enjoy holding mid as a CT. Essentially having two mids is honestly something so fresh to the game and it feels so nice. I also kinda liked that besides mid windows theres nothing really wallbangable on the map, so the map is basically all solid and not made of paper like a lot of other maps
Happy New Year, WarOwl and all the best for 2023.
Love your content.
Your switch to YT only has made your videos even better. Love it!
1:32 if you look closely, you will find the image of two people resting upon each other with a seat attached to them.
Very good Mr Owl, I salute your use of imagery in the education of the masses.
Edit: I also realised that this was done with the Portal color scheme.
that intro awp sound synced perfectly to the clip is superb editing.
this is such a fun video! I really hope this sticks!
Very interesting explanation of how pro team works on a particular map - what are the most popular locations, smokes, pushes etc. I enjoyed it a lot and wish there were similar videos for standard maps (you made some analysis of pro team tactics, these were great to watch!).
Strong AYE for option for disabling the custom player skins... But we know it won't happen, because money.
As for adding a bit buggy map to pro match pool - I don't believe map would get a serious treatment if it wasn't played profesionally. Some janky period is expected, but at least there is a strong motivation to patch it.
Amigo? Amigo?
anubis is an incredible map, not too difficult and not too basic, its perfect
would love to see more esports oriented videos from you!

I would love to see a full pro map pool analysis on all the maps that have been added into csgo and where they started, what worked best, and what didnt. Like dust 2 with the t spawn mid doors change. How do those changes affect how pros played before and after update and what are the stats for this changes. Did the map become more t or ct sided, etc. and maybe some maps that you think valve could add and what its pros and cons are. We dont get much analysis videos, let alone ones that are entertaining. Keep up the fantastic work warowl! ❤️
it would be similar to the 3kphilips series of a maps "many changes" but his are more textures and appearance. you could go into the pro side of things with glitches or just lay out and how pros responded verbally and gameplay wise.
I like to see more raw CSGO coming out in this map because it is not so hardcore trained into muscle memory yet. Some new utility happening that gets shoutcasters and viewers exiting. Maybe some trimming of the map in some areas would be cool (like they did in Ancient) but overall seems nice. I woudlnt also mind to see mappool change after every major for example because its usually getting boring to see inferno-mirage-nuke all the time. Sometimes when I opened the stream, I had to be sure im watching game live because I had seen these 2 teams play this map 2 times already in past few weeks.
I am generally a bit nervous about playing new maps but I got invited by some nearbys the other day that were higher-ranked than me and ended up doing really well on the map despite the tough (for me) opponents, and quite enjoying it. The double mid doors make it a bit different to the usual fare as well. Yes, there are a few quirks but I expect they will get ironed out. It looks really nice as well, without knocking my FPS down to double figures.
Happy New Years Warowl!!
the intro awp shot lineup was so cool
Would a review of some of the top games of worlds be a good idea for new content? I think you are capable enough to analyze it. I personally don´t even play CSGO atm I just like the stories you tell in your videos and I didnt really have time to follow worlds and would be interested in it.
I've played this map only a couple of times but honestly it's felt pretty good so far. It seems like there are a lot of different ways to play, I've often seen players push A on CT side to try and take mid control that way, I was not aware of being able to hold A from mid though, that's a bit weird. I think the problem is that a lot of us, myself included, don't want to keep playing a map that we still need to learn because a few bad games on Anubis could result in losing our ranks that we've put so many hours into getting. I think once the pros have spent more time playing it and the meta has been established, more people will give it a chance.
This is such a well-made vid my man, take it easy it's only 5 days since new year!
This is up there as one of your best videos to date.
The fact that intro is timed nearly right at the awp shot in the clip
what a great video ! no need to be longer nor shorter !
I agree with you about the map rotation opinion and not touching the mecanics of cs.
I hope csgo will find a way to promote more wingman by changing the first facade mindset for cheaters playground ( with hostage map too ).
LOVE YA WORK WAROWL
Add an extra turn in the mid tunnel facing A on CT so you can’t see as much of it and get rid of some of the more rounded corners and I think it will be perfect.
I really like it when its about pro cs from you
I love these comontary videos! Please make more!
I think they should have a rotation map pool every year with Cache, Train, Cobble, and now D2 available
Perfect timing for an Anubis map review with Valorant's Lotus reveal.
I haven’t seen one of your videos since 2012! Glad you’re still doing good. Did you ever find closure?
Ngl i am enjoying the map its actually good after you learn the nade or smoke spots
Happy new year
My All-time favorite youtuber uploads a video, i watch it and like it, it's as simple as that
Appreciate the ffx soundtrack at the start
Your thoughts on map design are always very insightful and interesting.
Warowl has another upload nice!
Happen to love this map. This and Vertigo are my go-to
thank you, please do more pro analysis stuff
Ahhhh Season, thanks for mentioning it!
0:55 I was thinking "damn all I can think about is the face"
Then warowl says sorry for showing you the face xD
Warowl I have an idea for a video. csgo BUT.. when you get shot you are permanently tagged. Your move speed drops by like 75% for the rest of the game and you can barely jump. In real life if you get shot in the chest by an Ak you won’t be bhopping around the map like you can in cs.
Have it activate a second after getting shot. Often, the adrenaline of the situation doesn't let the person feel the position of getting shot. It all floods in a few moments after the shot.
Please do more pro casting! Those videos with the red bars were my favorites. This video felt a bit like that, but ugghh it ended so soon!
czcams.com/video/vX9AlGhiYc4/video.html
Great video!
I literally can't unsee the face the whole video on the minimap 😭
i think the reason that Anubis is looking stable gameplay wise in the pro scene is because its community made almost every map is but Anubis is the newest map and because of that they havent done huge changes to the map and Valve is more focused on gameplay for the casual players thats why Ancient and vertigo were trash without community feedback in the Pro scene
Speaking of which, when will a new de_amigo update video come out? I enjoyed watching those a lot
Anubis is one of my favorite maps. Always fun, fresh rounds.
I love you WarOwl, you have taught me everything i know
I just started playing again bc of CS 2 announcement. I like Anibus a lot bc it seems like visuals were a key focus. It's the prettiest looking map imo.
Ima be real with you, Violence Bird. I stopped playing CS:GO like 6 years ago and stopped watching pro games about 4 years ago. I have almost 0 interest in this game but I keep watching your videos on it because the content is so damn good. I love it. Keep doing you. ♥
Missed these. I like goofy warowl but I’m here for the WAROWL
Finally mr warowl upload video again
OMG first vid of 2023! Happy New Year
I ranked up from nova 2 to dmg since the map got added to the pool its super fun imo
Anubis is a fantastic map. The angles feel unintuitive - but they always do in new maps. I like that they feel different and that good angles end up being far out in the open - it's interesting, and may lead to new counterplay. Visibility is fantastic and overall the map is unquestionably more fun to watch than D2 has been in a very, very long time. Either way I think this was a step in the right direction for Valve, although I agree map pool changes should be regularly scheduled and more often.
Listening to all these callouts, after allready played the map in 2 operations...
Oh wow Happy New Year!
Now only I await Tuscan’s introduction to the pro scene
I will never unsee the eyes on the minimap staring at me ever again.
Love the FFX intro music!!
I love Anubis, great addition and I would love for it to gain more traction
great video👍
Im a mirage player... Mirage only. However its so cool to see pro players out side of there comfort zones, Ide like to say im good enough, but this is crazy, these guys are so adequate to the games mechanics that there using something they haven't been playing for 5 years straight as an advantage. If there's a regular skill gap then you have new players to extremely good players, this is like watching Pro player levels, you have pro players to gods, Its super interesting to watch really good players to not play perfect. In a way, you can see there decisions in real time, regardless of there knowledge. That is awesome.
Sometimes when matches are on d2 or mirage I turn off the stream and watch the next map instead. Anubis is definately a welcome addition, though as many others I thought it would be Tuscan or Cobblestone replacing Mirage, but this is a fine start too.
I wish valve did this more so we could see more unique gameplay in varying maps
It would be super fun to watch pros play a new map for the first time competitively (Onsiting it)
I dont even play cs go anymore but i still enjoy the videos to stay updated :D
almost always some great ideas in WO videos.
totally agree about map rotation from season to season
almost every volvo's attempts to change meta with weapons breaks the game
anubis is great additon
Changing the map pool is also a great way to level the pros out slightly. Since they can't really get super comfortable on a map if you change them up a bunch
One of the things that I have noticed about Anubis that makes it drastically different from other cs maps is that it feels round. All of the other maps are built out of rectangles and feel very squared off, that’s what makes tuns stairs feel so weird. I cant explain what makes this map feel so much more round, but I believe it is the primary cause of it not feeling like a traditional cs map in the same way the other maps feel, regardless of their age
WarOwl pro analysis = the best analysis
This vide has to be enjoyed with a glass of red wine and a bowl of crisps.
YAY happy new year
1:02 made me laugh a lot, what a mind reader haha
