    Haunted Mansion could have been called Matricide Mansion. Constance, and three of the scrapped changing portraits all had a wife killing a husband.

    • @Karalora
      @Karalora Před 5 lety +16

      I think you mean mariticide (killing one's spouse), not matricide (killing one's mother). Easy mistake to make, since the words are so similar and mariticide isn't recognized by spellcheck.

    I think the reason why that farm one wasn't used because it would reminded people of the Dust Bowl, and that time there would be people with fresh memories of it.

      92JazzQueen My thoughts exactly. Especially considering most Okies wound up in California, so MANY older Cali residents visiting the opening of the ride would have actually lived through it, originally having moved there because of it.

      the Dust Bowl?

    • @jade_ottsel
      @jade_ottsel Před 5 lety +4

      A period of dust storms that further ruined the American prairies' ecology and agriculture back in the 1930's. It happened during a time of drought, and caused a lot of people to abandon their now ruined farmland, and migrate elsewhere in the U.S., some to the next city over, some to the next county, and some, at the most, to different states, as far west as California and so on.

    Their eyes no longer follow you. When the Sinister 11 portraits were relocated from the Portrait Hall to the Loading Area in 2007, their hollow eyes were replaced with flat eyes because the Imagineers didn't want guests to get distracted while they were waiting in line. Their stares are still creepy, but they no longer follow, which is a bummer.

    Especially because his face doesn't change when he catches on fire. Like bursting into flames isn't even the worst thing that's happened to him that day (of course, the last one shows that it really wasn't...).

    If I am not mistaken, you may have missed a few more abandoned changing portraits. There was the Sea Swallowed Captain (my guess a reference to the ride's original story line) who is standing before the wrecked remains of his whaling ship.
    A similar nautical-themed portrait is much closer to the one we have today, but when it transforms, you see the ghosts of the captain and crew emanating from the skeletal ship; my guess is that it is a reference to the Flying Dutchman.
    I've heard rumors that there was a portrait of the Pied Piper of Hamelin planned for the mansion, since his story is a Grim Fairy Tale. I usually chalked up the Arsenist as the Piper because of this

  • @badatgaming
    @badatgaming Před 5 lety +4

    A lot of these don't seem too bad now, but in the 60s I'm sure it would've been a big deal.
    Honestly most of them are good. The Witch with a goat's head would've been pretty dark and spooky even for today's crowd I think. A good number of these I feel would have worked okay with the current lightning change style we have, but there's definitely a few that would have probably only been good on the slow transitional style. Farm, Fruit, Werewolf/Arsonist, Rotting Fruit....those ones I don't think would have looked as good. Also Jack The Ripper looks like a human Hatbox Ghost. Skeletal Bride would have been cool until we got Constance, and I feel it would have worked in Phantom Manor.
    The Heiress and Loving Couple seem to smack of Constance and her....unique way of dealing with her husbands. Both would have worked well with the lightning flash.
    Rasputin is just kinda creepy in general. He was a creepy man. He was also Russia's Greatest Love Machine, but thats another story for another time. The eyeball effect wouldn't have really worked with the lightning flash that we have, it would've only worked with that slow transitional style IMO.

    Do a video about how the Haunted Mansion is mysteriously two mansions in one. I'm talking about how the building you enter is a three-story white antebellum manor in pristine condition (or a three-story brick Dutch Gothic Revival manor at WDW) and then during the attraction, after the stretching room, it somehow becomes a seemingly two-story run-down Victorian house with a conservatory and an attic on the second floor. Completely different architecture. You first see a glimpse of this alternate mansion in the stretching room when the lights go out. Notice the cupola the Ghost Host hanged himself in is octagonal and has four windows, while the cupola you saw outside is hexagonal with six windows (at Disneyland). My theory is that the mansion you ride thru during the actual ride exists in another dimension: the Spirit World. Remember the sign that used to be at the end of the ride: "DEAD END! Prepare to Exit to the Living World."

    The werewolf portrait now is supposed to be a representation of the Pied Piper. He's holding a sack because in the original story, he kidnapped the village's children after the village didn't pay him for ridding the streets of rats with his pipe. So I guess he got a bit salty because he shoved all the kids in the sack. Also "The Couple" is actually supposed to be of Lizzie Borden's parents now.

    A more interesting question might be, "What changing portraits would you like to see, even if they have never been considered before?" A number could come from fairy tales, many of which are quite dark. The easiest -- too easy, in fact -- would be the wicked queen / witch from Snow White. The Pied Piper is the one I'd really like, though -- but that is probably TOO dark for Disney.

    I haven't been to Disney world a ton (at least not as much as some people), but I do think I know it pretty well (I have a minor obsession). However I can't remember for the life of me where the portraits that follow you with their eyes are. Could someone let me know?

    Oh! The one where the portrait changes to show the woman stabbing the man in the heart? They couldn't use it because they didn't want to pay me anything for my life story rights.

    What is the actual mechanism behind the changing portrait? It's not just a screen, is it?

      Yup. Nowadays it is. If you try to film them, you'll break the illusion as the fps of the screens are extremely unlikely to match the ones on your camera (they're much slower).

      DBS do you know what the original effect was? They didn’t exactly have LCD screens at the time.
