    It’s heartwarming to see a reviewer, who appreciates bluff and diplomacy in an area control game and does not go all “Rising Sun is good, but look at Blood Rage and Kemet, where everyone is always in battle just for the hell of it and my monster miniatures and power cards go “Br-r-r”.

      I like all the games you mentioned. But Rising Sun DIPLOMACY is lacking to say the least. There's not much actual diplomacy in the game, just "hey, wanna ally? We both want to play the same mandate".

    This is my favorite game, and I agree with everything you said. For people looking to buy, I actually think the game is strongest with just the core box - Fox is neat but actually kind of limited in ways you don't see immediately, you can find some cheap Turtle minis and/or chess rooks to DIY the strongholds, and a lot of the KS monsters are just fun noise.
    The Invasion clans are also neat but they're both trickier to play, worthwhile if you fall in love but more of a sidegrade than an upgrade.

    Great review! Intro brilliant! One question about the monsters in the game: Do they play a difference in the game or is it like in Blood rage, where they rarely make a difference?

    • @RoomandBoardReviews
      @RoomandBoardReviews  Před 2 lety +1

      I'd say it's about as much impact as Blood Rage, maybe a little bit more depending on the monster - having that extra Shinto to use up at the Kami Shrines or having an extra Daimyo is decent, but with the battle mechanic your monster can be immediately negated if someone uses the take hostage action, so they aren't super overpowered. The other upgrades are about the same strength too even if you don't get a cool figure to go along with them haha

    • @madsbritbo8005
      @madsbritbo8005 Před 2 lety

      @@RoomandBoardReviews would be nice if they balanced it some more, perhaps make it hard for you to obtain a monster, for example do a mini quest, where to would have to sacrifice some of your resources (men, money, honor, alliance etc.). But it would only work in certain situations, so that players didn’t go for the monsters, every time they want an easy win (much like military victory in civilization). In Those situations, where you make the sacrifices in the right moment, the monster would be deadly. Of course if you misjudged the situation and sacrificed at the wrong moment, the other players would be more inclined to win.

    • @RoomandBoardReviews
      @RoomandBoardReviews  Před 2 lety +1

      @@madsbritbo8005 I actually think the other cards are more powerful because they can't be negated in combat, so while it's fun to take the monsters strategically it's not always the best choice, which is how you want it to be. Coins are so valuable as so the cost of things is really felt especially later on in the battles

    Great review! what are you views on this game at 6 players? About to introduce this to my group but I've heard mixed things at max player count?

    • @RoomandBoardReviews
      @RoomandBoardReviews  Před 2 lety +1

      I've only played 6 players a few times and I definitely still enjoy it, but it changes the game strategy wise. The amount of coins you get becomes a LOT more important, I found coins being super scarce was the main difference, and I think that's because you'll win less harvests, just with so many people on the board. So I'd say just keep that in mind. I'd also say to play with both Sun and Moon clan, or neither one. Just for the balance of who has access to cards and monsters, making sure it's always competitive, because I think having JUST one is a little be unfair, because while everyone else's cards may run out, that one person would still have more monsters to draw from.
      Otherwise I enjoyed it at 6, and would be happy to play it, but it was a bit shocking to me at how different the strategy felt with just that addition of one extra player (because I've played it at 5 a lot)

      @@RoomandBoardReviews Awesome, thanks for the speedy reply. Yea I totally get that, was thinking not using the Dynasty Invasion expansion, to keep things as simple as possible for a first play too. • @RoomandBoardReviews
      @RoomandBoardReviews  Před 2 lety

      @@Dannezou haha, of course, I hope your group loves it! If they're also the type of players to ally for the whole game and not switch things up, maybe suggest that the 3 players who will get that extra turn (the three highest honour) over the course of the game each ally with someone who's not going to. Or don't! That's the beauty of rising sun, it's gonna get uuuugly haha. But if you know your group may not enjoy it if they feel like they don't get a choice, because sometimes people feel that way when they don't get more than one action, just something to consider to make sure they love their first play. If your group can get sensitive about those sorts of things.

    Rising Sun is my favourite game by far, however I normally play with 2 others, and I find it that it is not as good with three people... But I really fucking love the bluffing and backstabbing, it's gorgeous!

    • @RoomandBoardReviews
      @RoomandBoardReviews  Před 3 lety +1

      Awesome! I appreciate it at three because you get all those extra moves, but if I have the choice I think 5 is my favorite player count. I think 3 is great if there are two newer players and 1 very competent player because the alliances can offset that experience.

    • @illuminatidorito4029
      @illuminatidorito4029 Před 3 lety

      @@RoomandBoardReviews I will give it another shot at three then, since I only played once that way! Yesterday I played with a total of 6 and it was brutal, I chose a total of three mandates throughout the whole game 😅 I don't know how the Koi managed to arrive to each war phase with 20 coins/ronin stealing from those with less honor than him (constantly praying to Amaterasu) and getting payed for the ship routes... No one had a chance hahaha

    • @RoomandBoardReviews
      @RoomandBoardReviews  Před 3 lety +1

      @@illuminatidorito4029 oh man, yeah I find 6 players so hard. It feels like SUCH a different experience than 3-5, I think because the coins are so so scarce. That's bananas with koi, utter domination haha. I really like the boat season cards for 3 (I think it's the boat with the way of the snake card that gives you the extra betrayals in the fall season) almost makes me want to without an alliance at the end because it's so fun, and helps offset if that third person hasn't had an alliance for a while.

  • @Hendrycks
    @Hendrycks Před 2 lety

    Rising Sun is my favourite game, but my group, family and gf trying to play all end up at a battle and saying "wait what, you have how much strength??!" Because they didn't remember that say my Monster is a strength of 5 that does something special, and I have an upgrade card that makes my Daimyo a 2, etc, etc and it sort of turns into the abysmal Smash Up where you have to go around the table and math out everyone's strength, every turn, every time for everyone else because they can never remember.
    This feels even worse after bidding as it's too late to retcon it and it's simply because they didn't even know that it was already 8-2-4 strength between the 3 of us, so what they did makes no sense in the context of the battle anyways. That's my main gripe with the game and otherwise it's pure perfection. Kemet B&S, Ankh and Blood Rage are much simpler with counting up strength and any special abilities imo.
    Also, I love the videos, you talk me off the hype of many KS games and I'm here for it. Hey from Ontario too :P

    I like Rising Sun. But I really hated the battle system. It's convoluted. Most of the time half of the biding options are usless to you. And the other half, it's just a coin flip between you and your oponent trying to "guess" what the other will do. I know that you know that I know, so in truth, nobody knows anything.
    The Fox clan is BROKEN and should be banned. If you don't have it, don't bother.
    Also, deals being "not biding", is only a thing if you don't play with the same group every time. Because if you do, your deals better be biding, or nobody will ever make a deal with you again.
    The upgrade mandates from the KickStarter LARGELY affect the game experience. And the strongholds are necessary for visibility.
