    Brown noise is one of the many colors of noise, which also include white noise, pink noise and blue noise. However, brown noise doesn't get its moniker from the color - it's actually named after botanist Robert Brown, who discovered Brownian motion (random particle motion) in the 1800s.
    Brown noise is also known as Brownian noise because its change in sound signal from one moment to the next is random.
    Unlike white noise, whose spectral density (power per Hertz) is even throughout all frequencies, brown noise has a spectral density that's inversely proportional to its frequency squared - in other words, its power significantly decreases as its frequency increases.
    As a result, brown noise has a lot more energy at lower frequencies than it does at higher frequencies. Brown noise is sometimes referred to as red noise because it's somewhat analogous to red light, which has a low frequency.
    To the human ear, brown noise is similar to white noise, but is much deeper - it has the sound of a low roar not unlike that of a strong waterfall.
    Though the names are similar, brown noise has nothing to do with the mythical brown note, a hypothetical low-frequency sound said to cause people to lose control of their bowels.

    I really appreciate this.......but nothing beats SILENCE. Its amazing how hard it is to find a quiet space to study. Used to be able to find it at libraries without reserving a room, but the librarians aren't hardcore about silence anymore. Flippin' university students treat it like a hangout lounge. Most easily available, silent, non-claustrophobic places I've found to study?...... cemetery parks ............... :^)

      Peter Beadle pink and brown noise have more amplitude on their lower frequencies than white noise and having more amplitude on the high frequencies is why white noise has more of that edge, the sort of "sharp" sound to it that you can almost feel stabbing your eardrums if it's too loud.

    Why would we need an HD version of static noise? Its not going to get any clearer!

    • @kingcrimson234
      @kingcrimson234 Před 9 lety +7

      because the higher the video resolution, the higher the bitrate youtube encodes the video AND the audio so yes it is clearer.

    • @Kufunklefec
      @Kufunklefec Před 9 lety +2

      Yes, but the point is static noise by definition is random noise, so losing audio quality makes no difference since it makes the static noise more static-y....

    • @thdremily
      @thdremily Před 9 lety +9

      Kufunklefec Due to youtube codecs, audio compression will actually reduce the randomness of the signal as it is compressed. A lot of truly random data is lost and replaced with systematic data, the systematic data adds a degree of predictability, making the noise seem more "pitchy" than random noise. Try toggling betwee 240 and 1080 to see! The difference would really only be perceivable through headphones or good monitors. Hope that helps!
