  • By request! The outro of Sugar Mags is about as happy as music can be. But better buckle up kids…this trip is a bit of a marathon. B Major pentatonics and a hit of blotter can yield amazing results.

Just great, thank you. Your playing and tutorials for these Dead classics are far and away the very best I've ever heard. I love the way you show fingering, pick direction, you contextualise the notes against the underlying chord and explain their relationship - like b3, b5 or 7 etc., superb.

To be able to nail it down so well is remarkable. Can you fathom the depth of Jerry’s genius to actually invent it?!

Im just 3 minutes into the video...Dude wtf, your playing is insane! The licks are dead on to get that 72 sugar mag sound

      Thanks! Really appreciate the comment😊😊✌️
That’s kinda of the point… similar ideas but not identical. I love that era of his playing. So it’s not too hard to just mimic the areas of the neck he’s working in and develop ideas along the arc of the original solo. Super fun to play!
      Thanks for watching⚡️💀🍄

Ha...that seems about right! This one is a challenge...not that the licks themselves are super hard, it's that they just keep coming. Definitely a workout. Let me know if I can help. If you're a subscriber...thanks for your support. If not, please consider subbing!

That is a lot to chew on. It’s pouring rain here on Kauai as I hone my sunshine daydream chops :) Aloha

Dude, I'm late to this party so I'm doing what I typically do in your comments - thanking you for your generosity as well as providing the close up visuals and note for note presentation of Jerry's work. But I want to go a step further.
I learned how to play this in mid 70's (dating myself) and there was a time when I could almost match him note for note jamming to different live shows from the cassettes I had collected. I actually cite this jam as my crossroad moment that took me from being a good bedroom guitarist to being able to play live and jam across different genres of music and then onto becoming a professional. Your viewers can now easily see how Jerry's uses the scales and technique to weave beautiful melodies and phrasing through chords. Til this day, I still lean back to what I learned from the Sugar Mag, Daydream jam to craft work I continue to produce on sessions or in my own music. I sound nothing like him but I learned so much from him.
What I want to say is, I got really close, but you my friend took it right to the core. Your playing is flawless and brings me supreme joy watching your videos and listening to you explain what you doing. You are also doing so much to highlight the genius that was Jerry.
    Hats off.

Thank you very much! Though I definitely patterned my ideas and phrases off of the Garcia solo from E72. So while it’s not note for note…I can’t really take too much credit.

Great lesson, Jack! Trying to borrow some of these to throw into "Blue Sky"!

      Hi John!
Yeah, some of this stuff could transfer to that tune. You’ll need to account for the different keys and grooves but in terms of intervals… it’ll work.
      Wishing you well!

    Hi Jack:
Is it possible to get the tabs for Sugar Magnolia solo
you've been a great inspiration to me as the way you teach is the way I learned to play back in the 70's
by ear and watching people play, no CZcams back then
