Today, I take a look at Retro Rick's video on his second channel in regards to his hatred and frustrations with selling new games in his video game store. - Hry
Rick also hemmorages money on his store design. Like yes its cool, but how far overboard does he need to go with his fantasy playground.
Also he is going to make 80% of his margins on 5-10% of his items.
Hes a pastor....sooo I mean gets his money through tax free donations anyway
i been saying the same thing on his video, hes got a disgusting case of fomo. he doesnt even want the ridiculous clutter of things he buys. he just afraid of not getting something that comes his way he HAS to buy everything he thinks is remotely cool in that moment. if he doesnt get help with it soon hes gonna end up going bankrupt. in fact id wager a few months of slow business would devistate his store.
@@willnox1 he's a youth/band leader, they don't get paid for that. Plus he wouldn't have time to be a pastor, he quit his day job to be a store owner full time. If y'all gonna hate/criticize someone do your research.

That's one of the issues with these resellers: they always want and expect max profit on every little thing
Yeah and retail is just not built that way. Not every single item in Best Buy makes them a lot of money. Consoles for example they don’t make much but that’s the item that brings people into the store. The associates are responsible for building rapport with clientele and suggesting add ons that are profitable. Or iPads for example. Best Buy makes more money off of a screen protector than they do off of the actual machine.
So in this case, you like big corporations and distributors screwing your local game store?
@@steviefreakincIt's the software attach rate that gets them the margins in gaming. That's why Xbox is a very successful business even though they lost the console war. They get something like seven software sold for every single Xbox. That's a decent margin.

You’d be surprised man. New games is a good way to engage with the local community and drive more sales and repeat customers to your store.
@@steviefreakinc I dont feel that is the case for a retro video game store. Most people are going in there looking for things you can't get a best buy or walmart. My local shops that dont carry new games are thriving.

@@steviefreakincNew games have such small margins, it's not really worth it to carry them. Even for larger retailers. Best Buy would rather you buy a fridge or HDMI cable over a brand new game.

One time I went through the drive-through with a friend at Taco Bell and they didn’t even say anything. They just turned on their speakers so you knew they were listening and we just started ordering lol they can’t even be bothered to say hi to you.

It costs less than a dollar to burn files to a DVD, but they sell them at 70$. That's where the margins are.
You're right, Retro Rick doesn't understand retail, but apparently you do. That is why he has a successful retail store, and you do not. 10/10 logic, love it.

With a midnight release. He could make it like a party. Hold a contest or two and stay late. Then ask for everyone's name who pre-ordered and give them the game at midnight. Big fun event will create repeat customers and foster a community.

When I watched the original video I didn't even notice the customer waiting to be helped and then leaving shortly after standing there for a while. The employee filmer guy should have put the camera down and told his boss I've got to get back to work

My 14 year old loves retro Rick because of the five dollar game collection. Personally he reminds me of phoenix re sale and I hate everything about the resellers

The whole point of new games in a retro store is trade ins. Does Rick not know this? Getting rid of them will not help him get trade ins. Maybe offer the warranty like gamestop? Get a membership going. Come on now

All these "retro store" owners who spent years hating on GameStop have basically become GameStop. I had a shop offer me 70 bucks for a backwards compatible ps3 in working condition with a PS3 controller....Come on

Truth been told, i have no idea how to deal with distributors, but if the margin is so low it seens obvious you just dont sell new videogames unless you get a better deal from the distributor.
What i give Ricks a point thought, its that the high prices of new games and the big discount they get when they flop is clearly a bad business for retails who need to keep the price as high as possible, its there way to force us into digital, me as well have most of my games digital for that sole reason.
Would it be much better if games released at lower prices and keep it firmly for a reasonable time, not Nintendo standards, but near that range.
I think Rick just needs to order less and pay shipping so he’s not sitting on $100s in new games. Like he has this problem because he just won’t pay $15-$30 shipping. 😂

There is a video game store in my country Denmark that sell both new released games and old games all the way back to PlayStation 1 Etc - And the owner of that store never had any problems like Retro Rick has here, And he opened his store in 2019 right before the Pandemic hit, And did extremely well even with "That" everywhere

Im guessing he's not doing good business wise if hes complaining about selling new games. Siccooper , the guy that owns Double Jump Video Games, buy them all the time and he never complains cause he knows what he's doing. Most of the time he do it for his customers

Nah, margins on new games have always been small. One of the main reasons retailers have been ditching physical media.

Alot of new business they say fail in about 3 years time. Alot if factors go into to that. One of the things that go into that with the retro videogame stores is they do not have a business degree nor the true capital and research that goes into owning/running your own business. That is why alot of retro game stores are so in debt and go bankrupt and they close. 90% of new businesses sadly have major debt behind them. Yes there are retro stores that are still open that have made it past the 1-3 year mark but just as many went out of business too sadly!

remember that video he did around christmas time? he made his employees all work a 13 hour shift w 3 hours between the shift the next day.. and i doubt he really compensated them enough. just so they could decorate the store with more clutter.

He should just warn a preorder from us could be late. I wouldn’t even doubt they ask customers if they would like to preorder a game from us and show a list to choose from. Then some customer was the only one to get a certain game and when they came to pick it up they tell them sorry since you were the only one we accidentally didn’t get it for you.

Gamestore owners i know, if their shipment is delayed, will actually go grab the game from Walmart or some other large retailer the morning its released to fulfill preorders. They lose the profit but keep the customer.
That’s how you keep business. Rick don’t care about customers enough for that
He will make more money from the video than the sales to 1 customer who would have asked someone for help if he really wanted something.

He loses more money in the fancy statues and display promotional stuff than games I think 😅 I always felt like he had too much with that stuff. I remembered the video he got of that Mario statue and said he didn't know where to put it and was considering buying more characters. Then the thing just sits where it was put to begin with now lol

Not to compare but I gotta give credit and shout out to another game store owner that makes content. Double Jump Video Games gets a handful of new games and takes pre-orders too. Even with the potential loss because they're a game store. The guy is just now getting a new store just at the size of Rick's and doesn't make content about losses or anything. Dude flips/resells but is honest and open about it. Puts the money back into his business.
It's just funny seeing two sides of the coin here.

I'm getting the feeling that rick might think he'll lose capital if he can't buy from ppl coming to the store, he probably prioritize them 1st and distributors 2nd. A great example is "doublejump games" (cooper, the owner) has the biggest switch wall of titles & gets every title day one. Also, he hasn't mentioned anything bad on deliveries being delayed. So Yeah, Steve just like u said....maybe if he (Rick) would order them in time he wouldn't have disappointed customers too.

If he's getting the games from Canada the distributor (the one he doesn't want to mention) is Video Games Plus. If he's buying games from them he deserves to get screwed cuz that's what they do to collecting.

Yes the preorder typically you prepay $5 or the whole game. But yeah the controllers definitely make him more than $5
I agree that he doesn't seem to know how retail works. It sounds like he is frustrated because the dynamics of how obtaining and selling new games is different from that of obtaining and selling used games. Rather than taking out his frustration on the structure of retail selling because it is something relatively new to him, he should instead recognize that he needs to learn more about how to make selling new games become profitable so he can bring in more money by meeting the demand for both the used and new game markets. Sometimes facing a new challenge will reveal to you what knowledge and experience you need to overcome it.
It’s difficult to see Rick being successful with this because he doesn’t have a lot of retail experience. Like you said, he only knows the reseller side of stuff which is buy used for cheap and sell at market for full value.

His channel and content was a lot of fun when it was just him reselling and showing off his collection. His ridiculous hoarding and FOMO was hilarious - and sad. But when he got a store it all became a store commercial - which I get cuz he has bills to pay but so annoying to watch. I unsubscribed. But it’s also strange the amount of money he is spending. He was a church worship leader. He was not getting big bucks. He grew up poor so presumably his parents didn’t help him buy the store. He absolutely must have a backer for all this. Maybe his wife’s parents or maybe someone from the church or wherever. Which again is fine - business partnerships happen. Maybe that person doesn’t want their name out there who knows but he could say “I have a partner in this who doesn’t want to be known.” There’s something else contributing to his store ownership because there’s just no way he did this on his own. His poor family if he got it by remortgaging his house.
That’s quite interesting. He could have done it if he saved a lot of his CZcams revenue for a while. Didn’t he say that in the beginning when he bought the store?

I have 10 years retail experience, 7 years of customer service experience. 2 of those 10 years of retail experience I was the store manager for a local game store but not GameStop just to clarify. I only worked for GameStop as a regular associate for almost 2 years. I think I have a better understanding than Ricky on how retail works.

I respect what you’re feeling and telling me. I just wanted to do the video on Rick because of how mediocre his role as a retail store owner/manager is. He’s complaining that new games aren’t that profitable for him like it’s a new concept that he was unaware of after nearly a year of running his business. He’s also creating an 11 min video to make a 3 min point. And ignoring customers in his store for his CZcams rocket. I’ll focus on another reseller next, I’d be interested in hearing your suggestion if you have one.
