Since this is the "clean" version, that has a very specific part cut out of the lyrics (for explicit lyrics reasons), the song paints a very different picture. _With_ those cut out lyrics (The "And when I dream" part is MUCH longer) included, for me, it's about an abused person that snaps and turns the violence unto their abuser - finally "getting down with the sickness" that "was the gift that has been given to me" - beating up their mother, possibly killing her after prolonged times of physical and psychologic abuse received from her. It's indeed disturbing - especially since, as you said several times, it has such a dang catchy rythm and energetic tune below the lyrics.
Also, I'd describe David's sounds as animalistic, tribalistic - it's akin more to battle cries, like the sounds from a Hakka or similar. It grabs you and makes the listener huff and puff with energy and, yes, agressiveness.
That's the big letdown of this video.
I was so bummed to not get the best part of the song.

Going this route, i.e. that of David Draiman's heavier singing style, I HEAVILY recommend that Elizabeth evaluate Disturbed - "Stricken" (studio version).
Draiman seemed to me to use greater vocal range in "Stricken" than in "Down With The Sickness". (Plus, the "Stricken" track is excellent, and made to be played LOUD.)

When this song first came out I was in my car at a stop light and this song came on. Since my windows were up, when the first "Ooh-wah-ah-ah-ah!" came on I sang along out loud and noticed that the guy in the car on my left seemed to be doing the same. I was in my upper 40's at the time and the guy next to me in a BMW looked like a middle-aged lawyer. The second time, we both did the "Ooh-wah-ah-ah-ah!" at each other and the light turned green and we both drove off, rocking out.
I was working in a snooty high end window blind manufacturing company at the time.. on the phone.. and this song came on in the background and it was so good, so hilarious that we all (the phone reps for this snooty company) all went .. oh wah ah ah ah simultaneously.. all on different calls with different clients! I guess you had to be there, but it was great!.. I was like, what the fuck was that? lolol.. glory days!! xo

I actually saw this song sung live at download festival and the mic broke. The entire crown carried on singing and I swear that even though I was in the middle of the crowd, we could still hear his voice. He carried on singing with us and it was INCREDIBLE. I'll never forget that feeling.

He didn't put the vocals on separate tracks. He actually switches back and forth on the fly, which is incredibly impressive in my opinion. You can see him switching the vocal tone instantly in live performances.
For sure he does that live, but on official produced recordings everyone does separate tracks. Makes it easier to get the song just right

This song always reminds me of the first night out with one of my now oldest friends at Eddies #8 in Brum. She thought I was quite mild mannered till this came on and I was jumping off the bar.

The funny part is that is the exact reason they are in there. He had just randomly done it once and was like I'm going to put this into s song. Paraphrasing here by the way. He talks about it in an interview.

Disturbed live are my drug of choice. I think I’ve seen them close to 40 times now 😂 one tour I went to 4 shows in 6 days, up front on the rail each time.
I was them when they were just an opening band for X-fest in Dayton OH and it was still the best concert experience I've ever had. Just amazing
Yes!!! Saw them live from this album tour in St. Louis. The concert changed my life along with this album.
David has said in interviews that the band started playing for the first time, and the "Ooo ah, ah, ah, ah" just came out of nowhere. The band stopped playing, being so blindsided by the sound, and then insisted he keep it in the song.
It has that same wolf masked Peter Gabriel and Genesis vibe in it, when the crazy of the vocalist slaps the band in the face and leaves them stunned. And I live for it!
If I recall correctly, it was supposed to be just silence in that part and he felt he needed to do something about it lmao

I agree with Elizabeth's comment at one point that one of the multiple (3 or more) singing styles that David Draiman was incorporating seemed to include among them a reggae-like singing style.
I'd never thought of that before in the decades I've listened to Disturbed, but it does seem to be a good description of one of Draiman's possible influences to his singing styles.

I remember seeing him on Bill Maher's "Politically Incorrect" and he made all of them sound like High School dropouts!
I never knew all I needed in my life was a professional opera performer slowly discovering rock and heavy metal and enjoying every little bit of new musical sound and experience like a kid in a candy store, but here we are. I am having so much fun watching you go through a roller coaster of new musical emotions in your brain! I am smiling so much seeing your reactions I am nearly in tears!! never stop reacting to these :)
Classical and rock are actually similar. So no wonder.
It's hard to explain how it felt when this first hit the airwaves, it was just an explosion of new vocal sounds we were all hearing. It was just a glorious time for music for some of us.
It was this channels's analysis of Disturbed's cover of "The Sound of Silence" that convinced me that reaction videos could be works of art unto themselves. Still, who would have imagined that our lovely siren-tist would ever get down with the sickness? Clearly madness is not the only gift that has been given to us. OOH, AH,AH,AH,AH!!

I agree you guys. Once I discovered Elizabeth and her reactions with so much enthusiasm and insights, I binge watch all the time. She's awesome.
Listening to the unedited version will reveal that the song is about child abuse and how that traumatic experience creates a legacy of darkness and pain with the abused that will continue if the abused can't reconcile the experience through treatment and become a cycle breaker.
This song is deeply personal for me as a child abuse survivor and father. I refused to expose my children to "the sickness" that was within me, and through years and years of counseling - I can recognize when the scars I carry begin to metastasize into negative reactions and behavior that could be harmful to my wife or kids.
It's a daily burden and struggle, but it's a personal war I fight with unyielding determination to protect my family from the dark heritage my mother bestowed upon me.
Through my counseling I've discovered that I have a condition that is called complex PTSD - which is common with victims of child abuse. I'm happy to share that I am able to recognize triggers and segregate myself as needed to process my responses in much safer and healthier ways. I'm also transparent about my condition with my wife and children through age appropriate discussions that remove the taboo of the issue and inform my loved ones on what I'm experiencing and at the same time understand the importance of mental health.
That being said, this song still shakes me to my core - especially when the unedited version launches into his rage against his mother/abuser. It stays with us all of our lives.
Thank you, David - for capturing the unspoken pain and rage that victims of abuse carry with them throughout their lives.

am father and survivor, too..gods, this whole story sounds like my story.
I still have nightmares about the time my dad tied me to a tree on top of the hill outside our house, during a heavy lightning storm. He wanted to teach my sisters a lesson, I hadn't done anything wrong but I'm male and he'd never wanted male children so I was the focus of his abuse, my sisters got some too but no where near as much as I did and I welcomed that so they didn't have to experience it. My dad's favourite method of 'training' (his name for it) was either a horse whip until he drew blood or cigarettes put out on my back.
I beat the crap out of him when I was 15-16, threw him through his shop window and I haven't seen him since.
I like to think I took the lessons learned from my parents and did the exact opposite with my kids and they've turned out well, they love me and I adore them so I think my parents taught me how to be a good dad by their being terrible parents.
Not exaggerating here: my dad tried to sell my eldest sister when she was 4. He arranged for a French family to buy her, the price was £500 and a used Ford Cortina.
His plan fell through when my uncle and grandad found out and threatened to make him dissappear. He didn't try to sell any of us after that but he would regularly tape us I to our beds so he could go to the pub while my mum was at work. He beat my mum too, she lost twins due to a beating from him so while I do resent my mum a bit, I also understand her lack of protection for us. I have nothing but contempt for my dad and I swear, when he dies I am going to the funeral and I'm going to urinate on his corpse.
What I adore is Elizabeth being entirely mesmerized by the music, yet remaining clinical. You can always tell when someone truly loves all types of music, versus just saying they do.
One of my favourite moments in these videos is when something awesome catches her so unawares she just cracks up laughing & has to rewind cos she missed the bit! 😆
David Draiman is one of the best live rock singers out there.
I saw Disturbed do a show once where about halfway through he apologized to the crowd for sounding terrible because he had a cold… we were all like, “If that’s how good he sounds when he sick, how amazing is he when he’s well?”
Fun fact: the “ooaaaahhhahaahah” wasn’t originally planned. One day while in the studio the energy built up in draiman just came out like that.
I've heard that the sounds at the beginning he did as part of a warm up for his vocals and the producer was like "yo, do that" (paraphrasing of course haha)

Man this song always brings back memories.
In 2001 I went to a Marilyn Manson concert and Disturbed were the opening act for it. I wasn't even the biggest Manson fan, but my friends wanted to go so badly so I joined. This was on the height of Marilyn Mansons popularity(gods guns and government tour) and both delivered an absolute spectacular show.
Disturbed was rather unknown at that time but the crowd loved them! And the show was pretty fitting for their name, the lead singer got executed via electric chair at the start of their show!
And in the end there were staff member distributing demo tapes (yes, still cassette tapes) for a new up and coming band called "Linkin Park" who just released their first music video a few month ago!
It was such an insane time to be young and into the whole concert/live metal scene.
Aw, man. I caught the very last add-on show for the Guns God & Government tour, but since it was a last-minute addition, there was no opening band (also no assigned seating, so I did score front-row by standing in line for 14 hours).
Fortunately, Disturbed had toured with Korn (I think it was the Family Values tour) the year prior, so I was lucky enough to have seen them then, and caught Linkin Park when they toured with Adema the year after.
Goddamn the early 2000's were a great time to see metal shows, back when tickets were only $30-50 bucks and you could actually get them before online bots by just camping out at the ticket booth the night before they went on sale. I got my kid Meshugga tickets for their 18th birthday, and they were like $200 each because you could only buy them from 3rd party sellers. No kid today could ever afford to go to every show that runs through town they way we could do with a little planning, which is tragic, because live shows are the absolute best way to experience music.
I was about to lambaste you for inaccuracy -- LP and disturbed were already huge by then! Looked it up. I can't believe hybrid theory had only just been released. My introduction to metal/rock just happened to coincide with the rise of these legends.

Have seen Disturbed 5 times live, and each time when David sang DWTS....his "clean" vs. his "distorted" vocals sound the same live as they do on this recorded version. He doesn't need to sing them separately! Btw, loved your sweet and thorough reaction!

the cool thing about the beginning of the song is that originally it was purely instrumental there was supposed to be a pause but it was meant to build tension for the rest of the song. One day during rehearsals David decided to let out the iconic "oh-ah-ah-ah", the band members stopped playing and they were all like "what the hell was that?" and David thought he had done something wrong but the rest of the group loved it and an unforgettable intro was born.

20+ years after this song came out and I’m still singing “ooh ah ah ah ah” daily. Multiple times. This and the song from the Little Mermaid have literally been stuck in my head for over 20 years.

I was told he was originally vocally trained as a traditional Jewish Cantor, and his bass and mid tones are amazing. I love the gravel of his voice.
Apparently, after being expelled from three different yeshivas and blowing up his high school rabbi's van, his family realized he wasn't cut out for the seminary. So he then took his training and angst and went to rock.
I don’t know if this is a good thing or not, but I think this song changed the entire course of my sons life when he was two. We were driving home from his daycare and this song came on the radio. I left it on because I wanted to see his reaction to the “Ohhh-ah-ah-ah”. When that dropped the look on his face completely changed and he kept trying to make that noise over and over. After that he made me play this song for him probably 500 times. It’s such a great song that I never got sick of hearing it. He’s 7 now. Still loves this song and definitely has an affinity for metal over all other genres of music.
One of the best things about having children is sharing music you love with them! Whether they grow into it or out of said music, the infancy to pre-school time is precious!
My daughter is almost 3 and I've played her a variety of music form Steve Wonder & Tina Turner to SOAD & Little Dragon and to see her sing these variety of songs is just precious. 🙃
It would be great Elizabeth if you could arrange one of your interviews with David, he is a nice guy and very interesting. Talking vocals with him would be good to hear, I think he had some serious training in his younger years. Just want to say that your reaction videos are head and shoulders above any of the others we see on the tube, enough to say that yours is the only one I now watch.

Disturbed got me trough a tough time in my life. His lyrics and screams echoed my pain. He expressed what my soul felt. So glad you did this!
Your initial reaction/enjoyment to the beginning of the song and his distortion vocals is great and was literally all of us when this song came out. We were all blasting it in our cars trying to make those sounds.
The biggest reason he has such a unique sound is he did damage his chords years ago. A lot of people also forget that he is classically trained. The man and the whole band has so much talent!!! One of the biggest reasons why they have been able to have such a long career is because of their ever changing sounds.
Their "ever changing" music is due to one thing. Their growth as humans. Not sure of your age but are you the same person now than what you were 20-30 years ago? I'm not....thank god. Essentially yes....I still go nuts when some banging ass music comes on. I still hold some of the beliefs I did when I was 20. But I have evolved greatly as well. If you dont you get left behind. Selling out? No....not by any means. Wising up? Hell yes.

I don't think I ever got how much voices differ in songs until I saw someone reacting to each change.
I really found the full version cathartic, as someone with an abusive mother. The entire song really spoke to me, and helped me realize that I wasn’t alone.
The most disturbing thing to me is that culturally, we'd prefer to air a neutered version of the song in the radio to hide the fact that this shit is happening to people. What a wildly misguided attempt at protection.
I had the opposite reaction and got really triggered the first time I heard that part. I feel it in a really visceral way that makes me feel physically ill. To the point that, as much as I love this song, I cannot interact with that part. I was happy to see the pinned comment that said this was the cut version so I knew I could enjoy it without the tension of watching for the part I would need to skip.
I am glad this song exists in its entirety and brings catharsis to many people in that form, but I am also glad both options exist.

Uhm, I’ve never been to a Disturbed show that just had 100 people in it. That entire Stadium/Amphitheater/Lawn is singing with him and it’s glorious!

I heard it once at Ascend in Nashville, TN. Outdoors, that sound is just primal as hell, especially shouted by at least 3,000 individuals.
From what I heard Louder than Life had over 40,000 people in attendance. It was almost from on side to the other for them.

Heh. Elizabeth almost short-circuited trying to analyze David's vocals. She vocalized so many things we, as Disturbed fans, inherently understand. Without the constraints of familiarity she pinpoints within seconds the nuance in their sound.

Yeah that look of pure shock like "wait....what???" Sound of silence by disturbed is only other vid I saw of her reviewing and at times I thought she was about to start singing herself!
I think "The Night" is a great showcase of the facets of David's vocals - the power, the beauty, and the rhythm. I firmly believe it's one of their best songs from one of their best albums.

He has such a percussive voice. It’s very straight, very clean, and it cuts. It cuts exactly where it needs to, I love the way he enunciates. He keeps his vowels generally “normal” (not particularly wide nor narrow), but the way he delivers them is how they stand out. Unlike Brent in Shinedown, who is my number one example of someone with very wide vowels, or Amy Lee who has generally narrow or tall vowels.
You've basically experienced Disturbed in reverse in term of their career. Sound of Silence took David a lot of work to get the gravely part out of his voice because it is a natural part of his voice. Songs like Down with the Sickness, Inside the Fire, Indestructible, and Pain Redefined are prime Disturbed songs that showcase David's amazing vocal capabilities which are unique only to him.
I would argue that David Grohl also shares this dual beautiful baritone juxtaposed against the screamo vocal fry stuff. But yeah, this is guy is a vocal legend to me too. A fantastic singer.

The Disturbed cover of Land of confusion, originally by Genesis, wouldn't be a bad one to analyze if you get the chance. It was a really interesting take on the tune. Definitely one of their better covers.

I agree and the originators of some of their covers (paul simon) have said that Disturbed's covers are "what the song should have been, but music wasn't there yet" which is what i think about "Land of Confusion". But, I also feel that Phil Collins always does a good job
I love that cover too. I love how, when they do cover songs, they put their little spin on it but mostly stay true to the original song. It shows respect and appreciation but also wanting to bring it to their fans who may not have heard the original before. I loved Genesis and Phil Collins as a kid so when I heard Disturbed's version I thought, this is how covers should be. Respect the original yet add a bit of your flavor to it. 😎👍

I just saw this video.my brother was fighting cancer for twelve years. And he was so afraid of all the changes his body went through because of the illness .this song means so much to me .and it helped me through some very hard times with his passing love it
You already did his cover of Sound of Silence. But imagine what those of us who'd been listening to Disturbed - with every album at least a similar style to this song - experienced when we heard him cover that.
I knew he was good but I was just simply flabbergasted when I first heard it.

Ah, this brings back memories. This was from their first album. This bass player (nicknamed Fuzz) was asked to leave the band after their second album, and I auditioned with the band to replace him. Obviously, I didn't get the gig as they chose a guy that they previously knew and toured with (from a different band), but it's still a great memory of mine! A few of my favorite Disturbed songs that you should check out are "Prayer" from their second album, and I also really love the song "The Light" because of its message. That song is on their 2015 album Immortalized.

She is incredibly perceptive even when hearing these songs for the first time. Draiman's sort of scat/rapping/atonal sounds were probably influenced to some degree by Jonathan Davis of Korn, whose own weird sounds were in turn was influenced by harsh, raspy Jamaican reggae vocalists, and she seems to have picked up on that almost immediately.

@@based9930 I do not believe so. I think she is quite genuine and loves music so much that it greatly affects her. She is a sophisticated and trained listener and very nuanced in her understanding and skills with voice. I think her number of views are strong because she is high class and knows of what she speaks. You can learn a lot from her. She has a pure approach to music and is quite open minded. I would think you would want to consider giving her more credit rather than taking a cynical approach of assuming she is trying to manipulate us all with facial expressions.
Your reaction is the exact same reaction we ALL had when we first heard it. It makes you smile, it's very fun! And it's a nice heavy groove. And most importantly, it's catchy! The first time I ever heard this song, my uncle had to babysit us, but the night before he went to some cool underground metal concert in Oklahoma City. He grabbed a demo tape and he just had to show us the next morning. I will never forget my uncle popping in this tape and blowing our Tiny minds. He too initially laughed at the OH AH AH AH AHs as he showed us kids the song, it sounded like a big monkey to me and I giggled too, but we never stopped banging our heads.
After the night was over, when our mom came to pick us up. My uncle said 'Mark my words. Disturbed is going to be the next big band' and my uncle was 100% right, but i don't know if he even knew just how huge they would become !

She made me laugh out loud! But I've been hearing this song for years. Funny story, I bought a few goats in Ohio and driving back to Ky over the bridge in Cincinnati. The bridge has gaps that bounced the truck a bit and IT WAS IN TIME TO THIS SONG! I had the goats in the back with a camper top and I could see girls in the back riding along. One doe (doe is a deer and also a female goat) has these loonng black ears and the motion is making her nod her head- WITH THE MUSIC!
So this black headed, long eared, Boer goat, *head banging* to the song with her ears swinging, I so wish I could have video of the memory. Just something you had to be there, I can't hear this song without remembering Raven rocking out in the truck laying back in the hay. It was just really cool for me anyway.....

I just found you! oh my! it's amazing to see a professional see and hear in disturbed and especially David, what I've been seeing and hearing since 2000! such talent and vocal range. I've been to their live shows and it sounds the same as it does on their cds. you really need to check out their newer stuff. their sound and lyrics have matured a great deal over the years. they are a truly amazing band!
I was never a huge Disturbed fan, until I saw them live at a concert. There is indeed something special about thousands of people screaming "Oooh-wah-ah-ah-ah". Dramain's stage presence is out of this world!
"Hold onto Memories" is another of their not usual songs. It is amazing. I love all of their music.

I must admit, I just heard you critique the song "sound of silence" from that point I became a fan. Just being able to see a different perspective on a song and video that I truly like. But, then seeing it through a different set of lenses made me want to listen to it once more. Seeing so much more of what is truly going on. Your expressive tone on your face. Makes me see a true love for music! No matter what type it is. The only word I can use to justify it is: True. True love and compassion for music!
Wow, I had an epiphany about why this song resonates so powerfully with me after listening to your take on it.
When you highlighted the confined vs 'unleashed' personas in this performance, it reminded me that I heard this song a lot when I was deployed, overseas in 2004 - 05 and I realized that we spent a lot of our time balanced, sometimes barely, between these facets within us; just in case something might happen.

I was at the very first ever Disturbed show- it was in a bar on the South Side of Chicago- they played "Down With the Sickness" just like you're hearing it now. I was blown away more than I have ever been in my life. Ive seen them at least 30 times- 25 of those have been in BARS! with 100/200 PEOPLE!!!! I am an ORIGINAL member of their "Street Crew".

Disturbed has a song about suicide prevention "A Reason to Fight" that I think is a great choice. Not the official version, but the live compilation. It's very deep and emotional. Still hands down one of the best Disturbed songs to date (shame about the cut-out though). I highly recommend checking out The Light and Into the Fire (studio versions) by Disturbed as well, fantastic songs with great messages in them. Or if you're looking for something that's just more headbanging fun, check out Stricken or Ten Thousand Fists.

4 months late, but I highly recommend “Indestructible” and “Land of Confusion” (Genesis cover) and “The Vengeful One” all have fantastic vocals in my opinion.
EDIT: David Draiman has publicly stated the song is a reference to the nanny state created by government with mother being the metaphorical representation of that, and the “beast unleashed” are the oppressed people fighting back.

Thank u for breaking down metal like u do. Your video on duality toxicity and new halestorm name escapes me atm I was able to show those to my grandma who has had huge impact in my life. She was able to get and understand they way you explain the details like I never could and that in turn has allowed our relationship to grow and for her to understand why I love the music I do and even to the point on how I view the world. So thank you from the bottom of my heart. I couldn't put into words how I appreciate all the time effort and passion you've put into music.
Oh my, I love the way you've been able to just break down the beginning of the song into tones and rhythms. Hear it musically for what it is and not just view it as noise. Thank you for being able to point out how songs like this are very structured whether intended or not and follow music principles that bring it all together.
