KD is Kraft Dinner, and Canadian. The American Kraft mac n cheese both looks (the box) and taste very different, and it most certainly does not lack salt.
I'm glad you shared this. I was thinking, "KD? When the heck did they change their branding to KD?" Kraft Mac & Cheese was invented in the US, and I'm going to go out on a limb and guess that our version is less healthful, but also more flavorful. My favorite is the Spirals. I don't like any of the chunky shape ones, because they're bulky and don't cook evenly. And I don't really care if I sound like a boxed mac & cheese enthusiast. A rose by any other name....
I was wondering about that KD. I thought maybe they rebranded the Kraft Deluxe. The Deluxe we eat here uses a packet of cheese you squeeze in instead of powder though.
I agree. KD all the way.
Doesn't change the fact that it's all still crap.
Canadian.... KD is Canadian eh!
As someone who grew up in household which most meals came from a box or a can, mac and cheese was a pretty solid staple dinner. We often mixed it with peas and then a protein such as hot dogs or chicken. While definitely not the best, at least it fed us.
tuna casserole, with mac and cheese, canned tuna, frozen peas, canned mushrooms and mushroom soup with grated cheddar on top, baked! I haven't had it in well over a decade, but it was a staple of a poor family growing up, and I have such nostalgia for it still.
@@darrenflavelle1845 The only thing yours is missing -vs - Mine is ours had crushed Pringles on top of it. And the last time I ate it has to have been over 30 years ago.
Damn you! . . . Now you got me wanting it! And I know I can't get it. Cause the wife hates fish !
Peas and dogs!
@@darrenflavelle1845 minus the shrooms. That's what we did in Ohio! Still to this day!
Mac n Cheese with cut up fried Hot Dogs in it. Some veggies on the side and your meal is complete. I STILL eat that to this day and my wife loves it. She gets anxious if I don't feed that to her every couple of weeks...and we are in our 50s and can afford better but, we like it. Just like Top Ramen noodles.
"This tastes like hangover food, sitting in a room with the curtains closed, that's going inside me. That whole box." Yes, this is exactly when and how I eat Kraft Dinner. Spot on. Uncanny
I was like, ‘That sounds familiar’. Lol
I think that’s like 50% of the market
Meanwhile we have Jalapeno Cheddar Cheetos and Flamin' Hot Cheetos flavored Kraft and they were completely neglected.
I had to doctor it. I added 6-7 slices of American processed cheese. Touch of milk.
You would never complain about there not being enough salt if it were the US version. I was so confused, until I realized they weren't eating what we get. I have to use unsalted butter here in the States, to cut down the salt. Also, echoing that it's best used as a base. I usually add tuna and veggies.
KD = Kraft Dinner. In the U.S. it's branded as "Macaroni and Cheese" or "Mac and Cheese," while in Canada they call it "Kraft Dinner." I suspect the boxes were Canadian.
For real nostalgia, mix some cut-up hot dogs into it.
Kudos to Clisare for donating her hair to charity!
You'll note the first box has a maple leaf on it. KD also gets a different ratio of butter and milk than M&C.
I'm so glad to find someone who also puts hotdogs in their mac and cheese! I thought I was a weirdo when my wife looked at me like I had 6 heads when I made her lunch when we first started dating 😅
When I was little it was branded as ," Kraft Cheese & Macaroni" it was a big thing then. But that was another time, 80-95?. But I love it regardless, feeds my kid when I need a quick yummy meal

Pasta is a good way to stretch food dollars, as it's quite filling.
Yep, mom said the same thing.
I'm not on a budget and I still eat Kraft Mac

I wanna see them try Hamburger Helper now. Those actually taste different and some of them have potatoes instead of pasta.

As a child my mother would make mac and cheese with a pound of ground beef and a whole white onion. That concoction would feed a family for a meal. It was an evening's supper meal. Not every night, but more than not. Funny that as an adult, I don't eat it at all because of the powdery cheese sauce. There's a lot of ingredients in that powdery magic.
My mother made the exact same thing recently.
Remember, these are made to appeal to kids. A child's taste buds interpret flavors more intensely than an adult. So, the flavors are toned down. American adults like them because they remember loving them as kids.
My mom used to keep these in the cabinet just in case she needed something quick to fix. You can improve the flavor by adding shredded cheese or bacon bits. But it's never going to taste like the real mac and cheese that Mom made when she was not in a rush.
Also, as an adult who sometimes ate these as a kid, they do taste better now after you've had a drink or five.
Have you tried the taquito Mac n cheese? I couldn’t take two bites without running for the milk! My kids love the heat! But yeah I know what you’re saying.
it was just as bad to me when i was a kid lol
You need an American to hang out for a couple weeks and make these things the way we do it. Get the authentic experience with extra calories and shame. I'm available early next year.
Hahaha, I'm available immediately 😆
as an American i say kraft mac and cheese SUCKS !

But you're comparing a wagyu steak to dollar store hamburger meat. (Now with 30% less sawdust!)
Ramen became popular in the US in the late 70's. Prior to that Kraft "Blue Box" Macaroni & Cheese (and even cheaper generic brands) were the poor college students' choice of quick carbs. Often supplemented with cut-up hot dogs, or a can of tuna. In Canada, it was originally sold as Kraft Macaroni & Cheese, but popularly referred to as "Kraft Dinner", leading Kraft to change the name.
Mmmmm..... tuna in Mac and cheese is legit
The trick to making KD taste "better" is to cook for only 3 minutes (al dente). Use a lot of butter when it's hot, immediately after straining. Then use cream sparingly after adding the mix. Stir until it looks like a thick sauce. Serve instantly. Let it sit too long and the noodles soak up the moisture. Adding fresh ground pepper helps. Serve with a side of ice-cold milk. It's not Nonna's pasta, but it does in a pinch.
They definitely had it reheated - which kills all the flavor and changes the texture!
@@tracypedersen1034 Ah, ok. That explains it.
I sometimes use unsalted butter to tone down the cheese pack a little, but otherwise I totally agree with you.
Or, just buy the American version and make it according to the directions. It is surely not good for you, but it does not need doctoring to taste "right".
Three minutes is way undercooked. Al dente is usually a minute or so short so it has some bite but isn’t crunchy. Three minutes and it’ll be crunchy.
I've always thought of the cooking instructions on the box as more of a suggestion! You need twice the butter, half the milk and then add in a good-sized handful of grated cheese. It also needs a decent amount of pepper (but no salt cos it's already salty af!). If you're feeling fancy, you can add herbs - chives or tarragon or dill are all excellent choices - as well as leftover roast chicken or frozen veg. It was a staple in our house growing up, usually with hot dogs, and is excellent hangover food :D
When I was a kid, my mom used the recommended butter but sour cream instead of milk to reduce the liquid but up the fat (this was during the 90s in America, so the reduced fat milk craze made it even more necessary). It was ever so slightly tangy and with peas and tuna made a kid-friendly mid-week meal out of the cupboard, especially when crushed ritz or goldfish crackers were quickly baked on top. As an adult, I prefer it plain so I make it like a college friend showed me: equal parts butter and heavy whipping cream (less chance of being out of milk or it being off, great ingredient for college students with roommates), a splash of pasta water if required, and a squeeze of ketchup on the side of the bowl. If I’m serving friends or feeling fancy, I’ll fry up hot dogs or spam to make it more filling.
KD is like meatloaf or instant ramen: your nostalgia or personal tastes informs a very specific recipe in each household. I’m going to try adding herbs and extra cheese next time, thanks for the idea!
Try liquid smoke in the water you cook the mac in.
And KD is probably the single best way to finish off left over ham! NOTHING is like (properly made!) KD with nice chunks of ham in it.
@@vysharra I make it with double butter, 3 tbsp sour cream and a splash of water to thin the sour cream to 1/4 cup or whatever it calls for. Or cottage cheese instead of sour cream, for extra protein. Trust me it's good you just have to mix it well. I also add lots of black pepper, a handful of grated extra sharp cheddar, and a little garlic powder. It's nowhere near as good as Mac n cheese from scratch but it only takes 10 minutes lol
i throw the milk in until it makes a runny sauce, but then I keep it on the stove to reduce down the liquid. it really brings out the flavors and makes a more even coat.
The way to get the mac better is to add more butter than it asks for. It makes it cheesier and not as dry. Also, beware the milk - It can make it really wet, but you still need it as an ingredient. Milk is normally less than it asks for, normally just a splash or two to get the powder to liquify.
I love adding extra milk and butter to make it more soupy
Exactly. 1 stick of butter before adding the cheese, then the cheese, then just enough milk to make it come together
Instead of milk, try 10% coffee creamer, just makes it taste richer and not watery at all
@@paulkelloway8641 That's sort of where "more butter, less milk" comes in as the end result, either way, is more fats and less liquids which gives it the creamier cheesiness without being reduced to a sloppy wet mess.
I use sour cream instead of milk and butter.
As someone born and raised in Canada, once upon a time, I loved the “original”. (I’m so old it was the only kind available unless it was a store brand.) Then kraft released the white cheddar mac & cheese while I was in high school. I’ve never been able to eat the original since then. Then I grabbed a store brand white cheddar, not long after I finished high school. Nearly 30 years later, I only get the store brand white cheddar. Fresh ground black pepper does wonder to it though.
Honestly, once you go white cheddar you can't go back.
@@Silverity Lol truth.
I agree with the white cheddar bit for sure. Have you tried the Cabot brand white cheddar? Thats legit stuff right there lol
Walmart white cheddar is the best.

Okay, so I'm a middle aged mother who grew up on Kraft Mac and cheese. There's a trick to the perfect Mac imo. So, when you go to station the noodles, leave the burner on. Put the pan on the burner and add 2 1/2 tablespoon butter. Once it begins to melt, turn off/take the pan of the burner. Add the noodles to the butter, melting the rest of it as you stir. Then add the cheese, and stir it in the buttery noodles. It will be clumpy, but trust me. After that, at 1/4 cup of milk; just enough to coat the bottom of the pan. Stir that all together well. Add salt and pepper to taste. It's a creamy smooth cheap mac and cheese, and my kid lives for it. Love your channel as an American, I think you are all amazing and I love you so much. Sending love from the Arizona desert
Drunk, hungover or the munchies-original Mac-n-cheese WITH bacon bits. Freakin great! Also, Velveeta shells and cheese with chili is a step up.
I love kraft Mac and cheese. Still make it a lot, but never undoctored. Usually bacon and sharp cheddar. I'll also use it for easy chili mac.
KD is a lot like instant ramen. It's a meal you can make with minimal ingredients, cooking equipment, and skill. You don't really expect much from anything that comes with a powdered sauce packet. And like instant ramen, you have to doctor it with something to make it to barely edible.
And then you eat it and almost immediately you're like, why?
If I had to choose between mac and cheese and instant ramen, I'd take mac and cheese every time. I made instant beef ramen once; it tasted like someone had dumped a whole salt shaker in there. My dog wouldn't eat it.
@@jacklowe3429 it's funny. I'll eat instant ramen myself, but I wouldn't subject my dogs to it. I have higher standards for them lol.

I love hot sauce on the old Kraft Mac n cheese. Really helps the flavor!

@@popsrockz1372 The spicier the better. Extra Hot Valentina picante sauce is great on it too. If I have leftover taco meat, sometimes I'll make mac and cheese and add that.

I second that emotion. She looks VERY PRETTY. The kind of pretty that you take her to meet the parents. You are in like the Flynn.
As I’m in the states, our Kraft boxes don’t look like the one shown. If it’s dry, it wasn’t made properly. If the noodles are chewy, they weren’t boiled long enough unless you like it like that. One of the additions I make mixed veggies and tuna.
I am positive they had it reheated. It totally changes the texture and flavor. What they are describing is day-old mac and cheese.

I've eatin' Kraft Mac-n-cheese all my life and I've never seen 4 out of 5 of those flavors. Best way is either original or triple cheese (shells) mixed with cut up BBQ hot dogs or two boxes of original mixed with a can of original Dennison's chili (tastes like a cheeseburger and feeds a family of four) They are my ultimate comfort food!
These are the Canuck versions, slightly "healthier" than the more flavorful and more artificial 'Murican ones
My Mom always added so much to the Kraft Mac and Cheese, I didn't realize how bad it was until I had it made following the box directions. Mom made us think it tasted good. 😄
Sounds like your mom was very creative. Good for her.
That was Hamburger Helper for us!
It still tastes great lol. It's still a great go-to snack food for me even at 30 years old without fixing it up any, just the plain and basic mac and cheese. At the peak of my food devouring days as a high schooler I used to be able to eat two boxes in a sitting. These days I cap out at one box. But it's still damn good.
@dee, 😁
I never follow box directions for the amount of milk or butter to put in but I've been adding some paprika to my KD for the past year or so
plus, I've never found KD to not be cheesy
the whole point of it is to make it your own, it's a starter pasta and then you just add your own twists to it
When it is done, add a spoonful of ketchup or BBQ sauce. Delish!
I want to hear more stories about Damon's childhood in Texas. Also, how salty do the Irish like their food that y'all were saying "needs salt"? I mean, Kraft mac 'n' cheese is 25% sodium!!
The Canadian version might be less salty, I’m not sure. Also if someone makes it with unsalted butter, it changes the flavor a bit
I think these were all reheated - reheated mac and cheese has very little flavor.
Sarah Renz: My Dad immigrated to the US from Ireland in his twenties, having married my Mom and soon(ish?) after becoming a naturalized US citizen. And he used to have a space on his dinner plate isolated for a pile of salt. (I believe Mom said that it was because Irish food was so bland.) I believe, iirc (he eventually evolved/assimilated past this), that he used to stick his pinky in it at times and then suck on it to add to the flavor of what was in his mouth....
When I buy Kraft macaroni and cheese I put half and half which is cream in instead of regular milk. I put extra butter and I add one cup of shredded cheese to it along with black pepper then you can eat it
I can’t eat KD without pepper ! I also love extra butter and at least whole milk .
I like to add diced onions, hame and tuna, and extra cheddar, then spice it with salt and pepper, sometimes some salsa
There’s a line in the song If I Had A Million Dollars by Canadian band Barenaked Ladies, “We wouldn’t have to eat Kraft Dinner. Of course we would. We’d just eat more.” At early concerts, people would throw boxes of it onstage, and the band would eat it raw.
My wife always tried to make Kraft mac and cheese for our kids and my head would explode. I finally made my grandmas version of kraft mac and cheese.
Olive oil with large chunks of garlic saluted at low temp (no browning of the garlic) and once the garlic is soft you mix it with pasta (your choice) and add kraft parmesan cheese with black pepper and serve. The kids never went back, until they moved out and realized Kraft mac and cheese was easier.
As someone who has eaten an entire box, out of the pan, on several occasions, Kraft Mac and Cheese is def a depression “meal”
Yup.
I too have eaten it right out of the pot. And, I keep a box or two in my pantry for days when I know I ought to eat but also just do not want to get out of bed...
These are the Canadian flavors, I've not seen these in the US. I would at least try the Alfredo one. This stuff is good if you don't have much money, but if you have a few more dollars you can add things to them like chopped ham, hot dogs, tuna, and different veggies. Stretches that food dollar for sure. These use a dry packet of cheese seasoning - at least the US version does. If I'm doing a retro boxed and cheese - sometimes I crave it, I admit it - then I get the Deluxe version, which has a more liquid cheese sauce in a pouch. There used to be a recipe on that package to fancy it up with sour cream and more cheese, I think, but I've forgotten that and don't have any on hand to check. Loved the video and finding out about the varieties Canadians are NOT sharing with us.
Kraft Mac & Cheese is best when it's straight from the pot, hot and fresh. I used to mix in tuna and peas & carrots for easy bachelor chow.

I swear the different shapes taste different, because of the way different pastas hold sauce differently.n Spirals are my favorite. And you get less pasta with the novelty shapes, so it's a more convenient one-person meal.
For a while, they sold the cheese powder separately, as a popcorn shake-on flavor. I used to augment the single cheese packet on the pasta with it. Apparently I was the only one who wanted extra cheese powder, because the powder shakers weren't around for long.

KD is a Canadian university, food staple. Traditionaly eaten plain but some radicals, put ketchup on theirs. If you are an adventurous type, boil three hot dogs then make the KD in the hot dog water. Make sure to cut the hot dogs in 2.5cm pieces before introducing them back into the pot of KD. You can cut the dogs diagonally if you want to be fancy as fook. Pro tip for Kraft Mac: add some fresh shredded Cheddar and ground Black Pepper and some cut up Beef Hot Dogs/ Franks, makes it waaaay better-- or, a little Sriracha Hotsauce.
I'm not a big fan of Kraft dinners(or just Mac N cheese here in the US) but you have to serve it hot and a little soupy(preferably with black pepper added). Give me the deluxe versions any day over them.
If you mix in a little bit of cream cheese along with some butter, it gives the sauce more "body".
Seeing all these suggestions I'm starting to wonder if someone has written a KD receipt book by now.
Think of it as an ingredient. Every home adds to it. One of those things where you look around the kitchen and start being creative. I love cooking that way!
😍 True 👍
These boxes are all about enhancement. Its the basic, what you add to it makes it a meal. I like adding grated cheese( spicy jack or sharp cheddar} and bacon. Also, using seasoned salts{ Lawrys or a lemon pepper} also enhances it favorably.
Adding some real parmesan cheese as you add the sauce pack really makes it taste great.
Do you mean real Parmesan or do you mean the stuff you get in a plastic shaker bottle?
@@swahilimaster real parmesan
I recommend a follow-up episode with some of the American versions. Kraft Dinner is Canadian and a bit different. Also, we KNOW that it isn't healthy. We KNOW that it doesn't compare to homemade mac and cheese. It's a cheap convenience/comfort food. Sometimes you have a crappy day and just want to come home and eat carbs on the couch.
Exactly
I can't believe you guys missed the "Alfred-Not" joke. It was right there!
Kraft Dinner is a favorite among the elementary age kids, but the cheese tends to act like paste and glue 'em all up inside. So, if you add a bit of laxative to the KD Alphabet shapes you get a concoction that's perfect for the smaller set, known as Letter Rip!
LOL! 🤣
I appreciate that they're using the Canadian standard Kraft Dinner, instead of the American Kraft Mac and Cheese hahaha
That looks like Canadian KD, which means you need to try the original one again with ketchup! (That's the "traditional" way to eat it.)
In my experience only small kids were served it straight plain. We always added a can of peas, peas\carrots, peas\pearl onions, peas\mushrooms and some type of meat like hot dogs, sausage, chicken or tuna. That's what we did anyway.
That is the peasant kind with powdered cheese and you add butter and milk. The premium Kraft Mac and cheese comes with the pack of cheese spread in the foil packet. The best is with homemade cheese sauce; shredded cheese, roux, and milk.
Comparing mac and cheese in a box to real mac and cheese is like comparing the meat in a tv dinner to a real steak.
Agreed
Loving the Canadian content this week! 🇨🇦🍁
This was a staple for my kids growing up in the 80s. Can of condensed mushroom soup, 1 can of tuna and into the oven. Kids are now in their 40s and making if for themselves occasionally. Cheap meal.
I am watching this in the middle of the night. I save the TRY videos to watch as a reward for my day. Only now I have the munchies for mac'n'cheese... and it's late... and I must now go make mac'n'cheese. It is my purpose, my calling, my destiny.
Fact: Canadians consume more KD per Capita than their American counterparts.
25 Celsius is 77 Fahrenheit, that's not hot at all, quite pleasant. Did she mean 35?
Friendly reminder that Ireland and some European countries are not built for hotter temperatures, no air con in houses/apartments etc so what might be bearable over there is not bearable here! 😅
@@ColinFilm I get that, and the humidity as well. When it comes to weather in the 70s though I would never use an air conditioner, let alone think it was even close to hot. I mean that's the perfect mid day temperature.
The curly haired guy had it right on everything I think. It is good, it is cheap and a convenience food, it is a kids food and you need some vegetables. We would have it it as a side dish with kielbasa or chicken nuggets and broccoli or green beans on the side. They also make Easy Mac in the U.S. which is single serving cups of it and that is a huge favorite in college dorm rooms.
Pure American Memory: cook 1 box Kraft mac n cheese, add 1 can of chili & add 3 hot dogs sliced into rounds (medallions). Heat for 15mins on stove.
Perfectly filling & long lasting, perfectly devoid of nutrition! As an adult I still make this for comfort food, but I replace the hot dogs w/ turkey sausages add a healthy slug of Tabasco, ketchup & black pepper.
I absolutely love it… and it is depression on a plate. I never make this when I’m feeling good about life.
You should.
It's depression on a plate because it came out of the depression era in the US. People needed to feed their families for a low cost.
So it's kinda like M.R.E's but for civilians.
I ONLY make this when I'm feeling good about life. It's the only time I can handle putting such low quality food into my stomach because I'm just vibing with life too much to care about the poor nutrition lol.
I have never seen Alfredo M&C ever over here...where does Colin come up with some of these foods????
8:05 pro tip to nourish the tape worms you get from the mac & cheese: when you’re boiling the pasta, in the last couple minutes throw in broccoli, French cut green beans, edamame, etc veggie of your choice, then drain and add the cheese flavor like normal.
Lol! 🤣 Tape worms from macaroni and cheese??? 😂
Many a college student is alive today due to mac and cheese. The best part was when you didn't have milk and you were like, "what can we use instead". The weirdest, but tastiest, turned out to be mayo!
It's easy to make and eat, and if you want you can jazz it up with other stuff 😘
Can believe yall didn’t break out the shell Kraft cheese, that’s where it’s at.
Or Spiral Mac & Cheese!
if youre going to have shells, just make velveeta
Grahaeme and Clāp are hysterical together!!
The thing is a drop of mustard or two makes it actually taste a lot better. And if you drizzle a little tiny bit of ketchup on it or no it sounds disgusting but it is good. Just like putting butter on a Pop-Tart. Don't knock it till you tried it.
Mustard is good but I like to add Worcestershire
@@sharonclune8237 well now I'm going to have to try that! I like Worcestershire sauce....😋
Add a little at a time, it’s strong! Let me know what you think. 😂
When explaining Mac and Cheese to my non American friends, their sticking point is, “wait, there’s how much butter in it?!”
Kraft Dinner is from Canada and uses natural colours and has no preservatives compared to the American version which is Kraft Macoroni and Chesse and is full of preservatives.
Great video yall! Clisare wins for Donating her hair, and Damon wins for the Mark Morrison reference.
These are definitely Canadian. The classic add-ins to KD I've seen are cut up hotdogs, ketchup, and/or hot sauce. My mother is English so this stuff was practically banned in my household when I was a kid (possibly because i has vague amounts of flavour?). I quite liked it with ketchup, oddly. Can't touch the stuff these days, but I have a lot of friends that still include KD in their list of comfort foods.
Cool name dude, Thorin.
