00:00:15 - Jumping into After Effects
00:01:40 - Morphing Shape with Path Layers
00:12:25 - Morphing Complex Shapes Layers & Illustrator Vectors
In this After Effects motion graphics video we discuss shape morphing (morph / reshape) in After Effects CC. This shape morph can be used to change shape layers from circles to squares or triangles. This can also be used to help show you how to animate an icon in After Effects that utilizes shape morphing. Lastly, this tutorial will cover how to morph shape layers from Illustrator in After Effects.

Editor's Note:
The most requested topics on MOBOX Graphics is how to morph objects and morph shapes in after effects, how to morph shapes in after effects, and how to morph text in after effects. This is quite a large topic because you can morph PNG images in after effects or morph shapes in after effects. The technique for both of these things are very very different. In a lot of ways, how to morph an object in after effects (PNG image) is more of a how to reshape objects in after effects. This is because you need to use a tool that allows you to stretch objects in after effects. Reshaping objects in after effects is a very simple process to morph these png images / objects. Morphing shapes on the other hand can use the path tool in after effects to morph shape layers (circle to triangle or square to circle or square to triangle). Simple shape animation in after effects is a critical tool to have when working within AE. Adobe after effects shape animations is the pivotal way to add your creative touch to any project. Please keep this in mind.
Adobe After Effects 2018 (AE 2018) is a digital visual effects, motion graphics, and compositing application developed by Adobe Systems and used in the post-production process of film making and television production. Among other things, After Effects can be used for keying, tracking, compositing and animation. It also functions as a very basic non-linear editor, audio editor and media transcoder.
CINEMA 4D is a 3D modeling, animation, motion graphic and rendering application developed by MAXON Computer GmbH in Germany. It is capable of procedural and polygonal/subd modeling, animating, lighting, texturing, rendering, and common features found in 3D modelling applications.

I have been using After Effects for a while now, and I am mostly self-taught, but I had no idea what the shy tool actually did. Thank you for simplifying everything. Great Tutorial!
So that's how the lock and the shy options work! I found this tutorial for the actual subject of it, but I'm learning quite a few basics about AE that I definitely didn't know before as well! Thank you for actually explaining what all these things you're doing, well, _do._
Much quicker way to make a triangle. While dragging the mouse to create a polygon, pressing the up and down arrows adds and removes vertices.
+Justin Kreule Wow, that is so helpful! Thanks for the heads up! Ya learn something new every day.
+Mobox Motion Graphic Tutorials No problem, thanks for the video!
Or you can just use your scroll wheel on your mouse.
Some people use trackpads like myself so the arrow keys are perfect :)
Potato Maker heard of touchpad?
I had to make a icon animation type thing for a school assignment and my teacher is incompetent so he didn't teach anything. Thank you so much for this video! It really helped me
We all came to learn How to Morph. We left the video with extra useful tips and information. the way he explains little things in between was really great. A beginner and an expert can get knowledge at the same lesson. well done. Impressed....
Thank you ! The content of those 20 minutes was well worth it and simple! I can now do this in 2 minutes :D
I've been looking around for how to do this for ages. You're a champ - thanks!
finally. your video gave me confidence to open up After Effects and do a small project copying you. You are a life saver! and I've began my journey into AE because of you. thank you! until now I was stuck with 'Hype 3'.
6:04 OMFGGGGG I HAD NO IDEA YOU COULD DO THAT
this is an amazing tutorial! you were so clear about every little step and it was so easy to follow! Things that I've been trying to figure out I learnt in a sec thanks to you!
Thanks for this. Helped me a lot.
I've found that sometimes adding a circle path between shapes can make it smoother. For instance: between a triangle and a square it gives it more of a "blob" feel, instead of just adding an anchor point. If that makes sense.
same!!! good advice :D
I have a problem trying to make the shapes morph in the same place. It keeps going round the Anchor. Please how I’ll I solve this problem.
@@francissmith9813 just rearrange the position and the anchor point on every keyframe... oh I'm one year late
thank you so so so much! Your tutorial didn't just teach me how to animate path, but plenty other little knowledges that I couldn't get anywhere else! Quick and easy to understand, and I love how you explained why other ways don't work as well, or how you did not edit out a small mistake. Massive thanks!
Thanks! My goal is to make every tutorial, regardless of difficulty level, possible for everyone.
Thank you, this was really helpful, especially the details, that most CZcamsrs take for granted.
*** In recent changes to After Effects, some of the issues have been fixed, but others have popped up. ***
In the 202 release: If your shape is moving when it morphs, it's because your anchor point is shifting. It's recommended to move the anchor point into the center of your object: Press Y and drag the anchor to the center of your shape. Additionally, between morphs, the anchor point will no longer be centered as the center point of the shape has changed. You can set a keyframe on "anchor point" and move it to match the morph of the shape.
Thanks this was really helpful
Any better outcomes with morphing the easier way with vectors imported from Illustrator?
thank you,you help me a lot😭❤
This is an amazing tutorial! Been searching for this. *Thanks!*
Love the tutorial ,you make everything clear and understandable. Thanks :)
Awesome tutorial. Was looking for a way to morph various shapes to vector text and this is perfect. Thank you!
great tutorial bro... you got a pleasing voice over too.. people need to appreciate that
Great tutorial. I learned a couple steps that I wouldn't have guessed. It also caused me to look up how to convert AE text to paths, which is just right click on the text object while the text tool is still active and choose to convert to shape.
I feel like you may have missed a concept though, so might confuse some people. The path is independent of scale. So the path is a child of scale. When you copy the path, it's current scale doesn't come with it. It's copied at 100% scale, and that's sort of the same with position as well. It's position is relative to the anchor point.
So if you want path's scale to match, you should scale the path itself. You can do that in a similar way you would in photoshop actually. Click on "path" to select all the points, then hit Ctrl+T to free transform that selection. Scale/move those until they are in the correct position. Now when you copy and paste that keyframe, it stays in the correct position.
Also you're right clicking and choosing rename. Did you know Enter = Rename (keyboard enter, not numpad)
I also learned an interesting tidbit. This is straight up moving each point number to the corresponding one. The start point always goes to the next start point. You can change which point is the beginning/end to make the shape flow better. In your ship example, if you just add the correct number of points to your triangle to match your rocket ship, then make sure both have beginning/end at say the tip of the rocket ship and top of the triangle, you'll get a much better result, without all the editing. Now, you still get more control of the actual morph the way you did it, but less control of the triangle shape in your case.
This is some good advice, I was frustrated by how much extra tedious fine-tuning I had to do just to make sure all my shapes were aligned and sized proportionally. The text is a bit tricky, I can only get the shape to fill one letter. Is that the limit of the tool?
Hi! I know this is an old comment and AE has changed a lot since... But could you explain to me how can I change the start/beginning point of an already made shape?
Great straight forward tut - thank you!
Thank you so much, I was looking for this kind of tutorial for a while.
+sokocaloo Glad I could help!
really awesome tutorial, very helpful. subbed!
To center your anchor point on the object you can just use Ctrl+Alt+Home. Very useful.
Very clear tutorial. Thank you so much!
Thanks for the tutorial! Really helps me on video production 👍🏻
Smooth tutorial. Thank you!
you're saving my life with these tutorials... thanks!
I'm glad I could help Rebecca!
I just wanna learn even more now- it looks so cool o.O
This is amazing! Thank you so much!
Really good tutorial!
Thank you for posting!
Thank you so much for explaining as you go along. This was very helpful :)
Great tutorial. Thanks!
This is so much helpful. Thank you.
I was going crazy trying to figure out why my shapes were twisting. (circle to heart)... thanks to your tutorial I realized that it was because the heart was a vector shape from Illustrator, while my circle was a shape layer in AE. Once I realized from your tutorial that I just had to manually adjust the vertices it worked great. All other tutorials only show the first method (two AE created shape layers). Thanks for taking the extra step to explain an actual real world use scenario.
beautifull and easy, thank you very nice tut!
beautiful tutorial, fantastic, i finally learn how to morph :)
I'm an ae beginner and this was really helpful and easy to follow thank you!
U can also do this in adobe animate/flash by creating shape tween.
Solid Fix for Complex .PNG's created in Illustrator.
1. Create simple square/rectangle outline shape & align in center of the artboard.
2. Create your first graphic using the outline shape as a guide.
3. Create second graphic using the outline shape as a guide.
4. Remove guideline layer & Export as .PNG ***Make sure you select USE ARTBOARDS when saving***
5. BOOM, your .PNG's are now aligned properly and the same size.
Oi! This took me half a day to figure out! I still have to tackle the reshape points but so far it's working well!
Thank you! this is so helpful!
Good tutorial ! Thanks a lot !
Thanks. This was really useful.

incredible, thanks brother
this is awesome
Great tutorial, thank you very much.
super useful tutorial. learnt a lot.
I know this is an old tutorial. But if anybody is wondering about that Glitch in square to Triangle Morph.
- It is because the point count is changing, (reducing point count to be exact, If it was increasing, AE will automatically add an extra point).
- To make it smooth, add the same point count and make it consistent in all shapes( in this case 4 points). You can hide the points in a straight line.
don't understand sir
Thank you so much man
Thanks! :3
THANKS. That glitch with shapes was a real trouble. Great advise!
