    Still the most relevant GR series review on youtube. To state the obvious - with this you're getting a great turning radius (not zero turn - but pretty close) with the added ability to haul heavier things (spreaders, sprayers, rollers, etc) and a much more robust towing limit than that of a typical Zero turn (I think the commercial zero-turn JD's can town 400 lbs) For me - in a commercial lawn care/maintenance application/business, this gets it done as opposed to a 'commercial' zero turn.

    I bought one of these mowers in 2007, brand new and paid cash for it. I love that Diesel engine! Absolutely beautiful!
    BUT.... The Kubota just introduced the glide steer system on this mower. Everyone had issues with the cables that disengages the rear wheels. As of 2020, I have replaced 12 cables because they kept breaking. I understand this problem is now fixed. I have 427 hours on it now. Other than the cables issues, no problems whatsoever! I’m a true blue Kubota man. But I learned one thing on this particular purchase. You cannot count on Kubota helping you, even when Kubota admits to it being their mistake. They will be happy to sell me the new glide steer kit to fix mine for $320.00! Really nice since I paid over 8,000.00 for the mower and countless dollars and many many hours working on this system!!! They refused to talk with me early on and I don’t know why???
    So, this is a fabulous mower. I love it folks. Hopefully you will not have issues like I did. They do have the glide steer repaired now. I suppose it is corrected. By the way, I was in and out of the hospital with a major surgery for over 4 years when I bought it and had this problem. My wife hates Kubota. Because she had to try and cut our yard while I slept 20 hours average a day. No wonder she’s upset with them. So good luck with your purchase. I believe this dealer is very good. But don’t count on Kubota reaching out to help you. Other than that it’s a fantastic mower! God bless.

    Own a G1800 with 3'229 hours. Bought with 3'222. Injectors were rebuilt previously, blades were sharpened and maintenance was pretty well kept and it's absolutely awesome. Love the 3 cylinder diesel and the G series is definitely very well built.
    Definitely like seeing how they have evolved since then.
    Also note, mine was not a 4 wheel steering and I also got a service/workshop manual as well so I hope to get years and years of dependable orange goodness.

    First of all - love this machine especially for the sloped regions of our property that need to be mowed.
    I will vouch for the gas version of this machine, the GR2020. Even in the coldest -20C winter days , with the unit stored outside, the mower starts easily with minimal, if any, choke. The PTO 48" snowblower attachment with joy stick controls is really easy to use and clears our 400m driveway in 2 passes.

    I think that the Glide Steer feature is underrated. It performs magnificently and the GR2120 is an an absolute delight to drive. Almost went with a Deere but at the time, the comparable Deere model was gas powered an $1300 more than the GR2120. We made the right choice. I would have been happy with the Deere. The Gravely professional G series garden tractors as well built as any brand past or present. While not 4wd the engine is direct coupled to the transmission of which all the weight is over the rear axle. I guarantee it will take 4wd to be able to out pull it. Mine is 31 years old, 12hp kohler. The tractor alone is 898lbs, 50” mower 200lbs and unlike most all new mowers I never have to run wot to get a good cut. @@rockiemountin7535 Not at all, it is a valid question. Yes they did change to bearings but we never had a problem with the bushings (only found on the earliest models). Kubota offers a kit to change to bearings if needed. The GR2000 is the first gasoline model. GR2100 is the first diesel model made. The second two digits change for the newer models eg GR2010 and GR2110. etc. I think they are up to 2020 and 2120 by now. With frequent oil, fluid and filter changes our 2005 model year GR2100 diesel has never needed anything more than a Glide Steer cable. I changed the blades last year (first time) because they were too thin to sharpen any more. I replaced the Kubota battery in it (only 1 battery in 16 years) Nothing else, not a belt, hose, tire, has ever been changed. No carbeuretor or ignition problems with the diesel. The diesel sips fuel. It is amazing the amount of work we get out of it for what fuel we put in. It is easy to grease it shown by pictures in manual. Talk about a “turn key” operation, turn the key and mow:-) Kubota offers a snow blower for the GR series. It is All Wheel Drive after all!

    My GR2120 has been a source of headaches ever since I bought it, with every spring bringing more. I bought it because it's a tiny bit lower in the seat than the Deeres, and for a 4x4 or AWD garden tractor, they are the only game in town. I've had the Gr2120 for five years now, and it's got 450 hours on it, so it's not used heavily. It replaced a 35 year old Wheelhorse that had fewer problems in its first 20 years than this has in its first 5.
    The STUPID design of modern lawn and garden tractors with high seats, makes it very difficult to cut under a semi-dwarf orchard, and the Kubota is, as mentioned a little lower than the Deeres. Still, it's high enough to make it an adventure to cut in the orchard, and I frequently bang my head on limbs. The Wheelhorse was much lower, but didn't have power steering or the tight turning radius that the GR does, so that, plus the AWD is a plus for the GR. The Wheelhorse had a ground-riding deck, while the GR has a hanging one, so the GR can't compare in terms of cut quality. Hanging decks just don't cut as nicely as decks that sit on the ground. My RFM on the bigger tractor even cuts smoother, and the RFM, of course, runs on the ground. I had problems with the GR deck gearbox, which required taking it to the dealer for repairs. Continuing problems with the driveshafts coming off and being every difficult to put back on are another headache. The diesel engine is great, but I think if I had it to do over again, I would buy an el cheapo lawn tractor at a big box store, and just throw it out an buy another when it broke down. I could buy about four or five of them for what the GR cost.

    Should we choose the 48 or 54 inch mower deck? Any pros cons other than being able to get closer to objects with the bigger deck? If I’m using this on slopes which makes the ground uneven should I get the smaller deck? It would make it easier to store in the garage.

This option is not offered by North America dealers it seems. I’m curious if anyone (maybe Neil) knows why? It seems so much more useful than the bagging system that hangs off the side discharge. Maybe the accessory is manufactured in Europe?

  • @wildbill23c
    @wildbill23c Před 6 lety +4

    Not a very cheap lawn tractor by any means, but if you have a wildly landscaped hill you have to mow you are better off paying more and buying a lawn tractor with 4WD/AWD capability. The only thing is for the price they should have a rear lift hitch for small gardening attachments like a tiller, plow, etc. Why isn't those available? It would be a great selling point for many who don't need a big cumbersome utility tractor in their garden, but want the ease of being able to roto-till, plow, etc. in their garden. These smaller garden tractors are a perfect size for that, and with the AWD/4WD they've got the power and traction to handle those jobs.

    • @blessed7fold
      @blessed7fold Před 2 lety

      Because the tractor industry forces you into another class of equipment so they can make a lot more money. They did this same thing with front mount mowers. Instead of giving you the capability on the front of a compact tractor like Europe does the tractor OEMs force you to purchase a turf tractor instead. It's all a game to bleed your wallet.

Both of my John Deere 332 diesel garden tractors have over 3,000 hours on them I still do work with both of them the lower hour one of the pair runs no different than it would have new the higher hour one of the pair is just starting to show signs of wear. Both my 332's are classified as a kind of in between Heavy Duty Garden Tractor and the Super Garden Tractor categories. Its capability are very similar to the Kubota BX and the John Deere 1R series tractors. If I were to recommend someone the newer equivalent of a old school garden tractor it would be a SCUT as they are the closest thing available to what the older GT's could do.

That is handy for a homeowner who just wants to do a little tilling/disc cultivating/plowing for a small backyard garden, flower beds, etc. It would seem that Kubota would want to follow suit with this model especially when offering it with a diesel engine. Just saying.

    I have slopes so have been worried about going to zero turn. Also desire a Diesel engine as have that now on farm. Issue I have with garden tractor mowers is seems they don't have blade tip speed of zero turns, 18,500, making mowing slower. What is blade speed on these mowers? I have 60" deck now, Kubota offer that on a garden tractor with 18,500 blade speed?

    • @JCLawn51
      @JCLawn51 Před 7 lety +2

      Jim Sullivan Blade speed isn't a factor as much as lift the deck produces. Most decks are 17,000 to 19,000. The wheel width is the most important factor for hills. The bx is super tippy where my kubota zd 326 zerp turn is nearly impossible to flip on a side hill, but the 4wd will give you more control. If you got the money the f series kubota's would be the way to go for the best of both worlds.

      They replied to an older comment with this answer. A few years back some companies got sued because they were inflating their HP. In response several Japanese engine makers (Kubota and Kawasaki from what I know) preemptively gave their engines a more conservative HP rating to avoid any legal trouble (so no one could claim false advertising). So when this model came out, they rated it at 21hp, after the change it is at 17hp according to their web site. The engine hasn't change any, it's just a legal issue. It's the same thing with a Kawasaki, many of the mower style 2 cylinders are rated at 18.5 now, HOWEVER, they can run circles around a brigs and stratt that claims 21hp. Basically they are picking the low end of their numbers so they don't get in trouble, while someone like Briggs and Stratt is just full of themselves and hasn't bothered dialing their numbers back.

    I have been watching a lot of your videos and have done a ton of due diligence and hope you can clear up some confusion I have concerning this GR 2120. Kubota USA site shows it as a 17hp ( gas maybe), and the 21hp, as you stated, is the diesel. Correct? ( I have called dealers in my area and all are either unsure or have to ask someone else. This includes both sales and service department personnel. Secondly, the problems you have alluded to in prior units have supposedly been corrected and this series is new and improved and there are a couple of videos that say Not True. I am retired and cannot afford to throw good money after bad if this is not a good unit and will not serve my purpose which is primarily snow blowing up a steep incline. In one video you said a bx1880 would be troublesome blowing snow and one would need more HP, which I believe this 2120 has. Correct? So my question is simply, if I buy this machine will it serve my purpose and be a reliable entity and mostly trouble free in the future knowing I take proper care of maintenance on all my vehicles and assorted machines? Thank you for your anticipated reply and for making such informative and excellent videos.

    • @MessicksEquip
      @MessicksEquip  Před 3 lety

      The HP difference is only a change in reporting standards, nothing changed on the tractor itself. Like any product the GR is not perfect, but the frequency of trouble if a fraction of what it was on the prior models. Personally, I'd buy a BX and just drive slower in the snow if needed.

    • @andysear15
      @andysear15 Před 3 lety

      @@MessicksEquip I do not follow your "only a change in reporting standards, nothing changed on the tractor itself" comment. If an auto manufacturer reports hp of 300 it had better be 300, not 250 hp, same as them reporting mpg of 34, when the cars were actually getting 24 mpg, so there is a difference. I have had a KB sales manager raise his voice to me when I questioned his telling me the 2120 only had 17hp vs 21hp. It's a simple question I am asking...which Hp is correct? At 6:53 of this video you say it is a 21hp. Sales people in my area also report 21hp, some service dept. people say it is 17hp , others say 21hp, which leads me to ask myself ..do they even know what they are servicing/selling? No one in any dealership I have called can tell me what cc it is and we all know cc is torque which drives the machine and therefore the snowblower. A simple question for a simple answer, what is the hp and cc of a GR 2120 machine?

Diesel engines did not get wrapped up in that. Kubota's legal dept is wildly conservative. I believe whats happening here is that they are positioning themselves that if this lawsuit makes it to diesel engines they are already compliant. Thus why we're seeing this change on paper. @@kevinroberts8441 It's under 10k new, and also it is NOT for the "average homeowner" as is stated in the video. It's the closest thing to an old style "garden tractor" that fell out of favor 30 some years ago. It can be mounted with a snowblower, drive-shaft driven, not belt, and be used year round. Also the diesel means it has a ton of torque, which makes the the snowblower better than even 6k stand alone units (All wheel drive means it doesn't even need chains on the tires in winter, which most Sub Compacts are rear, and their age tires can't get traction). This mower is designed for people who want things a zero turn can't do. It's great for an orchard owner keeping paths clear to weave between trees, or go up a vineyard. I've cut paths through grass over 4ft tall, that no gas mower would ever be able to do without choking out after 2 seconds of trying. The snow blower also clears my driveway, the road and the neighbors drive way in no time flat. It's designed for people who have a more rural lifestyle, and it's rather popular in Canada. Also this is a Kubota, NOT a John deer, so it's very easy to find parts for it "after 10 years"....
      A Deere on the other hand, is the only company that offers a comparable diesel mower, but theirs is about 15k, and again, they will probably stop supporting it by the time you drive if off the lot.
      "The average homeowner" probably doesn't even a need a zero turn, they can just get away with a push mower. Or save gas and money and just get a non-mechanical push mower. Sticking money into grass is a pointless waste of money anyway, all it does it take and it returns nothing of value.
