    I still remember England v Portugal like it was yesterday in 2006. Losing to Ronaldo’s Portugal with 10 men after showing blood sweat and tears was a very difficult pill to swallow. Even though the team did not win anything just to think England had a team of Robinson, Neville Ferdinand Terry Cole, Beckham Gerrard Lampard Scholes, Rooney Owen. Absolutely insane 🤯🔥

    I admire a man that admits there are some regrets in life. It really grated on me when people say they don’t have a single regret. It just doesn’t make sense and you’re delusional if you don’t have regrets. This man has some knowledge and wisdom albeit not the greatest manager of all time but a decent one

      Lennon Connor I don’t know about a fraud mate, he has won some serious silverware in his managerial career. You don’t win 5 league titles in 3 different countries by being a fraud. He won most of it early on so maybe he didn’t keep up with the changes in football.

    The guy was hired because of Englands mentality of the 442. Even though Keegan spectacularly failed with that formation. The top clubs in England were still using it. Should never had sacked Hoddle. But the press and public didn't like his 352.

    I was 10 years old when this happened. I was convinced the cup was ours with the team we had. Heartbreaking doesn’t even cover it. Never been nearly as emotionally involved with the England team since.
    But one day we’ll win it.

    Euro 2004 was probably his best chance at winning a major tournament with England he just could not move away from the 4-4-2 formation when Rooney went off injured he should have changed the formation to a 4-3-3

      English teams were dominating the champions league at the time also... They had a team full of some of the best players in Europe, they should've done better than quarter finals... Even Southgate got England further with nothing in comparison.

      In that time only Liverpool won champions league and only had 2 English players on the pitch (Gerrard and carrager) they rest were all foreign.
      2006 arsenal got to final but only Cole and Campbell were English , the rest were all foreign
      You talk about English teams dominating as if it’s and all English team 😭

      When seven lost 2002 he went against arguably the greatest team ever (Brasil) and 2004/2006 he lost to Portugal on penalties which also had an incridible team in carvalho, deco, Maniche, Rui Costa, Nuno Gomes, figo and Ronaldo.
      Plus using your own argument against you when we lost to Portugal in 2004 , Porto had just won the champions league só going off your argument we should have had no chance cause a Portuguese team had just won the champions league 😘

      @@mr__OK 2006 was considered England's golden generation... 2002 they had players like Trevor Sinclair, Danny Murphy, Danny Mills, Heskey, Vassell, Dyer etc etc... No Lampard, no Rooney, no Terry etc... They almost didn't even qualify for the tournament...
      Porto won the CL due to mourinho's tactical genius not because they were the best team, granted Portugal were decent in '06 but the players you list Figo was 33 & well past his best, Ronaldo was 21 & a million miles from the player he turned into, Rui Costa was so old he was retired by then... Where as the England team was full of players all in their prime who were PL & CL winners by then... In '06 England were ranked number 1 in the world by fifa & went in as tournament favourites along with Brazil, the only other 2 teams that could match them both on paper were prob an aging France team, & Italy who were in the throws of a massive Serie A corruption scandal that had seen juventus relegated.

      2006- Rooney was not where near full fitness after coming back from broken metatarsal, Gary Neville was way past prime (31), Beckham was heading to la galaxy (31), Michael Owen got injured in first came, carrick was no where near the player he went on to become.
      Our team had its issues aswell.
      On paper France, Brazil, Italy and even Holland had teams to match us mate

      Mr Ok yeah, we get it. But that still doesn’t justify this guy’s decisions. Talent doesn’t guarantee wins, but his and staff’s decisions made it a tougher task for us. Regardless of how good other teams are, we were capable of competing and had a team just as good as the others.

      Should not have used 442, because its outdated, you need the right players mentally and physically in the positions. From a midfielder's point of view your job is not only covering the midfield, but to protect or support the defenders and strikers. That's hard work imo. Should used 433. Also our midfield was no good: no natural left footed player (like Stuart Peace), Lampard-Gerard partnership unworkable. Our midfield was weak.

    How to fit scholes Gerrard and lampard into that team. Perhaps it would have been best to play carrick or Hargreaves as holding in a diamond with Gerrard and lamps behind scholes . Hindsight and all that. . .

    People talk about England’s team at the time but let’s be honest, England had good players but not as good as the other giant nations at that time. England’s golden generation was around other golden generations. Lampard, Gerrard and Scholes were good but they weren’t as good as Zidane, Ronaldinho or Figo for example. They were good but none of them were the worlds best like other players from other massive nations, just my opinion
