This narrative about something improper or negligent happening in Philly is a fiction. There's no controversy here. Just really unfortunate timing for Detroit. But it's important to understand that the time when Detroit SCORED is not material here. Until regulation officially ends in Detroit, there's a non-zero chance that they could lose, and thus Philly has to continue to play to their one and only path to making the post-season by doing anything and everything they can to win in regulation. To do anything less actually *would* be a fiasco. Amazingly, the 78 seconds seconds it took between when Perron scores and when the horn sounds to end regulation in Detroit just happened to span the exact time when the final puck drop in Philly occurred. Once the game is live in Philly, nobody is going to distract Torts in the midst of active play to tell him about another game in another city. Rather, they're going to wait for the next whistle to whisper in his ear. And that's exactly what happened. But the puck was live for 62 seconds in Philly before that next whistle. And that next whistle was the whistle indicating Washington's empty-net goal. Kind of incredible.

Red Wings fan here, but no problem with John Tortorella's decision. End of the day, he is paid to coach the Flyers and to try to gve them and their fans the best chance to win games that he can. He called it his way and yes it was a gamble, but as we all know, sometimes such gambles pay off and sometimes they do not -- this one didn't. The fact that it didn't, of course, ultimately meant that the Caps bagged both points and the Red Wings came up short (despite an almost insanely dramatic finish to their game's third period and Patrick Kane's cool shootout clincher).
Bottom line: the Caps would have eliminated the Flyers by simply taking the game to OT, and John Tortorella's job was ultmately NOT to get my Red Wings or, just possibly, the Penguins, safely into the SC playoffs promised land after Game 82. Disappointed and sad, here, naturally, but no beef at all with JT's 'goalie pull' decision against the Caps -- sometimes things just end up (dramatically!) the way they are and at the end of the day, this 'high drama' finish was certainly a HUGE win for the NHL and hockey itself, something which should keep us all smiling widely as hockey fans, no😁?!

Either the Red Wings or Penguins would have deserved it. And then the Capitals get a free win. This must be one of the saddest things that ever happened in the NHL because they gave the fkng Capitals a free win. In the end the worst team with the worst goal difference has made it with all that luck. Actually the Red Wings were robbed. What a disaster really. So stupid espeically from the Flyers. They played well over the whole season. And then they start losing, in 2 weeks they lost everything. And they ruined all playoff hopes in just 2 weeks. and in the end they even ruined the playoff hopes for the Red Wings just to give it free to the worst team which was in the fight for the 8th spot. How is that even possible???? The Washington Capitals will lose all 4 games for sure. You will see. They have 0 chance. tha'ts so bitter about it. The Penguins are much better than the Capitals. They would have had a chance but due to bad defense they also would have failed probably.

Nah this is on Detroit. If they can't beat a team like Montreal without going to overtime then frankly they don't deserve to be in the playoffs. As far as Torts knew Detroit was losing and Philly needed a big goal. If Detroit improves their goaltending and ability to hold leads next year they'll make the playoffs easily and won't have to depend on out of town help.

3 minutes left in the game and one goal wins it. Weird discussion to pull the goalie.

They had to win in regulation for a chance. Makes sense

The Capitals will sink 0-4. Mark my words. They are the last team that should be in the playoffs. The Penguins would have deserved it not the Capitals. It shows the world we live in. Always the assho.s win always the wrong guys are lucky and get rich etc. The Capitals have 0 chance in the playoffs. Their goal difference is a joke. If you compare them with the Penguins it's amazing how the Penguins did not qualify.

@@justincosing5227 the Penguins goal difference is 1000x better than the - 1000 from the Capitals. The penguins played really well over the last weeks. They were in form. The worst team to get 8th spot are the Capitals. They will face the Rangers and they will 100 % lose 0-4 or 1-4. The Red Wings or Penguins should have got that spot. It's really amazing how the Flyers and Tortarella himself with his stupid decision ruined all playoff hopes of Detroit and the Penguins.

@@CosmosZeroX this just shows how salty and out of touch from reality you truly are. The Caps beat both those teams this year and are ahead of them in the standings. How does that lead to they deserved it? They didn’t! They didn’t earn it at all. Also, the Caps put themselves in the situation to make it with any type of win. So they knew entering the 3rd they could sit back because why wouldn’t they? They purposely didn’t press forward because they knew they could soak up the pressure and score when Philly pulled the GK. Philly and Tort didn’t know the Wings had scored as it just had happened and he was focusing on his game. You act like Washington wouldn’t have won if they pushed forward or if the game somehow went to OT or the SO. I’ve never seen so many people cry and bitch because a team earned their way into the playoff spot. GD which you and others keep bringing up means absolutely nothing. You just don’t like the Caps and wanted another team to make it. Unfortunately for you and others it didn’t happen. Grow up and move on! Maybe next year those teams will make it. Again, they have to EARN it…….

@@justincosing5227 I bet on the Penguins, Flyers and Red Wings. That's why I'm so frustrated. I know that the Penguins are better than the capitals but they somehow ruined it. Its my own stupidity that I made the those bets with high risk. I was an idiot to think that the Flyers could get far in the playoffs. They failed. In the end it doesnt matter because probably all of those teams wouldnt have survived the first round. I should have bet on Carolina or the Rangers but now its too late
