Old Crime Meets New Crime | The Gap |

- The Gap is a window into different lives and different generations. Two people, of vastly different ages, discuss a shared experience that impacted their lives, how it affected them and how they dealt with it to ultimately emerge stronger.
In this episode of The Gap, Noel, a former bank robber, sits down with Cornai, a former drug dealer, to talk about their lives as criminals. Through their conversation we learn about the way in which both men protected themselves from violence, the things that kept them sane behind bars, and the opportunities that gave them a second chance.

Sometimes its a drug addiction and their not bad people but rather they are so addicted they need more money for the drug and they are so desperate. My cousin is in prison for burglary he would have a gun when he broke into a house, but never would have the gun be loaded cause he never wanted to hurt anyone, he just wanted items to sell for money to get him drugs which he had been addicted for 20 years so im not trying to defend his actions. I'm curious if we didn't have a prison what would be your ideal punishment or how would it work?
@@jesusporras9370 Prison is not just a punishing measure. Prisons are supposed to rehabilitate people. Though, in reality, these institutions do break prisoners even more.
Prisons are seen more as a punishment to criminals than to be rehabilitating them. (I learned way more about this watching Orange is the New Black). It also stems from the prison reform and war on drugs in the 90's where it had become a staple of punishment even more into the more modern era. Kevin Hart when talking about his uncle getting out of prison, that when you get out from being in prison, your mind is in prison mode. What you think is that prison mindset so when we have people comig out with that mindset being punishment instead of rehabilitation. Its hard. It also doesnt help that the legal system had been made so unfair that former president Barack Obama had been known to find people and give pardons to them for reasons that shouldve been fixed. More effort needs to be placed in our criminal justice system and prison rehabilitation
THIS is moug me duro

When the old lad asked about the weapons of the younger lad, he looked genuinely worried, like a therapist or a father-figure
The bullying thing reminded me of my dad. He didn't carry a gun, but when he was a kid he spoke with a stutter. He was a highly intelligent kid, but when the other kids said something nasty or smart about him, he'd try to retort but he couldn't get the words out & they'd mock him worse. He learned to box, and he found that since he couldn't speak eloquently it was usually easier to just hit people, knock 'em out. When he went into the RAF he got on the boxing team at RAF Cosford, which used to be the RAF's athletics and sports centre. Luckily he learned a trade in the RAF, and he cured his stutter to the extent that he was able to represent himself in court for small claims cases, but he was always a fighter right up until he was old & decrepit, always ready to throw hands. I guess he was addicted to that violence - it was his go-to for most of his life.

@igeto12 weirdo
@igeto12 Once you've explained the cause of a problem, you still have that problem. OK, imperialism in recent decades is the cause of the current situation. Now what?
@Eric Miret I forgot to add. Importantly. The whole world was affected by Europe's colonial and industrial era that will have socio-economic impact (some good, most negative, of course) for decades or maybe even hundreds of years to come. The effects are ecological, cultural, sociological and therefore psychological, etc. Europe was and is great in some regards, but your life or education has clearly sheltered you from truly understanding the matter of how the West's growth aversely affected the majority of the globe. Syria included.
@Eric Miret What the fuck are you talking about? The grenades are coming in from old Yugoslavian military shit. Syrian immigrants have nothing to do with shootings and the grenades... it's a drug war that is raging in poor areas by people that have lived here their entire lives. In large parts it is happening because shitty neoliberal politics have driven what used to be poorer areas into real poverty stricken shitholes and the swedish police haven't been able to curb what used to be rowdy youth gangs that sold weed early on until they turned into real organised criminal enterprises.
Syrians? Fucking kidding me... this is 100% a problem that has been ramping up since the the mid 00's. I was on the sidelines looking in when this shit started, had old friends who got started in this ugly shit when OG's like the biker gangs and yugoslavs offered to supply them with cocaine and ecstacy.
@Eric Miret Syrian immigration has probably increased petty crimes, yes. The other stuff is what I said, a drug war between organised criminals. If you want to pin it on immigrants, it's second generation immigrants like myself, not syrians. You're spouting political nonsense from SD. The real problems are societal, both the immigrant community itself and the swedish state has failed these areas. The slide to poverty of the immigrant working class is real and has been devastating these past 15-20 years.
The sense of loss is palpable, but hearing the older gent discover education, and having it become his rush is truly inspiring.

“For a lot of people prison is just a revolving door” impactful words
But what the old guy said at the end and education changing his life is the really important part.
Can i get the context of the revolving door?
lord good a revolving door is the type of door that kind of goes around serving as both an entrance and an exit. One can just keep on pushing the door and it’ll keep on going around. Comparing prison to a revolving door shows how it’s so hard to actually leave the system you feel like you just keep on going around leaving and going back into prison
I'm not sure how it is in the UK but in the USA I've had friends go in for nothing and they end up going back and then back and back again. It's fucked up how a friend of mine went in for an minor in position and got involved in a gang while he did a few weeks. Beat the shit out of a kiddie diddler got put in for 2 years for that assault now because he can't pay court fines because no one wants to hire a felon so he's going back for being poor essentially. It's pretty fucked up. He got caught with 3 beers in a back pack now he's spent the past 12 years in and out of the system. It's fucked up.
@@misfitramone it's an absolute trap. The way out of the loop is so difficult, frustrating and filled with pitfalls it seems like it isn't worth it.

It's the hat
dank green beans anyone seen the “these are gangsters, these are wankers” meme? 😂
These shows are so cool ,you can look deeper into the person's logic for what he did or does and see what the experience has done to contribute to their character . I really hope the best for bolth .
Love watching these, the older dudes teach a lot and learn/listen to the younger dudes
I'll be darned. I wrote a research paper for one of my classes last year about the school system, education, and the prison system. Noel 'Razor' Smith, the gentleman on the left, was one of my sources since he was a living example of a criminal who turned his life around after reading some books and educating himself while serving his time. Funny how youtube recommended this to me. He's an interesting guy.
Google spy on you, no wonder this get recommended to you.
Its the matrix bro
This is so cool, the older man actually even speaks like a gangster
@@vudared5701 like the older man
@@vudared5701 Like the older man. He sounds like a normal britis man to you but sounds like a gangster to me. Let's not waste time here.
Its called cockney lol
I feel think anyone saying he sounds like a gangster is obviously American lmao
JJ Studios no American thinks a British accent sounds gangster. We have real gangs and cartels buddy
I was a Corrections Officer for 6.5 years and that kid is the kind of guy I would pull aside and try and get him to get his head on straight. You can tell he's a good kid that made dumb choices. Kudos to both for turning it around, gives my cold heart some warmth.
I love this interaction! I can’t wrap my head around this kind of lifestyle but it truly is fascinating.
The thing is, I can really really hear in both their voices that they both are very carefull with what they’re saying, a criminal that went to jail has done way more then he went to jail for, evryone that grewup w criminals etc, knows this, which makes it funnier and more interesting listening to this conversation, lovely
@@user-hi6vg4fz5j i’d almost guarantee both these guys have atleast 1 body
The old man needs to get into movies. He’s legit bad guy character.
Don't seem to glorify him, he's a scumbag.
@@woody1380 maybe so but everyone needs a second chance (not child rapists) but tbh he was pretty cool
@@woody1380 if you watched towards the end his messafe was "if we can stop one person from going down the road we went through, then thats a job well done." Everyone deserves a second chance.
Wow glorifying crime...
You act like crime hasn't been glorified in movies anyway. Everything's been glorified in movies, drug addiction used to be glorified in movies, hating gays used to be glorified. Even to this day, the military is glorified. It just depends on the culture and what's considered important in that culture.
Older guy looks like if Heisenberg and Mike became one person.
This is exactly what I thinking about!
'You're God damn right.'
You talking about Mike DeSanta? Yeah!
Aki Tenebricus no Mike Erhmantraut from Breaking Bad
Which one is Mike again?
I don’t know why, the way they talk each other makes me in tears. They already taste much more life then us
I was the rough kid in a Uni Halls in Bournemouth. Decided to straighten myself out and get educated.
One of the rich kids knowing I was from an Estate used to always say "I envy you, I've had it easy but you know real life"
I'd call him a prick for not knowing how lucky he was to be born well off.
If you're poor there are pitfalls everywhere, waiting to swallow you up. The temptation to go get the easy money so you can have the material things now and the party life now is too much for some people.
All it does in the end is put you in prison or set your adult life back a decade or two.
Schools plays a big part in it. Back when I was at school ADHD etc wasn't even heard of. I was a lunatic in class, never in class long enough to learn and spent more time stood outside an office than I did at a desk.
The only thing offered to kids like me was detention, isolation, suspension and ultimately expulsion.
Then you get a 12-16 year old kid left their own devices on a council estate, hanging around the "Bigguns"
You've all the free time in the world but as a poor kid you've no money to enjoy it.
It's not a huge step to take before you're selling something for someone. Then people try to rob you or just tick and don't pay. Now you're doing violence to others to avoid others doing violence to you.
Before long you're cold to the touch. The kid that cared about people but was just a loopy bastard when cooped up becomes an uncaring bastard that will hurt you before you hurt him every time.
It takes a long time to come back from that place and usually a harsh lesson or two before you do.
When you do come back (for me at least) it hits you around the head like a hammer, It dawns you "I was an absolute c*nt to the people around me"
Noel Smith's (the older geezer here) autobiography is one of the best books I have ever read, I found it hard to put down.
The old geezer is an absolute gangster. He the real og
Edit: lol ok
Real muthafukking G's
Yeah. And you have to think that 2.7 millions puond in the 70s were like 40 millions now
Carlton Chike Nwagu imagine trying to rob that now

This was amazing to watch! Hats off to both of them
A moment of silence for these two guy's lumbar sections in those horrible stools...
That's just their posture.
Science class has horrible stools. Makes sense tho.
Yeah the old man looks like he’s gonna fall over any minute 😂.

“Prison doesn’t teach you anything”
I mean he’s not wrong.
I mean it's a training ground for criminals, you learn how to be a better criminal and exchange ideas there, of course. So you do learn something, but it's not what we want to admit.

“When you lock men up like animals how do you expect them to behave?”
yes but a lot of those behaved like animals so they deserve to be locked up? Not saying everyone is but still
@Edgy Pope It sure is
If you act like an animal how do you expect to be treated?
bessford In contrast, how is a monster born? Is it their upbringing or the society In which they grow up in? Can you really blame someone who’s never had anything other than pain and suffering? According to the justice system, yes. You can, for the rest of their life. Further adding to that pain by taking the one thing every man and woman wants; Freedom.
Once that’s gone what do you have left?

That's extremely common in jail. People who commit crimes against children are almost always segregated or they'll be killed.
