      Oh! I've listened to this song for decades & enjoy it every time but I didn't know it was a journey through a whole day. I've often wondered if the lyrics were a metaphor for something. But I can dig it. Thanks, man.

    I grew up listening to this group & they are one of my favorites from the 60's-80's. Love their mix of rock with classical music. They have a sound like no other band. They have so many great songs such as "Go Now", "The Story In Your Eyes", "Question", "Ride My See-Saw", "I'm Just a Singer (In a Rock and Roll Band)", "Gemini Dream", "The Voice", "Your Wildest Dreams" etc. But all of their music is great. Many of their records are concept albums & meant to be listened to all at once. Sadly their drummer Graeme Edge passed away recently.

      And Ray Thomas, the flute player, passed in 2018 just before the band was inducted into the Rock Hall of Fame. The second song "Evening Time" was written and performed by John Lodge the bass player. At this time there were five members of which all five wrote and four sang.

    Salvo, so glad you heard the proper 'album' version, but you NEED to hear it in the context of the album's concept for it to really hit home! Forever Afternoon (Tuesday?) is the first part, and yes, it was released as a 'single'. The latter part is Evening (Time To Get Away). This would segue into the evening section on the album - another two fantastic songs: The Sun Set and Twilight Time (my personal favourite). Seriously - you must hear the entire Days Of Future Passed album - to this day, no matter what my mood - hearing it makes me feel good! The band's music, the orchestra, vocal harmonies & lyrics - it's a complete experience! Cheers!

    It sounds like you're going to love every part of this album ... as do we all. This is one of those early concept albums. Each song blends into the next. FWIW, the X-Men movie in 2014, "Days of Future Past" is of course a reference to this album.

    This album as a young teen opened my eyes to a tender emotion that I guess would be a higher romantic feeling toward music, something I felt as a boy was not allowed for boys to feel. But I could not help it, I was in love with the sounds and his voice and emotional tones. I joined symphonic band in high school because of this album, (and because I didn't want to march around with frozen feet in Alaska at football and outdoor hockey games ...).
    Every song on this album is amazing, and the classical bridge passages that echo the melodies between them is a sweet rest between the 60s psychedelic beats of the other songs.
    That mellotron was a magical sound when this was released. It was like a funky pipe organ, but punchier and better suited to the baselines and drums. I notice they are very careful about not stepping on the vocals with that buzzy keyboard sound, but using it to echo the vocal melody after the lines are sung, and that is very good musical writing. The whole thing is a masterpiece on par with a Beethoven or Strauss suite. There are even spoken word passages on this. It is like a musical education of several years in 41 and half minutes.

      @bryanCJC2105 Před rokem +5

      I'm glad you said this. The music from back then often had men singing of love and loss, things we would feel in real life. We learned the words to express our feelings even if we couldn't cry in front of anyone. At that age, our emotions were a maelstrom of love, hate, happiness, despair, and more all ramped up to 11. These kinds of songs often helped us navigate and channel our own turbulent emotions. These songs often offered a kind of emotional release by feeling as if the singer was going through it with us, offering themselves as our release.
      I was a child when this came out but growing up hearing words like these sung by men, taught me ways to express these feelings. Whenever I could muster up the courage to reveal them to someone, I knew what to say. In any case, they were an important part of our socialization. This is something that is mostly missing from today's music. I work w young people and sometimes play my own music. I'm stunned when I hear young men in their 20s say they wish they knew how to say things to someone. I keep telling, listen and learn. That's how I learned. Like I said, I'm glad you said this because it's not often acknowledged how important it was for us boys to hear men singing about emotions and love and loss. I just wish I had learned to play an instrument like you did!

      I grew up in the '80s and we were truly and honestly blessed. Very seldom did we squirm from "different' or "alternative" music to what we were expected to like and listen to. We lived for the weekends, silly to say, but i'm not sure that any teen generation lived to party like we did. On any night, I was the lucky one whose mother trusted her enough to literally give me the house every weekend ALL WEEKEND, I was able to play Billy Joel to Iron Maiden and as much as possible in between each one. Beach Boys to Split Enz.....we were able to journey through music without a lot of judgement from our piers.....Zepplin to Simon and Garfunkel. I honestly feel sorry for what the kids expect from themselves today, from what you see on Tik-Tok, it doesn't seem to be too much. I loved living through it and the best things were the concerts. One day Lionel Richie next, Black Sabbath....and the cost was absorbable for teens, like $17-25 tops. One of the best experiences ever was David Bowies "Let's Dance" Tour....David Bowie, Peter Gabriel and The Tubes. I live in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada and that outdoor concert literally still goes down as one of the best days of my life. Plus 25 Celsius, huge outdoor Stadium and a concert that went until 1 in the morning.....I do seriously long for those days once in a while, because being an adult can really suck sometimes. I dunno, it was truly just so different back then, none of us were angry. No one cared who was gay and if guys wore makeup, everyone loved everyone man....just the way it was. We grew up as a very accepting generation, and the myriad forms of music were there beside us to get us through every teen-age emotion that existed within us. Appreciate what you do man, some reactors just bob their heads to the music and never really appear to listen to the words...that really frustrates me. Maybe you should venture into some classical and opera. Pavarotti "Nessum Dorma" and Mozart reach into your soul and grab your guts....it's when you think that one man can write music for every Orchestral Instrument you realize the potential of the human soul. Thankyou for giving yourself the best of the world we live n. Music is inherent to our being. Just a quick little factoid, they found a Bone Flute in Germany a few years ago aged to 35,000 years old, it has the exact musical scale as it exists to this day...just goes to show you, the brain knows what it wants. Music is the math of the Universe.

    Moody Blues fused rock and classical, probably the first rock group to do this, the most prominent rock group to do this. The Beatles used orchestral instruments in some of their music but I would not say their music was a fusion of the genres

      The Moodies were the first rock/pop group to utilize an orchestra in this way. The Nice with Keith Emerson (pre-ELP) took it even further. As far as the first group to fuse rock and classical, that would be Procol Harum.

    As I was born in the 60s, and raised in the 70s, I grow up listening to The Moody Blues all my life. Next to Pink Floyd; this is more of my favorite bands. I got to see them once in the last 90s, and it was a Magical Experience, to say the least. I was also very lucky; as I got to sit in the very first row. Right side of the stage; just in front of John Lodge. I had even found one of his picks on the floor, when the looks came on. The lady next to me; who was her first time seeing the band as well, was almost as excited as I was when I found it. It had his name on it; so I knew who it belonged to.
    They didn't do the full version of Nights in White Satin; only because they started off with the orchestra playing the end sequence first. They even had drummer Graeme Edge come on stage first to speak the end poem of the song. Once the music ended; the rest of the band came out. One of the best nights of my life.

    We always talk about Floyd being THE “stoner” band. But before Floyd, there was The Moody Blues. This came out in 1967/68, right as psychedelic rock was flourishing on both sides of the Atlantic. I do know that if you were having a party where weed was going to be present. Moody Blues was definitely one of the bands that was going to be on the turntable. Often as the party was winding down…..a really chill vibe.

    Even if you ultimately only listen to it from beginning to end by yourself, for yourself, SO worth it!

  • @robertmoraga1501
    @robertmoraga1501 Před rokem +2

    The back story on the making of this album is really cool. In a nutshell, The Moody Blues were having trouble getting a good recording contract. They were finally hired by Decca for a very, specific gig; they were to adapt Dvorak's Symphony #9 to a popular format with a modern arrangement. However, they ditched the idea and finished the project they had already started; an original piece representing the different times of day. Decca was taken by surprise and not happy with being blindsided. However, the album had its proponents and was released as recorded. Nights in White Satin (The Night) ultimately became their biggest hit and Tuesday Afternoon (Forever Afternoon: Tuesday & Twilight Time) became a beloved track, even by non-fans. Tuesday Afternoon was written by Justin on a beautiful day when he went out to sit in a field in Surrey looking for inspiration from nature. He succeeded. The album is considered by many the first pure concept album with every song connected by a theme and in order. Love your reactions Salvo, technique and tone, among the best I have seen, kudos! And if you want to start album reviews, you could do worse than Days of Future Passed. Peace.

    Add my recommendation for Renaissance to your symphonic prog list. I love the Moodies too. Mike Pinder's mellotron helped create their trademark "wall of sound" brand, which sadly changed after he left the group. The Moodies remind me of John Williams. Renaissance reminds me or Rachmaninoff, Bach, Prokofiev, and Tchaikovsky. Things I Can't Understand might be a good starting point.

They have many other great songs, but this and Nights In White Satin--AKA" The Night," which you still need to hear in full (about 7 1/2 mins.)--were enough to make me a Moody Blues fan. Orchestral rock at its finest!

    I enjoyed your reaction. The Moody Blues nave been one of my favorite bands since 1967, when I first heard their album Days of Future Past. Their music was distinctly different from other bands. All their albums have a theme and takes you on a journey. If you like classical mixed with rock you should hear the live performance of their flagship song called Nights in White Satan. Find the performance that has an entire orchestra.

    what a great piece of music - it IS amazing - a song about lying in a field with a joint and your dog. :-) Mike Pinder on the Mellotron - which elevates so many of Haywards compositions to ethereal greatness - RIP Mike [2024-04-24]

    When the Beatles were filming "Help!", McCartney had a radio going and the song 'Go Now' was playing. He allegedly ran over to the other band members and said, 'Hey lads! Here's a group that's as good as us'.
    Fun fact: 'Go Now' was sung by Denny Lane who would later become a band member of McCartney's Wings.

    the classical in between bits are Peter Knight compositions - using the themes/melodies from the Moodies tunes as transitional tracks. the "orchestra" was a collection of studio players.

    I agree there are interludes of Disney and in the last part you hear a little Beatles as well. This song has 5 songs in it and they all flow together so well. Always one of my favorites but for us who grew up with them there are so many great songs to choose from over 4 decades of recordings and even now, nearly 60 years later, they still play dates.

    The Moody Blues somehow connected into the channel of Natures Principles which are actually Universal Principles. That is why its so relatable. For instance they talk about trees drawing them near, like they are tripping, and they may have been. "Something calls to me.. " If you listen to Watching and Waiting most assume it is about a person. Why I don't know. It clearly is that "SOMETHING" drawing them near speaking again. First "IT" talks about the mole burrowing its way OUT to the sun.. then... "Soon you will see ME 'Cause I'll be all around you. But where "I" come from I can't tell. ( eternal mystery ) But don't be alarmed by MY FIELDS and my FORESTS. ( sounds like God or as I say Nature as it IS also ) They're here for only you to share. " It starts out " Watching and waiting For a friend to play with Why have I been alone so long?" It is like the call of Eden for us to return from our concrete jungle and distractions back to IT to create and gather ALL that is FREELY given to us. Our sovereignty, free food, water and plant medicines. Creating a different sort of world not based on the substitutes and more sustainable to protect and preserve the other earthlings like we are meant to. Finding our true selves in the place and SPACE where all our powers and abilities lie waiting for us to find there. Talk about spiritual on a whole level most don't get. Being someone who used to trip alot you see deeper into the consciousness around you and you pick up on it. Explaining is difficult. Understanding has taken me decades.

I just about fell over when she told me to take all of it as a thank you.
