Written and Hosted by Ryan Arey ( / ryanarey )
Edited by Harriet Lengel-Enright and Randolf Nombrado
The film opens in the Gap Junction, where America Chavez and a Strange variant called Defender Strange are fighting off monsters and demons that were sent by Wanda.
Ten years ago, that sentence would have made no sense at all.
They’re after the book of Vishanti, which is like the ultimate good book of Marvel that has the most powerful white magic spells in the universe. In the comics, it was written by Agamotto, one of the first sorcerer supremes who also created the eye of Agamotto. In the MCU, this is the necklace that used to house the Time stone, but is still a powerful relic in its own right.
Now the monster is trying to take away her powers. This whole plotline was actually set up in WandaVision. In Agatha Harkness’s origin story, she is accused of, and later we see that she possess the Dark Hold. Gonna explain the dark hold in a bit, believe me.
So Agatha was unable to use this unnatural power fo the dark Hold to suck the life force and powers from her fellow witches. Agatha used this dark magic to try to absorb Wanda’s power, and now Wanda is using it on America.
America Chavez is also produced pretty faithfully from the comics. She’s actually from a dimension outside the multiverse called the Utopian parallel. Just like we see in the movie, her parents were two women, but they didn;t disappear accidentally. Long story short, they sacrificed themselves to save the Utopian parallel and move it into the regular multiverse. And in the comics instead of her moms being lost in the multiverse, it’s her sister Catalina.
And I just gotta say, superhero origins have gotten way weirder. When I was a kid, it was like, here’s a geek and he gets bit by a spider so now he’s like a spider. God I sound old In my day, if a man wanted ant powers, he made an ant suit and that was that.
Moving on. Her jacket is straight from the comics, but I believe they added this pride flag pin, a nod to her being a lesbian in the comics. And the phrase “amor es amor” is written on her jacket, Spanish for “love is love.” And the star-shaped portals she creates are also taken straight from the comics.
So Defender Strange is willing to sacrifice her, and says ““In the grand calculus of the multiverse, your sacrifice is worth more than your life.”
And this isn't just a throwaway easter egg. It’s showing that the MCU’s Strange is willing to make these same kinds of sacrifices. First he’s letting supervillains die, next he’s killing a teenage girl. These same hard calls are made by other Stephens in the movie-like Illuminati Stephen and Evil Stephen.
And we saw this in Strange Supreme in what if [talking about needing more power]. The first doctor strange movie showed usStrange learning to overcome his ego [it’s not about you]. But this movie shows us the root of that ego, that Strange doesn’t trust anyone else to succeed. He’s the smartest, the best, so it has to be him.
He carries around the guilt of letting his sister die-which happened in the comics, easter egg for you. Because of that guilt, he feels like the weight of the world is on his shoulders. He has to get more powerful so HE can be the one to save everyone. So Strange’s arc, in this movie, is to overcome this weakness, and learn to trust others. In the case of America Cghvez, he has to learn that important lesson that all teachers have to learn-he has to NOT take away the pencil, and trust her to win the day.
As Christine puts it, as a surgeon he always had to be the one to hold the knife. His trust issues drove them apart in every reality. And, as a side note, delegating saving the world gives him more time to focus on his own happiness. But more on that later.
When Strange gets ready for Christine’s wedding, he has to use magic to tie his tie, because his hands are still crippled and can't manage this task. This is also probably why he had a goatee trim guide in his basement in No way Home.

This is just speculation of course but I think we can attribute Strange's determination to save America Chavez to Spiderman being a good influence on him. We know the other versions of him were on board with sacrificing her for the greater good. But post No Way Home Dr. Strange was willing to risk everything to save one life and trust that she could find a solution to this problem herself. I'd like to think it's because he recently witnessed another young hero do the same thing.

This movie has been so polarizing so far and only been out for a day. I thoroughly believe that DS2 MOM will go down as one of the most ENTERTAINING MCU movies to date, the pace was fast and felt like a rollercoaster. I would personally LOVE to see a directors cut or the original version. Raimi said it was over 3 hours long and was also rewritten during covid. I also think MCU fanboys and leakers create too much Hype for MCU content and it leads to people getting their expectations too high and feeling let down after watching. I always temper my expectations and just go with the flow. Its all about entertainment value and I personally LOVED the film :)

This is so GOOD because it involves so many different elements like dark magic/ witchcraft, her family and heroism while being destined for evil. There is so much that plays active part in her characters story now and isn't just side material like with most other characters and the best thing about it? With Wanda they let go of the damn hero coding for the most part regarding her actions, meaning Wanda has a fuck ton more narrative freedom to DO interesting stuff which the audience won't expect. I love that. I love characters like Wanda because for once it's allowed to get interesting as hell for a character and their arc without the tight restrictions that come with a protagonist

Here's one that blew my mind (even if it wasn't on purpose):
During the boys' ice cream song, there is a 30's-era Mickey Mouse cartoon playing on the TV over their shoulder. Only...it wasn't Mickey and Minnie, but variations on their character designs. The character substitute for Minnie was a cat, and the substitute for Mickey was your mom.
Sorry I couldn't resist. Actually, he's a rabbit. This is reminiscent of Oswald, the Lucky Rabbit; Walt Disney's very first fleshed-out character creation. But he was rejected by the studio he worked for. Embittered, he re-worked the character and thus, Mickey Mouse was born. But Oswald still remained dear to Walt Disney, even if the character never endured.
This is significant, because Oswald signifies Mickey as he was meant to be...or rather Wanda as SHE was meant to be. And it stands in contrast in this scene with who she has compromised herself to become.

The first time Wanda dreamwalks to see her kids (the "I want more ice cream scene"), the cartoon playing on the TV is Oswald the Lucky Rabbit. Oswald was Walt Disney's original creation, but he lost the rights to Universal, and had to create the character of Mickey Mouse so that he could keep making cartoons. Disney re-aqcuired the rights in 2006, which is why they could use the short in this movie. It was a quick symbol to show that this was a universe that was familiar, but where slightly different decisions had been made.

I love how this movie showed that two of the strongest books in magic are just ordinary books. It's the contents that make them so powerful. Light and Dark magic are always present in the universe. All it needs to do is be channelled. And that's what those two books do. Nothing more. Nothing less.
I haven't seen Wanda vision. But they treated the Darkhold as if it was the Necronomicon from Evil Dead, a sentient book bound in human flesh, written blood, and powered by the souls of the deceased.
But it wasn't that. Just a book of written spells in a fancy case.
The books themselves are harmless. It's the contents that are dangerous. As long as the knowledge to use those particular spells exists in some form, the power will always be there.
And thanks to Stevens photographic memory, he's now a walking Darkhold.

I'm wondering why I haven't seen any mention of the magic used by Defender Strange in the beginning of this film? I feel like over the years the discussion of the color of a hero or villains power has been super prominent in these breakdowns. And in the very beginning of this film we literally see a type of magic/power that has never been shown in nearly 15 years of the MCU, yet every breakdown I've seen (not just yours) totally ignores it. It's white magic that is not only white, but creates fully three dimensional objects of magic and not just the flat, orange shield type magic we see from literally every other sorcerer in thr MCU so far. I don't pretend to know what it is, but I'd like to see a discussion about it, it's source, why and how it's different, etc. What do you think?

Spoiler for those who haven't seen the movie yet, but at the end, when Wanda tried commiting suicide, we see a sudden burst of Chaos Magic. What if, she's still alive, and was actually saved by Chton himself? Realizing how powerful Wanda has become after embracing her Scarler Witch entity, he now wants to wreak havoc on Earth or even the Multiverse by possessing Wanda. And there was this scene in Mount Wundagore where one of the evil-looking demons suddenly conjured Chaos Magic, but was killed by Wong. 1. When Charles was in the astral dimension trying to free the Earth-838 Wanda from the Earth-616 Wanda, there was a black and white TV playing the first episode of WandaVision.
    2. Charles had faith in the Earth-616 Strange even tho Mordo did not and Charles expressed it by saying, “Just because someone stumbles and loses their way, doesn’t mean they will be lost forever.” which was previously said in the Days of the Future Past.

In the fight between Strange and 838 Mordo, there's a callback to Strange training w/Mordo in the 1st Strange movie. Strange exits the trench where he's fighting 838 Mordo using fancy footwork, and Mordo could easily do the same IF Mordo had the Vaulting Boots of Valtorr like he did in the 1st movie, as seen when Strange trains with Mordo. In that scene in the 1st Strange movie, Mordo tells Stephen, "Trust your teacher" (meaning, the ancient one). Stephen's escape from the trench in this movie shows that he did trust Mordo as a teacher, at least, he learned a thing or two from Mordo, which gives him an advantage over 838 Mordo, like a "the student becomes the master" type of thing. Stephen goes on to learn a thing or two about himself by trusting 838 Christine and America.
