My favorite part was when the highschool weeb reveals that he's incredibly skilled with firearms, and the ONLY explanation given was that he spent one summer with his uncle in America; and then everyone just accepts his answer without question.

The first episodes alone is gold. The two bff girls caught me off guard. Instead of having a cliche heroic moment they go full phyco and slightly realistic too. That girl had probably the worst death in the show. Zombies are rising and the first moment she's in trouble she gets kicked to the curb by her best friend.

I wouldn’t call it realistic but a shocking black comedy twist.
You can say that it had a lot of fan service and that a few things the characters did were nonsense, but you can't deny that up to this day it's still one of the best zombie anime there are.
It had a certain vibe that made the zombies feel dangerous making you all excited and your adrenaline rushing to your head.
Despite the ridiculous amount of ecchi and plot flaws it holds a special place in my memories.
Is there even another zombie anime that does the 'zombie movie' idea and not find a way to make them cute pop idols?
That's like saying Gallagher is the best comedian who incorporates the best physical aspect of a stand up routine.
That doesn't make his content top notch, just the sole notch in a very limited scope.

I mean, it was one of the best zombie anime that existed... Because there's not a lot of those.
I first watched it as an adult and unlike some shows that ended with things unfinished/unresolved I was actually really bummed that we don't get more of the story.
Kind of happens when an author of a series has an untimely death.
The fan service aside, the moments of tension and drama are pure gold. Story-wise it is forgettable. But moments where emotions are highest were easily the best parts, and they capture it masterfully. The part where they try sneaking out the school and the dude hits a rail and see how far the echo is heard, you feel how badly he f'd up and how badly they ALL are f'd when they need to run. Or that moment when a mother carries her zombie daughter, in shock, complete denial and full of tears, you feel it!
That's my opinion though.
This anime single-handedly advanced jiggle physics in anime by 20 years, if you love Aqua or Darkness in Konosuba, thank this show. They really pushed for the advancement of the world.

You forgot about one thing, the world-building.
Small parts at the start of the episode that focuses on what is happening in the world outside of our protagonist's pov during the apocalypse. Like how the US President's private plane got overrun by the undead, thus killing the president or how the police blocking off the bridge reacted to survivors trying to cross it. Small moments like these that focuses away from the main plot for a brief moment just to show the state of the world gives me so much World War Z vibes.

Highschool of the Dead was my first introduction to Anime. 8 year old me was obsessed with zombies and when I found the entire dubbed series on CZcams back in the day, I was hooked. I love this series and it's a shame the creator died before they could ever continue it.
I remember watching this and LOVING it, fanservice, zombies and what my brain thought a "good story". This was around 2012-2013 when I started watching anime, this and high school dxd were 10/10 stuff.
Now, I've recently rewatched it and damn, I couldnt help but laugh. The almost non-existing plot, over exaggerated characters, the fan service that pops up every 5 seconds for the love of god, it was hilarious how bad everything was, but I still love it, I have very good memories of watching this back in the day and as trashy as it is nowadays, it will always be close to my heart.
PLUS both OP and every single ED are bangers, no one will ever change my mind
you know what's even more of a mindfuck? my college chemistry prof trying to be relatable by using the nuke scene from this anime to explain things. I have never been more blindsided by anyone at any point in my life.

I agree that the fanservice can be a bit much but I think that something Scamboli seems to forget is that even prior to The Walking Dead the zombie genre was FULL of rampant sexuality. TWD comic had plenty of sexuality as well (the show actually toned it down a bit). There has always been macabre eroticism with zombies eating the flesh of their victims and even Romero used that to juxtapose the humanity of actual sex.
Face it, horror and sex go together. It's almost a fundamental law of fiction at this point. Which is why HOTD did so well. Yes, titties. However, it scratched a primal itch that has been programmed into us by our media. What guy hasn't wanted to run around killing zombies alongside sexy women and getting to bone those same women afterwards? It's the hero fantasy on crack lol.
Exactly, this is a bit like junkfood but as a media. It's kinda bad but very enjoyable.
This show is absolute gold. I watched it when it was 2012. 💀 the whole outbreak part gmfu. Even the slapping women part when they start acting out 😂 I know some people haven’t watched it, do yourself a favor and go watch it. Sad the author passed away.

I watched this in college, having already seen Hentai and hella ecchi so that just annoyed me. What hooked me was the amazing animation (for its time), the edgy sword chick (gotta be honest) and more than anything, it really conveyed the sense of dread and horror in a zombie apocalypse. If you’re cultured enough for the ecchi, this show nails the horror aspect IMO

The funniest thing about this was that the manga was tamer than the anime, the anime went batshit with boob physics. When the manga really got going with its plot, Daisuke started feeling ill up to his death, leaving the HOTD franchise to be unfinished and basically left for dead at this point.

My favorite part of this show was when everyone was like "NO WE GOTTA BE QUIET DON'T INTERFERE WITH THE CHILD ABOUT TO GET EATEN BY ZOMBIES" and then Weeb racks the slide of his rifle and starts doing his best impersonation of an American, and they save the little girl. Victory through application of superior firepower.

I liked it (from the manga) because it basically went through every single mayor zombie movie. I read it right after I read Bio-meat (I knew of very few manga with that zombie survival trope at the time) and I really wanted more of that. It had clean art and appreciated the references. I was also into Sankarea at the time: I really wanted zombie stuff around that age

I don’t think there’s ever going to be a show/manga like this that drifts between cold hard seriousness and ecchi shit so effortlessly, I don’t know what it is but there’s a nostalgic feel to everything from the music to the scenes like the argument between Rei and Takashi on the rooftop or when everyone is chilling at the apartment. A lot of it is heavy on fan service I admit but there’s gotta be a reason people keep coming back to it even after so long (besides titties).

Idk if it's nostalgia or the novelty of a zombie anime or just "so bad it's entertaining" but I still enjoy this show. It was the second anime I had ever watched (first was Soul Eater, what a combination) and 15/16 year old zombie obsessed me ate this shit up (the jiggle physics didn't hurt either)

My mom watched this with me... We both just got a good laugh outta it.... BECAUSE HOW ARE YOU SUPPOSED TO TAKE THIS SERIOUSLY... She's also an avid anime hater... And after watching that... It just validated it even more....
This honestly was a fantastic show when it came out and completely set the bar for the genre in the anime world and nothing has ever come close since. It had realistic world building, the characters had their own motivations that were believable, and the art style was totally unique and awesome. Shame that the author passed.

Every time I visit the nearest Cex shop (for the uninitiated, Cex is a brand of second-hand shops in the UK), I see one DVD of High-School of the Dead. Just the one. Even after two years, it's still there. There was one time I was tempted to buy it but, after careful consideration, I decided not to. I feel like highschool of dead was something special for its drawing style and shape. Sure it doesn't have the best story and sure something was way too ridiculous but in the end, it made me smile a lot. It was different from it's own time in animation quality but I loved it since it gave me a new different perspective over new and old things.
My 53 year old father loves this show and is very sad he will never get pt 2.

When I watched the show back in 2010 as a young teenager I thought it was the dumbest shit and I only stuck with it because I was in that stage after discovering anime where I'd watch literally anything.
Then for shits and giggles I re-watched the show in 2020 and the over the top nature of the show appealed to me way more as an adult than it did when I was a teenager. What I previously found to be awkward and cringe-worthy instead became hilarious and based.

I remember practically everything about this show despite not having watched it in a very long time. I always cringed at the fanservice, because I liked two things when I was a kid; anime and zombies, and I just wanted more of that. That eternal wait for season 2 even though it was never EVER coming out was pain.

for a while when I was 11 all I would watch was ecchi cause that had been what I became use to so heavens lost property and highschool dxd was my go to
I miss the times when this was peak stuff to watch and I was all for it instead of being all adult and dead inside... Not that I was happy back then... I was always miserable but things just keep getting worse so I remember less awful times more fondly.
This show is like a kid from school where every teacher hates him, but every student loves because he’s edgy, funny and a good friend at the same time.
Takeshi being a « delinquent » type of character is actually very refreshing. Cause generally in animes with a predominantly female cast, they tend to make male characters just some wishy washy pervert that is only capable of doing nice things and is too insecure to believe in himself.
It’s a breath of fresh air to see a guy that has a personality for once even if it’s bad.
Plus he is also a genders equality advocate
