  • For thousands of years, more than 60 Native American tribes lived in Oregon's diverse environmental regions. At least 18 languages were spoken across hundreds of villages. This civilizational fabric became unraveled in just a few short decades upon contact with white settlers in the 19th century.
In this "Oregon Experience" documentary, Native Oregonians reflect on what has been lost since and what's next for their tribes.

I am a native part of the Nihankuotana tribe (federally recognized as the cow creek Bank of Umpqua tribe of Indians) and know all too well about the broken treaties of the United States. My ancestors lost our land, language, culture, and my great grandfather fought to get our tribe federally recognized in 1982. I'm proud of my native heritage and am proud to know my tribe is working on reviving the Takelma language once spoken by our ancestors!

I'm Irish. I feel for the Native Americans as it is a reminder of what happened to my people. A message to all Indegenous peoples. Do not ever forget your culture. 90% of Irish culture has been forgotten. The traditional hunting, fishing, sustainable living, home craft has been almost forgotten by most Irish people. Salmon, trout and the like were a big reliant in villages, 1 halibut could feed many families. We even had our own unique hooks, nets, baskets, fishing styles ect. Traditional Irish healing is basically dead aside from few elders who know it and pass on knowledge. But unfortunately the elders often lose their memories. Places like the West are the only ones who have some of it still around. And it's in dying numbers. So please don't forget your culture. It ruins a country and a people

It was so ingrained in my grandmother that my father didn't learn he was Irish decent until he was in his 40s after he'd already came to Canada. When I was a kid and she came to visit us in Canada and I still remember how shocked he was. Because my grandmother was made to feel so ashamed I feel like have no connection to my family history.

As a (60`s scoop) google for proper terms of how when the rezadental schools started to close as the queens picnicks like Oct.10 64, were a brother William Cooms charged her and her husband as he wittnessed the 12 children there hotdogs shall we say,as he was Ebstined before his testamonie in a cell supose to prtecting him, well done, To children like myself born in 67 in Thundrer Bay both my parents from there but different rezervations but the whtes getting $ as foter care yet when my owners friends of a woman fostering just as they brought my 2week self only 2lbs less wieght then birth in hospital till dropped off to them a rasist teacher & a husband who wanted children trying adoption as who can`t fall for a 5lb 2week old baby, his thoughts, when showing me off my mother was told to shut her mouth as the woman shood her friends away saying her mothers inside as after my mum was told never come back to were he friends and my father was at even though she denighed him marrage or even seeing me wich cased him to marry a french woman to make her hurt like she hurt him,she too married a moron who couldn`t even speak english,The constant lies over the past 38 years since she placed herself in my life regarding what was going on, telling me at day 1 I`m 17 and put down because I didn`t have her & her boyfriend an old white trucker who called me a whore because I painted her nails red and didn`t let 2 strangers mother or not I paid for a room in a hotel next to my apt, I got the grea news that my father raped her yet she only had gonneriah 2/3 times from him while pregnant with me,not carring all I lived threw SRA, and abuse and trying suicide at 10 and running since 12, being in childrens aid more and more abuse at 13 put in London Phic by the rasist teacher who as mum had me dancing since 2 and telling me that if I wasn`t adopted I`d be dead as when she was at teachers collage all native babies had no blankets and mothers didn`t know how to make formula so most babies starved, as well as other stupid rasist stories that after awhile I was sick of hearing how lucky I was being sexually, and emotionally,as well as the beattings and noone caring being the only one and being stratigicly kept away from any native things or people letting me adopted brother get the other children involved with the wagon burner, and many other names & pictres he`d draw & many many besattings while we`re bot being abuse so before 7 we had no clue things that were happening was not things that siblings or happen to children who are loved and cared for.So I fell in love and married the worse person ever as he was so smart and told me truth about our people and being ignored yet beat up and not liked as his father was Pierre Trudeau`s right hand minister of external affairs & justice. So bt marrying him and having the only grandchildren who I rasied up in cerimonies by my 110 ojibway techer Peter from Albera who they learned everything I didn`t get as well as being nursed for 3plus years and cloth diapers as well as both native names that when sweated for there indian names got pretty much the same names as I named then there meanings anyways, my daughter is still spoke of as at 9 did a 4 day fast no food or water as I couldn`t wrop my head around a child no water for 4 days & nights but as I was told she believes in creator more then you, I`m so glad even though I took it hard by many as I married outside m race it took many years before truth started comming out that my father didn`t rape and I met him as well as his grandchldren a whole mess there 2. Alot going on in Canada like the 215 graves found in Kamloops the same place the queen & the picknic with the 10 little indian song like god save the queen we were forced to sing they used our morning as the start of the NHL and of cousre the last thing said on the TV before the puck was thrown was Maple Leafs since 64. Ritual much.yet with the ellections comming and Justin Castro I mean trudeau as non of his chldren were his in my opinion as my 1st native even was a friends totem pole unvieling both my futer fatherinlaw & Pierre were there only Pierre was all up on me wich was gross yet the way he was being treated I just saw my first look at lies & politics, mind you I have possably grad 5 yet had my own room & key to my childrens public school on who my owner was as well as the family I was married into. It`s very sick but true they will never care about us, $21K as a 60`s scoop how much did the lawyers get? My motherinlaw worked on that lawsuit back in the early 80`s while buying things for and sleeping with her childrens friends she`s 81 and still practising law in Toronto, just insaine the life I`ve lived and seen yet I now undrestand that even when creator gives a dream to my daughter she still follows her fathers people who have all taken the vax wich is not a vax biut a gene therapy as one of the 4 love children I took in my home as I saw them headed for my life of abuse,The aunt 50plus years running a lab in the states fought off covid and brought in a cure to the White house was told no and we have the medcation but my children and others who listened to the same demon who genocided a million gay men as well as africans who in Bush sr, debate 34mins, in mentions Fuchi whose helpped in all this demonic crap. Like the Georgia guidstones as well as the sticks stuck up your nose who would do this? theres nano that I have a video a nurse unrolled it and it moves just like the so called morgelions thats a bio wepon. Godrules put out a video about the american indian having the same written script as BC isrial that the comadments written by Moses it was taken down so it`s on his godrules2. please watch & share as they try so hard to let anyone know the truth, So much love & very many blessings a 60`s scoop in Windsor Ontario.

It was taught in my Oregon school district growing up in the 80's although it was oriented more on Native history and culture and less on "you should feel guilty" which seems to be the current theme. FYI before someone calls me a bigot for that comment my Grandmother was Native American I grew up going to Pow Wows and learning about our history, I just think it is a lot more constructive to teach about the culture and rich history rather than promoting anger, guilt and bitterness over something none of us were involved in. I am also Irish and I realized long ago it was not very constructive to hate the English now for what their ancestors may or may not have done to mine.

@@deanfirnatine7814 I don’t think teaching the truth is telling anyone they should feel guilty. As you mentioned later in your post there is no reason to feel shame or guilt over things you didn’t do. I don’t think it is helpful to anyone to maintain the myth of American History as it is taught in public schools and maintained in our media culture. Some level of regret is appropriate, but that’s not the same as shame or guilt. Without some level of regret or acknowledgement there can’t be any meaningful improvement. Sure cultural appreciation has its place, but unfortunately Indian law and Government policy at its core is still based on the Doctrine of Discovery and the Marshal Court decisions from the early 1800s. It would be better for everyone if our laws were based on modern concepts of human rights rather than based on outdated 13th century racist religious doctrine. I only say this because attacks on Tribal sovereignty haven’t stopped, and no amount of cultural appreciation could ever make it stop.

When I was thirteen I went to court to divorce my adopted parents so I could claim back my Native Status. Thank Goodness my adopted parents where supportive. Now I can’t pass on our language and heritage to my children and they won’t be able to pass it on to theirs. not true. You're here yes, but you drive an automobile use a motor on your boat and live in an apartment or house. Sorry to say, there are few if ANY native indigenous that added any value to the progression of cities, railroads or trade. All things you utilize now, but dream of the days of your great great great forefathers. Hate to break the news, not only did you not have the understanding of the wheel, you didn't have horses either until the spaniards and french came through. history is repleat with sad stories and triumphs but civilization progresses by collective collaboration.

And yet their Spirit is Alive and Well ... and look at the turn around they have done in spite of everything being taken from them. Courageous, Heartfelt, and filled with integrity. I pray you keep separated from the USA Government and stay independent with your beautiful culture. May all be Blessed

Thank you for doing this video info wars and Thank you Mr. Means for trying to educate the American people and trying to help your/our people ( my grandmother was Cherokee Indian). I learned many things from her and and my daddy and I miss them greatly. They made me into a strong survivor with many of the old ways from their ancestors (Cherokee parents) building structures, living, eating, beliefs, and gathering of wild food ( foraging) and hunting, trapping & fishing.
That education is and has been priceless.

I wish I knew as much about California Indians as I have learned here about Oregon's Native populations. This reminds me of Hawaiian history, where the missionaries came in, married into the Ali'i class, were eventually Hawaiian citizens (Hawaii was recognized in 1848 as a sovereign nation by France, England, Japan)and these "citizens" first made the king sign the Bayonet Constitution and later overthrew the queen. There is no treaty of annexation. It was never signed. Hawaii remains a sovereign nation, but it does Hawaii very little good. The US occupies it and has used it terribly. Most people have no idea.

You want to learn how the natives from San Diego wont accept their own blood? Same tribe, same nation but discriminated against because they were born in Mexico.
And no, no one told me about this nor did i read about this or saw a video of it, i saw and witness with my own eyes how two native americans became face to face, they were both from the same Tribe, a tribe that endured so much, that was close to be extinct both by the United States Government as the Mexican Government, eventually the border was created and separated the tribe, and now the american side born natives not accepting and discriminating against whom at times were actually family members simply because they were born on the Mexican side if the border, disgusting if you ask me

One of the speakers mentioned the US Government wanted the Indians to learn English , take up Christianity , and not have more than one wife . The thing that got me , was the US didn't want the Indians owning slaves !? The US Government themselves had slaves , and they were African decent . The Indians have lost a lot from the US Government , land , hunting rights , the right to speak their own language . I myself would like to learn my Native tongue . To my brothers and sisters of Indigenous tribes , you speak the truth on how our Ancestors were really treated . I have learned that my West Virginia public education concerning American history was much more comprehensive than many other public school systems in other states. I learned of prehistoric peoples, Native Americans, and then European migrating peoples. I am appreciative that my orientation of North American history was a balanced experience. I am saddened that so many western states have been so deficient in the history of indigenous peoples before European invasions. It is my belief that this was an intentional disregard of early Native Americans in order to effect the subjugation of Native Americans to "white culture" (for want of a better term). Thankfully, not all public educational systems are so deficient of the histories of early North American indigenous peoples. There is so much more that we all can learn!

This is history; man has been driven to conquer and command other lands and people since Adam and Eve. Our country has progressivley evolved quite rapidly compared to any and all countries around the globe. Atrocities were inflicted by indigenous people as well; on other tribes and also on whites.
We have grown past this; may that continue. I so admire the tribal determination to preserve their culture for it is the essence of the strength of the group as well as each individual. We need to give our children a deeper understanding of this history. I
hope we find agreeable ways to raise to enable them to raise their standard of living on multiple aspects while being respectful of their culture.
