It’s amazing how you can buy most Porsche’s, drive for 5 years and expect not only retain its value, but probably appreciate!
Let’s hope so! I hope I can make it a better car too!
Love my 911 997,2 2011-model. Will never sell it!!
Love my 2011 997.2 C2S. A perfect blend of classic and modern IMHO. And it goes like crazy.
Exceptional detail. Brilliant video. TY!
Thanks Jay, excellent summary and some awesome scenery 🦘🦘🦘
Thanks 👍
I have leaned more about the range in this video than dozens of others. Truly excellent and informative.
Glad you liked it. Watch the other walkthroughs!
Fantastic video. Loved the detail and depth of knowledge you provided.
Thank you, sir!
Jay, you are putting out some good videos on the 911's. I also pursched a 2004 996 C4s two years ago with 100,000 miles and its running great with the original IMS.
Thanks mate!
Really well done. I learned a lot. Thank you Jay.
You’re very welcome! More coming on other 911s so stay tuned. Thanks for the feedback!
Crazy quality video. Well done 👍🏼
Benny Walker thank you!
What a great video, well explained.
Thank you!
I’ve had a bunch of 911’s and have a 997.2 Turbo S cabriolet which I’ve had a number of years. A blistering bottomless pit of power high performance sports car that can also take you across Europe. With its top down immersive driving experience (ex biker), a joyous engine sounding like Mahler...love the turbine whoosh over pops and bangs I’ve had before (save a Ferrari engine), it’s small size over newer 911’s and I’ve yet to find a more fulfilling car with such wide ranging capabilities. Each to there own but I also love the PDK. Sure, I miss a manual 5% of the time but who wants it in today’s traffic. A new (and very large!) 992 Turbo S cabriolet spec’d right is now pushing £200k and suddenly a 997.2 TS is looking a bargain.
Neil Gaydon I second your opinion... I also own a 997.2 Turbo S coupe (I still ride motorcycles) and I can’t agree with you more, best all rounder ever! From a very engaging/spirited canyon drive to a holding hands date with the Mrs. The size of the car is spot on. Do I miss a manual? Not really as I drive a little manual vw gti which keeps that box checked. I think our cars are keepers!
Great video Jay.
I just got my first 911- manual transmission 997.1 C2S. Of course I had to part with my 2017 Mark 7 VW GTI (only 18,000 miles). The 997 only has 14,000 miles but cost $71,000. The 997s are no longer a bargain but worth it.
Thanks Ron. Oooh, that sounds like a keeper to me!
Love my 997
Very good video, good work !
Thanks very much. That’s kind of you to post!
I love my 997 GT3 and 997 Turbo! The "last" of the analog generations. Oh, that Mezger too!!!!!
I did a video on the 997 Turbo vs 996 Turbo. You might like it! Check it out!
Awesome video!
Forrest Poulin thank you!
I do still enjoyed my 2008 997.1 Targa 4S having done nearly 81,000 kms.
Thanks for the 996 and now 997 run downs, much appreciated
My pleasure! Glad you enjoyed them. I’ve also done the other series too.
Great show Jay. I’ve heard that the early 997.2 direct injection engines had problems. I have a 997.1 turbo with the Metzger engine which is phenomenal.
Lucky man, Werner!
Love your vid, affirmed my recent purchase of a 2009 911 997 Carrera 4s gen 2 in Meteor grey metallic. A truly special model variant. Thanks for your channel.
Thanks so much! The one you bought is a very good pick. Best gearbox and engine with AWD. Best car since the 996 Turbo IMHO. I hope you enjoy it in good health!
JAY READ Thanks for your response, have recently joined Porsche club Great Britain (EastLondon) and have been asked by Porsche club to exhibit my 911 at the festival of Porsche Brands Hatch, this September, exciting stuff. Had a ceramic detail by RPM Technik, highly recommend. Regards Mark
Mark Reynolds bloody hell, that’s a bit cool! Enjoy that! Well jel here!
Liking the stat board, very thorough
Thanks a lot! I try!
Fabulous content.
Thank you!
Nice 997generation walk trough 👌
About 4 years ago i bought 996 turbo techart modified 560 ps ... I dont regret a day our symbiosis 🧘
So I fell in love and ...added 997.2 turbo S coupé 🤭
New
problems ... Wich choose when drive... 🤔 Both for mee amazing idealcar for all that so different... my student dreams in the past...🌜😴
I have a 2012 997.2 C4S Full leather interior, Sport Chrono, PDK, 18-way adjustable sport seat, Clear tail lights, Black on Black. Loving it.
That’s the spirit!
Thank you!
My pleasure!
Hi Jay. A great review. May I point out though a variant missing. This is the non-PASM ‘Sport Chassis’ with LSD. It was a zero cost option when new. I have one, but it has not been possible to determine the number produced, other than it’s very rare.
Jay that was a great video. I’m a proud owner of a 2008 911 Twin Turbo which is in my humble opinion is one of the greatest buys out there. My Turbo just went over 50k miles in September and it never disappoints. The power is incredible and most people I take for a ride cannot believe all of that power is coming from a 3.6L flat 6. There are few cars out there that I encounter that can stay with me.
That is so much, Greg. It makes me happy that you liked it. Oh and by the way, I want your car! TURBO!
Great Video ..Just one slight correction 2006 models also had the non-serviceable non issue IMS bearing although there were some very early 2006 models that have been found to have the earlier 2005 bearing due to
You need to go by engine number not date.
I’ve got the C2 GTS Coupe MT, Alcantara Delete. 🤤💥🎱
Standard GT3 for me, it’s 90% as fun as the RS for a lot less money. Put in the RS flywheel and you are 95% there. Drove both a 997.2 turbo S and a GT3 and GT3 hands down is the sharper more focused machine. Not really livable as an everyday car but as a weekend toy it is sublime. Ideally I would love to have a C2S or GTS as an everyday car as well
wow, I have been waiting for this video that gives a full run down of the 997line up. I too am a fan of the 996 and came very close to purchasing a 996, but I want to hold out for the 997. 997 Porsches prices right now are so incrementally close to each other I get FOMO (fear of missing out) or a feeling of settling for less than what I want. as I look to buy my first Porsche I want it to be the "right" one and have no regrets
Super glad it was helpful! Makes the effort worthwhile with comments like these! Thanks! Do you know, I feel the same way. However isn’t that the same with everything and then you relentlessly want more than you need when what you have is WAY more than enough. I always have half an eye on a 996 Turbo (which I believe is the next natural step up rather than a 997) but then I drive my car (996 C2) and I cant see the point in spending another $20k (probs 85% of the value of my current car) to get a car which is 35% more? Each to their own, I guess, but I’m schooling myself to get over FOMO!
@@JAYREAD absolutely spot on. the FOMO and incremental pricing is everywhere . From Cars to iPhones : X, Xr, 11,11pro, 11proS, then each phone has 64Gb or 128Gb version of each. blurring the the price gap.
the 996 turbo has been a real contender in the choices of 1st 911 for me too. and I believe that the only the 996: Turbo, Gt3, and GT2 variants will appreciate with the normal price curve of all 911s. I could be 100% wrong and the egg era will become a collectors holy grail as they become more rare.
but again FoMo , do i want my 1st introduction into Porsche to be an all wheel drive experience??? GT2 are out of the question in price. so I turn back to the 997, as I am looking for a US $60k purchase price.
You have a pretty nice dilemma there! I did some other films which might help you. Ones on the 996 and 997 and the biggest bang for your 911 buck video might help you too. Let me know what you decide!
Great video Jay - Many thanks. After almost 30 years of Porsche ownership, changing cars every few years, I bought a new 997.2 GTS in January 2011. It's now coming up for 10 years of age and I won't be changing it ever! It is the very best car I've ever owned - bar none - and, even though I've driven many of the newer 991 and 992's mainly as courtesy cars during services, I'm not even tempted to move away from my GTS. What is your opinion of this model? - Many thanks again...
Thank you, kind sir! Well, the Porsche community seems to have the greatest amount of love for the GTS. I wasn’t expecting this but the feedback I have received since doing the film has been that the GTS is a sweet spot in the range. They’re pretty rare too so I think you should absolutely keep it because I think it’ll hold its value well over time. Glad you enjoyed the film! More to come!
@@JAYREAD So glad that you agree Jay and thanks for mentioning the feedback - 'Sweet Spot' is indeed an appropriate description for the 997 GTS...
The DFI engines are undoubtedly more mechanically reliable, but I'm not keen on the potential for carbon build up in the inlet tract. Finding a car with a properly rebuilt M97 engine seems to me to be the ultimate long term ownership proposition. And, to me, the 997.1 is a better looking car than the 2nd gen. I think the design of the lights on the 2nd gen makes the car look a bit fat and droopy at the corners. 997.1 looks crisper and more modern.
Plus you can have the awesome 'lobster claw' wheels 😃
Have you seen much evidence of carbon build up p jay? My research so far seems to indicate highly efficient oil/air separation in the engine and some fuel injection on the inlet valves has meant that carbon build up is relatively light compared to the VAG rang of engines?
I've never seen a 997.2 which suffers from carbon build up. That's since 2009 (11 years) with cars with over 200K on the clock. 997.2 with DFI is a more reliable engine (with a lot less parts) than 997.1
Even better if it’s rebuild with a 4.0 bored out sleeve
@@hobear637maybe, although I reckon they're more than fast enough as standard to be honest. (Might be worth having even more power if you drive on track a lot?)
Wonderful video, but to clarify... the 2006's (other than those with an early engine production date) had the same upgraded IMS bearing as the 2007 and 2008 models.
Thanks!
Having owned a number of 911's including an Orange 997.1 GT3 RS 3.6 and a Blue 997.2 GT3 RS 3.8 I would say the 997.2 is my favourite of all the 911's although I have now driven a 992 as yet.
They’re too big. 997, last of the narrow bodies!
GREAT VIDEO!
Thank you, sir!
@@JAYREAD now I just need to wait and see if prices drop 😂
@@madfemurfast life’s too short!
My uncle has owned quite a few nice cars, Ferrari, Lamborghini and a couple of Porsche cars. The first Porsche he got was 1991 Carrera 4 in red, that was a fast car! The other one was a 996 turbo 911 in white. The car was drivable slow and fast and I thought it superior to the Ferrari and Lamborghini.
I now own a 996, dream come true 👍
Same here! 👊
@@JAYREAD 👍👌👍
The 997.2 GTS - 2WD wide body, slight tune gets you 430 HP - less $$ - WOW!
I own the car you speak of, curious what the slight tune is??
Hi Jay
My pal from london who now lives in LA needs our help to get a 997 gts cab tiptronic, my idea.. Do you know how many were made for the US Market and the best search site or app to find him one. It's his 50th on Wednesday and u want to send him a few to look at . I am loving my targa by the way and am happy to help you uk end with anything I can go.
Thanks Jay for the information so Is I understand good the best year it’s 2009 to avoid problem with the ims?
Yup! Different engine entirely from 2009.
Why the 997.2 Carrera GTS Cabriolet is the best 997:
1. The only manual, wide-body, RWD, convertible 997 ever offered!
2. Costs 150k less that speedster but same performance. PLUS, More convenient roof, 2+2 seating and manual transmission availability
3. Only 7hp less than the 997.1 GT3 RS: It’s a the sweet-spot between a GT3 & a Cabriolet
4. No turbo lag, more than a 2016 Carrera S, center-lock wheels, LSD availability
Manual GTS cabs are nearly impossible to find on earth and prices have double in the last 3 years - Porsche fans know what's up!
Nice! I can tell you’ve given this some thought!
Hi Jay, looking at buying a 996 2003. I know that's a lot of talked about IMS bearing. The car I'm looking at has the IMS done already and I'm actually more concern about bore scoring. Can you do another video explaining about the bore scoring issue. Thanks
I’ll add it to the list! Firstly, though, have a look at my 996 walkthrough, it might help you! czcams.com/video/odpufIf7Ank/video.html
Thanks
Wondering why you didn’t include the X51 powerkit option for the 997.2 in your spreadsheet.
That is an option not a model.
I keep trying to take a screen shot. Of course I take them all the time by accident. I can’t get my phone to take one of this screen.
I’m looking at a 2008 997.1 with the PDK. Can you send me a screenshot of what these cars are worth?
I’ve never owned a Porsche. I’ve owned several of the NSX.
These were very fine cars. Under powered but an excellent car. Now I’m looking at the Porsche. Just not sure what I want. Like your graft shows they have a large range in what extras came on the car.
I’m looking at a

997.1 - 4 coupe

Can you tell me anything about these cars??
Pro’s Con’s ??
I have the 997.1 Turbo AWD 480hp and I’m smitten with it 😎
I’m not AT ALL surprised! 😁
I believe the 2007-2008 997 Targa 4S have3.8L engines instead of 3.6L as shown on the chart 0:32
Yes, you are quite right. The spreadsheet has since been updated as others also pointed that out!
Good eye Chavis
I didn't hear you say that the 997.1TT or 997.2TT were still considered Metzger variants.
I’m sorry about that, Teri!
.2 TT is not a Mezgar engine
Computer-controlled 4-wheel drive in 997.2, the car brakes differently, engine pads also with a cable, hinge also with a computer, 997.2 not to mention the engine accessories, it is 991.1 mechanically. It drives definitely digitally compared to the 996 or 986. If I could still count 997.1 as an analog, it is 997.2 for sure not
Hey Jay, It was my understanding that the 991 generation was the first wide GTSRS. Am
I wrong?
Hi David! Goodness, it’s been a while since I did that video! I think I thought at the time I was right from my research but you could be equally right! I hope you enjoyed it anyway!
@@JAYREAD I did, thanks!
Hi Jay, I found a 2008 997.1 manual that is for sale and want to ask you if the $35,000US they're asking is a fair price? One owner, 43000 miles in good cond. with records.
I’d say that’s pretty good, wouldn’t you? Low mileage too! You couldn’t buy any other car as interesting for anywhere near that money. DO IT!
And let me know!
@@JAYREAD I think it is but I know nothing about Porsches. I just fear ending up with issues that would put me in the poor house..lol..eg: IMS.
I’m right with you, brother! That’s the issue with an older car. IMS not really an issue on these so that’s something. Get it inspected and then you’ll know.
997 turbo s are like 100k cad that’s a steal if u ask me
I agree! Strange outlier given everything else is so expensive!
Hi Jay, please send me the spreadsheet you spoke about in your video. Many thx Vivian
Hi there, Vivian. Could you take a look on my website? It’s available for download there. www.jayreadyoutube.com
@@JAYREAD thx will do and appreciate it coming back to me.
GTS is the best all around car.
Kept going back and forth between 4k and 1080p, thought my monitor was broken.
#firstworldproblems
2006 and up were already fixed
Not the 997.1 with bore scoring issues and ims failure 🤦♂️
That was an absolute rarity and massively overblown.
@Peter Best ......You got to be joking there’s a local Porsche specialist to me who’s doing bore score repairs and ims jobs on a weekly basis....
@@mikefranky no I’m serious it was massively over reported and made into a larger story than the statistics showed. I’ve known 997.1’s with 100k or 150k or many with lesser mileage with zero bore score or IMS issues. The truth is these are exaggerated rumours. A garage will always sell the scare story to get the business regardless of whether it’s needed or not. There are plenty that have run just fine and normal for 10/15 years with normal wear and tear.
@@peterbest5938 ...Maybe a few will escape expensive repairs but when you get the oil leak or piston slap sound like I had on mine that’s no scare tactic from any garage my friend..that’s reality.
@@mikefranky not from where I’m standing. Even the Porsche owners clubs admit its massively overblown. I do not t deny there are some cars that have failed but the % are small
The one you can afford….
The truth!
