- Want to know how to make dungarees? Our easy free dungaree pattern has been a huge hit over on our blog, so we thought we'd film a full DIY dungaree tutorial as well.
We all love dungarees (overalls) and who wouldn’t want an oversized super comfy pair? Especially if it involves a free and simple draft your own pattern and tutorial!
Whilst spending so much time at home during various lockdowns, Rachel was suddenly craving a pair of the casual oversized dungarees with the style and fit of the hugely popular range from Lucy & Yak. Rather than buy a pair she thought she would attempt to make her own sustainable pair from an old duvet cover. The result is an easy free dungaree pattern which even a beginner can follow!
If you want to find metric calculations, or you would prefer to have written instructions, you can find them here on our website:

This is just what I needed to get me back on the old sewing machine again. Thank you so much, can't wait to get started ❤
This pattern was amazingly helpful in making miniature dungarees for my dolls, since I didn’t have patterns for their body types! Thanks so much!
Perfect, so well explained. As a visual learner really appreciate you showing every st e
. ❤🙏☕☕
Amazing video thank you! I’ve just made this for my 7 year old, but added an inch to the top seams for both the front and back and shortened the length for the arm opening bit to 8.75 inches. Everything else I kept the same! Fantastic thanks ❤
Made these from fabric from old jeans - perfect for gardening. As a beginner sewer these instructions were amazing, very easy to follow, thank you so much. Looking forward to more free patterns :-)
What a fabulous tutorial! Lots of fun, too! I wish I had more time to sew! I'm busy making flannel baby blankets at the moment for a grandbaby that's due in November. And I need more long sleeves cozy tops for the coming cold months. After that, I think I'll try your dungas and wear them over one a long sleeved top! I'll be sure to tag you!
Great to see you back ladies. I hope you had a lovely summer. Great tutorial. These have been on my list for ages, so this video is hopefully the push to make them. They look sooooooo comfy😻❤️
Thank you SS. These were so much fun to make. Great video!
love this tutorial, Thanks so much. Cant wait to draft my own
I was looking for a really good tutorial for loose fitting dungarees and now I've found it 😊 thank you 👊🏾
Brilliantly clear video, thank you so much. I Made these when you first released the pattern instructions, and I loved them.... this video has motivated me to make another pair... so comfy but fun and funky... just like you! X
Recently seen these in the shops at astomomical prices, so as soon as I've had my cattaract operation and can see to sew again, I will be making some following your instructions. It will be my first ever pattern draft.
Absolutely loved this full tutorial easy to follow just made these love them hopefully find more tutorials like this
Brilliant clear pattern to follow. Definitely will try these dungas for next summer. Thank you Ladies x
Well done, ladies! I can't wait to stitch my own. 💙👏👍
Super duper dungas ladies! I’ll be having a go at these, thanks so much!
Great pattern - don’t know where it orginated, but your explanation is the best so far. When I’m teaching patch pockets, I instruct students to turn under the bottom, then sides, and the. The top last. That leaves a cleaner edge at the sewn top corners.
I’ve been looking for a simple dungaree-making-pattern and tutorial! Thank you! These will be perfect for me to sew at home in. Comfy and roomy but also very cool 👌
I mde the bib overalls according to your directions and they turned out great. Made the legs longer and not as tapered as yours but they fit great. I made them out of a heavy fabric that was an orange and off white tath looked like pillow ticking. Thank you!
I know two young ladies who would love a pair of dungarees! BRILLIANT!
Ill definitely be trying this out. Very simple and versatile too. Like your fabrics. ❤❤❤❤👏👏👏👏
Can’t wait to give these a try xx

Fab, can't wait to give them a go 👍
I was looking for a dungaree pattern for my little girl who has ASD and really struggles wearing anything fitted around the waist like leggings or trousers. This is perfect I can’t wait to get started!
Excellent instructions and really cute
Made a pair tonight for my sisters birthday! Fabulous tutorial, thank you ladies. Next is a couple for my grand daughter!
Wonderful!
I'd love to make some for my 3 year old grandson, did you make a much smaller size? I'm new to sewing and just wondering how to adapt it for him
I have tried so many dungaree patterns, cut out pdfs etc...this one is just perfect and so easy..thanks so much..going to make loads more! Daughters put orders in now.
This was absolutely a great video, tutorial and pattern. Thank you so much. Now to see if I can do it. 😂 I’m an old woman getting back into sewing after about 30 years. Just trying to find what my best area would be.
A great tutorial for making dungarees, the instructions are amazing!!! It is exactly what I have been searching for. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge and expertise. Kind Regards
Thank you! Can’t wait to try!
Hope you like it!
Defo making these. Thanks girls 👧 🤩
This is great, Thanks!!
I just made my first pair and I love them! Although I think I took my measurements a bit wrong, the torso is a bit too long for me :P I will definitely try again soon. Thank you so much for the instructions and video tutorial. You guys are the best!
I just finished making these and i love them so much. There are a few things i'll do differently with my next pair:
-the front and back is too wide at the top so it gapes, i'd make it an inch or two thinner on each side
-instead of finishing the ends of the straps and loops, just make them slightly longer and tuck them into the top hem when youre sowing it for a cleaner finish.
-the legs were slightly too short for the length i wanted with turnups, so i'll make them longer. Since i needed the whole length i did a regular hem on the bottom and turned them up showing the underside of the fabric, instead of sowing the fabric inside. So i straightened out the turnup flare.
-zig zag stitch was really hard to finish with as it kept chewing up my material. So i cut it with zigzag scissors and flattened out the seams open inside.
-the leg pockets are a bit low on me
-the seam allowance isnt always listed so i defaulted to 5/8th inch for the side seams and inner leg, but i should have done 1cm to make it the baggy fit thats intended.
Fantastic! Thank you thank you thank you!
Wow...I actually, followed your video and drafted this pattern and it fitted perfectly...you girls are amazing and if I knew how to add a pic of the ones I made I would...I am absolutely chuffed to bits with them. 👍 😘
We would love to see a picture Denise ! Email us at mail@thestitchsisters.co.uk 🤩
@@StitchSisters Just sent pics of the two pair I have now made..via email. 👍
Thanks for this really brilliant Tutorial. New to dressmaking. I have my pattern drawn out, ready to transfer to the fabric. 😄
Thank you for such a great tutorial
I am in the middle of making a pair of these dungarees out of an unwanted sheet ( and it’s the first time I’ve made my own pattern) I haven’t sewn anything other than simple bags before so wish me luck!😂
Thanks for this, fantastic
WOW👌🫶 I never get dungarees to fit me properly. Following your pattern, I managed to make myself a VERY nice pair in olive green linen. I wore them for WW2 day, at the school I work in and went as a Land Girl. The compliments were rolling in. They are so comfy, and now everyone wants some 😅 Thank you sooo much x
This is great!
Wow I ❤ dungarees. Struggle to find ones that fit as I'm tall. Long bodied too. Here goes after my shirring dress. That's how come I found you. You explain things so simply to a real newbie. Subscribed. ❤
This is exactly what I was looking for! And THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU for using inches instead of centimeters! I've tried drafting patterns in the past and it took twice as long as it should have just to convert it all into measurements that make sense to me. I had already purchased fabric specifically to make myself a pair of these and now I have the pattern to make them with...now I just need my sewing machine to behave itself so I can actually do some sewing lol
in Australia we use centimetres and it seems like the rest of the world uses inches! It is a real pain to have to convert from inches to cms 99% of the time. So in a way, I know how you feel
this was great.
Loved your video 😊
thankyou sistas plan n making these this eve for myself. will tag you as soon as im done
If I wanted to make these into ones that came to the top of my knee- would I need to adjust any measurements besides the length? Or would the leg holes be too big? I don’t have very big thighs and don’t know how to make the adjustments on my own, or even if any are needed. Thanks! These are so cute! I’m making some by the tutorial pattern now. Just got them cut out and resting a minute before I put them together. I’m going on vacation soon and would like to have some that are knee length to wear then.
This is the best video ever. I am so excited to try this. I am not the best at sewing, would u have any advice on what to do I have a very old machine that only stitches straight, what could I do as i can't overlock or zig zag.
Thanks I was looking for measurements
I made these and they turned out great, made 3 pairs now. Had to tweak the pattern a bit though. Beats paying £50 upwards for the well known brand ones.
These would look great on men/guys as well don't you think?
Excellent
Awesome
Thanks for sharing this.. However I wish you'd made it more clear for beginners like me that when you say "cut 2 in fabric" that you mean with the fabric folded!! I wasted quite a bit of fabric (and time) working that part out.
Thanks 😃
Hello, super new here and super new to sewing but this pattern is amazing .. growing a bump at the moment... Do you think I could make this in a jersey fabric to extend the time I could wear it for? Straps probably made from a more sturdy fabric so they don't stretch too much but other than that I feel like it could work? Even elasticated waists are not my friend anymore!
Brilliant thanks. Any advice on making them into a really wide leg version?
Hey. I love this pattern, the video makes it so simple to do. Thank you. I've made 2 sets so far with more to add to the collection
Can i ask if the pattern can be adapted to kids sizing? My little mini me wants matching dungarees.
Brilliant, thank you 😊, I'd love to make some for my 3 year old grandson, is there a way of adapting it for him please 🙏
This is such a nice tutorial, thank you! Would velvet work as a fabric?
OMG, It's been years since I've heard the word "dungaries"! 🤭
I absolutely love this tutorial ... thank you so much for making sewing easier!!!! I really want to make these now but I am not sure what fabric to buy? They are for Winter but I don't want anything too thick but not thin either. So typically I have no idea .... any suggestions??? Thank you for the inspiration ... flippin fab!!
You could use something like a baby cord, a cotton twill or a lightweight denim
You want something that isn’t too stiff
Thank you!!
You are very welcome. Do let us know how you get on 💖
Hi, thanks for this lovely video. I'm planning to make them for me and my daughter. How could this be made child sized? I could use her body measurements but I don't know how much to alter the other measurements you use. Thanks
I just asked a friend to send me these measurements without any explanation... hopefully she'll realise that I'm not completely insane when I hand over her Christmas present ;)
Hehe hope she likes it !
I just made these for my adult daughter and we both love them. I will be making a few adjustments, even with the measurements they are quite large even for the fit that they are supposed to be. I make a reversable bucket hat to go with them..I used the flip side of the hat to make back pockets on the dungarees (so cute). I want to add the contracting fabric to the inside 10" of the lower legs. I had this idea after the dungarees were finished. I tried to cut same size piece of fabric to the inside leg and fold the hem to the inside. it just is not working out. I have now unstitched it all and trying to find another way. She wants to wear them to an event tomorrow afternoon!!!
any helpful tips?
Am just wondering can you do Tilly and the buttons safiya dungarees in her book Make it Simple exactly the way you done this video am on my way to do them, and starting sewing.
Maybe I would make them in your version next time because the dungarees that you both wearing will be suitable for work. Can you use knit or woven fabric to make them as well
Can you advise the size of stitch for the top stitching on the straps? And did you use a stretch stitch? Update- I used a stretch stitch but I don’t think it looks as neat as it could. I still love them- sending a pic in by email as not on FB👍
Love the pattern for dangers. Don't feel confident in making them .which is a shame as I would love a pair . Thanks for sharing
Your video is fantastic, very clear and easy to follow, but I can't get them right, my pair ended up too wide across the bust and sits funny (everywhere else is fine) and my daughter couldn't get hers over her hips, triple checked the measurements/pattern layout and it all matches your video so no idea where I'm going wrong 😭
very good tuto ,I want To know if the same measurement for a dungarees dress ,thanks
❤❤❤❤
Please can you give me instructions for drafting a pattern for a four year old?
I've made my daughter these, thank you! Now my Grandaughter wants the same as Mummy.❤❤
I couldn’t see/didn’t realise you were cutting it with the fabric folded so I ended up with 2 identical fronts and backs instead of mirrored 😭 hoping I’ve got enough fabric left to do it right 😔
Saaaame lol
I'm really looking forward to making these, but I'd like to make them as shorts. Has anyone done this?
Hi Ladies,
I've just draw and cut this pattern from your wonderful tutorial and pinned it to my fabric to cut and start sewing.
Do I need to allow a seam allowance or was this included when drafting the pattern?
I can't wait to start cutting and sewing!
Thanks x
Seam allowance is included
What fabric do you suggest
What you pointed to was your iliac crest (top of pelvis) not the hip- you are actually measuring at the hip joint anatomically speaking.
Hi if I wanted them to be higher at the sides? 😊
How far do you take up the tape measure at the back when you measure the crotch depth?
😀
What kind of material is best to use for this pattern?
